According to Microsoft, the new operating system will "change the way you interact with your PC, with improved functionality, speed and performance." The new "Metro" User Interface: the "Start" button and desktop shortcuts have been replaced with Windows Phone Metro-style tiles that both launch common applications and display notifications (like received email). You can "pin" any application to the Start screen to create a tile or group common applications into a single tile by dragging them together.

New Authentication Methods: there are now four authentication methods, three of which are new: PIN, Windows Live(R) ID, Picture Password, and the traditional User ID and Password. If you choose a Windows Live ID you have an option to sync your settings between multiple devices running Windows 8. Additionally, with SkyDrive(R) you can easily share files between all of your devices.

Faster Boot Times: Microsoft has introduced a hybrid shutdown and boot process that will take less than 10 seconds for a Windows 8 PC with a SSD (solid-state drive) to go from powered down to the start screen, which is 30% to 70% faster than Windows 7.

Refresh and Reset: reinstalling the OS or returning the PC to its original state is easier than ever. Microsoft has introduced an easy-to-use, step-by-step wizard to 'Reset' and 'Refresh' PC configurations. The 'Reset' feature helps users go back to the original state (default install) of their PC, which removes all data and apps while the 'Refresh' feature will restore default settings without losing any data or applications.

Six-year-old New Zealander Wealthy Man (NZ) (Danzighill x Tatts M' Name) claimed his first stakes success in Macau on Saturday, beating top racehorse Luen Yat Forever (Honours List) to win the M$700,000 M-2 Macau Directors' Cup (1500m).

French apprentice jockey Charles Perkins gave Wealthy Man the perfect ride in the feature race of the meeting, jumping on the speed before settling in the box seat just off the leaders and powering away in the straight. The race winning time of 1 minute 25.5 seconds was a new track record, over half a second quicker than the old record of 1 minute 26.1 seconds.

Trained by Stephen Chow, the win was Wealthy Man's eighth from 28 career starts. The six-year-old has been close to stakes success in the past having run second in the Listed Macau Sprint Trophy (1200m) in 2010 and third in the Listed Macau Hong Kong Trophy (1500m) in 2011.

JAKARTAIndonesia has been called the smiling face of Islam. Where the religion spread through much of the Middle East through military conquest, Islam in Indonesia (and in much of Southeast Asia) was brought in by Arab traders, proselytizing even as they were establishing commercial routes.

Which is not to say that Islam in Indonesia is less Islamic. I remember visiting the office of a judge in a Shariah court in Pakistan with women leaders from Southeast Asia. An Indonesian delegate remonstrated with the judge about his rather harsh interpretation of a point of law, and he asked: What country do you come from? Are you even Muslim? Of course I am Muslim, I come from Indonesia! she replied. Oh, Indonesia, said the judge with a smirk, you arent real Muslims!

We all left in a huff, and none was more irate than our Indonesian friend. Indonesia, after all, has the worlds largest Islamic population, and while Indonesian Muslims present to the world a gentle, smiling and tolerant face of Islam, they are no less religious, observant or loyal to their faith.

The women of Asyiyah-Muhammadiyah came to our Womens Edition seminar to talk about the role of this faith-based organization in promoting family planning and reproductive health in Indonesia. Dr. Atikah Zaki, the health and social coordinator of the womens branch of Muhammadiyah, came into the room dressed in a floor-length skirt, long-sleeved blouse and her head and neck covered in a scarf that reached down to her chest. Her two companions were dressed similarly. They were the very picture of Islamic modesty, as were most of the other women speakers.

And yet Zaki in particular was unabashed in her pride at the work that Asyiyah, the womens wing of Muhammadiyah, was doing in promoting family planning among their members. While Muhammadiyah was founded as a faith-based organization by a very influential and famous ulama (Islamic religious leader) in 1912 in Yogyakarta, Asyiyah was founded just five years later, and its work of upholding the status of women and promoting Islamic life has only been enhanced by its promotion of family planning and reproductive health.

AS EARLY as 1968, just when the BKKBN, the national family planning coordinating board, was established, a national congress of ulama issued a fatwa (decree) declaring that Muslims could practice certain family planning methods without committing offense.

Today, Asyiyah and Muhammadiyah endorse the following family planning methods: the contraceptive pill, the IUD, and withdrawal (although this last is considered a traditional method that is unreliable), while forbidding the promotion of abortion, menstrual regulation and sterilization.

Despite the limitations, Asyiyah effectively promotes family planning through a network of 86 hospitals and hundreds of clinics, while teaching responsible sexual behavior (though I doubt if they use the term) in their network of 87 universities and over 4,000 schools. As part of the associations commitment to look after the welfare of members, local leaders also conduct regular counseling sessions, mediating disputes between a husband and wife and even addressing such sensitive issues as domestic violence and premarital sex.

New Gloucester drops some unpaid tax bills

NEW GLOUCESTER Selectmen on Monday agreed unanimously to write off $17,297 in unpaid personal property taxes from 1998 to 2011.

The taxes include business establishments that never started, bankrupt businesses and those whose business establishments closed or moved out of town. One includes a person who died and another person is in jail.

The towns contracted assessing agent, Michael ODonnell, said often the towns records report miscellaneous items rather than a specific listing of items being taxed, making it more difficult to collect the taxes.

Town Manager Sumner Field III told the board in a memo that, "My recommendation is to abate these noncollectable taxes due to the reason listed to clear the accounting records and reflect a more realistic amount due to the town.

Going forward, I recommend that the Assessors approve a floor amount below which the Assessors Agent will not commit taxes on personal property, he said. He recommended a minimum value for business assets to be assessed and committed be set at $4,000.

ODonnell said the personal property tax list will require a workshop with selectmen in the future to discuss other personal property taxpayers in arrears. No action was taken.

In other business, selectmen agreed to fund $45,000 from Pinelands Tax Increment Financing funds to the New Gloucester Water District.

Lawrence Zuckerman, chairman of the three-member water district trustees, said in a letter to the board that the volunteer trustees are in the precarious position of applying for loans and grants and building a water system without insurance. Additional seed funding from the town will address this for fiscal year 2013.

The funds are earmarked for operations at $5,000; insurance at $5,000; legal work at $5,000; consulting fees at $10,000; fundraising efforts at $10,000; and contingency funds of $10,000.

Until the water system is built and generating income, the district has no source of income to undertake the work for the new water system, which is projected to cost $3 million.

The human resources department at HMC organised a workshop titled, Springboard Womens Development Programme in co-operation with the British Council. The one-month long programme, which consists of four different workshops, is being attended by 25 female employees from HMC. The Springboard Womens Development Programme, designed to enable women to take control of their lives by identifying clear, practical and realistic initiatives and take their own steps towards self-improvement, has won many international rewards, a spokesperson said. The programme covers some 26 countries and is being applied in all types of corporations, universities, public administrations and financial institutions. It has now been successfully used by over 200,000 women worldwide in 12 different languages. Instructor and consultant Einas Malkawi for Springboard UK said that Springboard counselling is a pioneering institution in the field of training and counselling. It works at an international level for the professional and personal development of women, she said. Malkawi explained that the programme included four workshops and participants were given a book containing a number of practical activities and ideas for them to work at. The workshops also include the attendance of a female guest, whose work is prominent in society, to share their success story with others. Several successful HMC female staff and women from the local community were invited to the workshops to highlight their professional and personal journies and any challenges they had faced whilst trying to achieve professional objectives in keeping with their personal, social and cultural values, she said. Malkawi emphasised the importance of the programme for HMCs female staff, reiterating that HMC recognised the vital role Qatari women have in both the society and civil service, in which they occupy senior administrative and executive positions. To expected outcomes of the workshop, she said that the participants will gain more self-confidence and self-motivation, clear objectives, better communication and interaction skills, the ability to reflect positive self-image and most significantly the ability to strike balance between a career and personal life.
