Slutty Vegan’s Food Will Be Free for One Day Thanks to Ludacris, La La Anthony, Chris Paul, and Gabrielle Union-Wade – VegNews
Posted: July 4, 2020 at 4:54 pm
Today, all orders at popular Atlanta restaurant Slutty Vegan will be free of charge from open until close, 12pm to 7:30pm, thanks to a partnership with a group of celebrities. Actress La La Anthony (wife of NBA star Carmelo Anthony), musician Ludacris, actress Gabrielle Union-Wade, and NBA star Chris Paul bought out the restaurant for the day in an effort to support Slutty Vegans positive contributions to the local community.
Earlier this month, Slutty Vegan owner Pinky Cole announced a partnership with HBCU Clark Atlanta University (her alma mater) that will send the four children of Rayshard Brooksa Black man killed by police in a Wendys parking lot on June 12to college when they are ready. Cole is also providing the Brooks family with life insurance and a new car. The announcement sparked a negative online campaign against Slutty Vegan, which resulted in false reviews and one-star ratings on the restaurants Yelp and Google pages. Slutty Vegan fans responded by flooding those pages with accurate reviews, resulting in 18,000 positive Google reviews within a 72-hour period.
In 2018, Cole initially launched Slutty Vegan as a food truck and quickly attracted a large following, with customers waiting up to five hours in line to be sluttified by sampling Coles innovative Impossible Burger-based, Caribbean-inspired creations such as the Fussy Hussy, Dancehall Queen, and One Night Stand. In January 2019, Cole opened the first brick-and-mortar location of Slutty Vegan and shortly thereafter purchased two more properties in Jonesboro and Old Fourth Ward to open the second and third outposts of the vegan restaurant. To date, Slutty Vegan has attracted a number of celebrity customers, including producer and actress Lena Waithe, rapper Snoop Dogg, musician Usher, comedian Tyler Perry, and many more.
In addition to assisting the Brooks family, Cole has given back to her community in myriad ways through her nonprofit The Pinky Cole Foundation, including helping pay the tuition balances of 30 Clark Atlanta University students last year in an effort to help them stay in school; paying the rent for other small businesses in the Metro-Atlanta area during the COVID-19 pandemic; and providing meals to Atlantas essential workers working on the frontlines of the pandemic. Earlier this month, Cole partnered with musician Jermaine Dupri and Impossible Foods to kick off the year-long Votenik campaign, which helps keep people fed as they go out to vote.

LGBTQ+ Influential Vegans to Follow in Honor of Pride Month – The Beet
Posted: at 4:54 pm
Vegans and plant-based eaters inspire one another, by sharing their lifestyle on social channels. We want to celebrate vegans in the LGBTQ+ community who inspire us during pride month and every month. Pride was sparked back in June of 1969 when a raid by police on the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village challenged the rights of gay people to congregate and openly express their identities.
To show our support for Pride and the LGBTQ+ community every day, week, month and year, andcelebratethose who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, asexual, demisexual, pansexual, demi-gender, non-binary, we aretaking thisopportunity to highlight six influential vegansand their achievements in the plant-based space. In no particular order, here is who to follow for vegan pride inspiration.
Milo Runkle wants the world to stop abusing animals. He is the founder ofMercy For Animals, the world's largest farm animal protection andveganadvocacy organization. When asked the question: "Why is being Vegan important to you?" Milo responded, "Because I dont want to pay others to abuse animals on my behalf."
Milo has been vegan for 21 years now and advocates for an animal-cruelty free life through his organization, the MFA non-profitwhich was founded when he was 15 years ago after he witnessed animal abuse in his hometown of Ohio. In aninterview,he described theevent that impacted him: "The incident took place in 1999 when I was 15 years old. A teacher at a local high school, who was also a pig farmer, brought a bucket of day-old piglets from his farm for the students of his agricultural class to study and dissect. He had attempted to kill the piglets on his farm that morning, but one was still alive. In an effort to finish her off, a student who had worked on the teachers farm grabbed the piglet by her hind legs and hurled her headfirst into the ground." He adds, "his attempt failed; the piglet did not die, though her skull was broken and blood streamed out of her mouth. Horrified, a few students grabbed the dying piglet and took her to another teacher, who transported the piglet to a vet to be euthanized."
Milo's mission is to end factory farming andthe exploitation of animals for food. He wants to help others make plant-forward decisions and says, "We must be inclusive. We must lead by example as joyful vegans. We must focus on effective advocacy that informs, moves, and inspires." Milo is the author of the best-selling book Mercy For Animals.
Alan Cumming is an English actor, comedian, writer, and vegan for 12 years. "I was so bored of everything drenched in cheese, my skin cleared up, and my voice too, I have more energy, I feel younger, I don't ask my body to cope with unhealthy things." He goes on to explain that "one of the biggest causes of global warming is because of the meat industry. [It's so easy to be vegan] there are always vegan options on menus [at restaurants], it's not earth crunchy people, it's people who care about the environment and want to be healthy," said Cumming in an interview with PETA.
Cumming is recognized as "Not a Dairy Queen," the title of thePETA campaign he posed forfour years ago. Dairy Queenheardhis message anddecided to send Cumming a box of their new vegan ice creamto try and convince him otherwise.
ComedianEllen DeGeneresand her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, invested in plant-basedcompany Miyoko's Creamery, a popular brand for plant-based butter and cream cheese. Their investment will help with the development of new products. The power couple focused on reducing their intake of meat for many years and now maintain a plant-based diet. Although Ellen admitted she will eat eggs from time to time, any step towards a plant-based future is an achievement. Speaking about her diet, Ellen says,Its a great idea for the planet. Its a great idea for your health. Its a great idea for the animals health,
Talented singer and actress Miley Cyrus openly speaks about LGBTQ+ rights and identifies as pansexual. The star recently told Hailey Bieber on an episode of "Bright Minded," an Instagram show, that the reason she left her church was "that [her gay friends] werent being accepted." She adds, "they were being sent to conversion therapies. Miley is a powerful advocate in the vegan community for speaking up about the cruel treatment of animals. The animal-loving celeb wrote on Instagram, if you choose to eat meat you love pets, not animals."She recently adopted a dog from an animal shelter with her boyfriend Cody Simpson.
Kate Flowers is an influencer and vegan activist. She expresses her passion for the LGBTQ+ community on social media and sellsapparel with the message: "love is love" on her website.Kate mentions that she grew up with a gay father and was taught at a young age to accept and love everybody.
Kate makes YouTube videos with her ex-girlfriend, Mae Flowers, who is also a vegan influencer, about their favorite plant-based recipes and their vegan journeys. Sheis also the author of the E-Book, Freedom Food, which is a 21-Day vegan meal plan that will help you eat a mostly whole food diet.

7 Healthier Vegan Treats That Will Curb Any Sweet Craving – The Beet
Posted: at 4:54 pm
When you're vegan and looking for a sweet treat, it can be hard to come by storebought candy or desserts containing no animal ingredients. Gelatin, collagen, whey, milk solids, and more tend to sneak their way into candies and confections, even ones we consider to be healthy-ish.
Below, youll find seven better-for-you treats that will satisfy your sugar cravings without compromising your plant-based diet. Just know that these still pack on the calories so while you are enjoying a sweet treat, don't go crazy.
Smart Sweets pay homage to the candy of our youth without excessive added sugar. By using stevia, monk fruit extract, and a lot of plant fiber, Smart Sweets has managed to create believable, plant-based versions of Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish, Peach Rings, and, most recently, Starburst. Their texture is surprisingly similar (and dare I say, better?) than the original versions, and you can sleep soundly knowing you didnt ingest corn syrup today. With less than 130 calories per bag (most are in the 80 to 100 range), half your daily fiber intake, and only a few grams of actual sugar, Smart Sweets are a blessing for fruity and sour candy lovers alike. Just watch out for the gummy bearsthose have gelatin.
Simple Mills has released quite a few SKUs over the past couple of years, but in my opinion, none shine brighter than their baking mixesspecifically their brownies. Their brownie mix is the only gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free one on the market that actually tastes like something you want to eat. The recipe calls for three eggs, which you can replace with chia eggs, avocado, mashed banana, applesauce, or your favorite egg replacement to keep them vegan. The same goes for the oil or butterIve had success with coconut oil, but vegan butter should work, too. Also, the box says to use an 8x8 pan, but I insist that you use a muffin tin so every brownie gets those crispy, tasty edges. We all live for crispy edges, and frankly, we deserve them.
Its commonplace for plant-based eaters to be poked and prodded about proteinwhether or not theyre getting enough of it, and where exactly theyre getting it from. If youve been a plant-based eater for years, you might be used to it, but what if I told you there was a sweet protein-packed treat that would send naysayers running? (It wont actually do that, but it might stop the questions.)
To you, I present ALOHA protein bars, specifically the Chocolate Mint bar. Its the closest youll get to eating a Thin Mint without eating a Thin Mint. Each bar earns you 14 grams of plant-based protein and 12 grams of fiber, making it a marvelous on-the-go breakfast, mid-afternoon hold-me-over, pre or post-workout snack, or healthy take on dessert.
Too often companies are so focused on churning out gluten-free or vegan products that they skimp on taste. Thats why Healing Home Foods is one of my favorite health food brands of all time. This family-run company makes organic gluten-free, vegan treats like graham crackers, biscotti, granola, and nut butters that have divine flavor, texture, and a shortlist of stellar ingredients. Their Graham Bites are my go-to when I want a light afternoon snack, sans sugar rush. They come in Classic (think traditional graham cracker), Maple Cinnamon, and Lemon Chia, and theyre all fantastic. So are all the savory crackers, but were talking about sweets here.
Real talk: I dislike 99 percent of healthy chocolate bars. And Ive tried many, many bars. I cant get behind raw chocolate, coconut sugar-sweetened chocolate, any of itand thats because I dont eat chocolate for the benefits of cacao. I eat it because I want to indulge a little. Fortunately for me (and now you), Theo Chocolate has created a dark chocolate bar that is luxurious, but not tooth-achingly sweet. Its the only dark chocolate I genuinely enjoy. Vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, and organic are a few of the labels this bar touts, but my favorite label has to be its price tag. $4 a bar for premium, organic, vegan chocolate? Some might turn up their noses, but Ill take one, or ten.
Cards on the tableenergy balls typically arent very good. Theyre cute and convenient, but theyre usually dry, thanks to protein or superfood powders, or flavorless. These Raw Bliss Balls, though, are a rare exception to my rule. The combination of cashews, coconut, tart cherries, raspberries, and goji berries make these a fruity and delectable treat that doesnt just taste like dates (as energy balls do). They also contain no added sweetenerswhole fruits and nuts are the only ingredients. Grab a bag before your next flight (theyre TSA-friendly!) or stash them in your bag for a quick energy boost. And if youre not into berries, dont fretthey have cacao, lemon, and salty caramel flavors, too.
Cocomels are downright delicioustheres no denying that. A solution for the caramel lovers among us who dont eat dairy, Cocomels coconut milk caramels have the same pull, chew, and melt-in-your-mouth characteristics as their cream-based ancestor. They also happen to be gluten-free, vegan, and organic. Its a wonderful world, I know. Tied up like tiny pieces of taffy, you only need a few Cocomels to curb your sugar lust (and Im not saying that to be healthy, Im saying that because theyre so rich and luscious that you get the satisfaction you were craving). And hey, it doesnt hurt to save some for later. Trust me, youll want them later.

Veganism benefits: Should I go vegan? Will I lose weight from being vegan? – Express
Posted: at 4:54 pm
Veganism is a way of living rather than a diet. Vegans exclude all exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing, or other purposes. This means no meat, fish, dairy, or eggs.Express.co.ukchats to Tea Advisory Panel nutritionist, Dr Emma Derbyshire, to find out whether you should go vegan.
Many people decide to go vegan for environmental benefits, but there are also benefits on the physical side.
Dr Emma Derbyshire said: Clearly, the benefits of going vegan can be very personal.
Increasing concerns about animal welfare and the carbon footprint of foods that we eat are now major drivers behind veganism.
In terms of specific benefits, the potential to help regulate bodyweight is one benefit.
Vegan and vegetarian diets are also higher in fibre, so they help promote a diverse ecosystem of healthy bacteria, helping to support both human gut microbiome and overall health.
Being vegan is a personal choice, however, and there is no right or wrong decision.

You can be a healthy vegan or an unhealthy vegan, depending on what you consume.
Dr Derbyshire said: Vegans should follow healthy eating guidelines which include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day and keep fully hydrated.
Meals should be based on potatoes, bread, rice, pasta or other starchy carbohydrates, opting for wholegrain if possible and include some dairy alternatives, such as soya drinks and yoghurts.
A variety of plant-based protein sources should be eaten and plenty of fluid consumed throughout the day ideally drinking 6-8 cups or glasses which does not need to be just water.
Drinking herbal, plant-based teas, like Rooibos, can contribute to fluid intakes and research has found they are just as hydrating.
A new study on Rooibos also found evidence for cholesterol reduction, blood glucose control, bone health, memory function, sperm viability, immune balance, anti-inflammatory effects plus anti-allergy effects.
You should try to get as many vitamins as possible from your diet, but you may need a little help from tablets.
Dr Derbyshire said: Vegans have been reported to have lower intakes of certain nutrients including vitamin B12, calcium and vitamin D.
Iron and omega-3 fatty acid intakes should also be monitored.
There are also concerns that shifts away from animal-derived proteins which currently are a main providers of dietary choline could impact on intakes and body status of this nutrient.
If these nutrients cant be supplied from food sources, this is when supplements would be warranted that are suitable for vegans.
Standard guidance for vitamin D is that we should consider taking 10 micrograms a day to keep bones and muscles healthy.
She also said: "Take an all-round multivitamin/mineral supplement. Ensure it contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.
"Vegans have been reported to have lower intakes of certain nutrients including vitamin B12, calcium and vitamin D.
" Iron and zinc have a low bioavailability from diets devoid of animal foods. Iodine intakes may also be poor."

While veganism came about as a way of life to protect animals rather than a diet, it has become a diet people stick to when they want to lose weight.
Dr Derbyshire said that opting for a plant-based diet could help you lose weight.
She explained: There is some evidence that plant-based diets could help to reduce body fat in adults who are obese or overweight, and increasingly, there is interest in using vegan diets to help manage the acceleration of overweight and obesity.
Also, emerging research recently published looking at the link between adopting plant-based diets and weight loss found three factors that could be the reason behind the relationship of vegan diets and weight loss.
The first is the reduction of caloric density, the second is improved gut microbiota symbiosis and the third is improved insulin sensitivity.
She said that other work has found that vegan diets are linked to significantly greater weight loss when compared with other diets, such as traditional cholesterol diet habits.
Dr Derbyshire added: It is highly likely that the fibre profile of plant-based foods is responsible for some of these effects.
That said, you can purchase refined, unhealthful vegans foods, high in calories, sugars and saturated fat just as you can if you are not vegan.
So, its very much about making the right choices, monitoring portion sizes and eating a variety of wholesome foods.

Delicious options for plant-based and vegan snacks and sweets in Japan – Japan Today
Posted: at 4:54 pm
In Japan, vegan-friendly options are still in minority. However, recently you can see more vegan products in convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants, etc.
Tokyo, especially, has quite a few vegan options of sweets, snacks, and meals available. At the Tokyo stations, you can even find plenty of souvenirs that are Vegan, gluten-free, and so on.
Unfortunately, the word vegan is not that well understood by many Japanese and there are many that confuse vegans with vegetarians.
Ive also seen products where it would be written vegan, but if you look at the ingredients, youd see honey or dairy products were used in the process of making it.
Here, I will introduce you a few of my favorite sweets and snacks that are vegan/plant-based and will also tell you where you can get them:
Organic Sweet Potato Sticks(Yuki Saibai no Hoshiimo Stikku/) from Natural Lawson
The sweet potato sticks from Natural Lawson can be also found in a small corner of a normal Lawson convenience store. Actually, in Natural Lawson you can find a few vegan snacks and sweets along with many healthy and organic products, that being the reason why I love it so much.
Morinaga Macrobiha()
The Macrobiha biscuits can be found in many places including supermarkets and drug stores and have quite a few flavors to choose from.
My favorites are the nuts and cacao ones that use oat flakes, rapeseed oil, cocoa powder, nuts, beet sugar, and flour.
I always have them between meals and when I crave for something sweet or need a bit more energy to get me through the day.
They are also a perfect match for the coffee, so I recommend trying it.
Konnyaku Jelly
The Konjac Jelly from Mannan Life is super delicious and light, also low in calories and with numerous flavors to choose from. I recommend the pink grapefruit ones and the grape ones.
It is a good snack for summer and you dont have to worry about your diet, either as for 25 grams it only has 25 kcal!
SoyJoy Crispy
SoyJoy protein bars can be found everywhere including supermarkets, convenience stores, and drugstores. They are very filling and come in many flavors.
Also, make sure that on the package it is written crispy as the regular SOYJOY is not vegan.
The company has affirmed that bone char process was, however, used in whitening the sugar.
Edamame
Sometimes, going for simple snacks is the safest and best way to vegans. Between the simple vegan choices, you have dry fruits, fruits, seeds, nuts, chestnuts, and edamame.
I love eating edamame and is also quite a cheap option. You can buy frozen edamame or fresh edamame for about 200 yen and they have it everywhere in Japan.
Depending on the grammage, you can even find it cheaper for just 100 yen (at the 100-yen Lawson, for example).
Potato Chips
I love buying the potato chips from Natural Lawson, but you can find potato chips that are vegan in all supermarkets in Japan. I like the nori flavors the best, but also like buying the simple ones with salt or salt and pepper only.
You can find ume (pickled plum) flavor or other unique flavors, as well, so in Japan, youll have a lot of varieties to choose from when it comes to potato chips.
Beet Chips fromIherb
Iherb has a lot of vegan and gluten-free products, so I love ordering from there.
The Beet Chips are one of the snacks I really enjoy eating and they also have quite a few vegan cookies and veggies chips available.
Rice Brown Cakes from Kaldi
The international shops, such as Kaldi or Jupiter have a variety of snacks that are plant-based, vegan, and gluten-free and one of those is the rice brown cakes with either chia and quinoa or 7 super seeds.
They are super crispy and you can also eat it with some hummus or guacamole on top. It is delicious!
In Kaldi, you can also find vegan chocolate, vegan wine, vegan gummies, gluten-free and vegan bread, nachos, etc.
Here are my best recommendations for vegan and plant-based snacks and sweets in Japan.
If you want to be sure its vegan, I recommend going for Iherb or international shops and if you are looking for a vegan restaurant, you can always check out the HappyCow application.

Even Though He Hasn’t Visited Ohio State, TreVeyon Henderson Has Become One of the Top Leaders in the Buckeyes – Eleven Warriors
Posted: at 4:52 pm
While the rest of us are sitting around binge-watching movies, Netflix shows and old games, TreVeyon Henderson hasnt had much time or interest for that.
Instead, the Ohio State running back commit has been diving nose-first into the written word.
When he hasnt beenbusy with his three-times-a-day workout load, Henderson hasread several books over the past few months. On Tuesday afternoon, the five-star prospects latest page-turner was Grant Cardones Be Obsessed or Be Average, a motivational book recommended to him by Hopewell (Va.) assistant coach Greg Taylor about how the self-made millionaire Cardone created a better life for himself.
It teaches you to be your best and how to set your goals and achieve those goals of what you wanna do and what you wanna be like dont let anybody get in the way of that, Henderson told Eleven Warriors.
Henderson is already a forward-thinking and motivated person one who has worked his way into becoming the top dog among 2021 running backs, one who is continually putting in work to maintain that status and one who wants to winthree national championships when he gets to Ohio State.
Those types of goals and the motivation to work for them are a couple traits that Henderson says the Buckeyes look for in their players.
Its hard to explain it but its essentially being elite and not being average, said Henderson when asked what the coaching staff wants in its players. Thats basically the message. Ohio State wants elite people that wanna be great. They dont want average. They want people who wanna be great and who wanna be leaders and wanna show other people the way.
That message from Ryan Day, Tony Alford and Co. falls perfectly in line with the message from Hendersons latest reading expedition.
And a leader isprecisely what Hendersonsbecome.
Ever since his commitment in March, the Virginia star almost instantly thrust himself into the upper echelon group with Jack Sawyer, Kyle McCord and Ben Christman as one of the top leaders of the Buckeyes 2021 recruiting class, making pitch after pitch to some of Ohio States top-tier remaining targets while building and maintaining relationships with many of them. That includes guys like Jordan Hancock, J.T. Tuimoloau, Emeka Egbuka and Derrick Davis Jr.
I look at myself as a leader, Henderson said. I always talk about how great we can be and that theres so much we can accomplish together. Because I feel like theres so much we can accomplish, just with how tight and how close we are.
Added McCord: As soon as he committed, he dove in 100 percent, and hes been recruiting everyone that weve been going after. Its been great to have him on board since March. To have him on board is something thats definitely helped us and given us momentum recruiting-wise.
Its not just that Henderson is a class leader. Of course the second-highest-ranked player of the entire 18-man group should be, the program would hope, one of the key faces and voices recruiting others.

Its that hes doing this without ever having been to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, breathed in the Shoes atmosphere, taken a tour around the Oval or walked the sidewalk up and down High Street.
It might be unique or out of the ordinary that hes been such a strong advocate for Ohio State without ever having visited. But it might actually be giving the Buckeyes an extra pitch on the recruiting trail.
Having TreVeyon committed without visiting is something we can almost use to our advantage, McCord told Eleven Warriors. If we can get a five-star running back to commit to us and be the second running back in the class, withEvan (Pryor)already being committed, I think that says a lot about the coaching staff and how confident one of the best players in America is.
TreVeyon couldve easily gone to a school he already visited, and he couldve been the guy at that school not that he wont be the guy at Ohio State; he definitely will as the only running back they took in that class. But for him to commit without ever visiting us, says a lot about TreVeyon as a person.
McCords last words there are where we can dig further into why and how Henderson has been at the forefront of the Buckeyes recruits-recruiting-recruits effort.
Henderson has been playing football since he was 6 years old. Hes rushed for more than 20 touchdowns and 1,000-plus yards every year since he started playing, he says, and that on-field production has brought with it almost an obligation to lead.
But that hasnt been an issue for him.
Ive always been a leader, to be honest, Henderson said. Not just in this class but on my team, also. In nearly everything I do, Ive always been a leader. I always think about what I feel is right since I was younger, since Ive been playing football.

Day and director of player personnel Mark Pantoni dont have to tell Henderson or any other commit to go out and recruit another player. It just happens organically.
When Coach Day checks on you, hell ask, How does such-and-such feel about us? Henderson said. And then Ill tell him, I think weve got a great chance of landing him. Hell just tell me to stay on him and things like that. We mainly hit them up ourselves. Nobody has to tell us.
As it stands today, their efforts have helped the Buckeyes piece together the countrys top-ranked class with six months to go before the early signing period. Theres still a lot of work left to do, but they remain the frontrunner to signthe programs first No. 1-ranked recruiting class in the composite ranking era.
The recruits dont care about winning that championship, though. Theyve got their sights on getting the right players into the class to help them win actual titles at Ohio State.
Were not really looking forward to having the No. 1 class, Henderson said.We just want people who are gonna be part of something special and who wanna help us win games. People who just wanna come be great at The Ohio State University.
