What do developers need to know about the challenges they might encounter when building healthier communities?
Levitt: Many developers assume that building a community that prioritizes health and wellness will have a major impact on construction costs. We met regularly with the International WELL Building Institute to best determine how Lakehouse could not only achieve the standard but go above and beyond. In addition, Lakehouses infrastructure was designed to provide residents with enhanced air purification, sound attenuation, comfort and control, while its health and wellness program provides healthy choices to residents so they may become more active, social, relaxed and nourished.
How difficult is it to operate such a community?
Levitt:We asked ourselves: Once we successfully construct the condominium community we have been dreaming of for years, what happens in terms of health and wellness? What we decided to do was engage with the local wellness community. Our team worked with local farmers, nutritionists, yoga instructors, fitness experts, cycling professionals, kayak instructors, art consultants, ski manufacturers and others to develop a building with the proper infrastructure to support future programming. Now that Lakehouse is open, the same group of local professionals has been engaged by the homeowner association to provide instruction, counseling and fun to residents who now live at Lakehouse.
We also give our residents the tools they need to live a well-balanced lifestyle. One way we do that is through our wellness concierge, Anna, who oversees many of the holistic health and wellness programs at Lakehouse. In addition to incorporating partnerships with local businessesyoga studios and fitness centers, for exampleAnna plays an important role in educating residents on how physical and mental wellness can be applied in all aspects of their lives.

Are we provided moments or spaces for respite? Are we engaging with the natural world in the built environment?
The industry has taken steps in the right direction, but we need to be more proactive by creating more spaces and places that make it easier for residents to make more conscious, healthy choices. Our hope is that the design and construction of Lakehouse and the amenities we offer will set an example that others can follow. Falls Aquatic Center & Cedar Falls Recreation and Fitness Center to reopen after positive COVID-19 cases – kwwl.com

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL) -- The Cedar Falls Recreation and Fitness Center and The Falls Aquatic Center announced plans to reopen after employees at both facilities tested positive for COVID-19.
The Recreation and Fitness Center will reopen on Monday, July 6, at 5:00 a.m., to members. Operating hours will be Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. until July 17. The City plans to resume regular summer hours after July 17.
Weather permitting, The Falls Aquatic Center will reopen on Saturday, July 4, at noon to season pass holders. The City of Cedar Falls announced the closure of both facilities on June 30 after an employee at each facility tested positive for COVID-19. The City says the facilities have been deep-cleaned in accordance with CDC guidelines.
A press release says city officials continue to comply with CDC and Iowa Department of Public Health guidelines. Due to privacy reasons, no additional information is being released regarding the two infected employees.
Both facilities will continue to follow COVID-19 precautions and all customers must abide by the rules in order to use the facilities. This includes wearing a mask at the Rec and at the Falls and following all social distancing rules. Those in the pool do not need to wear a mask at that time.
Anyone showing symptoms of COVID-19, including fever or cough, should not enter the facilities.

As many of you know, each student at NC State must take two semester-long fitness classes at the 100 or 200 level in order to graduate. While students with disabilities who are registered with the Disability Resource Office are eligible for accommodations, fitness classes cannot be substituted for a lecture course, which means that all students will have to engage in some sort of structured activity which meets the standards mandated by the University.
I do agree that developing a healthy lifestyle and building a relationship with exercise can increase mental and physical well-being. However, required fitness classes, especially those with rigid standards and performance-based evaluation, is antithetical to the idea of joyful movement and has the potential to be psychologically harmful.
A students grade is dependent on meeting the requirements set forth by the instructors in the class, this means that students may be forced to continue with the exercise even if they find it is creating a psychological burden. According to the Exercise Dependence Scale, there are several factors which indicate that individuals could potentially have an unhealthy relationship with exercise. One of these criteria is a reduction in time spent engaging in other activities, such as spending time with friends, and another is continuance, or feeling the need to push through activity despite injury, whether physical or psychological.
I am not necessarily suggesting that fitness classes cause exercise addiction, but I can see how it would be difficult for someone with a preexisting exercise dependency to take a fitness class. Being required to meet certain standards for a workout could potentially be harmful for those with preexisting conditions, such as eating disorders, exercise addiction or body dysmorphia, as well as those who already have an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise.
Even for students who choose to utilize the S/U grading scale for fitness class, there are still numerical standards they must reach in order to receive a passing grade for the class. For example, some classes require students to work out three or four times a week, and these workouts have to meet a certain time standard such as thirty minutes in order to count as complete.
While it makes sense that fitness instructors want to implement a standard to ensure that students are participating in the class, why does this standard have to be measured in numbers? For example, students could fill out a log after each workout, recording how they felt in their body while doing the workout, including the muscle groups that were engaged, which would promote a more comprehensive understanding of the physiological processes behind the workout. It could also provide an opportunity for students to reflect on how the workout impacted them mentally as well as physically.
In fact, I dont think that a fitness requirement is necessary at all, given that tuition-paying students have access to a massive fitness and recreation complex, which includes a plethora of activities to explore and engage in different forms of exercise, including club sports and fitness classes. Having the freedom and autonomy to do this without it being a requirement is far more conducive to building a healthy relationship with exercise.
Instead of treating movement like an obligation, or as a task to complete that only counts after reaching a certain time, distance or heart rate, why cant we approach exercise as an exciting way to discover what we are capable of physically and mentally, as well as a way to find what types of exercise we enjoy and which types we dont enjoy? Instead of teaching students that we have to exercise a certain amount to be healthy, cant we use these classes as an opportunity to develop a joyful and sustainable relationship with exercise?
As adults, we have a lifetime to foster a healthy relationship with exercise. Requiring two semesters of fitness classes that are evaluated on performance is not only completely irrelevant to getting a degree, but takes time away from other activities such as studying, spending time with friends and finding activities we are genuinely passionate about.
Of course, I am sure there are students who enjoy and benefit from the fitness classes, but why cant these classes be optional? After all, it is up to us to decide how to manage our own health. Being told that I have to exercise a certain amount based on standards created by someone who has zero understanding of my mental and physical health is insulting and ridiculous.

Since the widespread closure of gyms due to the pandemic, more and more of us have been turning to live-streamed, at-home workouts. Some of them have been led by athletes and fitness junkies at the height of their field, like tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams, CrossFit legend Rich Froning, and shredded movie star Mark Wahlberg.
Today, outdoorsman and survivalist Bear Grylls just took on a particularly challenging workout: the pre-joining fitness test for the Royal Marines, designed to challenge an individuals' strength, endurance, and mental fortitude. Led via video link by an active service member, Bear and his teenage son Jesse attempted to complete a remote version of the four-exercise circuit.

"There's a strong link between the fitness needed for a soldier and the fitness needed for an adventurer," says Bear. "For me, it's about functional fitness, and being fit for purpose."
They start off with a set of burpees comprising 20 reps. This exercise is included in the fitness test as it allows recruiters to assess a candidate's flexibility when performing the full movement, as well as their stamina.
Next up, after a 10-second rest, is a set of 20 situps, performed with very specific form requirements: Bear and Jesse have to keep their knees squeezed together, creating muscle adduction which will then beneficial in rope-climbing exercises.

They follow that with 20 pushups, ensuring that their arms are fully extended at the upper end of each rep, and finish off by testing the strength and stability of their core and posterior chain with a 60-second plank.
While Bear and Jesse only complete one circuit, the instructor, Ben, explains that usually candidates are required to do three of each set and officers are expected to be able to do four. "I don't know if I could do three rounds of that," says a breathless Jesse after completing the abbreviated test.
