Colebrookdale elementary students learn health and wellness

Posted: at 6:15 pm

COLEBROOKDALE Although the primary focus at Colebrookdale Elementary School (CES) has always been to provide students with a solid education, these days there is also a secondary emphasis on health and wellness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity now affects 17 percent of all children and adolescents in the United States, triple the rate from just one generation ago, and the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that there is a 70 percent chance that overweight adolescents will become overweight adults.

Since unhealthy eating patterns and lack of physical activity are the most prevalent factors leading to weight gain in children and adolescents, the CES administration and staff decided to help the school population get and stay healthy.

One way the school is promoting good health is by implementing a breakfast program. In January, the CES cafeteria began offering a daily breakfast which, like the school lunch, is geared toward offering healthier options.

We try to be very health-conscious with the breakfast choices here to make them more nutritious, so for at least two meals of the day [the students] could be getting a good meal, explained CES principal Michael Stoudt.

The program is even more popular than anticipated, with an average of 75 of the 360 students eating breakfast at the school each morning. Although several other schools in the district also have breakfast programs, CES has the highest attendance in the area.

While diet is one component of good health, physical activity is also important. Since last year, CES students have been learning that video games need not be mindless time wasters, but can be active and healthful instead.

CES physical education teacher Darla Lieb used grant money last year to purchase a Wii video game system that she has since been using to teach children how fitness can be fun.

The students participate in the Wii Feel the Beat program, which teaches them to keep track of their heart rates while playing Wii games in order to draw conclusions about which games are most beneficial to their health. The hope is that the children will then take this knowledge home and participate in active games when they play with their own video game systems.

I like to encourage every student in my class to be able to find something that theyre going to enjoy and want to do outside of fitness class, said Lieb. Continued...

Fitness First slims down to trim debt

STRUGGLING health club chain Fitness First has been forced to sell a quarter of its Australian gyms as part of a restructure to wipe $890 million of debt from its British parent company.

Fitness First Australia is a division of the global company Fitness First Group, which is undergoing a debt-for-equity swap with lenders Oaktree and Marathon.

The lenders have agreed to write off all the company's debt for an equity stake.

The company, which will also shed clubs in Britain, has been hit by weak consumer spending and the rise of budget gyms. It is believed the Australian arm brings in more than 50 per cent of profits, despite accounting for only 25 per cent of clubs.

In an announcement yesterday, the company said it was selling 24 of its 97 clubs across the country that were underperforming to help improve its balance sheet.

''We have identified 24 clubs that do not fit our vision for the brand and these clubs are being put on the market for sale,'' said Fitness First Australia's managing director, Pete Manuel.

Advisory firm 333 Capital, which is helping the company find buyers, estimated the combined value of the clubs at about $50 million.

''It is a very attractive, national footprint of 24 clubs, and we are very confident of selling,'' said managing director Chris Martin.

STMicroelectronics and Soundchip Team to Revolutionize Sound Experience in the Ear

Posted: at 6:14 pm

Changing solution for personal audio combines unmatched sound performance with exciting new capabilities

New York - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications and a leading supplier of high-performance audio ICs, together with Soundchip SA, a Swiss-based innovator in audio-systems technology and originator of the High Definition Personal-Audio(TM) (HD-PA) Reference, today introduced technologies and components for the smart audio accessory - an exciting new concept in personal listening.

Worn like a pair of In-Ear Monitors (IEMs), the smart audio accessory features new means of controlling and personalizing the sound experience. Designed to be worn at all times, the smart audio accessory supports all use modes, including music, telephony and direct conversation, without requiring any reconfiguration of the apparatus in the ear. Furthermore, the smart audio accessory maintains a faithful reproduction of sound while providing a robust shield against unwanted background noise.

The smart audio accessory employs Soundchip's patented sound-processing technologies to provide a natural and comfortable sound experience when speaking, even with the accessory in place and physically sealing the ear. By electro-acoustically "opening" this seal, the smart audio accessory is able to pass ambient sound directly to the wearer, providing an ability to listen and converse naturally with the accessory still in place.

The smart audio accessory provides the ability to conveniently switch between different audio sources - voice, music or ambient sound - by simply pressing a button, making a pre-defined gesture or issuing a voice command. Various options are supported, including those that leverage ST's recognized leadership in MEMS motion sensors.

In addition, by connecting the smart audio accessory to a DSP or DSP-capable controller (such as the STM32 F4), and a smartphone or tablet computer, the sound experience can be further enhanced by taking advantage of custom-made apps, which individually process and mix sound sources to deliver innovative new features, such as augmented reality.

Comprising Soundchip's patented HD-PA Ready Electronic and Acoustic platforms combined with STMicroelectronics' best-in-class HD-PA Ready MEMS microphones, the smart audio accessory represents an exciting fusion of electronics, MEMS sensing technology and acoustics and provides a compelling example of the future of personal audio.

Mark Donaldson, Soundchip CEO, said, "The smart audio accessory combines the very best of Soundchip's unique audio-system technology for sound at the ear. We believe that the smart audio accessory represents a game changing solution that offers the users of smartphones, tablet computers and gaming devices a level of sound experience only dreamed of until now."

"As a global leader in the design and high-volume manufacturing of integrated circuits and MEMS, ST's collaboration with Soundchip aims to provide customers with the solutions they need to pioneer the audio products of the future," said Andrea Onetti, Audio and Sound Business Unit Leader at STMicroelectronics. "The smart audio accessory represents an exciting step forward made possible by the uncompromised quality and performance of our MEMS microphones combined with our expertise and experience in audio silicon design."

Soundchip and ST will be presenting examples of the smart audio accessory concept to customers throughout June.
