The Adult Education Department at Northeast Texas Community College announced a new online General Education Development (GED) program. Classes are free and begin March 19.
In order to participate in this program, students must have reliable access to the Internet (preferably high speed) and meet eligibility requirements. While the majority of the program is completed online, 12 direct contact hours are required.
"We are happy to be able to offer GED classes online. This is a great opportunity for motivated, computer-savvy students to get their GED on their own schedule," said Sue Barker, director of the Adult Education Department.
Students interested in this program must attend an orientation session at the Mount Pleasant Adult Community Education Center at 201 N. Gibson (located behind the Child Development Center). To register, or for more information, contact Amy House at 903-575-2130 or Freda Duncan at 903-434-8639.
According to Ms. Barker, the online GED may not be the best option for all students. Traditional face-to-face classes are also offered free of charge at various locations throughout the area. Call Ms. Duncan at 903-434-8639 to learn more about these as well.

Education is truly an important element not only in an individuals life but in his or her part as a member of the community and the country. This message still lingers on up to this day. Thanks to the internet and sites like Learnstream.com, education will continue to be accessible to the public.

Water aerobics class holds annual spring potluck lunch
Posted: March 15, 2012 at 9:08 pm
After the water aerobics class concluded on Wednesday, everyone enjoyed plates full of food at the annual spring potluck lunch.
Everyone brought a side dish, which filled an entire table, as hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs were cooked on the grill for everyone to enjoy.
The picnic tables, lounge chairs and anywhere else someone could grab a seat were full at the pool Wednesday as individuals socialized and caught up on each other's lives.
Sheelagh Knapp started attending water aerobic classes seven years ago at the Pine Island pool. She said she still attends as often as she can every week.
"It makes me feel good," Knapp said smiling.
She said the water aerobic class is good for her health and it has increased her strength.
Over the years, she has formed friendships with the other women who also attend the class, which is held every day Tuesday through Saturday. Knapp said the class is a good environment with a lot of nice people.
"We have gotten to know each other and we look out for each other," she said.
Another long-time attendee is Barbara Stepien. She has participated in the class for the past four seasons while she is here during the winter months.
"It is one big happy family," Stepien said about those who attend the class.

Aerobics may ease menopause symptoms: study
Posted: at 9:08 pm
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In a small study of Finnish women who had recently entered menopause, those who stuck to an aerobic exercise program for six months were less likely to report night sweats, mood swings and irritability than women who didn't exercise.
The study's authors say their results suggest exercise could serve as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy for quelling bothersome menopause symptoms.
"I would definitely recommend physical activity. I think that among all the options out there that it's probably the best thing for health and also symptoms of aging," said Steriani Elavsky, a professor at Penn State University, who was not involved in the new research.
In the years just after a woman reaches menopause, up to 80 percent may experience some or all of the most typical symptoms, including hot flashes and night sweats, sleep disturbances, headache, depression, irritability, urinary problems and vaginal dryness.
Estrogen-based therapy can ease those symptoms, but concerns about health risks associated with the hormones have led many women and their physicians to shy away from that treatment.
Though not all studies have agreed, some earlier work has shown that exercise can help as well.
Dr. Riitta Luoto at the UKK Institute for Health Promotion Research in Tampere, Finland, and her colleagues found in a previous study that exercise helped to reduce the number of hot flashes women experienced.
In the latest study, published in the journal Menopause, the same team looked at other symptoms of menopause.
The researchers randomly assigned 74 recently menopausal women aged 45 to 63, all of whom were experiencing symptoms, to exercise 50 minutes a day, four days a week for 24 weeks. A comparison group of 77 women attended health lectures instead.
For the exercise group, at least two of the sessions each week had to involve walking, while the other two could include walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, aerobics or other activities.
