CMU encourages students to participate in survey on engagement, learning
Posted: at 5:21 am
Central Michigan University freshmen and seniors are invited to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement.
NSSE, founded by Indiana University, collects information about student participation, learning and personal development to provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college.
On Feb. 1, Provost Gary Shapiro emailed students asking them to complete the survey, which covers five National Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice; level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interactions, enriching educational experiences and supportive campus environment.
Each benchmark measures student engagement and its importance to student learning, collegiate quality and institutional improvement.
OIR Senior Research Associate Ahmed Elgammal is working to raise awareness of the survey and its significance around campus.
“More than 640 institutions nationwide are participating in the survey,” Elgammal said. “Some Canadian institutions and American universities overseas are taking part too.”
He has helped spread advertising around campus, spoke to resident assistants and will continue to remind students of the survey through email.
So far, about 1,000 CMU students have taken the survey, Elgammal said. But CMU wants to see more students respond.
“It’s very important to get students’ feedback and engagement,” Elgammal said. “It helps increase the student-learning experience.”
Students who complete the survey by March 21 will be entered into a drawing for more than 100 prize,s including items such as an iPad 2 or a CMU Bookstore gift card.
In 2009, about 1.1 million students from 640 institutions in the U.S. and Canada were invited to participate in the survey. Of that number, 367,318 students responded. This year NSSE hopes more students get involved.
The survey closes in May.

SuperScholar.org Publishes First Annual Smart Choice Ranking of Schools for Online Nursing Degrees
Posted: at 5:19 am
SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Online education and career information website SuperScholar published its first annual "Smart Choice" ranking of the top 25 schools for online nursing degrees. The ranking can be found at http://www.superscholar.org/rankings/online/best-nursing-schools/.
SuperScholar editors developed the Smart Choice ranking as a tool to help prospective students make a smart choice about where to invest in their education. The ranking helps fill a void in quality, unbiased rankings and reviews of online nursing schools. In order to be considered for inclusion in the ranking, an institution had to be a regionally accredited college or university listed in the National Center for Education Statistics database and offer an online nursing degree program accredited by either the CCNE or NLNAC. The nursing schools that met this initial accreditation criterion were then evaluated based on reputation and prestige, program quality, student satisfaction and cost. The result is a ranking of online nursing schools that offers prospective students a helpful tool for making a smart choice about where to earn an online nursing degree.
The University of Illinois at Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, earned the honor of the top Smart Choice school for an online nursing degree. Other ranked schools include (in alphabetical order):
Anna Maria College Benedictine University Chamberlain College of Nursing Clarkson College Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions Georgetown University Department of Nursing Gonzaga University Department of Nursing Grand Canyon University Indiana State University College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services Kent State College of Nursing Liberty University Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing Nebraska Methodist College or Nursing and Allied Health Robert Morris University (PA) Sacred Heart University Department of Nursing Saint Peter's College Saint Xavier University The George Washington University School of Nursing University of Cincinnati College of Nursing University of Colorado Denver University of Saint Mary Vanderbilt University School of Nursing Walden University Western Governors University

Latest Statistics Reveal Interesting Shift in Online Education Trends
Posted: at 5:19 am
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., Feb. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- PETAP, LLC (www.petap.org) has discovered recent reports on the subject of online education showing that not only are more students taking advantage of classes offered via the internet, but that the opinions of teachers and administrators regarding online education are changing as well.
According to a report entitled "Going the Distance - Online Education in the United States, 2011" published by the College Board and the Babson Survey Research Group, over 6 million students are currently taking at least one class online. This number indicates that almost one-third of higher-education students in the U.S. are now taking at least one course over the internet, over 560,000 more than in 2010.
The report data also demonstrates a significant shift in the way teachers and school administrators feel about online programs. In 2011, 67% of academic professionals polled were of the opinion that online classes can be equally as effective as face-to-face classes. In 2003, only 50% responded this way. Therefore, as more institutions are offering classes online, those working in the industry are becoming more open to the idea. While two-thirds of educators believe online education is a worthwhile pursuit, only one-third believe otherwise and many of them work in institutions that do not offer online learning options.
It is important to note that many of these educators teach curriculums that are not conducive to online studies. Chemistry and art for example often require physical interaction from students, making it difficult for these subjects to be taught online effectively. Others, however, such as business administration, lend themselves to the platform of online education because of how crucial online interaction is in today's business world. Subsequently business administration is commonly one the most popular online degree programs pursued, along with online degrees in nursing and online criminal justice degrees.
There are several factors believed to have an effect on the overall shift in the mentality of educators. However, the most common is the technological capabilities now available to teachers and students, making it possible to achieve a highly interactive, educational experience, much like they could in a traditional classroom. The computers, tablets, and smartphones available, along with the ever-evolving software capabilities and network options, make online degree opportunities too convenient to ignore.
The statistics prove that perceptions regarding online education are beginning to shift, including those of educators, along with the fact that new online degree programs are popping up all over the place. Degree programs can be found in virtually every area of study, and PETAP.org makes it easier than ever to read about available programs and make a truly educated decision.
