SETIA Badminton Academy (SBA) organised its first international basketball competition from Aug 3 to 5 in conjunction with its 10th anniversary celebration.

The SP Setia International Invitation Basketball Tournament 2012 saw top basketball teams from schools in China, Macau, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia compete.

The competition, held at the SBA in Shah Alam, saw 144 players from 11 under-17 school teams take part.

SBA's chief executive officer and tournament organising committee chairman Datuk Liew Siong Sing said SBA was originally set up in 2002 to develop new generations of world-class badminton players.

However, it realised that there were talented Malaysian youth who excelled in other sporting arenas as well.

"The academy has been actively promoting sporting excellence by organising not only badminton, but basketball tournaments and other activities," Liew said.

The San Beda College from the Philippines was the champion while SMK Yok Bin of Malaysia was the first runner-up.

The second runner-up was the Macau Basketball Association while the Academy's basketball team was the third runner-up.
