The pros and cons of running, and why the benefits often outweigh the risks – msnNOW

Posted: at 12:56 am

Simon Winnall/Getty Images Running is a great form of physical exercise that can help build strong bones and strengthen muscles. Simon Winnall/Getty Images

The Sports & Fitness Industry Association estimates that over 50 million Americans jog or run regularly, making it one of the most common forms of exercise.

Running comes with many physical and mental health benefits, but it can also lead to injury. Here's what you need to know about whether or not running is bad for you, and how to prevent yourself from getting hurt.

Because running is a repetitive, weight-bearing exercise meaning you work against gravity injuries are common. The Cleveland Clinic estimates about 60% of runners experience a running-induced injury severe enough to warrant a break from the exercise.

Certain factors, like not having the correct running shoe, can make runners more prone to injury since shoes help cushion the impact from landing.

However, the most common reason runners get injured is because they do "too much too soon," says Jessica Zarndt, DO, an assistant clinical professor at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Runners can avoid injury by monitoring their own fitness level and ensuring they are not overtraining.

In particular, increasing weekly running distance too rapidly can cause injury. A 2014 study in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy of 874 healthy runners found that people who increased their weekly running distance by more than 30% per week were about one and a half times more likely to get injured than those who upped distance by less than 10% per week.

Most running injuries occur due to repetitive force on the knees, shins, and feet. According to the Cleveland Clinic, some examples of common running injuries are:

Most overuse injuries can be treated with rest, ice, and pain medication like aspirin or ibuprofen as needed. However, Core Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Clinic recommends seeing a doctor if the pain does not subside after a week of rest.

Running and jogging are associated with many cardiovascular benefits. However, with the growing popularity of long-distance running events like marathons and half-marathons, researchers have started to examine the cardiac risks of logging double-digit miles.

While there have been worrying instances of sudden cardiac arrest during marathons, most occurred in middle-aged males, a subgroup that is already at risk.

In general, marathon running carries a low risk of cardiac arrest, and most deaths in this setting are due to pre-existing coronary artery disease.

Running is associated with many health benefits. Regular running can help you build strong bones, strengthen muscles, improve cardiovascular health, and maintain a healthy weight.

Running also comes with mental health benefits. While running, your body releases hormones called endorphins. Some say that endorphins put you in a temporary euphoric state referred to as a "runner's high." Exercise also increases the amount of endocannabinoids natural substances similar to cannabis in your blood, which tend to produce feelings of calm. Both of these substances can promote overall senses of well-being, and may even ward off depression and anxiety.

Additionally, running boosts life expectancy. A 2014 study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology surveyed over 50,000 runners and non-runners. It found that running even five to ten minutes a day at speeds under 6 mph reduced the risk of death from all causes, including cardiovascular disease.

Runners had a 30% to 45% lower risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality compared to non-runners and lived 3 years longer on average. The benefits increased with running frequency and distance. However, there was a slight uptake in mortality rates among those who exceed 176 minutes of running per week.

While The United States Department of Health & Human Services recommends completing between 75 to 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week, even a small amount of running can make a difference for your health. "I encourage us all to challenge ourselves to be our best," says Zarndt. "If your best is starting with 10 minutes a day, that's a great start!"

The benefits of running for both your mental and physical health far outweigh the risks. However, running can often lead to chronic injuries like shin splints and stress fractures due to the overuse of muscles and joints.

The key to avoiding injury when running is to start with short distances and a slow pace. Then, you can build speed, duration, and distance gradually to prevent overdoing it. If you are unsure where to start, consult your doctor to come up with a training plan.

Tone It Up Launched a Colorful Collection With APL, and I Want Every Pair – POPSUGAR

Posted: at 12:56 am

I love my APLs. I tried the TechLoom Waves and decided they are good for just about every workout. I also have a pair of the TechLoom Phantoms that I love for treadmill workouts, lifting, and walking around the city, and I love that they come in dozens of fun colorways. So when APL announced they were doing a collection with Tone It Up trainers and fitness influencers Karena Dawn and Katrina Scott, I couldn't wait to check it out.

Not only were my beloved TechLoom Waves part of the three-shoe collection, but the other pairs looked fun as well. There's a pair of slides with a colorful palm print and big APL logo, and more sleek pair of quilted Ascend high-top training shoes that will elevate your low-impact at-home workout or street style. Since the Tone It Up trainers have been fans of APL for years, often sporting them in their workout videos and Instagram photos, it was a natural fit.

"Our partnership came together super organically," they told POPSUGAR. And while they partnered with Adam and Ryan Goldston, the founders of APL who led the design process, the trainers brought their personal styles into creating the shoes. You can spot the details in the shoes themselves: the TechLoom Waves have "ciao bella" in script on the back of the shoes, inspired by Scott's babymoon to Italy. "Tone It Up" is inscribed on the soles of the sneakers, and the palm print of the slides evokes a tropical vibe, like the duo's sunny location in Manhattan Beach, CA.

The TechLoom Waves and Ascend sneakers are both great for walking, low-impact at-home workouts, such as bodyweight and resistance band moves, and their sculpting workouts. The TechLoom Waves are a bit more supportive, so they're better for more high-impact moves, cross training, or lifting weights. I've also worn TechLoom Waves for short treadmill workouts, but aren't ideal for long-distance runs.

Just like us, Dawn and Scott have been trying to stay on track with their home workouts and fitness goals, but acknowledge it's tough. They recommend having an accountability partner, someone you can check in with and make sure you stick to your workouts. Right now that might be outdoor socially-distanced jogs or bike rides, or at-home workouts over Zoom. They have also been doing more yoga to stay calm and centered (we could all use that right now!), and strength workouts to feel "strong and empowered."

Whether you want to up your at-home workout game new, stylish gear always makes working out a little more fun or need some new sneakers for your socially-distanced walks, scroll through and check out each shoe, including the playful sandals you can wear to the beach or on vacation even as summer winds down.

7 Foods That May Help Ease Symptoms of PCOS, According to Dietitians – POPSUGAR

Posted: at 12:55 am

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a condition that affects up to 12 percent of women of reproductive age and is associated with symptoms like irregular periods, excess hair growth, insulin resistance, and oily skin, though they present differently from person to person. If you've received this diagnosis, you may be wondering how the foods you eat can influence your symptoms.

"Contrary to what you might read on the internet, there is no one right diet for PCOS," Melissa Azzaro, a registered dietitian and author of A Balanced Approach to PCOS, told POPSUGAR. However, Azzaro did offer some general guidelines for how to eat in order to better manage your symptoms. These include balancing your blood sugar with plenty of protein, fiber, and healthy fats; following an anti-inflammatory diet, which includes foods like omega-3-rich seafood and nuts; consuming plenty of antioxidants in the form of colorful fruits and vegetables; and minimizing your consumption of inflammatory fats and processed carbohydrates.

So, while there is no one-size-fits-all PCOS diet, there are some foods that seem to help manage PCOS symptoms more than others. Here are seven dietitian-approved foods you should try.

Life coaching with Khabib: Dapper UFC star reveals he is releasing a course to teach people ‘how to be a champ in life & business’ – RT

Posted: at 12:54 am

UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov has announced plans to school people outside the octagon, revealing that he is "ready to share" a new course giving the public his wisdom on time management, motivation, teamwork and more.

The UFC star can be seen presenting his new course, 'Become a Champion in Life', in a suit and bow tie on "global online university" Megacampus, where he features as a tutor alongside the likes ofEvgeniy Chernyak one of Ukraine's richest men and Russian fashion model and businesswoman Oxana Samoylova.

Offering fans access for around $32 a month, Megacampus touts Nurmagomedov as "one of the most successful representatives of showbusiness" and "a global brand around which many businesses are built and an international audience gathers."

Across three months and 17 lessons, the masterclass pledges to help "those who agree to win"explore Nurmagomedov's life story, how he arranges his work schedule, insights into business, personal growth and goal completion and the principles that allow the 31-year-old to "be himself".

He lists "strength, dignity and respect" as the three elements that made himthe first modern Russian UFC champion andare essential to victory in sport and life, as well as the "hard work, discipline and ability to maintain concentration" that have allowed him to "confidently develop" a powerful brand and partnerships with the likes of Reebok, Toyota and Gorilla.

The marketing materials show photos from his heavily-followed Instagram account and formative years and mention his business decisions this year, including buying a 25 percent stake in a telecom operator, founding an agency for the development of Islamic tourism, establishing a shoe and clothing company, running a martial arts school and engaging in an agricultural business.

"Khabib is popular but not public," declares the promotional page. "According to him, he does not seek to be in the public eye and attract more attention to himself than his status requires.

"At the same time, the activity of the soldier extends to the entire globe...he donates money from battles to foundations, builds new hospitals in Nigeria, develops entrepreneurship in Dagestan, launches sports and educational projects for children and adolescents.

"Restraint, a sober assessment of the situation and a clear understanding of the goal allow an athlete to be successful in any endeavors and save energy for new achievements."

Fans are warned that achieving success comparable to the unbeaten fighter's spectacular career in the Octagon is no easy task. As Nurmagomedov is seen studying a book in an ornate armchair, potential students are told that they will be given tips to inspire and reward a team, "get rid of fears and prepare for new frontiers" and "make all your dreams come true."

He is seen at a weigh-in next to a section on developing a winning instinct, taking a selfie with fans next to a chapter that includes "managing euphoria" and sitting with his late father, Abdulmanap, and Russian president Vladimir Putin as part of a module onself-education and "choosing a worthy mentor".

"I have gained experience and knowledge," he announced, breaking away from social media posts documenting his preparations for his return to UFC action against Justin Gaethje on October 24.

"I am ready to share it. This isn't about fighting. Its about how to properly manage time, set priorities, how to assemble a team of like-minded people and motivate them. How to be a champion in life and in business."

The course, available in English and Russian, is scheduled to launch on October 5.

Stroke Survivor Pivots Life Purpose to Empower Others and Embrace Their New Normal – Yahoo Finance

Posted: at 12:54 am

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / September 16, 2020 / Jennifer Chapman was living her best life in corporate America. She was working in prominent companies and made lasting relationships with industry leaders. However, upon suffering from a stroke at the age of 34, Jennifer completely pivoted her life. She realigned her priorities to help others who have gone through similar situations.

Jennifer grew up in a family that was full of love, and she had an unrivaled passion for dancing. Needless to say that she had a wonderful childhood. At a young age, Jennifer knew that she wanted to be successful in the corporate landscape. Her biggest support system was her mother. Unfortunately, at 11 years old, she tragically lost her biggest fan. Jennifer had to adapt to a new life with her father and brother as well as her extended family (aunts and grandparents). Eventually, she found her love for tennis, which also helped her cope with her circumstances.

Straight out of college, Jennifer began working in sales. She found herself loving every minute of her ten years spent working in the beer, wine, and spirit industry. Being the risk taker, Jennifer went out of her comfort zone. She transferred to a different industry as a sales representative. "I found success in my first year by hitting President's Club, which was career-changing," Jennifer recalled.

Jennifer lived her life to the fullest when out of the blue, at 34 years old, she suffered a stroke. Her case was alarming because she was in her optimum health. No red flags would have led her to suspect that such a thing would happen. Nonetheless, Jennifer's life changed in an instant. Her situation gave her an epiphany: her mother was also 34 when she passed.

Jennifer went through two weeks of rehabilitation and four months of therapy. She found herself blessed to recover physically, but the emotional burden remained with her. "I had to fully understand how to adapt to, accept and have confidence in my new normal," she said. On her healing process, Jennifer also spent nine months with a life coach that helped her a lot in mending her spirit and self-esteem.

It took a village of caring individuals, especially her life coach, to lead Jennifer to her pivotal transformation. Although she continues to adapt to her situation, Jennifer is filled with love, joy, acceptance, and strength. With the tremendous change in her perspective, Jennifer wants to support other stroke survivors and various individuals who need mentors and life coaches to overcome their challenges.

Hence, Just Commit Coaching was born. The company was built to honor her mother's legacy. Seeing the amount of support she received from a community of individuals and life coaches, Jennifer recalls that they are the reason why she survived. "I work every day to make [my mother] proud through helping others see their value, their purpose, their confidence in their new normal," said Jennifer.

Jennifer believes that everyone has a unique story to tell. They can use their narrative to inspire others to take action. "I have this incredible life experience that is meant to be shared as someone else's hope and healing," said Jennifer. Just Commit Coaching provides a safe space for her clients going through hardships, anxiety, depression, or physical illnesses. Through her company, Jennifer leads people to change their mindset, celebrate even the smallest of successes, and alter their perspective to see the change they need in their lives.
