AFM trainers complete training of hundreds of Somali soldiers in Uganda

Ready for duty: Hundreds of Somali recruits have completed an extensive military training programme under the auspices of the EU
Karl Stagno-Navarra
A three-man team of Armed Forces military trainers have completed a lengthy training excercise of hundreds of Somali solidiers in Bihanga, Uganda, under the auspicies of the European Union.
An estimated 3,000 recruits are expected to have been trained by the AFM, together with trainers from Spain, Germany and Sweden.
African news agencies reported that hundreds of brand-new bayonets tied to automatic rifles, were held by army recruits during the passing out parade.
"We have trained four companies of the Somali army," says Irishman Michael Beary, the commander of the training force. "We do not only train the soldiers, but also the commanders. Together they will be a serious force that will make Somalia's fourth division the most effective one in their army."
The training programme cost 11 million.
But there are reports of Somali recruits who, after training sessions, defect from the national army to join al-Shabaab.
Somalia's Western-backed interim government is unstable, holding only a few areas in Mogadishu, as they continue to fight a revolt by al-Shabaab.
The Islamist militants recently merged with Al-Qaeda and are said to harbour dozens of Western sympathisers (thus posing a threat to Western security).

Yoga delivers calm to mothers-to-be

Prenatal yoga instructor Letty Shaw demonstrates techniques that women can do during their pregnancy at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, Kan. (Colleen Lefholz, The Hutchinson News/Associated Press)
Katie Burge is more at ease during this pregnancy.
Her muscles are relaxed, and every time she has a cramp, she knows how to work it out. She expects to have her baby in about four weeks.
Burge, who already has two children, attributes the calmness to a prenatal yoga class at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Kansas.
"I've never done anything like it before," said Burge, of Lyons.
The 12-week program, which started in March, is the last project in instructor Letty Shaw's yoga training. Shaw's goal is to learn enough during this pilot program to teach other yoga instructors how to teach prenatal yoga.
"A lot of ladies can benefit from prenatal yoga," Shaw said. "There's no reason to hurt and suffer if there's something that can be fixed while not taking drugs or other things that are harmful to your body."
Shaw was in the midst of her initial yoga training about four years ago when she became pregnant with her third child. Before, she had problems with sciatica pain from a nerve that goes down the leg and lower back pain.
With yoga training, she never had a problem.
"I didn't hurt at all with my third child," she said. "I thought yoga was amazing. Everyone needs to know about it."

Yoga ideal activity for tweens
Posted: at 1:12 am
Question: Your tween daughter is begging to take a weekly yoga class with her friends. Should you steer her toward a sport instead?
Answer: Adolescence is actually a prime time for yoga, says Paula Walker, yoga instructor at Miami-based Green Monkey yoga studios, which partners with schools to offer children's yoga classes.
"Self-confidence, self-esteem and self-respect are the three most important things for preteen girls to develop as their bodies are changing," Walker says. "Yoga teaches them to become very in touch with their bodies from the inside out."
The breathing techniques, spiritual teachings and mindfulness meditations that accompany the stretches and other physically taxing parts of yoga classes can give tweens the tools they need to navigate any number of stressful situations.
"It teaches you to calm down your nervous system," Walker says. "You learn to calm down your anxiety and panic modes so when you're 13 and you're facing a big test or pressure from the outside world, you can control your breathing and think more clearly."
A few other benefits for tweens, Walker says:
Nutrition awareness: "Yoga becomes a lifestyle that permeates the rest of your life. So when you leave yoga, you're not going to want to go eat at McDonald's. You start to choose all kinds of healthier ways to live."
Connectedness: "It builds a sense of belonging and community with the other people in your class. And preteens can take adult classes, so it's something that moms and daughters and sisters can all do together."
Crossover: "Yoga makes you more flexible and strengthens your core. So if you do ballet or gymnastics, it's a great add-on. If you swim, if you do any other sport, it's going to elevate your skill set."
Posture: "It makes you sit up straighter and roll your shoulder blades back and just be more mindful of your posture." Just in time for prom photos.
