The Oura Ring is the personal health tracking device to beat in 2020 – TechCrunch

Posted: August 12, 2020 at 10:45 pm

The Oura Ring has been getting a lot of attention lately because of its role in a number of COVID-19 studies, as well as its adoption by both the NBA and WNBA as a potential tool for helping prevent any outbreaks of the novel coronavirus as those two leagues get back to a regular schedule of play. Oura has released multiple generations of the Ring, which is a health and fitness tracker that reports a range of data, and Ive spent the past month using one to see what all the fuss is about.

The Oura Ring is a health tracker thats unlike just about any other wearable with a similar purpose. Its a ring thats virtually indistinguishable from an actual ring without any smart features, available in a couple of different designs and multiple finishes. The Ring has sensors located on the inside surface, but these barely add to its overall thickness and are totally hidden when the ring is worn.

Despite its small size and low profile, the Oura Ring is still a connected device, with an internal battery, and the ability to talk to a smartphone via Bluetooth to transmit the data its sensors collect. In the box, you also get a USB-C stand for the Oura Ring that powers it up via induction charging.

The built-in battery is good for up to seven days of continuous use and that includes wearing the Oura Ring during sleep. During my usage, that seemed to be an accurate estimate. In general, though, the battery life just seemed to be long enough, prompting me not to really think about specific spans, and charging is so quick that its easy to just remember to put it on the dock occasionally when its convenient (I would often do this during the work day while at my desk, where I keep the Oura dock). Ouras app also sends helpful notifications to remind you to charge before bed when youre getting close to the end of your rings battery life.

Ouras design for this most recent iteration of their Ring is fantastic both as just a piece of jewelry and doubly so as a connected health and activity tracker. Its available in two styles, called Balance and Heritage, both of which come in multiple metallic finishes. Theres a polished silver and gloss black option for both, while Balance has a premium-priced version with inlaid diamonds, and Heritage has a matte black finish option (which I reviewed).

All the various finishes ore made of a lightweight titanium, with a molded plastic inner to protect the sensors and provide transparency for them to work. The exterior finishes are all coated with a scratch-resistant outer layer but like with just about any other metal jewelry, scratch-resistant isnt scratch-proof. The matte black finish I reviewed is definitely showing some wear and tear after multiple weeks of use, but thats something I was fully expecting, and its surprisingly resilient, given how often it comes in contact with other metal surfaces, stone and whatever else you come in contact with on a daily basis. The minor blemishes that appear lend it a pleasing patina, rather than negatively impacting its aesthetics, in my opinion.

The Oura Ring is also fixed in terms of sizing and fit, and the company has come up with a clever way to handle ensuring a good fit for customers. They offer a free sizing kit that they ship out first so you can figure out which Oura size is most comfortable, and decide on which finger you want to wear it. Size is important because you want the Oura Ring to fit snugly enough that it wont fall off or shift around too much, but also not too snugly that it becomes uncomfortable.

Ultimately, the design is fantastic because its both an attractive ring, and an incredibly comfortable device to wear all day and through the night. Unlike even an Apple Watch or other wrist-worn wearable, theres virtually no adjustment required for getting used to wearing it while sleeping, or any discomfort from various types of bands. Its the first wearable Ive used where I truly was able to forget that I was wearing one at all, and its one that no one else will realize youre wearing, either.

So what does the Oura Ring actually track? A lot of things, actually. It measures sleep, as mentioned, as well as various other metrics under two broad categories: Readiness and Activity. Sleep, Readiness and Activity all provide one overall summary score out of 100 to give you a topline sense of where you are, but each is actually calculated from a range of sub-metrics that add up to that larger score.

Ouras sleep tracking is much more in-depth than the forthcoming Apple Watch sleep tracking that Apple is releasing with its next watchOS update in the fall. It monitors when you go to sleep, how long you sleep, how much of that qualifies as deep and how much is REM, and gives you a metric or you sleep efficiency, your time in bed, your total sleep time and more. Readiness tracks your ambient body temperature, heart rate variability, respiratory rate and your resting heart rate, while activity automatically measures calorie burn, inactive time, your steps and how close you are to your overall activity goal.

For all three of these categories, you can dive into each individual sub-metric and see trends over time or individual scores per day, but you also can just look at the overall score, which is provided in a feed-like dashboard in the app and accompanied by practical, actionable advise about what to do with your day, your activity or your sleep habits based on that score and how its trending.

Its at once both the easiest to understand health tracking app Ive used, and also one of those with the most depth when it comes to digging into what is actually being tracked, and what that means in greater detail. And because the app focuses heavily on establishing a baseline and then monitoring deviations from that baseline and providing advice based on that, its more likely to be useful and specifically relevant to you.

With most wearable tech, including the Apple Watch, I periodically have a sort of internal revolt where I end up finding them too much of an intrusion, or too much of a hassle to maintain continuous use. With the Oura Ring, health self-monitoring reaches a perfect pinnacle of combining convenience with useful and actionable information, with an unobtrusive and attractive design that actually makes me want to put it on.

The jury remains out on whether the Oura Ring can actually accurately detect COVID-19 or anticipate the onset of its symptoms, but regardless, its a fantastic personal health tracking device and a great tool for anyone looking to take more control over how they feel on a daily basis. And by actively establishing an individual baseline and comparing your actual overall state to that every day, Oura provides one of the best potential platforms for long-term personal wellness insight out there.

NJBIA Statement on Reopening of Health and Fitness Clubs – InsiderNJ

NJBIA Statement on Reopening of

Health and Fitness Clubs

NJBIA President and CEO Michele Siekerka issued the following statement regarding Thursdays Senate Fiscal Recovery Strategists Committee held in Trenton. The discussion revolved around the challenges faced by health and fitness clubs in returning to business.

NJBIA thanks Chairman Sarlo and the members of the committee for conducting Thursdays public hearing on the impacts of COVID-19 on New Jerseys health and fitness clubs.

While we recognize an uptick in our states rate of transmission and positivity tests, we know from looking at neighboring states such as Connecticut and Pennsylvania that health and fitness clubs are not responsible for spreading the virus and can reopen safely. In New Jersey, the data shows that social gatherings are the cause for our current spread.

National health data and surveys show that these facilities operating under appropriate guidelines, with good hygiene and social distancing measures saw no increase in COVID-19 transmission and have an occurrence rate of .0004%.

The economic impact of this industry in New Jersey is significant, employing 53,000 in over 1,100 facilities. Having now been closed for over five months and with no opening in sight, the economic impacts to these businesses, their workforce and the states economy cannot be understated.

The administration can protect public health and balance economic health appropriately by allowing these facilities to open with the proper safeguards that are known to protect public health nationwide and regionally.

Tea, milk and other drinks to help you sleep – Martinsville Bulletin

Posted: at 10:45 pm

Chamomile tea

Is it time for a cup of chamomile? Chamomile tea is a sedative and sleep aid traditionally used in different parts of Iran.

Chamomile extract, a2017 studyfound, improved the sleep quality of older adults and their daily performance in comparison to those who received a placebo.

"It's full of antioxidants, promotes calmness and can reduce anxiety," Schmitt said.

Ashwagandha, a revered herb of Indian ayurvedic alternative medicine, has traditionally been used to calm the nerves. It might work by mimicking the function of gamma-aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter that inhibits excited responses.

"When you activate this receptor, it makes you sleepy," Dasgupta said. "Many sleep aids that we take work on GABA."

Ashwagandha may help the bodywind downand prepare for sleep, as well as improve overall sleep quality.

Originally hailing from Europe and Asia, valerianis a plant used to treatinsomnia, anxiety, depression and menopause symptoms.

Most of the benefits have been in alleviating insomnia and improving sleep quality for menopausal women. Nearly a third of postmenopausal women who took a valerian capsule twice daily for four weeks reported better sleep quality, found onestudy.

Valerian "does work on the (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptor" that controls excited neural activity, Dasgupta said.

Thanks to the tryptophan, calcium and magnesium in dairy, drinking warm milk before bed may help you sleep better. The warmth makes the beverage more soothing and easier to digest, Dasgupta said.

"Tryptophan's the amino acid that goes on to produce things like melatonin," he said.

"We know that melatonin is a natural hormone in your body produced by the pineal gland. And it's secreted at night and it really is part of helping you try to get that good night's sleep."

Golden milk is a traditional Indian drink with milk, cinnamon, ginger and turmeric and turmeric is rich in the component curcumin. Curcumin hasanti-inflammatoryeffects and the potential to treat symptoms of anxiety and depression, which can interfere with sleep.

"Turmeric has also been associated with good sleep," but how inflammation affects sleep hasn't yet been fully defined, Dasgupta said. "But anything that helps with pain, with anxiety or induces some form of muscle relaxation can always be helpful with getting good sleep."

Lemon balm, a lemon-scented herb that derives from the same family as mint, has been traditionally used for improving mood in addition to flavoring meat, seafood and baked goods.

The herb may help to reduce insomnia symptoms. A2011 studyfound a 42% reduction in participants' insomnia symptoms after they received lemon balm extract daily for 15 days.

Passionflower tea, brewed from the dried leaves, flowers and stems of the Passiflora plant, has been used to enhancesleep qualityand alleviate anxiety.

Ina trialwhere participants drank a cup of passionflower tea, kept a sleep diary and completed an anxiety questionnaire for one week, sleep quality was significantly better for those who drank tea in comparison to the placebo.

Passionflower tea in combination with valerian was as effective as Ambien, a common medication for insomnia, in improving sleep quality in a2013 study.

If cow's milk sends you on too many trips to the bathroom or results in allergic reactions, almond milk is another good source of tryptophan, Dasgupta said.

One 8-ounce glass of almond milk also has around 20 milligrams ofmagnesium, a mineral that helps to support the sleep by regulating neurotransmitters to calm our nervous systems and working with melatonin to control our bodies' sleep-wake cycles.

Tart cherry juice may increase your melatonin levels and the time you sleep, stay in bed and feel rested afterward, according to asmall studyof healthy adults. Tart Montgomery cherries have been reported to contain high levels of melatonin.

Despite the reported benefits of these beverages, most of the studies haven't compared if one method of consumption such as pills, powder or tincture is more fast-acting than the other, Dasgupta said. Talking with your physician about sleep aids is important, especially if you would be consuming them in combination with alcohol or medications.

And although herbal supplements may help you fall asleep, Dasgupta said, they could interfere with revealing the true underlying cause of poor sleep.

"Getting good sleep is like a puzzle," he added. "It's so hard to have all the right puzzle pieces for sleep. And when you try to find which one you're missing, that's the hard part."

Make sure to try to put all the puzzle pieces together, including room temperature, light exposure, bedding, sound and routine.

Although he doesn't buy in to all the existing research, Dasgupta doesn't discount "a little non-caffeinated chamomile tea before bed as part of your ritual as you turn off the technology and sit down," he said. "I think those things are really good."

Experts Explain What’s at Stake in the 2020 Election When It Comes to Women’s Health – POPSUGAR

Posted: at 10:45 pm

With the 2020 election less than three months away, all eyes are on the showdown between the incumbent Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. The former has repeatedly waged attacks on women's rights, particularly when it comes to healthcare issues including (but not limited to) Title X funding, access to contraception, and a longheld mission to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Of course, President Trump is hardly the only politician who poses a threat to women's health. It's equally important to educate ourselves about the healthcare policies and voting records of Congressional, state, and even local candidates. Most campaigns have websites that include comprehensive information about a candidate's policies, so you can become well-versed on where they stand on the issues that are most important to you. If a candidate's stance on a particular issue isn't available to the public, contact them and request a clear answer on the actions they plan to take if elected. To get you started, we've rounded up six of the most pressing issues on the ballot in November, according to doctors and policy experts.

From Stretching to TV Time Here’s What 5 Fitness Pros Do on Their Rest Days – POPSUGAR

Posted: at 10:45 pm

Fitness Pros on Their Favorite Rest-Day Activities

Just like it took me a bit to get into the home workout groove when gyms closed, I also had to work at establishing a healthy rest-day schedule.

Once I discovered the at-home workouts I actually liked, and after my resistance bands and dumbbells arrived in the mail, I got in the habit of intensely working out every single day which isn't ideal because I wasn't giving my body the proper time to recover and repair. I was potentially setting myself up for an injury and stunting my own fitness goals.

Just because I could do a workout in the comfort of my own living room with just a click of a button, doesn't mean I should do so every single day.

After some reading on establishing a workout routine for my goals, I finally got it down and now look forward to my days off from exercise. I turn off my alarm clock so I can wake up naturally, with help from the sun peaking through my curtains. I try to spend my rest days as digitally unplugged as possible, too truly "resting" in every sense of the word. Sometimes I go for long, leisurely walks, other times I kick back on the couch and read through a few chapters of a new book.

Getting my routine in order made me start wondering what fitness pros do on their rest days, so I reached out to five experts from Pilates instructors to certified personal trainers to find out.

For Mercedes Owens, a Chicago-based Barry's instructor, time spent with a good book always makes the list oh, and some puppy bonding time, too, of course.

"My favorite rest-day activity is spending a couple of hours at the park with my dog, Leia, and a good book. I almost always keep a lineup of love stories, family dramas, and thrillers. Right now I'm reading Commonwealth by Ann Patchett and A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum," Owens says.

CorePower Yoga senior master trainer, Anthony Chavez makes self-care a priority on rest days. "I cue up whatever show I'm currently obsessed with on Netflix, then grab myself a treat (glass of wine on some days or Oreos whatever I'm craving!). Give yourself permission to 'take off your life' and rest in ways that are self-indulgent. Rest is just as essential as exercise is for vibrant, human health, which is why it's so important to me!"

But Chavez still incorporates movement on rest days, too just in a different way.

"Second favorite rest-day activity is to incorporate stretching and body work. We all work so hard in the gym and at work. Carving out dedicated time to deeply stretch your muscles and connective tissue by doing some yin style poses actually helps me sleep better, which in turn promotes better recovery. Body work can also be getting a massage or investing in something like the Hypervolt by Hyperice to help breakdown and massage muscles when you can't get an appointment from your favorite body worker! Ultimately, lean into doing things that fill you with joy and allow you to fully rest and reset," Chavez says.

Light activity like walking, hiking with his dog, and yoga is an essential part of Mindbody Fitness Expert and NASM-certified personal trainer Keegan Draper's rest days, too.

"I never truly take a complete rest day," Draper says. "I don't believe that taking a day to just lay around is the best for our body, or for recovery, so I always like to do some light physical activity. It's easy to do, gets me out in the sunshine with the vitamin D, and is a nice way to meditate/clear my mind. This also helps get my heart rate above resting and helps get oxygen and nutrients spread out to the muscles that need them the most. I can still manage to get my daily steps in, too!"

For Pure Barre teacher, Shantani Moore, spending time at the beach and spinning poi is one of her favorite things to do on rest days, but Moore also mentions strolling around her neighborhood with tea at sunrise.

"I'll even silence my phone sometimes or just turn it off entirely," Moore says. "It's so important to unplug and have that time to reset. I try to take a different route each time to keep it fresh, and sometimes I get some of my best ideas while I'm out!"

Sometimes, though, Moore mentions that rest days mean doing absolutely nothing: "Wake up, brush my teeth, hit the couch, and just veg. I think doing nothing gets a bad rep sometimes. When you're so physically active and on your grind most of the week, it's important to give yourself time to just eat hummus and binge Queer Eye. I mean, what else would you do on your day off?"

Where Will Peloton Be in 5 Years? – Motley Fool

Posted: at 10:45 pm

You've probably seen television commercials for its products even if you're not terribly familiar with the company's fiscal performance. Peloton Interactive (NASDAQ:PTON), maker of web-connected fitness equipment, has made sure consumers know what its brand is all about. That marketing effort may even be the key reason Peloton shares have performed so well since the company went public in September. Enthusiasm can be infectious, sometimes in unexpected ways.

Investors who anticipate that Peloton will still be turning heads five years from now the same way it does today, however, may want to adjust their expectations. Indeed, the stock's highest-growth days may already be in the rearview mirror.

To its credit, Peloton's equipment addresses two of the health and fitness industry's biggest challenges.

First, it offers a true gym-like experience at home, complete with a personal workout leader and a virtual class of fellow Peloton treadmill and exercise bike owners. Even when tired and distracted consumers might be ready to skip a session, a feeling of community may keep them engaged.

Second, at-home exercises equipment saves time. Users don't have to drive to and from the gym and then wait for apparatus to become available. A workout can be started in finished in a few minutes.

The combination of these two solutions translated into equipment sales of $420.2 million during its most recently completed quarter, and subscription revenue of $98.2 million. The company believes subscriber growth and subscription revenue persisted into the current quarter, which will be reported on Sept. 10. The unique challenges of getting and staying fit in a world upended by COVID-19 has certainly accelerated Peloton's growth.

The odds of Peloton Interactive maintaining its current degree of interest and buzz into 2025, however, are low simply because the company's equipment and technology don't address three other big challenges for the fitness industry.

Chief among those challenges is consumer fickleness.

The idea of simplified fitness inspires well-intended plans today. As is the case with any fitness regimen, discipline and commitment are the ultimate key. Not many people have a whole lot of it. The numbers vary from one study to the next, but most research on the subject suggests that between half and two-thirds of paying members rarely if ever actually step foot in their gyms.

Again, Peloton addresses part of the challenge -- the "gym" is at home. Accessibility isn't necessarily the impasse, however. As fellow fool Nicholas Rossolillo explained of a Gallup poll taken late last year, about half of all fitness tracker owners said they were only "somewhat helpful," which could suggest that consumers don't fully utilize those purchases. Other studies suggest about half of all activity trackers stop being used within a matter of months. Those wrist-worn devices are an even more accessible path toward better fitness than Peloton equipment is, and many consumers won't even consistently wear them for more than a few weeks.

Another challenge that could slow Peloton's growth is the price point. The company's exercise bikes start at a retail cost of around $2200. Treadmills go for more than $4000. There's a market for high-end fitness equipment, but not a huge one, although the company offers financing plans to make its products more affordable.

The company is reportedly answering the call. Peloton CFO Jill Woodworth said last month that a cheaper treadmill was in the works, and there are also whispers that the company is working on a rowing machine. Those products may simply materialize at a later time.

It would be a strategic shift with some tricky nuances though. Namely, lower-cost equipment would pit it directly against better-established names like Nautilusand NordicTrack. It's also unsurprising to learn that other equipment makers are moving into the subscription-based fitness routine market. Mirror and Tonal are just a couple of the names aiming at Peloton's subscription customers, and any of them could eventually undercut Peloton's subscription prices in a big way.

Finally (and in the same vein), Peloton doesn't offer a follow-on purchase that would make sense for existing equipment owners to add to their collection. Sure, there may be some consumers to add a rowing machine and/or a treadmill to their exercise bike. Money and room become something of an issue for the average consumer though.

The irony is, a currently unprofitable Peloton Interactive may be out of the red by 2025. It's lost $160 million through the first three quarters of its fiscal 2020, but it's not difficult to see where things are going. Guidance for a top line of more than $1.7 billion this year is only a start. Five years from now, recurring and profitable subscription revenue could boost the top line in a big way.

The bigger and better Peloton gets between now and then, however, the more competitions steps up and copies its products with cheaper versions. In the meantime, a stock priced at more than 13 times the company's trailing sales suggest the best-case scenario is already priced in.

Bottom line? Peloton may still be the premier name in the business come 2025, but fitness equipment is a tough business. Just ask Nautilus, Schwinn, and Icarian Fitness, all three of which effectively drove one another into bankruptcy in the early '90s by chasing into the same fitness craze that took shape in the late '80s. The industry just doesn't lend itself to defensive moats. Peloton's only moat right now is the brand name's prowess, and that's cost the organization nearly $400 million in marketing and sales spending this year... about one-fourth of its revenue. The company can't spend like that forever.

Machine Gun Kelly Opens Up About His Fitness and Training Routine – Men’s Health

Posted: at 10:45 pm

Machine Gun Kelly tightens his grip on his kettlebells and fights to straighten his back, finally standing tall after a three-second battle with gravity. Hes midway through his last set of offset-stance deadlifts during this Friday workout, legs wobbling as he struggles to stand upright.

And then he does one more, because he isnt quitting now. These workouts are critical, forging mental toughness and explosive athleticism. As you might guess given his over-the-top moniker, MGK (real name: Colson Baker) is prone to over-the-top statements. I have no desire to just be a muscly version of myself, he says. Its the moments onstage that will define my live-performance legacy.

Its also the moments onstage that MGK loves, but both body and mind have to be ready to survive them. Hes planning to go on tour as soon as concerts are allowed again (his next album, Tickets to My Downfall, drops September 25), and hes also flexing his acting muscles, including in the new Netflix sci-fi thriller Project Power (streaming August 14). His music lies somewhere between that of blink-182 and 50 Cent, and every gig is a blend of rock, hip-hop, and calisthenics: He climbs rigging, hangs by one leg, leaps on and off speakers, and basically never stops moving. And he wants to do more.Im looking for the next thing, he says, where people will think Im a Terminator onstage and say, That cant be human. (See? Over-the-top.)

So five days a week, the six-foot-four, 180-pound 30-year-old works with Los Angelesbased trainer Nic Shimonek. Before they met, MGKs training amounted to pickup hoops at a neighbors house. Then nearly two years ago, he was contacted by Shimonek on Instagram and noticed that he worked with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.

The universe, I trust it, MGK says. If it leads me to click on somebodys name, there has to be a reason. Shimoneks workouts push MGK to develop muscle and stamina. He typically does two upper-body sessions and two lower-body sessions weekly, with an active recovery day in between. Today hes fighting through a total-body blast. Before the deadlifts, he did incline presses with Fatbells, basketball-shaped weights that alleviate the wrist pain he has from years of playing guitar.

Now hes battling through pushup shoulder tapsand casting occasional glares at Shimonek. He has a love-hate relationship with everything we do, the trainer says. He hates a lot of things that we just have to grind through. But he loves what it does for his body.

MGK and his band frequently perform for longer than their contracts mandate, sometimes staying onstage for two hours.

When you physically feel good, mentally feel good, he says, we want to play more. He also puts in late nights in the studio working on more music.

Aside effect of his hard work: He may add some action-hero muscle, too. One of his final moves in this session is a seated row with explosive Jammer arms, an exercise that helps his posture. But MGK loves how it focuses on his massive back tattoo, which the paparazzi routinely shoot. The more I see pictures of my back, the more I want to add muscle to it, he says, to change the landscape of how it looks over time.

Hes already changed plenty about his body, and he hopes people notice. Im not Dwayne The Rock Johnson, he says. But people should look at me and think, If this guy can get into the gym, I can, too.

Do each move for 40 seconds, then rest 20. Do 4 rounds.

1. Spider-Man Lunge with Rotation

Set up in pushup position, then move your right foot alongside your right arm. Raise your righthand toward the ceiling. Reverse.

2. Shoulder-Tap Pushup

Do a pushup. Lift your right hand and tap your left shoulder. Return to pushup position and repeat on the other side.

3. Staggered Stance Squat

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, then shift your left toe to lineup with your right heel. Lift your left heel. Lower into a squat; stand back up. Thats 1 rep.

Ten laws of health and fitness, part three – Galway Advertiser

Posted: at 10:45 pm

So we are half way through the 10 fundamental laws of health and fitness, and moving on to number 6, 7, and 8 this week.

Sometimes when we start getting fit again we get too focused on the scales and really approach getting fit too seriously. Do yourself a favour, set a goal, walk away from your scale, tape measure, and mirror, and go play! Take a class, sign up for a race, explore, meet new people, and challenge yourself. There is so much we can do when getting fit and active. I would really encourage you to play a sport, or at least have people to train with if at all possible. I go for a run with Brian Maher, Thos Hayes, and James Ledingham every Sunday. Not only is there great craic on the run, it makes the time fly. If it is rainy or you are not feeling it, it is great to have someone to keep you accountable.

The take away message here is eat healthy food, exercise often at a good intensity with others, and getting fit will take care of itself.

You need to have at least a 30 day plan that you follow. No exceptions. You cannot succeed if you are making it up one day at a time. I have an Excel spreadsheet of all my training sessions, including intensity and duration for the next month. This is vital. You need to write down your plan in advance, and preferably have a training partner on the same plan so that you are accountable to each other.

Make a discipline of writing out a plan at the start of each month and then sticking to it. This will help you to progress your training safely, allow you to plan appropriate rest, and finally take daily decision-making out of it. If you just 'wing it' every day then you will find that you talk yourself out of training a lot. Set the plan, and then follow through. Remember the 5 Ps - Poor Planning leads to Pretty Poor Performance.

With everardpilates.com we provide the accountability and provide weekly sample plans so you put structure into your training.

Increased frequency and intensity of training should be accompanied by increased flexibility, core control, and functionality. I have worked with Olympic athletes, a European championship rugby club, and numerous inter-county hurlers and footballers, making sure that as they get fitter they stay moving correctly and do not become stiff. It is vital for the world class athlete and it is vital for the 55 year old woman who is training to do her first couch to 5k.

Without good movement all we are doing is building fitness on dysfunction. Yes, we can get fitter, but if this results in you getting stiffer then it will ultimately lead to injury, breakdown, and a plateau in fitness. You need at least one session per week where you work on improving your movements, flexibility, and core control. This is the fountain of youth. It reduces sprains and strains in your back, shoulders, hips, knees, and neck, and helps protects bones, muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments. We can turn back the clock but only if we take measures to improve our flexibility and functionality.
