22 Stretching Workouts on YouTube That Will Loosen Up Your Tight Muscles – Self

Posted: July 5, 2020 at 11:44 pm

Whether its due to too much sitting, too little movement (or a job that requires lots of it), or simply stress, our bodies are feeling stiff. Thats where stretching workouts come in big, since they can make tight or shortened muscles feel a whole lot better.

Spending just 15 minutes to go through a stretch routine can provide oxygen-rich blood throughout the body to help alleviate tightness where you may be feeling it, Mia Caine, a certified yoga instructor and founder of Health is Wellth in Miami, Florida, tells SELF.

Along with relieving tightness, stretching workouts can also help you move more smoothly by improving your range of motion and increasing your flexibility. But dont worry: It doesnt mean youll have to train with advanced stretching moves, like splitsunless thats your goal, Caine says.

Whether were talking about those challenging flexibility moves that really push your body, or the gentle, easing routines that simply make your muscles feel more fluid and relaxed, the same rule holds true: Whatever stretching you decide to do, it is important to work from where you are, breathe, and gently move your way through any tension you might feel, says Caine. But most importantly, never push yourself into feeling any kind of pain, as that can lead to injury.

So, how do you get started? If the only stretching youre familiar with is the old grade-school standby of touch your toes, weve got you covered. Here, 22 stretching videos and workouts, from 5 minute in-bed routines to muscle-specific sequences recommended by yoga and Pilates expertsall available on YouTube. Best part? Theyre all free, too.

This yoga sequence is great for anyone who runs or needs extra recovery after a good cardio workout. Youll focus on your lower body to stretch out tight hips, hamstrings, calves and more.

Length: 30 minutes

What to expect: A recovery session thats great for many kinds of sports

This workout is great for people who are tight through the legs and hips and are active, like runners, cyclists, triathletes, rock climbers, or weight lifters. So many of us get caught up in moving faster, lifting harder, and jumping higher, but [engaging in] movement that is gentle not only can reduce soreness, but can often also calm the mind. I love Adriene's soothing presence and find that although she is a yogi and very bendy herself, this workout is very accessible for those who are naturally tight. Christie Wang, PMA certified Pilates instructor in Boston

Try the workout.

This short stretching routine focuses on loosening up your shoulders and back using a lacrosse or tennis ball.

Length: 5 minutes

What to expect: A recovery routine using a lacrosse ball

I love this workout because it uses a lacrosse ball or tennis ball, which helps to deepen the stretch. You're using the prop as a way to break up the fascia [connective tissue] around your muscles, which can get super stiff from sitting or working out a ton. Using a lacrosse ball will give you a more targeted release than a foam roller, and is more space effective if you live in a small apartment. This workout is super quick, and I love Charlee's form cues to help you find the right spot. It helps target release in some key areas that get tight from sitting all dayyour back, hips, and shoulders. Wang

Try the workout.

Use this quick hip mobility routine to loosen tight hip flexors while also challenging your core.

Karma Yoga- The Path of Action – Daily Pioneer

Posted: at 11:44 pm

Bhagavad Gita does not subscribe to the view that action is an obstacle to spiritual freedom. It has rather declared that even while remaining fully active in the world of cut-throat competition, one can still keep his inner life anchored in the Divine.

And even while living in the Supreme Self, one can still continue to be fully active in the outer world. This becomes possible when one works in the spirit of karma yoga.Karma yoga is the means of obtaining serenity of mind through selfless performance of works. It is that path of spiritual evolution which highlights the importance of fulfilling all of ones duties without any attachment to the actions or the results thereof. In Gita, Krishana has described the concept of karma yoga in detail. It has been explained as to how one can attain worldly glory and also spiritual growth by doing work with dedication and detachment.

Though chapter three has formally been designated as karma yoga, many other shlokas of different chapters also deal with this subject.A word of caution here. Karma yoga is not the same thing as the doctrine of karma.

Whereas the former relates to the performance of ones duties in a detached manner, the latter refers to the principle which states that every cause has an equal effect.Shloka 2.47 conveys the essential message of karma yoga.

In this famous verse it has been stated that one has the right only to action, and never at all to its fruits. Let not the fruits of action be ones motive ; and at the same time one should never be attached to inaction.

In other words, no one can have complete control over the outcome of an activity. But one should never abandon a work which ought to be done by him. One has a right to choose his actions. But he has no right to choose the results of those actions. He can do whatever he wants to do. He can indulge in noble or evil deeds. But once having done those deeds, he cannot evade or avoid the fruits of those actions.

The result of an action is inherent in the action itself. But how, when and in what shape one obtains those rewards is decided not by ones expectations and desires but by nature. Nature determines results of actions not through any arbitrary diktats but by well defined principles.

One can only strive to understand those principles but no one can ever think of controlling them.Success or failure in any venture depends not only upon the individual concerned but also on many other factors. Apart from the personal efforts, various other forces of nature play an important role in determining the results of ones actions. These forces are governed by the laws of nature. Since nature carries on its work in accordance with these laws, under the will of Ishvara, the Supreme Lord ; these laws are not biased in favour of or against any one.

Therefore, one should never react negatively even if the results obtained are totally contrary to his expectations. One should cultivate an attitude of glad acceptance. The sole purpose of ones actions should not be the rewards of those actions. One must act with the understanding that work is its own reward. Action is for self-fulfilment. Instead of working for narrow selfish interests, one must work keeping in view the larger good.

Gita is a mandate for action. It has cautioned that one should never be attached to inaction. Inertia can never lead to perfection. However arduous, painful or unpleasant ones assigned work may be, one must not run away from it.Krishna has time and again underlined the need for action. At the same time, the importance of detachment from actions and their results has been emphasised.

He has taught that duty must be performed devotedly and wholeheartedly, but without a sense of attachment. Regarding the sense of attachment, it has been explained that all kinds of works are carried out by the three gunas, the modes of material nature.

But ones ego considers itself to be the doer of all actions. It attributes to itself ones talents, skills, actions and their results. When one identifies oneself with the ego, he attaches himself to them all.

He thus remains entangled in various actions. But he who has gained the knowledge of the self always remains aware that the works are done by the body, mind and the intelligence ; and the soul is different from all of them.

He is thus relieved from the false identification of the self with the works. He realises that as the soul, he is actionless and the actions do not belong to him. Accordingly, he does all his assigned work as a matter of duty without any attachment to the works and their results.

He does not give any credit or discredit to himself for various successes or failures of life. He is, thus, not carried away by the ups and downs of life. He who is unattached to works, he is untouched by sorrow. There is great joy in whatever he does.

Why removing the whipping post is important for Delaware | Opinion – The News Journal

Posted: at 11:41 pm

Greg Wilson, Special to the USA TODAY NETWORK Published 3:02 p.m. ET June 30, 2020 | Updated 8:33 p.m. ET June 30, 2020

In one month, the Black Lives Matter protests that followed the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota transformed our national debate. The protests moved beyond a call for an end to white police officers killing unarmed black men to calls for sweeping criminal justice system reform.

As our new national debate informs officials to remove Confederate statues and flags from public squares and NASCAR races, contemporary symbols of police brutality are falling as well. In Philadelphia, the statue of Mayor Frank Rizzo known for his indulgence of police brutality toward minorities was removed out of concern for public safety. In Georgetown, Delaware, a monument to the states own peculiar institution the whipping post is finally being seen for thesavagery it represents and removed.

Sociologist Robert Graham Caldwell in his 1947 book, "Red Hannah: Delawares Whipping Post," chronicled Delawares years of corporal punishment from the mid-1600s through the mid-20th century. Caldwell found between 1900 and 1942 more than 1,600 prisoners were publicly whipped, 66.2 percent were negroes, 65.8 percent were either unskilled laborers or farm hands. For those four decades, African Americans comprised just 16 percent of the states population.

While millions of Americans saw police brutality meted out to George Floyd for allegedly passing a counterfeit$20bill, Delawareans for over 200 years watched prisoners whipped for theft of property of very little value ... less than $10, or for simply stealing chickens.Caldwells research and data shattered myths held by whipping postproponents. He found the post did not deter crime, or reduce recidivism or incarceration.

Delaware reminded free people of color that brutality and white supremacy still reigned seven months after the Civil War ended, when Sarah E. Robinson, an African-American woman, was convicted of larceny. She was whipped with twenty lashes and sold for 5 cents into servitude for seven years.

The whipping posts and public floggings in each of Delawares three counties sullied the states reputation nationwide for decades. In 1912,theSan Francisco Startook Delaware to task for whipping prisoners: In a cruelty that is of the past, she stands alone, and is ashamed in her loneliness. She should awake ... and move forward among those who happily have discarded the ways of savagery. As it is, she earns not only startled wonder, but contempt as well.

In 1931, playwright George Bernard Shaw wrote theNew York Times, in America, the frightfully long periods of solitary confinement and Delawares flogging suggest the civilization of fiends rather than human beings.

In 1935, the warden of the New Castle County Workhouse, Elmer Leach, described the whipping post as a barbaric relic of the past.

Thelast public whipping took place on June 16, 1952. It wasnt until 1972that Republican Gov. Russell Peterson and the Delaware legislature finally removed the whipping post from the Delaware criminal code.

In 1993, the Georgetown Historical Society in Delaware dedicated a whipping post for public display just off the town square. The text on the marker for the post is misleading. While it is accurate on the number of lashes for larceny, it states: During the 1840s many people thought the laws concerning the whipping post should be looked at. In reality, Delawareans fought to abolish the whipping post for over 150 years.

The marker also leaves the impression that the last time a person was whipped in Sussex County was in 1906.In fact, a person was whipped in Sussex County in 1942, for stealing a tire. And the last time a person was whipped in Kent and Sussex Counties happened in 1950.

Dover resident Dr. Reba Hollingsworth remembers the Kent County whipping she witnessed in the late 1930s.

They whipped people on Saturdays, generally, said the 93-year-old woman of color.

She said the white man convicted of stealing chickens, was already chained when I got there.

Her most distinct memory:there was a big crowd ... they were quiet ... I remember the sound of the lash.

When asked about the whipping post and Confederate statues, the former school counselor said, Whipping posts and Confederate monuments should be taken out of the public square, and so we do not forget the history, put into museums.

On Wednesday, the whipping post will finally be removed from public view in Georgetown.

"Now is the time for doing this, said Tim Slavin, director, Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, and shame on us for not doing it sooner."

George Floyds death, countless other deaths from over-policing, and the whipping post in Georgetown remind all Americans how unequal treatment under the law isnt a new trend by any means; its been around for centuries.

A whipping post stands outside the Old Courthouse in Georgetown.(Photo: WILLIAM BRETZGER, DELAWARE NEWS JOURNAL)

Which is why Delawares Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs should work with the state board of education to review how Delaware schools teach race relations, and develop new lesson plans pertaining to corporal punishment, criminal justice reform and Red Hannah.

Delawareans need to know why removing the whipping post matters.

Greg Wilson is a consultant and lives in Wilmington.

Heeding the experts builds a bridge to success – Northern Scot

Posted: at 11:41 pm

UNTIL I looked further into the matter, I had always attributed the phrase, "Two countries divided by a common language", to Winston Churchill. It seems to make sense as he seemed to be referring to his parents, father English, a mother from the United States.

But it seems I shall need to update both my database of quotations and my memory.

Mr Google has taken me to the information that in The Canterville Ghost (1887), Oscar Wilde wrote: "We have really everything in common with America nowadays except, of course, language". He also takes me to the suggestion that George Bernard Shaw said, "England and America are two countries divided by a common language".

The question as to which of Wilde or Shaw originated the phrase, if either did, seems to remain open. I do note that Wilde has a clear claim to 1887 while Shaw's writing career came somewhat later. So I plump for Wilde.

Unless Churchill started using this phrase when he was 13 years old, he has to cede ownership of the phrase.

This is merely a precursor to what attracts my attention in this blog. The dismissal, that's the only word I think I can use, of an expert civil servant, the top civil servant, from the UK's professional team.

The very words 'professional' and 'expert' now seem to be being expunged from the vocabulary of UK Government politicians. It's been coming for a while. Michael Gove said in an interview with Sky News in August 2016 that "people in this country have had enough of experts".

I have sat next to Michael at Turriff Shows on a couple of occasions. At a personal level, I have found him quite engaging. And have not personally heard him repeat that message. But he seemed to find it somewhat difficult to articulate his disagreements with others. Even with me a backbencher in a devolved Parliament.

Clearly, he and I take very different views on a wide range of political issues. He gives me the impression of listening but not hearing. As someone described it of another and in another context, "he is hard of heeding".

But his 2016 words have not gone away. And for the moment at least, they have put experts aside. That's the message of firing the UK's Cabinet Secretary.

Despite having a degree, a modest one, in a specific subject, I regard myself as being interested in almost everything. I am a generalist and proud of it. I, therefore, seek to deploy my analytical skills in listening to and understanding experts in their field.

When we came into government in 2007, we had not a single minute of previous ministerial experience between the lot of us. It would have been perverse not to have asked for the advice of civil servants steeped as they were in their specialist area of knowledge and administration.

We didn't wait long. The election had been on Thursday, May 3. The result was statistically clear. We had a plurality of one. There were 47 SNP members and 82 of other parties. But the political outcome was not.

We did not, because of the rules, have the Irish option of an election in February and the formation of a government in late June.

Our MSPs met within about 40 hours of the last result being declared Saturday at 10.05am.

With us was the senior civil servant who had come prepared with an analysis of our manifesto, an estimated cost for implementing it, and draft proposals for some early legislation.

With that legendary neutrality, the civil service had prepared for every likely outcome of the election. And for some unlikely ones.

Our group had entered the room in some excitement after winning the most seats, but carrying considerable uncertainty about "what next?".

The civil servant added to the steadying influence coming from our political leaders. We could see a practical way forward. All that we needed was to get the politics sorted.

The worked-up proposals brought into the room were not Holy Writ, or wholly writ for that matter. The experts provided evidence to be challenged. The responsibility for the decisions, clearly that of ministers. My first meeting on our government's first Bill, my first Bill, took place before the month was out. Without the experts' preparations, it would have been many months later before meaningful progress.

Not long after that, I found that working out the questions was more important for a minister than knowing the answers.

The problem of rust in the cables of the Forth Road Bridge, opened in 1964 and with a planned service life of 100 years, had been known for some time before the election. The need for a response to the problem was now in my in-tray.

Civil servants arrived with pictures of alternative designs for a replacement crossing. As someone who is an engineer, albeit not a civil engineer, poring over such detail was engaging. The design essentially had two pillars rising from the firth below to join to become one at the top. In the space between the legs was a two-lane carriageway. And hung outside each, were three lanes. A total of eight lanes.

The first question could have been asked by my eight-year-old god-daughter. What are all these lanes for? The outside lanes I was told are for the existing traffic carried in the 1964 bridge.

The inside two lanes were to be built in case we needed a light railway. This meant trams, to cross from Edinburgh to Fife. Probably knowing our government's antipathy, not against trams per se, but certainly against the Edinburgh tram project, they used the words "light rail" rather than tram.

Part of the discussion also focussed on what the future of the 1964 bridge would be. Its problem was the volume and weight of traffic. It had not become incapable of carrying any traffic.

I, therefore, asked why, if required, we couldn't put the tramlines on the 'old' bridge. We looked at that minister. You can't put a railway on a suspension bridge because its sways about under load and because of wind, they said.

So there are no tramlines on suspension bridges anywhere in the world?, I asked. I then requested their previous research into this subject. After a couple of weeks, it transpired that no formal documentation of any previous research could be found.

At this point, I drew their attention to a tram across the Tagus estuary in Lisbon on a suspension bridge. I keep my eyes open when on vacation. But by now they conceded that, yes, a tram could be put on the old bridge.

That couple of questions saved us 1 billion. The two central lanes were removed from the design. But my mind was focussed on other questions. The ones I would be asked in parliament about why we were proposing 'spare' lanes.

I needed the experts. But I also needed to able to challenge them with my questions.

So how are UK ministers going to get on with fewer experts close to their decision-making? The Trump White House may reveal the answer. Very badly indeed.

It's hard work getting your mind around complex questions presented to you by experts. But it is much worse just to rely on gut instinct or the last person you sat beside at a political fundraiser, for advice.

As they say in law, of an accused who conduct their own defence, their advisor has a fool for a client.

The convergence of methods of government between the USA and UK, perhaps no longer divided by a common language, is something I find critically alarming.

Give me expertise over ignorance every day.

Rhode Island fights ODs with ad that asks: ‘Do you know your dealer is a vegan?’ – New York Post

Posted: July 4, 2020 at 4:54 pm

Rhode Island is fighting a sharp uptick in accidental ODs with a provocative online ad campaign Do you know your drug dealer is a vegan? and a fistful of cash to get the message out.

The $500,000 campaign, paid for by the states behavioral healthcare department, targets users who may not know that their dealer could be selling fentanyl and calling it heroin or some other drug.

The ads ask: How well do you know the person who sells you cocaine? Do you trust theres no illegal fentanyl in there? Did you know your drug dealer is vegan?

The point of the campaign is to get people to think about the serious and very often life-threatening consequences of using illicit substances that contain fentanyl a risk of which both the dealer and the user may not be appropriately aware, department spokeswoman Linda Reilly told GoLocalProv.com.

Rhode Island saw a 22 percent spike in accidental drug overdoses in the first quarter of this year.

[WATCH] Can’t Believe It’s Vegan: Pressed BBQ Oyster Mushrooms – The Source Magazine

Posted: at 4:54 pm

Are you interested in veering into the vegan lifestyle but dont know how to make a healthy and tasty meal that will satisfy your tastebuds?

Transitioning into a healthier lifestyle is definitely a challenge when we grew up with certain eating habits. Most people tend to enjoy the seasonings, fattiness and smokiness that comes with eating meat. If you took those factors away and offered them raw meat it probably wouldnt be as appealing.

Oyster mushrooms are a vegan favorite because of its delicate texture and ability to transform. Fried Oyster Mushrooms or sauteed oyster mushrooms are popular choices. A cup of raw oyster mushrooms has 28 calories, 3 grams of protein, 5 grams of carbohydrates, and zero grams of fat. They are a good source of essential vitamins and minerals like riboflavin, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, and copper. The mushrooms have broad, thin, oyster- or fan-shaped caps and are white, gray, or tan, with gills lining the underside. The caps are sometimes frilly-edged and can be found in clusters of small mushrooms or individually as larger mushrooms. Vegan chef Derek Sarno created an innovative press-and-sear technique that capitalizes on meat-like flavor. Pressing the mushrooms between 2 cast irons creates an incredible fatty-like burnt edge that changes the vegan game.

Once pressed and seared, you can serve the charred meat-like mushrooms with your favorite sauce and a knife and fork. You can slice them up to use in a sandwich, top over a quinoa bowl with pickled red onions and kale or skewer them and serve them dry with BBQ sauce .

Watch the technique below!

Would you try this?
