Yoga and meditation have become increasingly popular over the last few years. People of all ages have taken up these hobbies for various reasons.

Yoga is a combination of stretching, calisthenics, and breathing exercises that works muscles and can reduce stress. Meditation focuses on mental strength and sharpness along with breathing exercises.

While they are two different activities, meditation is commonly used in yoga.

According to Yoga Basics, a website dedicated to yoga, yoga was developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago.

Today, yoga classes and teaches can be found everywhere, and most likely with a waiting list. It has become so popular that there are unique classes with animals, partners, and children.

According to the Harvard Medical School, Hatha is one of the most popular styles [of yoga today]. Hatha yoga focuses on pranayamas breath-controlling exercises followed by a series of asanas yoga postures and ends with savasana a resting period.

Asanas include poses like downward dog, locust, and bridge. By holding your body in these positions for a set amount of time, it strengthens muscles and improves physical balance.

When holding yoga poses, it is recommended to focus on breathing and attempt to relax your body as much as possible. This is where yoga meets meditation.

The Harvard Medical School also said that yoga has been proven to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar along with losing weight.

I began doing yoga during quarantine because I was bored, but now I do it almost every day, said sophomore womens volleyball player Courtney Maxwell. It really does reduce my anxiety and make me feel refreshed.

Anyone can pick up yoga, all that is required is some open space and a yoga mat. There are plenty of online videos and apps to help newbies get started.

Meditation does not require any equipment, but a brain and some time. It is best known for reducing stress in daily life and continuously keeping people positive.

Meditation can last for as little as five minutes or as long as hours. A person is required to sit still, close their eyes, and control their thoughts.

According to Healthline, meditation can also enhance self-awareness, lengthen attention spans, reduce age-related memory loss, potential fight addictions, and improve sleep.

Also according to Healthline, there is focused-attention meditation, which is a concentration on a single object, thought, sound, or visualization, and open-monitoring meditation, which encourages focusing on self-awareness of personal thoughts, feelings, or impulses.

Both yoga and meditation are easy to incorporate into daily lives. It is completely up to you how much time and energy is put into these new hobbies.

They are also easy to begin. There is no need for background information or amazing athletic ability; both hobbies were created to better yourself at your own pace and level.

By including meditation and yoga in a daily routine, a person will see positive results in both their physical and mental state.

Visualization

Arguably the most expansive technique on this list, visualization is only limited by your own imagination. Training your mind to focus on pleasant imagery helps you to actively move away from negative thoughts and emotions, inducing a feeling of tranquillity, and significantly enhancing your overall mental well-being.

4-7-8 breathing

Also known as Ratio Breathing, it is one of the many different rhythmic techniques that help put your mind and body in a relaxed state. The basic concept involves inhaling through the nose as you count to 4, and then to 7 and then exhaling as you count to 8.

Mindhouse recommends starting off with 4 cycles of this pattern and slowly working your way up to 8.

Yoga positions

There are various restorative yoga postures that help relieve stress, such as the reclining bound angle, the wide knee childs pose, and the reclining hero pose, which can set you up for a good nights sleep. They help diffuse tension thats accumulated in various parts of the body, such as the hips and hamstrings, and help to improve blood circulation in your feet.

Finding My Focus in the World of Virtual Yoga – The Connecticut College Voice

It seems that yoga has become a trend in the time of COVID-19. While the low cost and convenience of at-home yoga has certainly contributed to its rise in popularity, perhaps the most important thing that the practice can do for us in this day and age is relieve stress. Its no secret that COVID-19 is as much an infodemic as it is a pandemic, which is why anxiety has become so prevalent in our day-to-day lives. Yoga can help us cope with the concerns, uncertainty, and poor mental health that so many are experiencing as a result of the pandemic.

I am just one of many individuals around the world who began to gravitate towards yoga during quarantine. Practicing first thing in the morning became an essential part of my daily new routine. At first, it was simply a way to move my body before breakfast. But I slowly realized that I was feeling better on the inside, too. The mindfulness which I cultivated helped me cope with the sadness I felt over the abrupt end to my senior year of high school, as well as the uncertainty that I felt about transitioning to college.

When I arrived at Conn, I was thrilled to see virtual yoga class offerings during orientation, and I continue to be impressed with the quantity of these offerings. It shows that the College is committed to helping students maintain their physical and mental health during these challenging times. There are, however, drawbacks to virtual yoga. For me, the added layer of technology, which is prone to malfunction, takes away some degree of the peace that I seek when I practice yoga. Additionally, I find that attempts to maintain some sense of a yoga community online just doesnt beat the feeling of personal connection that I get at an in-person yoga class.

When I logged in to Zoom for a class from the Find Your Focus Yoga Series on a particular cloudy Friday evening, each of these drawbacks was evident to me. I was the only student in the class, and while it was nice to receive individualized feedback on my form, I felt that I had to remain 100 percent plugged in and engaged with the instructor. The practice felt performative, which made it difficult to fully relax and tend to the wellness of my mind and body. In addition, that flawed technology piece was certainly at play as the instructor and I had difficulty communicating during the class. Yoga is meant to be a fluid experience, but the numerous interruptions in internet connection made that flow nearly impossible.

That said, this virtual yoga class was not a total bust. By some stroke of luck, the connection remained stable during the last few minutes, which are always my favorite. It is in these last few minutes that yoga instructors usually share a take-home message, a snippet of wisdom which the students can carry with them long after their physical practice. In this particular class, the instructor touched on the idea of fluidity between poses, remarking that its all about whats inside the sandwich. Yoga is about connection: that of your hands and feet to the ground, your mind, body, and spirit, your being to those around you and your greater purpose in life. The instructor reminded me to be kind to myself, that I dont have to work that hard, and that the more I focus on the external, the more I burn away whats inside.

What you get out of participating in this yoga series will be different for each person. Though I did not enjoy the technology issues and lack of fellow student participation, I can say that the class certainly contributed to the maintenance of my own wellbeing in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. It allowed me to move my body and leave with some food-for-thought. I remain pleased that Conn makes these small efforts to help students remain physically and mentally healthy during this unprecedented semester. I believe that these opportunities have the potential to positively impact individual students and the campus as a whole.

In closing, I want to share with my fellow yogis my love for Adriene Mishler of Yoga with Adriene. If you are a part of the yoga community, youve probably stumbled across her YouTube channel. Here, you can find a variety of pre-filmed home yoga classes, complete with regular appearances by her dog, Benji. Adreines videos launched me into my personal yoga journey back in March, and I havent looked back. I fell in love with her find what feels good approach through a 30 day yoga challengeof which she has posted manyand continue to practice with her almost daily. If you, too, find yourself discouraged by the lack of community and technological interruptions that are prevalent among virtual yoga classes, I highly recommend Adriene. She manages to do away with the complications while fostering an unbelievably strong yoga community. I always leave her classes with a happy body and a happy mind, which, these days, can be hard to come by, but are nevertheless important.

Southeast athletes participate in Mental Health Awareness week with yoga – The Arrow

Southeast Missouri States Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted an athlete-wide slow flow yoga for Mental Health Awareness week Thursday, Oct. 8, at Houck Field.

Mental Health Awareness Week was established in 1990 in an effort to increase awareness about mental health issues. The week of awareness starts Oct. 4 and ends Oct. 10.

Southeasts SAAC President and the Redhawks Ohio Valley Conference Representative Anna Griffin had the idea after speaking with other SAAC representatives across the conference.

Our main goal was to get athletes to feel like they could put their bodies and mental well-being first, Griffin said. Those two are one and the same.

Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development Jeremiah Streeter said SAAC brought the importance of Mental Health Awareness Week to him.

Streeter said, All the athletes are overly worked with classes and practice that sometimes they need meditation moments to help them rejuvenate. I am really looking forward to all student athletes releasing their stress.

Southeast professor Annette Slattery led the yoga instruction on Thursday at Houck Field. Slattery has been involved with yoga for 12 years. After realizing she needed the relaxation in her life, she began instructing yoga classes here at Southeast. Slattery also teaches two evening classes at Fitness Plus in Cape Girardeau.

Slattery believes yoga is beneficial in many ways and also helps you forget about your worries for a period of time.

It makes you focus on the present moment. It takes you back to your breathing, Slattery said. We breathe so shallow throughout most of our daily activities, and we dont realize that we have the most powerful tool within our control in our bodies every moment of the day.

Slattery said she has her Southeast students write to her, and they have stated how different they started to feel after her yoga classes.

[They said] how different they started feeling and how they want to smile at everybody when they leave, Slattery said.

Slattery said yoga is a fine addition to physical fitness that we as people forget about sometimes.

Its not just physical its mental and can be spiritual, Slattery said.

Griffin hopes to be able to continue the weekly yoga meetings with athletes, and she believes the first meeting was beneficial for the athletes who attended.

Anyone who says that yoga is an easy, breezy workout has never attempted a headstand. There are countless advanced, twisty or upside-down poses in yoga that can make stepping onto the mat as much of a challenge as a HIIT class. Out of all of them, inversions can be some of the toughest to nailbut Nike master trainer Traci Copeland is here to give you the intel on how to do a headstand on your own.

In this weeks episode of The Right WayWell+Goods YouTube series that breaks down workout moves so that you do them correctlyCopeland details the foundational steps that lead you to the perfect headstand. The most important thing to remember when attempting the pose? Whenever you get into a headstand, it should never feel forced, she says. It should feel like youre naturally getting upside down with ease and control just like with every other yoga pose that you do.

If youre a yogi whos always shied away from headstands because its just never happened for you, know that you can build up the strength (and hey, a least its not a handstand). Once you start working on proper form, youll be able to reap the unique benefits of getting upside down. Because, inversions dont just look coolposes like headstands and legs up the wall can give your brain a boost. Peloton instructor Ross Rayburn previously told Well+Good that inversions can help with brain fog, so that afternoon slump is all the more reason to turn things upside down.

Oftentimes, Copeland sees people flare their elbows out to the sides when attempting a headstand. Thats not the proper way to hold [the position], and you dont have the support in your elbows to help you maintain proper alignment, she says.

A headstand actually uses a ton of core strength unless you kick your legs to get into the pose. A lot of people tend to, instead of using core strength, they tend to just kick their leg off of the ground and expect their strength to hold them there, says Copeland.

While it is technically a headstand, you dont want to putallof your weight on your skull. Copeland says that this is another big form mistake that she often sees when really you should feel your weight in your arms more than anything.
