The Counseling Department believes that students should take time early in their college life to adopt behaviors key to their success in college and beyond. Counseling courses are taught by counselors with the intention of assisting students adjust to college, choose a major or program of study, select a career path, transfer to a university, and cultivate learning strategies that will improve academic performance. These life-skills courses provide students with opportunities to increase their potentialin their future careers as well as for academic success. These courses are worth from 1.0 unit to 3 units and all are transferable to the CSU system, with one of the courses transferable to the CSU and UC systems.

COUNELING 20 Post Secondary Education: The Scope of Career Planning

For individuals seeking out new ways to manage their careers, identify their transferable skills, sort out their priorities and find balance in their lives, COUNSELING 20 is that first step. Critical thinking skills will be utilized through a systematic approach to career development by examining values, interests, skills, life roles, personality type, personal self-management, decision-making and goal-setting throughout the life span through the use of career assessments and various other introspective activities. This course introduces the student to the beginning phase of the career planning process.

COUNSELING 20A Post Secondary Education: The Scope of Career Planning

1UNIT (CSU) Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.

Recommended for people changing careers, undecided about career/major

In this first of three modules, students learn self-awareness, career and social factors, and career development theories. Students utilize critical thinking skills through a systematic approach to career development by examining values, interests, skills, life roles, personality type, personal self-management, decision-making and goal-setting throughout the life span through the use of career assessments and various other introspective activities.

COUNSELING 20B Post Secondary Education: The Scope of Career Planning

In this second of three modules, students learn career exploration, making career decisions, and understanding the job market. Students utilize critical thinking skills through a systematic approach to career development by examining values, interests, skills, life roles, personality type, personal self-management, decision-making and goal-setting throughout the life span through the use of career assessments and various other introspective activities.

COUNSELING 20C Post Secondary Education: The Scope of Career Planning

In this last of three modules, students learn job search techniques, job marketing strategies, employment interviewing skills, job survival skills and career expansion. Students utilize critical thinking skills through a systematic approach to career development by examining values, interests, skills, life roles, personality type, personal self-management, decision-making and goal-setting throughout the life span through the use of career assessments and various other introspective activities.

COUNSELING 40 College Success Seminar 3 UNITS (UC:CSU) Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.

Recommended forall students, especially those interested inincreasing their potential for college success.

This course will explore issues related to higher education that impact student success. Topics will include an overview of academic success skills, value and purpose of higher education. Los Angeles City College and Los Angeles Community College District policies and procedures, ethics and responsibility, diversity in higher education, educational strategies and planning, interpersonal communication, career development, health issues, and self-assessment techniques.

COUNSELING 40A College Success Seminar 1UNIT (UC:CSU) Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.

Recommended forall students, especially those interested inincreasing their potential for college success.

This course is the first of three modules exploring issues related to higher education that contribute to student success. Topics will include an overview of orientation to higher education; Los Angeles City College and Los Angeles Community College District policies and procedures; ethics in higher education; college resources; general education, certificates, graduation and transfer requirements.

This course is the second of three modules exploring issues related to higher education that impact student success. Topics will include an overview of personal values, goal and decision making, time/task management and academic success skills, which include study-groups, effective reading, memorizing, note-taking, and test-taking techniques.

Recommended for students interested in increasing their potential for college success.

This course is the last module exploring issues related to higher education that impact student success. Topics will include career exploration, educational planning, learning preferences and theory, diversity, health issues and interpersonal communication.

COUNSELING 41 Introduction to Higher Education 1UNIT (CSU) Advisory: English 28 or equivalent

Recommended for high school students or first-year college students interested in learning about higher education.

This course introduces the Master Plan for Higher Education in California, as well as higher education systems in other states. Included will be discussions of general educational policies, requirements for transfer and the Associate of Arts degree, differences among various higher education systems, specifically in California. Students will develop a plan in order to accomplish their future educational goals.
