A contact-tracing app won’t work if people aren’t motivated to use it: AI expert – Montreal Gazette

Posted: September 26, 2020 at 9:50 am

Bengio sounded pessimistic when asked about the chances of Quebec choosing MILAs COVID-19 application.

Its out of my hands, he said. If they want to make a decision, they should send us a sign soon. I think they will take the federal app. From a political point of view, the advantage is that the federal government has already taken the risks with the app. It wouldnt be a controversial decision.

In the meantime, with a second wave of infections now gathering strength, the researcher is bracing for a difficult autumn.

As a citizen, Im worried, he said. I have a mother who is elderly and could easily get the virus. As a society, I think were taking this a little lightly. I see people walking down the street who are not respecting distancing. The discipline we had back in April has pretty much melted down.

Twitter Remembers Placing Random Bets with Universe to Motivate Themselves, Everyone Can Relate – News18

Posted: at 9:50 am

Wishing on a wishing star? | Image credit: YouTube

People find weird ways to self-motivate. Some use the practice of self-rewards while others trust the judgement of the wide and wise universe.

Placing a bet with the universe is something almost everyone does, whether they believe in spirituality or not. Something like, if A happens, then B will happen. Or when you have to make a choice in life, say choosing between subject C and D and you might place a completely arbitrary bet with the universe to make a decision?

If yes, then youre not alone. A number of people on Twitter are finding this tweet about such random bets very relatable.

A user named Shreya asked Tweeple if they ever place random bets with the universe like if I can throw this pen into that drawer Ill get an A on my assignment?

She asked if it was just her who did that.

Turns out, no, she definitely isnt the only one. Soon after her tweet, hundreds of people replied how they felt exactly same. The tweet received over 4,000 likes.

Many reciprocated their own versions.

One user wrote, This is how Ive gotten through every MCQ exam ever, if the person in front of me looks to the right in the next 10 seconds the answer is C. this may not be the best idea for exams but if the universe is on your side, who cares?

Only way I make decisions, if this ball of paper lands in garbage then, I will get increment at work, another response by a user who put all their faith in their aiming skills.

This superstitious user also used the universe bets for clues about exam. Putting the phone on charging then whatever % will be it charged at the time i will see it will be my % in exams. God how stupid I was

Here are some more reactions-

Cant say thats safe but okay.

Those who are rooting for their favorite IPL teams should listen to this advice.

ST. BONAVENTURE Even now, over two months after the official announcement, the reality of its situation still stings.

The St. Bonaventure mens soccer team would have been six games into its 2020 season by this point. It would have been on the cusp of starting an anticipated Atlantic 10 campaign in earnest. At 4 p.m. today, it would have taken its home turf at the Marra Athletics Complex for a game against Little 3 rival Niagara.

Instead, it will enter its second week of full team training, one that might be punctuated with, at most, an intrasquad scrimmage. Instead, mainly, it continues to be patient.

Bona knew by mid-July that it wasnt going to have its regularly-scheduled fall season, that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it would have to wait until the spring of 2021 for its next chance to play for real. And though that news was far more expected than it was for teams last March, making it a bit easier to process, it was still a massive blow.

It still meant no in-season soccer for guys who likely couldnt recall their last fall without it.

IM THINKING about my players, sixth-year Bona coach Kwame Oduro said during a phone interview last Thursday. I want them to have the same experience I had in college, and be good men, be good players, hopefully play after and do whatever they want. So for me, its all about them. In this generation where I think kids are more fragile, when a big change like this happens in your life, its pretty hard on some kids.

And yet, as any number of collegiate and scholastic athletes have, impressively, been willing and made to do, theyve tried their best to maintain a positive outlook in the face of such trying circumstances.

For Oduro and the Bonnies, that means spinning it thusly: Their 2020 campaign now runs a full year rather than just the fall semester.

Two years ago, Bona had only two weeks of preseason practice, and no games, before having to open, on the road, against No. 6 Louisville. Still, it fared well, scoring first and giving the Cardinals everything they could handle before bowing 2-1. Now, given the leagues decision to push the season into next spring, itll have put an entire semesters worth of work in before playing that first contest.

What people dont know is, all these big programs, theyre bringing kids in for summer camps; theyre there months before everyone else is, Oduro noted, and the rule says you can train, you can play, as long as youre doing camp. And so these guys are always ahead of all of us.

So in defense, maybe this catches everybody up. All the small schools like us, maybe we have a chance now to catch up and get our players a little more organized and ready against these big schools.

AS PART of its return-to-play action plan, Bona, as with the schools other athletics programs, has reacclimated in phases.

Initially, players had to quarantine for two weeks before returning to campus and turn in a negative COVID-19 test both prior and upon their arrival. In Phase 2 (after being cleared to begin workouts on Aug. 31), Bona was able to hold non-contact workouts in 10-player pods, which, according to Oduro, was like going back to summer camp, fun stuff, where youre doing things with the ball. Now in Phase 3, which began last week, the Bonnies are back to holding full team workouts with contact, playing and training the way were supposed to, Oduro said.

And so far, hes pleased with his teams progress.

After the first week, it was a little tough, because I think they were just excited to be back back on campus and with a ball, he acknowledged. I think (last week) was excellent. Theyve been going after it, theyre playing like we actually have a game this coming week. So thats awesome.

Looking ahead, he added: The next phase after these couple weeks is hopefully we can scrimmage teams, some friendlies around us if were allowed or able to to play teams (within the region) as a way to keep our guys motivated.

MOTIVATION, at this point, it seems, would be the biggest question mark.

The Bonnies dont have that Niagara game to look forward to today, nor the home coup within their home conference slate: a Saturday, Oct. 10 game under the lights against Duquesne. Without that carrot, and with both the pandemic and uncertainty still very much in the picture, perhaps they dont go quite as hard as they normally might. Maybe, right now, there are as many bad days as there are good.

But that hasnt been the case, Oduro insisted.

Obviously, we thought about that as a staff and were very glad that the motivation hasnt diminished, he said. In the end, youre Division I athletes. This is what they do, this is what theyve been doing their whole life. They want to compete, they want to play. So our job as coaches is to always try to put something in training to make sure theyre motivated.

Starting this week, Bona will stage a once-a-week intrasquad scrimmage, where its up to them to see if they can figure it out tactically, and a prize will be awarded to the winning team. Anything, Oduro said, that will help to keep it hungry.

Its all with the idea of selling to his Bonnies that this campaign has become a marathon rather than an eight-week fall sprint.

If youre a new player coming in, its actually great for you because now you get to be with your teammates, train and understand our principles, how we play and learn that, so that when it is a real game, you have a better understanding, Oduro said. Whereas before, you get two weeks and if you havent figured it out, sorry, its too late, were already in the middle of the season.

Were looking at a full-year season. What we learn now is only going to benefit us in the spring. Maybe thats the best way of doing it. Its a full year, so lets learn, lets play, lets enjoy it now, and then when competition comes, we all know our duties and our roles.

Xis motivations behind LAC standoff and why China has been hyperactive since 2017 – ThePrint

Posted: at 9:50 am

Text Size: A- A+

New Delhi:The changes made by the Narendra Modi government in Kashmir in 2019 and the claim that India was going to grab Aksai Chin may have been the reason behind the Chinese reaction in Ladakh, said ThePrints Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta in episode 574 of Cut The Clutter.

In the episode, Gupta decoded the motivations behind Chinas war-games and dissected the new details that have emerged on the Chinese military build-up along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and how this could be Beijings efforts in carrying out psychological warfare.

Citing a report by US-based think tank Stratfor, Gupta noted that the Chinese, since 2017, have been upgrading their military infrastructure along the entire LAC and not just Ladakh.

This report says that the Chinese probably became hyperactive since the Doklam standoff, even though it happened in 2017.

New Delhi and Beijing were locked in an over-two-month standoff in 2017 in the China, Bhutan and India tri-junction at Doklam.

Also read: India, China say wont send more troops to Ladakh frontlines, agree to avoid misunderstandings

In the past few years, China has focused on improving its logistics along the LAC.

Their investments are also exaggeratedly inclined towards enhancing air power. This was done in two ways they built three new air bases and improved all existing air bases by hardening shelters and making space for more top-of-the-line aircraft.

According to Gupta, this is because it has been believed for a long time and quite rightly, that when it comes to the Tibetan frontier, India has an advantage in the air.

Most of the Chinese air basis are on the Tibetan plateau or Aksai Chin and are quite high already. At that altitude, a high performance aircraft cannot take off and land with their full complement of weaponry. So, there is a warlord penalty for operating those altitudes. Whereas all the Indian airbases are in the plains, he added.

All this infrastructure is being placed because China cannot afford many soldier casualties, argued Gupta. He explained that when a nation moves up on the value chain in terms of per capita income, its ability to accept casualties becomes less.

As a country becomes richer, its ability to take casualties becomes less and China has the additional problem of two generations of single child families, he explained. Therefore, the Indian approach now is inclined to be that the Chinese can be tied down in a war of attrition, which can cost them casualties.

While this is a sound strategy, Gupta cited Lt. Gen. H.S. Panag who argued that close combat on the ground is now pass. It is the twentieth century and the Chinese would like to fight on other planes.

Gupta explained that these Chinese air defence systems are directed towards denying India space within its own airspace.

Also read: 5 maps that tell you all you want to know about India vs China in Ladakh

I am guessing the Chinese motives behind heavy investments in air assets, air defence, helicopters and drones could also be psychological warfare, Gupta noted.

This is also the Chinese approach now because they are looking at a situation where they can achieve some kind of an objective without suffering casualties.

Something to look out for is the plenary of the Chinese Community Party in mid-October where President Xi Jinping has to speak, said Gupta. We will have to guess whether he wants to speak there as somebody whos settled with India and withdrew forces and de-escalated, or he wants to be there as someone who is claiming that he put India in its place.

In order to understand the motivations behind Chinese approach, Gupta warned that one mustacknowledge that the Chinese are notirrational.

One thing we have seen is that the Chinese dont want to combat on ground and want to fight in another dimension. Number two is that the Chinese were not surprised by the Indian response, he said.

They knew how India would react, especially after Doklam, which isnt even in Indian territory.

The Chinese could also be raising the costs of status quo for India. If India wants it borders as they are amid a standoff, they will have to spend money on more equipment, buy more supplies, order more Rafales (fighters). It will upset the defence budget, he said.

It will also make you shift emphasis from your Navy to the Army and divide your forces on a permanent basis between Pakistan and China frontier. So LAC could become the new LoC (Line of Control), Gupta added.

China could also have been upset by the events of 5 August 2019 in Kashmir and Indias activism in Doklam. So, maybe China could be joining hands with Pakistan in one theatre where they can collude and push India into some resolution on Kashmir that India cant sustain.

Another possibility could be to keep India stretched everywhere from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh to Uttarakhand. They could stretch India out, which means really maximise the costs of maintaining the status quo on the borders, Gupta noted.

The Chinese motivations behind raising the status quo for India could be that President Xi Jinping actually wants a border settlement.

Gupta explained, Maybe Jinping actually wants a border settlement. And hes probably saying, look you got used to the status quo for 60 years. I dont think its workable. Let us get together, take a package deal and sort it out.

But at the same time, Jinping wants to come from a position of strength.

6 ways to increase sperm count and improve male fertility – Insider – INSIDER

Posted: at 4:01 pm

Sperm count refers to the amount of sperm per milliliter of semen. Measuring sperm count is usually part of a sperm analysis that also examines the shape of sperm and their motility. All these factors can play a role in a man's fertility.

It only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg, but the higher your sperm count, the better your chances are of impregnating your partner, says Zaher Merhi, MD, OB-GYN and fertility expert at New Hope Fertility Center.

Millions of sperm are in one ejaculation, but only a few hundred will make it to the egg. Many sperm die in the acidic environment of the vagina before they migrate up to the uterus and into the fallopian tubes.

A normal sperm count is between 15 million and 200 million sperm per milliliter of semen. A sperm count less than that could result in difficulties conceiving.

What you eat, how often you exercise, and your overall lifestyle can have an impact on your sperm count. Here are six ways to increase your sperm count and boost your chances of conceiving.

Overweight men tend to have lower sperm counts than those in the normal weight range, Merhi says. This could be due to overheating, which can kill sperm. Excess body fat around the testicles could insulate them, causing them to get warmer.

Hormonal changes in overweight men can also negatively affect sperm production. Overweight men are more likely to have lower testosterone levels and higher estradiol levels, which can negatively impact sperm production.

If you have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher, losing even a small amount of weight can increase your sperm count. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Urology an Iranian publication examined the effects of weight loss on sperm count in 200 men with BMIs over 25. After a six-month intensive exercise program, the researchers observed significant increases in semen volume and sperm concentration among those in the weight loss group compared to the control group.

The function of the reproductive system depends on the general health of the body, so when a man exercises regularly, the testicles function better and sperm count improves, Merhi says.

A 2014 study published in Human Reproduction examined 231 men seeking fertility treatment and their levels of physical activity. The researchers found that weight lifting, running, and jogging, were associated with higher sperm concentrations than other types of exercise like walking and aerobics.

While this study found that some types of exercise are better at improving sperm count than others, any exercise is better than none, says Temeka Zore, MD, OB-GYN, and reproductive endocrinologist at Spring Fertility. Because exercise reduces inflammation, which can improve sperm function.

Some studies have shown that certain types of exercise, like bicycling, could be associated with a reduction in sperm count, but more research is needed to draw definitive conclusions about what types of exercise are best, Zore says.

"Studies are limited and inconclusive on the exact type or amount of exercise that may improve sperm counts," Zore says. "There are no high-quality studies that conclusively state one exercise is better than another."

Smoking can negatively impact sperm count, so quitting can improve your sperm health. According to a 2007 analysis published in Human Reproduction, men who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day experience a 19% reduction in sperm concentration compared to nonsmokers.

The exact reason why smoking reduces sperm count isn't entirely known, but a 2015 review published in the World Journal of Men's Health found that smoking can lead to DNA damage in the sperm, which reduces fertility.

Even if you've smoked for years, stopping will make your sperm healthier, Merhi says. It takes about three months for the testicles to produce fresh sperm, so men who quit at least three months before conception will have healthier sperm and a better chance at fertilizing an egg.

Moderate alcohol consumption, which is about two drinks a day for men, doesn't appear to have an adverse effect on sperm count, Merhi says. However, some studies suggest that heavy drinking, defined as 14 drinks or more a week, can reduce sperm quality and lower testosterone production.

Other drugs like opioids or marijuana can also negatively impact fertility. More research is needed to see if stopping substance abuse reverses the adverse effect it has on sperm health. But, in general, abstaining from substance use and developing healthy habits can improve your sperm count and fertility.

"If you are trying to conceive, we always recommend being the healthiest version of yourself, which means avoiding smoking and drugs and drinking alcohol in moderation if you choose to drink," Zore says.

D-aspartic acid (D-AA) is an amino acid that aids in the formation of proteins in the body. It is found in high concentrations in the endocrine glands, such as the ovary and testes. Because sperm, like any cell in the body, contains protein, D-AA is important for sperm function, Merhi says.

Low concentrations of D-AA can contribute to lower sperm count and motility, so taking a D-AA supplement might help, Merhi says. A 2012 study published in Advances in Sexual Medicine examined 60 men with fertility problems and found that taking D-AA supplements for three months substantially increased their sperm counts and sperm motility.

It is important to note that those in the study were not healthy individuals as they already had sperm disorders. Therefore, there is no conclusive evidence that D-AA supplements would increase sperm count in healthy individuals.

D-AA supplements can be purchased online and the dose is usually 2,000 to 3,000 mg taken daily, but you should consult with your doctor before taking any supplements, Merhi says. D-AA can cause irritability and headaches if you take the wrong dose, and its long term effects are not yet known.

What you eat also affects your sperm count and overall health. Antioxidants in particular may improve fertility, Merhi says. Vitamin E and C have been shown to be good antioxidants for sperm function.

A 2006 study published in the Journal of Medicinal food examined 13 men with fertility problems between the ages of 25 and 35. The men received 1,000mg of vitamin C supplements twice a day for two months. Their sperm count increased by more than 100% and their sperm mobility by 92%.

Foods rich in Vitamin C include:

Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to improve sperm function, Zore says. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids our bodies cannot produce on their own, so we must consume them in our diets. Fatty acids are part of the sperm cell membrane, so adequate consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may improve sperm count and motility.

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include:

Many factors can affect sperm count. Luckily, there are steps you can take that may increase your sperm count and boost your chances of conceiving. Exercising, eating well, and quitting smoking are all lifestyle changes you can make to improve your fertility and your overall health.

For all types, if you're struggling to lose weight, I often recommend omitting both gluten and dairy, as these foods can be inflammatory.

Anti-inflammatory foods are also important for promoting hormone balance and digestive function, especially for Warriors, Anchors, and Trailblazers. Begin by omitting sensitivities and incorporating more anti-inflammatory foods and spices, such as turmeric, ginger, blueberries, pineapple, and celery.

Protein is key for Anchors to support adrenal function, while Protector types may want to limit their intake of red meat in favor of more easily digested proteins.

You'll want to omit sugar, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol if you're a type who struggles with Candida overgrowth, most commonly Anchors and Protectors. This type of yeast overgrowth can cause bloating, fatigue, joint pain, and weight gainbut it's often a latent infection overlooked at most doctors' visits.
