German artist thrills guest at interactive live performance in Accra

Local and foreign guests at a live art performance and documentary were inebriated by a German performance artist with Turkish root in Accra, who uses her creative sense abilities to mix cooking scenes with people's personal life stories.
Nezaket Ekici, the artist, currently touring five continents in the world for her interactive performance and documentary films, chose Ghana as her destination to represent the African continent for her classic project dubbed: "Five Senses in Ghana".
The Goethe Institute, a cultural Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with global reach in Accra, facilitated Ekici's choice of Ghana for the project.
In the "Five Senses in Ghana" documentary, an event to sensually experience the Ghanaian culture filmed in Accra, Twifo Praso and Cape Coast, Ekici shows different people cooking their favourite dishes, where she also mixes in the film with scenes of her video performances of using and playing with cooking ingredients that people cook in the video.
"Ghana is my fourth continent. I have done the same Five Senses in Brazil, South America; in Turkey, Europe; and in Vietnam, Asia. My final continent will be Australia after which I will bring all the collections together to be presented in German," Ekici told the Ghana News Agency at the Institute on Thursday during the live performance.
"I go to countries I don't know the people and I am curious in the way they cook their traditional meals and then learn a little about their lives and finally I bring these people together and invite people to come to learn, cook themselves and eat,"
Known for her dynamic and culturally atmospheric art performances, Ekici believes as an artist it is always important to go to different countries and places to see cultures and get inspiration and to learn something new.
"This is a beautiful world and because of that I have the possibility to see people in their houses, who opened their doors to me. If I come into Ghana as a tourist, I would never have this great opportunity in just ten days."

Proponents of gay marriage, who traditionally frame the cause as a matter of equality and civil rights, are increasingly invoking something else: family. And the tactic seems to be working.
In February three state legislatures passed statutes making gay marriage legal, and in each case the appeal to family connections was a central feature.
"We need to ask ourselves: How would it feel to be a child of a gay couple?" asked Washington's Democratic governor, Chris Gregoire, who signed the state's legislation Feb. 13 after having announced her support for it a month earlier. "How can we tell these children that their parents' love is seen as unequal under Washington law?"
A Washington state lawmaker who voted for the bill recalled her own marriage. "I was married for 23 years to the love of my life and he died six years ago," said Republican Rep. Maureen Walsh in a video that went viral. "How could I deny anyone the right to have that incredible bond with another individual in life?"
In New Jersey, 15-year-old Madison Galluccio told state lawmakers debating same-sex marriage what it's like being the adopted daughter of two gay dads.
"A lot of people think that my family is different," she testified before an Assembly committee. "You gave us a civil union. I don't know what that is.... It's very hard for me to explain to my friends. It's very hard that I can't tell them, 'Oh yeah, I have gay dads and they're married just like your parents.' But they're not."
Almost two weeks later, New Jersey lawmakers passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, but it was swiftly vetoed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie, who wants the issue decided by referendum.
In Maryland, where Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley signed its bill into law Thursday, a Republican lawmaker had a change of heart over gay marriage after coming face to face with couples sharing their stories.
Wade Kach, left scrambling for a seat in a packed committee hearing last month, found a spot near the witness table.
"I saw with so many of the gay couples, they were so devoted to one another. I saw so much love," said Kach, a member of the House of Delegates. "When this hearing was over, I was a changed person in regard to this issue."

Pilotless turbojet plane flown by Taiwan university students

Students from Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University in Tainan flew a pilotless aircraft powered by a turbojet engine Thursday.
The school said this could lead to the ground-breaking development of personal flying vehicles, according to a report by Taiwan's Central News Agency.
During Thursday's trial flight, the 7.5-kilo turbojet aircraft was able to carry items weighing nine kilos - and travel at 150 kph, the report said.
Lai Wei-hsiang, professor of the southern school's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering, said the plane named the "Sky Fortress-III" was the first university project in the world to combine a turbojet engine with a pilotless plane.
The department has been devoted to the development of pilotless planes for more than 10 years. Previous pilotless vehicles built by the university were all powered by propellers.
A research team led by Lai estimated "Sky Fortress-III," over 3 meters in length and with a wingspan of three meters, could carry up to 20 kilos.
It also has the potential to reach a speed of 300 kph.
Lai said weight capacity and speed were the main focuses of pilotless plane development.
Also, Lai said the new planes could even be equipped with other technologies, like sensor devices or photography equipment, to detect and monitor a typhoon's course and internal structure. TJD, GMA News
