Mercer Launches “My Retirement Workshop” Online Education Program

Posted: May 15, 2012 at 9:10 pm

NORWOOD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Mercer, a leading global provider of benefits administration, announced today that it has launched My Retirement Workshop, (www.myretirementworkshop.com) an online retirement planning and education campaign for employees whose 401(k) plans it administers. Thematically styled after todays many popular home improvement programs, the innovative website provides interactive tools and hands-on instruction to help investors fix up their retirement plans.

My Retirement Workshop addresses key findings from the 2011 Mercer Workplace Survey, which revealed that employees are feeling more personally accountable for their own retirement. In fact, despite having a broadly negative economic outlook, more employees than in past years reported stepping up their retirement planning activity, including increasing their 401(k) contributions and reallocating their portfolios.

Typically, weve found that a pessimistic economic outlook among 401(k) participants leads them to ignore and often retreat from retirement planning, said Dave Tolve, Retirement Business Leader for Mercers US Outsourcing business. With our most recent survey results, however, we saw the opposite employees seemed to be more motivated to make positive changes and take on more personal responsibility for their future financial security. My Retirement Workshop was designed to respond to this shift in attitude with helpful, action-oriented content that will give participants the tools to continuously improve their chances of a successful retirement.

My Retirement Workshop consists of four main features: a brief self-assessment tool that provides personalized feedback and a recommended action plan; a selection of hands-on projects that address common retirement planning challenges; a toolbox of helpful calculators, worksheets and widgets; and an opportunity to learn from the pros by watching videos, listening to podcasts and/or reading articles. Visitors to the site can also interact with peers through discussion boards, quick polls and share the site through various social media websites. The My Retirement Workshop online education campaign was launched in early May and will be a year-long campaign, with new content and features to be introduced in the fall.

Participants can access My Retirement Workshop through their plans website. A public version of the site is also available at http://www.myretirementworkshop.com, where mobile device users also can access a mobile-optimized variation of the site for easy viewing.

Mercers US Outsourcing business administers the defined contribution retirement programs for 1.3 million participants.

Ariz. Gov. Brewer Vetoes Online Education Bill

Posted: at 9:10 pm

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a bill which would have made broad changes to the state's online education system, officials say.

Senate Bill 1259 would have made it easier for junior and high school students to take online courses from a "master list" of courses approved by the state. Any online class currently offered would be automatically added to the list, but starting in 2019, courses would need to be submitted to the state for approval, The Arizona Republic reported.

The bill also would have required supervision for final exams to prevent cheating.

Brewer expressed concerns that it might be inappropriate for the state "or an entity on behalf of the state approving online courses or curriculum," in a letter accompanying her veto Monday.

In response to a provision would have provided schools with more state funding per student if the student mastered a subject, Brewer said: "I strongly support moving forward toward funding outcomes; however [the Arizona Department of Education] may not be able to implement the systems properly, at least as the bill is drafted."

Online K-12 education is becoming more popular across the country, with the number of students in Arizona online schools reaching nearly 37,000 in the 2010-2011 school year, almost tripling over the last six years, The Arizona Republic reported.

As online education becomes more widespread, so have concerns regarding the quality of the classes. In an investigative series, The Republic found there to be relatively lax oversight and ample opportunities for cheating.

Towson University Partners With Learning House to Offer Professional Certification Classes Online

Posted: at 9:10 pm

LOUISVILLE, KY--(Marketwire -05/15/12)- The Learning House, Inc., an online education solutions partner that helps colleges and universities develop and grow high-quality online degree programs and courses, announced today that Towson University's Center for Professional Studies (CPS) has selected Learning House to help expand its online continuing education course offerings. CPS offers programs that focus on meeting identified workforce shortages for the region and address skill gaps and career advancement needs.

Towson University has a robust set of existing continuing education programs, but CPS identified a need to develop self-paced, industry-driven, professional certification programs that leverage the expertise of the University's faculty.

"We wanted to develop our own courses and truly control the content, deployment and quality of the curriculum," said Jeff Beeson, Director of the Center for Professional Studies at Towson University. "We selected Learning House because they represented what we needed -- a partner that could help us turn classroom curriculum into dynamic online courses that engage non-campus-based learners. Their dedicated team approach is a plus because we feel very supported. Additionally, the assurance that Learning House can help with all our online education needs from course design and development to marketing, as well as provide IT and tech support is a true value add."

Together, Learning House and CPS will create workforce and professional certification courses online that align with Towson's core academic mission of business, IT and the health professions. The first courses will include a project management professional (PMP) certification course, an A+/Net+ certification course and a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) course with a health information supplement. All of these courses will directly address workforce needs in Maryland.

"Developing online courses takes a deep understanding of both the subject matter and the technology. A big mistake institutions often make is simply taking existing curricula and posting it online using a simple learning management system. Towson University's CPS team understands that reaching online learners takes something more, and we are excited to work with them to expand their professional certification courses," said Dr. David Clinefelter, Chief Academic Officer at Learning House. "Having the involvement of faculty is critical to the way we develop online courses. We plan to work closely with the faculty at Towson University to ensure they have the support they want to build engaging courses and the professional development they need to help their students achieve success."

Learning House collaborates with schools that have various levels of online education experience to achieve each institution's unique goals and create a positive student experience. For more information about how Learning House works with institutions to achieve their online education goals, visit http://www.learninghouse.com.

Gov. Brewer vetoes bill making changes to online education

Posted: at 9:10 pm

by Anne Ryman - May. 14, 2012 09:50 PM The Republic | azcentral.com

Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed a bill that would have enacted sweeping changes to the state's online-education system.

The legislation would have made it easier for Arizona junior- and high-school students to take online courses, which likely would have pushed further growth in the system. The bill also would have boosted accountability by creating a master list of approved courses and a state ranking and evaluation of each course.

In addition, Senate Bill 1259 would have required students to take final exams in online classes in the presence of another person to help prevent cheating.

In a letter accompanying her veto, Brewer said she was concerned about the appropriateness of the state "or an entity on behalf of the state approving online courses or curriculum."

She also cited a provision that would have paid online schools more state funding per student if the student mastered a course. "I strongly support moving toward funding outcomes; however, ADE (the Arizona Department of Education) may not be able to implement the systems properly, at least as the bill is drafted."

Brewer added that she believes online learning will become more common, and she looks forward to working with the bill's sponsor to improve high school students' access to quality online learning.

Sen. Rich Crandall, R-Mesa, who sponsored the legislation, was traveling on Monday and unavailable for comment, his office said. In a previous interview, Crandall said the legislation would do three things: provide students with more access to online courses, set a quality bar, and establish an evaluation process for the quality and effectiveness.

"Those are three things that really make a difference," said Crandall, who is chairman of the Senate Education Committee.

Some educators said that while the legislation provided some significant regulatory changes, it also had some big holes, including weak test-proctoring requirements and an exemption for schools that only enroll full-time students.

ACTIVITIES

Getting into an exercise regimen doesn't necessarily mean you have to sign up for a gym membership or pay for a class, here are some activities you can do on your own time without spending a dime.

l Get some exercise and socialize with friends while you walk the entire mall.

l Get your garden or yard in shape, and you'll shape up, too.

l Make your own weights from household items -- plastic milk jugs filled with sand or water, bags of rice, soup cans or bottles of water.

l Rather than driving, walk when doing errands.

l Join in a coastal cleanup, or do one of your own with family and friends

l Put your dancing shoes on and cha-cha the night away at the Chamorro Village's main pavilion on Wednesdays during the night market
