Local yoga teacher coauthors new anthology The Sopris Sun – soprissun.com
Posted: at 2:37 am
Amy Harris, a local yoga teacher and energy and embodiment mentor in the Valley, has coauthored an anthology book which tells the stories of eight master students of Teo Alfero, a renowned spiritual teacher and shamanic practitioner who spearheaded the collaboration.
Transmission: An Anthology of Consciousness, Dreaming and Heart also features the stories of Jen Ziegner, Nicholette Routhier, Lauren Jane Heller, Stefanie Menack, Wendy Cirello, Erin Kinney and Janet Douglas. The book dives into each authors experience and touches upon Alferos specific technique for teaching practical consciousness known as recapitulation. Harris described it as a life assessment where events and relationships are viewed energetically to better understand them.
What were hearing from our readers is the different perspectives and versions of the journey helps people find themselves in the process. Im really proud of it, and us, she said.
Harris described the project as a journey filled with ups and downs, but rewarding, due to the nature of the stories presented. The communication between all of us was precisely what we needed, she stated. Personally, the hardest part is that theres a lot of vulnerable stuff in the stories. To show up and say look at how wild my life is is hard.
No stranger to spirituality or methods to deepen ones consciousness, Harris said she has been practicing for the majority of her life. She now holds a masters degree in spiritual science. She then began her career as a yoga teacher and started working with Alfero in 2020.
I did my first personal growth seminar when I was 8 years old, she said. My mom is really into spirituality, so its been something infused into my world for a long time Ive been immersed in spiritual endeavors in a practical way. Its always been a very practical set of questions Ive asked throughout my life: How does this actually matter on earth? How does this actually impact my life and the people I connect with?
The title of the book is a reference to the transmission of energy in all settings. It also represents the transmissions of each coauthors personal energy, depicted with nine symbols forming a circle on the books cover.
Each of those symbols is as close as we can get to a symbol of each persons transmission, Harris said. For example, Teo [Alfero] runs a wolf sanctuary and does wolf therapy and has done that for over 15 years. His transmission is very wolf-like.
For upcoming projects, Harris mentioned she is already in dialogue with her coauthors and Alfero about conducting a workshop based on the book. She hopes to do this in collaboration with a yoga studio based in Carbondale.

Yoga is a ‘great way to ground yourself,’ instructor says – Northern Virginia Daily
Posted: at 2:37 am
MOUNT JACKSON Centering herself with a deep breath, yoga instructor Jessie Caffery said her philosophy for the ancient practice is simple: Get out of your head and get into your body.
Caffery, who began her yoga journey in 2017 after attending her first class, quickly found herself enthralled by the practice. After completing 200 hours of teacher training, the minimum requirement, she is now sharing her knowledge and passion with beginners.
You can never stop learning, said Caffery, owner of Moon Child Yoga, who is in the process of completing her advanced teacher training, where shes learning more difficult postures and techniques as well as more mythology behind the practice.
Now Im standing on my head and flipping upside down, the yoga instructor said. Anyone who reads this article and knows me is not going to be surprised.
Her main focus as a yoga instructor is to get her students out of their heads and into their bodies.
We move through this crazy thing called life at warp speed, she said. Were all busy, including myself, so yoga is a great way to ground yourself, a great way to come back to who you are, where youre at and be able to relieve any unwanted stress or anxiety built up in the body.
Once a gym rat, Caffery participated in her first yoga class with her daughter on her birthday. From that moment on, she needed more.
I built my practice at home because I was on a very strict budget, Caffery explained. I couldnt really afford to pay for anything, but I knew I wanted to learn as much as possible. I went home and looked up as much as I could on YouTube.
A couple of years went by and Caffery found herself working in a hospital with older patients who could benefit from the movements of yoga. Using her knowledge, Caffery helped them perform similar yoga postures she had once learned, but modified the poses for their various ailments.
Long story short, I got the opportunity to come to a Q&A (in 2019) for a potential teacher training through the same gentleman that I had first practiced with," Caffery said. "He was guest teaching at this studio and while I hadnt gone to any other classes since the first one, I knew I wanted to practice with him again.
Her chance would come when she was asked to provide an email at the end of her class. A couple of months later, she received an email inquiring about her interest in teaching. Expected to start in March 2020, Cafferys class was pivoted to an online class during the pandemic.
Looking back, Caffery said her life changed all because of one instructor, who at the time, didnt even know Caffery was completing her certification.
The universe is putting me where Im supposed to be, said Caffery while explaining her first teacher reached out in December, asking her to teach at his studio.
Teaching at various locations during the week, Caffery is never in one spot long. Three times a week she teaches yoga in her upstairs studio at A New You Salon & Spa. Other days shes in Martinsburg, West Virginia, at Lovin Light Yoga.
Anyone who has a body can benefit from yoga, she said. But not every day is the same.
A little advice Caffery likes to share with those who dont know or havent practiced before is a willingness to be patient.
You might be more tired or you might not feel well. Sometimes just closing your eyes and focusing on your breath is enough intention.
Caffery changes her sequences weekly. Sometimes they revolve around the phases of the moon and sometimes they focus on a specific body part, such as the hips.
For a recent morning class, Caffery had students close their eyes and focus on their breath. A sense of calm moves through the room as students find their center.
Then I suggest that students set a goal of releasing tension from the hips and then we physically do it too with various poses such as standing postures, depending on the theme of the week, she said.
Following a moment of peace, students shift into the more intense portion of the hour-long class and then end with a cool down.
Caffery often takes her classes outdoors if students are willing. She also scouts out unusual locations like the Woodstock Tower or local Airbnbs for their views as days become longer and light is more abundant.
I would practice outside all the time if I could, she said. Teaching outdoors youre looking for certain environmental factors like a flat space, the challenge of grass and the amount of space.
Caffery teachesbeginner yoga and hot yoga, where the temperature in the room reaches over 95 degrees to help the body release toxins, and keeps her classes small with just three to five students.
Yoga, she said, is not intimidating. Yoga at the core is physical movement. Any level of physical movement, even in a chair, is a form of yoga. Youre doing it even if youre just sitting, being quiet and breathing.

GET ACTIVE: Downward puppy brings added fun to yoga practice – Dayton Daily News
Posted: at 2:37 am
There is some level of physical activity, but some people just go to love on the puppies, said Brandi Knox, Paw Patrol director. Its so much fun.
Paw Patrol hosts puppy and kitten yoga events to support the organizations mission, to rescue and re-home neglected, abused or otherwise unwanted pets into loving homes. The fully volunteer-run, foster-based cat and dog rescue adopts out approximately 250 animals a year all breeds and all ages. From puppy mills to overpopulation to rehoming, the need has never been greater for fosters and animal adoptions according to Knox.
It is truly unprecedented, the number of animals in need right now, she said. Its a mix of animals adopted during the COVID pandemic that people cant care for now to the economy and people struggling financially, there are so many animals. Its the worst anyone in animal rescuing has seen.
Events like puppy yoga raise awareness as well as offer an enjoyable afternoon of yoga and puppy love.
Benefits for two-legged yogis
The National Institutes of Health has partnered with the Mars Corporations WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition to research the physical and mental benefits of human-animal interactions.
Research has shown that interacting with animals can decrease levels of cortisol, a stress-related hormone, and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost overall mood.
Studies are ongoing regarding animal interactions with kids who have autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as previous research has shown a variety of benefits for children with those conditions.
Beyond the science, there are the smiles that are impossible to miss when a puppy scrambles through your legs or leaps onto your lap.
Benefits for four-legged yogis
Humans arent the only ones benefitting from the practice.
According to the American Kennel Club, socialization is an important benefit for the puppies. Interactions like puppy yoga can help the furry little yogis become more comfortable and confident around people. There can also be improvements in trainability and overall behavior.
Its great to get them socialized, having different people pick them up and handle them, Knox said. Its good for us to see how the puppy relates to different people so we can determine what a good home for them would be.

Puppy Yoga at Rooflow: A Fluffy Blend of Serenity and Joy – Egyptian Streets
Posted: at 2:37 am
In the bustling city of New Cairo, amidst the serene ambiance of Rooflow Studio, a unique and heartwarming yoga experience has taken root: Puppy Yoga.
Egyptian Streets had the opportunity to speak with Salma Ashraf, the yogi instructor and mastermind behind this delightful session, to uncover the story behind its creation and the profound impact it has on participants.
Ashrafs journey began with a personal desire to explore the concept of Puppy Yoga, but the logistics seemed daunting.
However, fate had a hand in the matter when a client approached Rooflow founder, sharing an amazing idea. It turned out that this client knew someone whose dog had just given birth to several adorable puppies. And thats how puppy yoga came to be, becoming a beloved trademark of Rooflow Studio.
The physical and mental benefits of yoga are well-known, promoting dopamine release and a sense of happiness. However, when combined with the emotional and mental connection that puppies bring, the experience becomes even more profound, Ashraf said.
The sessions uniqueness lies in the dynamic interaction between clients and puppies. Picture a client holding a plank pose while a puppy finds solace on their back, peacefully observing or even dozing off: playful and heartwarming moments infuse the practice with laughter and an undeniable sense of camaraderie.
Curiosity piqued, we asked Ashraf if any amusing incidents occurred during the sessions.
She shared a lighthearted anecdote about a mischievous puppy who couldnt resist a golden moment to relieve itself on an unsuspecting client. These incidents are rare and Ashraf ensures the safety and comfort of everyone involved by limiting the number of puppies participants can hold simultaneously to three.
Beyond the joy and relaxation it brings, Ashraf suggested that Puppy Yoga serves as a sanctuary for those with severe anxiety, offering a tranquil space to let go of worries. It appeals not only to dog lovers but also to individuals seeking the combined benefits of yoga and the presence of these furry companions.
Participants in Puppy Yoga sessions often display enhanced focus and stamina, as the delightful distractions of the puppies allow them to hold poses for longer durations, especially when engaging the core, Ashraf observed as she conducted more Puppy Yoga sessions.
Looking toward the future, Ashraf shared her vision of giving back to the community. Donation-based Puppy Yoga sessions at shelters are on the horizon, providing support and joy to shelter puppies while offering participants a meaningful way to contribute to their well-being.
A typical Puppy Yoga session is divided into two halves. The first half, a focused and energizing 35 minutes, emphasizes posture and a variety of poses. Then, the remaining 25 minutes transform the atmosphere as the puppies join in, spreading joy and happiness, Ashraf claimed.
Accompanied by uplifting music, the session creates a momentary pause from the pressures of daily life, allowing participants to forget about work, fasting, and any other concerns they have.
Furthermore, the beauty of these Puppy Yoga sessions extend beyond the yoga mat. It fosters a friendly and welcoming environment where individuals can connect with like-minded people, forming new friendships while immersing themselves in the practice and enjoying the playful company of the adorable puppies.
So, if youre seeking a unique and uplifting experience that combines the benefits of yoga with the irresistible charm of puppies, Puppy Yoga at Rooflow Studio is an absolute must-try.
Its a journey of cuteness, serenity, and a renewed sense of joy that will undoubtedly leave people with a wagging tail and a heart full of bliss.
