Posted: October 22, 2020 at 9:57 pm
Whether you enjoy romances, thrillers, mysteries or something else entirely, you can find a great selection of free e-books online.
In this article, Ill take a close look at 15 of the best websites and resources for finding free e-books online. Ive visited each of the websites listed below and flipped through a few e-books from each to see what the process for each site is like and whats available for free.
When you start looking for free e-books online, it wont be long before you start coming across less-than-reputable websites. Some may actually require you to enter payment information while others provide access to pirated content. Still, there are several websites and apps that you can use to download/read e-books legally and free. Among them are Project Gutenberg, Open Library, HooplaDigital and even Amazon.
If youre looking for a full list of ways to find free e-books that youd normally have to pay for, you probably wont find it on this list. Instead, Ive compiled 15 completely legal and free ways to find free e-books online.
Below, youll find detailed information on 15 different sites where you can legally read free e-books.
Major Genres: Kids, fiction, fantasy, mysteryBest For: Classic titles, kids booksPlatforms: App (iOS and Android), computer (online/download), e-readers (files)
Loyal Books is a great resource for finding both free e-books and free audiobooks. On the website, you can download the file format of your choice (text, EPUB, Kindle and more) or read the e-book directly in your browser. You can also download the Loyal Books app for iOS or Android. It has a rating of 4.4 on the App Store and 4.5 on Google Play.
When I checked out Loyal Books, I visited the website from my computer. Along the left-hand side of the screen, I was able to browse by popular genres (which includes a Top 100 list), more genres and languages. You can also search by title, author or keyword at the top of the screen.
After you find a title youre interested in, you can click on it for more information. Youll see the original author, a summary of the text, related links, a streaming widget, e-book downloads and audiobook options if available. From there, you can download the e-book text file to your computer, download the appropriate e-reader file or begin reading the book instantly in your browser.
Major Genres: Classic literature, educational resourcesBest For: Public domain titles, multiple formatsPlatforms: App (Android), computer (online/download), e-readers (files)
Project Gutenberg was founded in 1971, making it the oldest digital library. The website relies mostly on volunteers to upload digital files including e-books and audiobooks. At the time of writing, there were more than 60,000 free titles available. You dont even have to create an account to access them.
When I checked out Project Gutenberg, I visited the website on my computer. You can also download the app on your Android device; it has an average rating of 4.1 on Google Play. Unfortunately, there isnt a version available for iOS.
You can search for a specific title using the quick search bar at the top of the page. You can also browse available titles by scrolling over search and browse. The frequently downloaded section has several top 100 lists, and the bookshelf category is a great way to browse by subject. Once youve found a title that interests you, you can click on it to see the available files or read the e-book online.
Major Genres: Classic titles, science fiction, short storiesBest For: Public domain titlesPlatforms: App (iOS and Android), computer (download), e-readers (files)
Feedbooks is a digital library that focuses on both public domain texts and original work. While not all of the titles are available for free, you can click on Free Public Domain Books or Free Original Books to narrow your selection.
The partner app, Aldiko, is available for iOS and Android devices. It has a 2.6 rating on the App Store and a 4.0 rating on Google Play. When I visited the website, I thought it was fairly easy to use despite a couple of misdirected links.
When you find a title that youre interested in, you can click on it for more information. Or you can just click the Download button below the books cover on the search page to save the file. All of the books that I downloaded saved as EPUB files, and I wasnt able to make another format choice. But you can download an EPUB reader app for free.
Major Genres: Classic books, romance, thrillers, textbooksBest For: Variety, a large collectionPlatforms: App (iOS and Android), computer (online/download), e-readers (files)
Open Library is a project hosted by Internet Archive. Its goal is to make all published works available to everyone by collaborating with authors, librarians and people on the web. Open Library works like Wikipedia in the sense that you can edit the records yourself and add files/links to free books and e-books that arent listed, which means youll find an impressive collection.
You can visit Open Library online or download the app for your iOS or Android device. Unfortunately, the app has relatively low ratings: 1.5 on the App Store and 2.5 on Google Play. Despite those ratings, I thought the website was relatively easy to use.
Some books are available to sponsor (purchase), but the vast majority of books have a button beneath them that says read, borrow or check availability. Books that have the read button can be accessed immediately in your web browser. To access other books, youll need to create a free Open Library account. Once youve opened the book in the online reader, you can click the download button in the top-right corner to save the PDF or EPUB file to your computer.
Major Genres: Romance, mystery & thriller, science fiction, biographies, action & adventureBest For: Best-selling modern and classic booksPlatforms: Computer (online/download), e-readers (files)
Manybooks is another great resource for finding free e-books online. While there isnt currently an app available for iOS or Android devices, the website is really easy to use. Plus, there are a variety of file formats available to download including PDF and e-reader files.
When you first visit Manybooks, youll see a selection of popular genres available to browse. Or you can use the search bar at the top of the screen to look for a specific author, title or keyword. If you arent sure what you want to read, I recommend checking out Manybooks ultimate guide to the most popular free e-books. There, youll find a top-five list for several genres including romance, mystery, science fiction and more.
Once youve found a title youd like to read, you can click on it for more information including a description, excerpt, publication history and ratings/reviews from other readers. Youll also see the option to download a free file or to read the book online. No matter which method you choose, you shouldnt need to create an account.
Major Genres: Fiction, classics, historyBest For: Finding something newPlatforms: Computer (online/download), e-readers (files)
Digitalbook.io is a great resource for finding free e-books, audiobooks and podcasts. While there isnt currently an available app for either iOS or Android devices, the website is extremely easy to navigate. You can search for a title directly from the homepage, scroll down to see top-rated and trending books or browse by genre.
When I visited the website, I clicked on the fiction genre to begin exploring. Along the left-hand side of the screen, I was able to narrow my search results by format (e-book or audiobook), author, sub-genre and more.
Once you find a book youd like to read, you can click on the title or the Free eBook button on the right-hand side of the screen. From there, youll see the download options (Kindle, EPUB, Text, etc.) as well as the Read Now button that will open the text in your browser. Note that some files are available only from third-party providers (like Gutenberg or LibriVox), but youll still be able to download them on Digitalbook.io.
Major Genres: Romance, FantasyBest For: Discounted books, varietyPlatforms: App (iOS), computer (online/download), e-readers (files)
BookBub is a little different from other resources on this list because it simply compiles links to e-books that are free for only a limited time period. Youll see free e-books from Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Apple Books, Google Play and Kobo.
If you visit BookBub.com, youll be prompted to create an account to access the website. However, you can visit BookBubs free e-book page to bypass this step. From here, you can access links to hundreds of free e-books. Once youve found a title youre interested in, simply click one of the links below the books price to download it to your computer or device. Some retailers also let you open the e-book directly in your browser.
The BookBub app for iOS devices has a 3.1 rating on the App Store, and there isnt currently an app available on Google Play. When I checked out BookBub, I accessed the website online and found that it was really easy to use once I bypassed creating an account.
Major Genres: Adventure, science fiction, romanceBest For: Self-published e-booksPlatforms: Computer (online/download), e-readers (files)
Smashwords is a website that allows authors to self-publish e-books. While some authors choose to sell their e-books, others are available for free. There isnt currently an app available for Smashwords, but the website is convenient and easy to navigate. When you first visit the website, you can use the price filter at the top of the page to narrow your results so that youre seeing only free e-books.
To access most of the content on Smashwords, youll have to create a free account using your name and email address. Once youre logged in, you can instantly read and/or download free e-books. Once youve found a title youre interested in, click it to see more information and available formats. You can click a specific file type to begin the download or click online reader to see if the book is available to read in your browser without having to download it.
Keep in mind that you most likely wont find popular titles or public domain texts on Smashwords. Instead, youll find a collection of self-published books, essays, plays, poetry and screenplays. If you want to publish your own e-book, you can do that by clicking the publish tab.
Major Genres: Biography, young adult, fiction, literatureBest For: Library titles, new titles, multiple formatsPlatforms: App (iOS and Android), computer (online/download), e-readers (varies by library)
OverDrive provides access to free e-books and audiobooks through your local public library or school. That means youll need to enter your library card number or school/work email address in order to access free titles. Once youve signed in, youll need to save information about your local libraries so that you can see the entire selection available to you.
You can access OverDrive on your computer or as an app on your iOS or Android device. In addition to the OverDrive app (which has a 4.6 rating on both Google Play and the App Store) you can also check out the Libby app for iOS or Android. Its owned by the same company, provides access to the same titles and also has an average rating of 4.6. According to the website, the Libby app is the easiest way to get started, but if you have a device thats not compatible with Libby, you can use the OverDrive app for a similar experience.
Once youve found a title that interests you, you can click it to see additional information. Youll initially see information for the print copy at your nearest library, but if its available as an e-book or audiobook, youll see that noted as well. From there, you can click on the link to your librarys website to borrow the title, request a digital version or get on a waiting list for the book if its not currently available.
Major Genres: Modern classics, fiction, childrensBest For: Library titles, new releases and varietyPlatforms: App (iOS and Android), computer (online/download), e-readers (varies by library)
Hoopla is the digital service of Midwest Tape, which is a leading provider of entertainment and media to public libraries across North America. Youll find free e-books, audiobooks, movies, TV shows and more available from more than 1,500 libraries. You can visit the website or download the app the get started. At the time of writing, the app had a 4.8 rating on the App Store and a 4.7 rating on Google Play. When I checked out the service, I used the desktop version from my laptop.
Hoopla works just like a public library, which means you can instantly borrow free e-books at any time using your library card. If you dont already have a Hoopla account, you can create one for free online. You will need to log in to be able to borrow anything.
Once youre logged in, you can scroll over browse and click on e-books to see the entire available selection. When I checked out Hoopla, there were more than 168,000 e-book titles available. You can sort the titles or narrow your search results by format, user rating, date, language and more. Once youve found a title youre interested in, you can click on it for more information. Below the cover image, youll see the borrow button that you can click to read and/or download the title instantly.
Major Genres: Adventure, romance, self-publishedBest For: Kindle owners, mobile experiencePlatforms: App (iOS and Android), e-readers (Kindle)
Amazon offers a selection of free e-books that are available for anyone to download. The catch is that these e-books are free only on Kindle. But you dont have to have this specific e-reader in order to access the titles. Instead, you can download the Kindle app.
The app is available for both iOS and Android devices. At the time of writing, it had a rating of 4.8 on the App Store and 4.0 on Google Play. To add e-books to your Kindle library, you can visit Amazons website and search free e-books.
I recommend sorting your search results by price: low to high. This will rank the free e-books at the top. Note that some books are free only with a Kindle Unlimited membership. Still, if you want to access these titles, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial.
Major Genres: Historical fiction, romance, mystery, young adultsBest For: Kids books, free magazinesPlatforms: App (iOS and Android), e-readers (Nook)
Like Amazon, Barnes & Noble offers a selection of free e-books for its e-reader: the Nook. Fortunately, you can download the Nook app on your iOS or Android device instead of having to pay for the e-reader itself. The app has a 4.8 rating on the App Store and a 4.5 rating on Google Play.
To find free e-books, you can visit Barnes & Nobles website and navigate to the free e-books page. There, youll find a featured free e-book, top free e-books and additional categories. There are thousands of free e-books for kids as well as staff picks, classics and even magazines.
Once youve found a title youd like to read, you can click on it for more information. From there, you can see a quick overview, publication details and reviews/ratings from other readers. You can also add it to your shopping cart and check out for free. You will have to create a free account to purchase and read the free titles.
Major Genres: Romance, mystery & thriller, fantasy, horror, science fictionBest For: Kobo owners, young adult booksPlatforms: App (iOS and Android), e-readers (Kobo)
Kobo is a company that sells e-books, audiobooks, e-readers and tablets. Still, theres an impressive collection of free e-books that you can access online or from your mobile device.
Similar to Amazon and Barnes & Noble, youll need a Kobo e-reader or the Kobo app to read e-books from this resource. The app is free for iOS and Android devices. At the time of writing, it had a 4.6 rating on the App Store and a 4.3 rating on Google Play. To add free e-books to your Kobo library, you can visit the website online.
Once youve found the free e-books page, you can begin browsing titles by top picks, first in series, editor picks or genre. When you click on a title, youll see a brief overview, how many pages and words the book contains and an estimation of how long itll take to read. Additionally, you can read reviews/ratings from other readers.
Major Genres: Romance, personal development, textbooks, young adultBest For: First books in a seriesPlatforms: App (iOS and Android), computer (online)
Google Play Books is another resource worth checking out if youre looking for free e-books. While not all of the titles are available for free, there is a selection of titles that you can read at no cost. Among these titles, youll find self-help books, mysteries, thrillers, romance novels, young adult fiction and more. Many of these free e-books are the first in a series.
Once youve found a title youre interested in, you can click on it for additional information. Youll see a brief overview of the book as well as ratings and reviews from other readers. From there, you can click Free Ebook to add the title to your library. Of course, youll have to create a free account if you arent already logged in.
Once youve signed in and added books to your library, you can select them and click the read button to open them instantly in your browser. Of course, you can also read them on your mobile device using the Google Play Books app. At the time of writing, the app had a 4.6 rating in the App Store and a 4.1 rating on Google Play.
Major Genres: Engineering, I.T., businessBest For: Student textbooksPlatforms: Computer (online/download)
Bookboon is an online publishing company targeted at students. Youll find textbooks specializing in engineering, information technology and business. In addition to textbooks, Bookboon also provides access to books that focus on both personal and professional growth.
Unfortunately, access to textbooks on Bookboon is free only if you sign up as a student. Business e-books are free for a 30-day trial, but then a monthly subscription is required. Still, this website can be a great resource for STEM students in search of free textbooks.
While there isnt currently an app available for Bookboon, the website is pretty straightforward. Once youve created an account and logged in, you can click on Categories to browse available e-books. You can also look for a title or keyword using the search bar at the top of the page. Titles with the Free Textbook label are available for free if you create a student account. Once you find a title youre interested in, you can click Start Reading to open the book in your browser, add the title to your Bookboon library or download a PDF file.
Ultimately, any of these websites/apps are worth checking out if youre looking for free e-books.
To see whats available at your local public library, be sure to check out HooplaDigital and OverDrive. For general public domain titles, try Project Gutenberg or Feedbooks. Loyal Books and Manybooks also offer a great selection of classic titles. If youre a student looking for textbooks, Bookboon is the website to visit.
For a bigger variety, check out Open Library or BookBub. Digitalbook is another great resource that provides access to a large collection of free e-books, and the website is set up to help you find something new that youll love. If youre more interested in self-published titles, Smashwords is the website for you.
Finally, youll find a collection of free e-books available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Kobo. While each of these e-books are available only on the retailers e-readers, you can download the corresponding free app to access these titles too. If you still havent found what youre looking for, theres a small selection of free e-books on Google Play Books worth checking out that you can read online or in the app.
No matter where you decide to hunt for free e-books, just make sure youre visiting safe and legal websites. You shouldnt have to download any software or enter any payment information in order to read e-books that are truly free.

Red Bull need a driver who will push Verstappen in 2021 – Marko – RaceFans
Posted: at 9:57 pm
Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko says the team must have two drivers who can maximise their point scores in the constructors championship next year.
Speaking on Sky Sport Germany, Marko said there was no urgency to change Red Bulls line-up mid-season this year as they did in 2019 and 2016 because they are unlikely to lose their second place in the constructors championship.
At present we have no problems in the constructors championship because with Max and [Albon] we are in a good place, said Marko. The fights behind us are between Renault, McLaren and Racing Point who keep taking points off each other. Our second place is not in danger so at present we dont see any necessity to act.
However Marko said the team must consider it options carefully for its driver line-up for the 2021 F1 season.
Our aim for next year is to fight for the championship, so we will need consistency. Of course we realise that Max is not really being pushed, and we need to know where the limit of our car lies.
Albon joined Red Bull in the middle of last season as a replacement for Pierre Gasly. He made an encouraging start for the team, but Marko said his continued inconsistency remains a concern.
In fast corners the telemetry shows that Albon is on a par with Max. But then there are one or two corners where he loses time excessively, which brings us back to his consistency.

Because you dont know when or where it will happen, that is a concern which we cannot afford when we chase the championship.
Tsunoda is on course for a promotion to AlphaTauriAlbon endured a difficult weekend at the Nurburgring: He was forced into early retirement after flat-spotting a tyre on the first lap, then collided with Daniil Kvyats AlphaTauri. Nonetheless Marko was satisfied by aspects of his performance.
In qualifying he was clearly a lot closer to Max as a result of the car being more consistent, not as unstable in the back, said Marko. But as a result of locking up he had to make an early pit stop for a tyre change.
He made his way up the field with some good times, then of course he made an unnecessary manoeuvre, on the sister team, and he should have acted in the interests of the parent company.
However Marko made it clear Albon could keep his place. If Albon manages to develop himself further, makes constant improvements, then he is a candidate for our car in 2021.
Although Red Bull junior driver Juri Vips has recently become eligible to apply for a super licence, following the FIAs revision of the points system due to the effects of the pandemic, Marko said there was only one junior candidate being considered for a move up to F1 next year.
Sure we have our young driver programme, but presently we have only [only] one candidate for F1, and that is Yuki Tsunoda, the Japanese driver. He is planned for AlphaTauri if he manages to collect the necessary superlicence points.

Frederic D. Washington: Fastest-growing university in the state, but at what cost? – Shreveport Times

Recently, BIZ, a business journal for northwest Louisiana featured Louisiana State University in Shreveport, or LSUS as the fastest-growing university in the state.
The feature referred largely to the growth of enrollment in online graduate degrees in the fields of business and education. The news is in stark contrast to headlines between 2010 and 2014, where topics covered a potential merger with Louisiana Tech University, a new chancellor, and the overhaul of LSUS branding to align with the LSU Systems commitment to one brand.
The source of those headlines came from what was perceived as a comprehensive university that was struggling to attract and most importantly retain students. This would become in part a motivation towards the schools Quality Enhancement Plan of 2015, which is something schools present at their accreditation renewal as an ongoing commitment to improving learning outcomes.
More: LSUS reports enrollment increase, top-ranking as fastest-growing higher ed institution
By 2015, LSUS like many schools stripped the GRE and GMAT testing requirements, which were previously used as a quality control factor to determine admissions to graduate-degree programs. During that same time, the marketing and recruitment format for the online degree programs had changed. The admissions office and the academic departments handled marketing and recruitment for online programs, until the university partnered with a Dallas-based education consulting company, Academic Partnerships, or AP.
According to publicly published faculty senate meeting minutes, on March 16, 2017, university administrators acknowledged that Academic Partnerships would collect half of revenues generated from students they recruited to the Master of Business Administration and Master of Education Programs. This means, LSUS pays Academic Partnerships $1 for every $2 earned.
By comparison in Spring 2014, Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, boasted its designation from US News and World Report as the fastest-growing university in the state. Concordia was founded in 1905 as a normal school for priests and male teachers and evolved to a four-year co-educational private university.
As years went by the school sought to provide academic programs that were of interest to the community. The school had implemented online learning as early as the mid-2000s but experienced a modicum of success in growing its population.
That changed in 2010, when the school reached out to a for-profit education consulting firm, HotChalk. The partnership with HotChalk would grow the enrollment in the Master of Education programs by the thousands from year to year. HotChalk was tasked with marketing and recruitment of the online education programs afforded by Concordia University. According to The Oregonian, Concordia reportedly awarded more Master of Education degrees than any college or university in the country in 2016.
While enrollment numbers would continue to climb and remain at levels that rivaled online graduate programs across the nation, financial sustainability was a major issue for an institution that was reportedly fast-growing.The university would experience difficulty in making good on loan payments, and reached out to its parent, the Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod for financial support. That financial support washed away as the conservative leaning body frowned upon LGBTQ programming on the Portland campus.
On Feb, 7, 2020, administrators at Concordia University announced it would close, as a result of a changing educational landscape and mounting financial challenges. While there were plans in place for students to complete their degrees at other schools, there were still more questions than answers. How could the fastest-growing school in the state cite financial reasons for its closure if there had been so much growth? College is not free, therefore with record enrollment should come higher revenues for Concordia, right? Wrong.
The aforementioned partnership with HotChalk provided name recognition, and perhaps a larger alumni base for the school, but at great cost. According to Inside Higher Education and The Oregonian by the year 2024, Concordia would only receive $1 of every $3 made in revenues. HotChalk would pocket the rest.
Frederic D. Washington(Photo: Submitted Photo)
Are partnerships between private corporations and public or nonprofit schools, less beneficial to one party in the long run? The Concordia story represents how growth does not necessarily constitute sustainability if there are unfair elements at play. For the most part, schools are mission driven organizations, whereas profit driven organizations like HotChalk and Academic Partnerships are only concerned with their bottom line.
The growth achieved through partnerships with companies comes with great scrutiny in academia. While online education is rapidly growing, it cannot fully replace learning experiences that appeal to diverse learning styles and needs. During a Feb.17, 2017 faculty senate meeting, LSUS faculty expressed concern that the growth of online programming would dilute from the scope and mission of the university, and further expressed their concern regarding the lack of communication, and academic freedom with regard to Academic Partnerships.
Faculty senate members have also questioned on multiple occasions if it is ethical for Academic Partnerships to collect 50% of the tuition dollars collected by LSUS. While growth has been achieved in online programming, the institution still has a responsibility to aggressively address face to face enrollment in programs.
In the case of Concordia, the rapid expansion of online programs seemed to distract from pressing issues regarding the overall sustainability of the school. With four provosts within the last four years, turnover with three the deans in the College of Arts and Sciences, and marginal increases in the freshman population, could online growth at LSUS be distracting from truly assessing sustainability?
More: Letter: Louisiana State University Shreveport - our university
According to the minutes of the Sept.8, 2020 faculty senate meeting, the 2020-21 budget for LSUS is $61.5 million. Of that number, the state appropriates $8.5 million, representative of a near decade of divestment in higher education from the State of Louisiana.
Like most schools in the state, LSUS operates largely off student tuition and fees. For the students in the academic programs that represent the largest portion of growth, that means massive student loan receipts, as graduate students do not qualify for federal grants. The school promotes a 14%increase in incoming freshman to the media, because it sounds better than reporting the raw number of about 50 additional students.
The COVID-19 pandemic has crippled the economy and that impact is expected to be experienced at the state level and could lead to additional divestment in state schools like LSUS. Dependency on fickle state support and tuition receipts driven largely on student loans, is not representative of responsible, sustainable growth.
The LSU System, which is the parent for LSUS prides itself on being involved in all 64 of the parishes across the state. If this pride point has any significant validity, LSUS should position itself towards programming and a framework that supports and represents the community it serves, in addition to those around the world. The current climate of growth represents a marketing and recruitment firms ability to recruit students to enlarge their bottom line. Such partnerships would lead one to believe that higher education has resorted to renting accreditation to exist.
With full disclosure: Dr. Frederic Washington of Shreveport is an educator and served as the Academic Counselor for the College of Arts and Sciences at LSUS between 2017 and 2019. He also earned degrees with distinction from LSUS and Concordia University.

Its the final countdown. With the U.S. Presidential election only two weeks away, election year stress is making the rounds on Wall Street, but one pro argues that regardless of the outcome, opportunity could emerge.Oppenheimers Chief Investment Strategist John Stoltzfus notes that in the last leg of the race to the White House, the markets appear to be signaling that no matter how loud the rhetoric gets from either side and no matter which side wins, investment opportunity in some form is likely to prevail over risk beyond inauguration day in January 2021. He added, In our experience opportunity often arises from uncertainty while a perception of certainty often breeds complacency. As for Q3 earnings season, its already surprising to the upside. Although its still too early to tell how the season will play out, Stoltzfus says so far so good. Data from the past weekend shows 84% of companies that already reported have beat earnings expectations and 82% have exceeded revenue expectations for the quarter. Taking Stoltzfus outlook into consideration, Oppenheimers analysts are pounding the table on two under-the-radar stocks, noting that each could double or more in the next year. Using TipRanks database, we found out that the rest of the Street is also on board, as each boasts a Strong Buy consensus rating.NeuBase Therapeutics (NBSE)Developing the next generation of gene-silencing therapies with its flexible, highly specific synthetic antisense oligonucleotides, NeuBase Therapeutics wants to improve the lives of patients everywhere. Based on the strength of its platform, Oppenheimer thinks big things could be in store.Firm analyst Hartaj Singh highlights the company'sPeptide-nucleic acid (PNA) AnTisense OLigonucleotide (PATrOL) platform, which enables rapid drug design to treat various medical abnormalities, systemic delivery (IV), blood-brain barrier penetration, increased cell permeability, access to genomic loci and secondary RNA structures and the development of highly selective therapies, as overcoming the technical limitations to first-generation antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs).We believe that in the profound potential of ASOs to treat diseases, the current field of first-gen therapies has created a hurdle for a company like NBSE, whereby its technical advantages to ASOs through its PATrOL platform could lead to therapies with a better risk/benefit profile, Singh explained.Additionally, the long-tail redistribution of NBSE's PNAs could have significant implications in terms of the dosing regimens for these agents (potentially weeks to months). Singh mentioned, In combination with the enhanced druggability of targets via PNAs, we continue to view the PATrOL platform's potential highly, with the customary attention reserved for safety on such novel medicines. After the first half of 2020 helped shine additional validation on this platform, the company remains on track with its lead Huntington's disease (HD) candidate, NT0100. Additional preclinical results and candidate selection are set to come by YE20.Looking at the available preclinical NHP data, it supports broad biodistribution and rapid tissue uptake following systemic (IV) administration, an important feature of the platform, according to Singh. As the delivery of therapeutics and their penetration of deep brain structures remain of paramount importance for diseases such as HD, we are encouraged leading up to additional PD data from preclinical models (Q4 2020) Despite the early nature of these preclinical NHP PK data and in-vitro PD data, we believe that they strongly validate the approach NeuBase has taken to truly develop a better mousetrap, and differentiate its technology from conventional ASOs, he commented. These features are inheritable across the class of PNAs NeuBase hopes to bring forward, and thus, Singh has high hopes for NT0200, its product for HD and myotonic dystrophy (DM1). DM1 is trailing the HD program by approximately six months. Following candidate selection in 1H21, IND-enabling studies could kick off. Everything that NBSE has going for it prompted Singh to leave his Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating as is. Along with the call, he keeps the price target at $17, suggesting 104% upside potential. (To watch Singhs track record, click here)Are other analysts in agreement? They are. Only Buy ratings, 4 to be exact, have been issued in the last three months. Therefore, the message is clear: NBSE is a Strong Buy. Given the $16.50 average price target, shares could soar 97% in the next year. (See NBSE stock analysis on TipRanks)Prevail Therapeutics (PRVL)Next up we have Prevail Therapeutics, which is developing disease-modifying gene therapies for patients with Parkinsons disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. After an impressive update on the progress of its pipeline, Oppenheimer likes what its seeing.Representing the firm, analyst Jay Olson highlights the encouraging data from the Phase 1/2a PROPEL trial evaluating its lead candidate, PR001, in Parkinsons disease (PD) patients with the GBA1 mutation (PD-GBA). This mutation affects roughly 9% of all PD patients in the U.S.Looking more closely at the trial, it enrolled two patients, with preliminary data demonstrating normalization of CSF GCase activity at month-three from undetectable levels at baseline. According to Olson, this strongly suggests clinical improvement. It should be noted that there were serious adverse events (SAEs) at month-three, likely related to immune response to AAV9 capsid, that resolved. However, the analyst argues the immune response in AAV9 gene therapies is normal and transient.Additionally, PRVL submitted a protocol amendment for the PROPEL trial, and enrollment is expected to continue in 2H20. The company wants to change the design to an open-label study targeting 12 patients, including the two current patients, and plans to optimize the immunosuppresive regimen to spare steroid administration. To this end, two-month safety and biomarker data in a subset of patients is set to come by mid-2021. Should the therapy ultimately be approved for this indication, Olson sees possible 2035 risk-unadjusted sales of $8 billion. On top of this, a normalization of CSF GCase activity at month-four from undetectable levels at baseline was also seen in a Gaucher disease (GD2) patient on PR001 within compassionate use program. This rare inherited lysosomal disorder is also caused by autosomal recessive inheritance in the GBA1 gene.In Olsons opinion, this result provided positive read across to the Phase 1/2 PROVIDE study in GD2, initiating in 2H20. Because GD2 is an ultrarare disease that affects infants and results in a very short life expectancy, we believe the GD2 indication has a shorter regulatory pathway compared to other GBA1-related indications. We estimate PR001 approval, if clinically successful, may happen in 2024 given a lack of treatments for GD2 patients, he mentioned. Whats more, the Phase 1/2 PROCLAIM study of PR006, its therapy for GRN frontotemporal dementia (GRN-FTD), is expected to kick off in 2H20, with the two-month biomarker readout from a subset of patients slated for late 2020 or early 2021.Given all of the above, Olson stated, We view share price at an attractive entry point while PRVL remains well-capitalized with $131 million in cash providing runway into 1H22.It should come as no surprise, then, that Olson stays with the bulls. In addition to an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating, he left a $25 price target on the stock. Investors could be pocketing a gain of 156%, should this target be met in the twelve months ahead. (To watch Olsons track record, click here)All in all, other analysts echo Olsons sentiment. 5 Buys and no Holds or Sells add up to a Strong Buy consensus rating. With an average price target of $23.25, the upside potential comes in at 139%. OPINION: Zoom classes can teach us how classism and ableism are ingrained in our education system – The Alestle
Posted: at 2:58 am
Students with disabilities and students with low incomes face more barriers to online education than able-bodied, upper class students and it needs to be addressed.
Due to the pandemic, there has been a call for teachers and professors to show more compassion and leniency, but they have spent years withholding that same compassion and leniency from students with disabilities. Able-bodied students have been getting extensions and accommodations that were scoffed at before COVID-19, like attending class remotely. Students with disabilities have been asking for these accommodations for years and theyre only now being implemented because it is able-bodied students who are affected. It shows these accommodations were always available, but were never given because professors could not empathize with their students or just didnt care.
People with disabilities have been advocating for themselves for a long time to try to get accommodations like recorded lectures and remote work. Back in March, people with disabilities across the country took to Twitter with the hashtag #DisabledAndSaltyAF to share their frustrations. Many shared stories about being denied accommodations in school or at work that are now widely available for able-bodied people.
Meanwhile, other accommodations have been forgotten about in the rush to create online curriculums. Professors sometimes neglect to provide captions or transcriptions of their video lectures. Some websites offer auto-generated captions, but those are often inaccurate. Students who are hard of hearing or have some form of auditory processing issues need accurate captions to understand their lectures. Many online readings are images of the text that are unable to be read by screen readers. Students are given longer reading assignments than pre-COVID that are especially difficult to get through for students with learning disabilities like ADHD.
Online classes and policies are also incredibly classist. Many instructors ask students to keep their cameras on, and in some cases, their microphones unmuted. This can be really uncomfortable for students who live in poverty and dont want to show their living conditions to their teachers and classmates. Students who are now at home may also be helping care for younger siblings or their own children due to online schooling. Some teachers dont want their students to attend class in their bed, but if they dont have a desk to work at, there arent many options.
There is also the issue of the digital divide, which disproportionately impacts students of color. An estimated 16.9 million students dont have access to high-speed internet according to a report compiled by education and civil rights organizations. Native American students are the most likely to be without internet at 34.2 percent, followed by Latino students at 31.2 percent and Black students at 30.6 percent.
The requirement of keeping a students camera on can also make learning difficult for some students due to potentially not having fast enough wi-fi to handle using video. It also doesnt help if the student has siblings who are also in Zoom classes at the same time. Some students may not have computers with working webcams or cant afford them. While the CARES Act funding SIUE offered attempted to rectify this, the money ran out before some students could apply.
There needs to be more of an effort made by school and university administrators as well as educators to make sure everyone has equal access to education even during the pandemic. Whenever were able to resume normal life, we need to continue allowing people to use these online formats. Its been proven that it can be done and the only thing preventing it was ableism.

5 common mistakes you should avoid while learning things online – India Today
Posted: at 2:58 am
The effect of Covid-19 on educational institutions led to a significant spike in enrolments in online training since March20. The ability to learn anywhere and anytime, through online training, is allowing learners to study safely from their homes while maintaining social distance. Studying in an online environment has been a new experience for a lot of students, introducing various advantages and challenges.
On one hand, where students became technologically sound and were introduced to new learning methods and engaging content. While on the other hand, they struggled to manage time, build ownership, become organised, and self-disciplined learners.
As a final decision in regards to the opening of schools and colleges has not yet been announced, students would continue applying to online training to skill up and use their time productively.
Here are a few mistakes students must avoid, before or after enrolling in online training, to make the most of it.
Researching helps students to find the right training that can fulfill their expectations of gaining a new skill, getting an internship/job in the future, building a project of their own, or getting certified. Based on their interests, the availability of career opportunities, teaching mechanism, and availability of funds, research allows learners to find suitable training. Before enrolling in training, individuals must gather adequate information about the training, its content, its ratings, online and offline reviews, and media articles and blogs to ensure their learning goals will be met successfully.
Learning through digital devices brings inevitable distractions in the form of messages, calls, and notifications. Students must consider making notes while learning through videos, tutorials, documents, PDFs, or presentations which help to build focus and increase retention. While writing, students tend to think more intensely, process more information, detect more doubts and questions, enhance their memory, and boost creativity. While revising, students can simply refer to these notes to find important topics instead of rewatching the whole video lessons, which saves time and boosts productivity.
A lot of students, in a physical classroom, find asking questions embarrassing. However, online learning solves this issue as well. While learning online, students can ask questions on the dedicated student support forum which ensures anonymity and allows students to get expert solutions within no time. Students who come up with more questions generally have a deep interest in the subject, are actively involved while learning, detect their own faults and work on them positively, challenge themselves to learn better, and develop critical thinking skills essential for a successful future.
Quizzes, challenges, exercises, assignments, and projects are included in online training to bridge the gap between students theoretical and practical understanding of the subject. Most of the online training platforms do not mandate completing
assignments or projects to allow students to learn flexibly. However, students must set up a schedule and timely complete the assignments as these help in the development of cognitive, analytical, problem-solving, planning, organizing, time management, and various other soft and domain skills. Assignments also compel students to observe their surroundings, brainstorm, apply real-life examples, research deeply, and improve their overall understanding of the subject.
Excessive exposure to the laptop or mobile screen, without dedicated breaks, could lead to a lack of interest and focus. Learners might also encounter mental or physical health issues like eye problems, headaches, and body pain. To improve attention and focus, it is important to add dedicated breaks in the learning schedule and spend those breaks productively too.
Some stretching exercises, taking a walk, cleaning up, meditation, talking to family members, listening to music, or playing quick board games are a few positive activities that one can do during their study break to feel refreshed and energised. Things such as watching TV or a series, playing video games, eating big meals, and relying on junk food and excessive caffeine must be avoided as such unhealthy habits detach people from learning and make them much lazy instead.

New Rankings: The Best Online University Programs Based On Their ROI – Forbes
Posted: at 2:58 am
With salary and debt numbers gathered from the U. S. Department of Educations College Scorecard, a ... [+] new ranking system uses colleges' return on investment (ROI) to evaluate institutions.
As more students turn to online education during the pandemic, theyre becoming increasingly interested in learning about the costs and payoffs of online degree programs. Now, Optimal (formerly the SR Education Group and the host forGradReports.com) has rebranded its Guide to Online Schools as a new source of such information.
The new product is called OnlineU, and this month it released 2021 Best Colleges for Return on Investment Rankings. The rankings are based on major-specific median salary and mean debt numbers gathered from theU. S. Department of Educations College Scorecard.
The pandemic has significantly accelerated the growth of online learning and delivered us into a territory where there is not a lot of qualitative or quantitative information yet, said Optimal founder and CEO Sung Rhee. OnlineU is looking to fill this space with our data-driven articles and outcomes-based rankings focused specifically on return on investment, so students are able to vet the value and outcome of their choices rather than playing the guessing game.
To determine mid-career return on investment (ROI), schools were ranked by graduates salaries and debt payments 10 years after graduation, accounting for standard salary growth and interest on debt payments. Each school was given a percentile "ROI score" that shows how the salary and debt of alumni from that school's online programs compared to similar ones.
A statistical score was calculated that compared each degree programs 10-year ROI with the average 10-year ROI for all other programs in the same field. The scores for the programs offered online at each school were averaged and schools were ranked from highest to lowest on this average score. To be considered, schools needed to have the necessary data available for a minimum number of online programs at the associates, bachelors, and masters level.
The Top 20 Online Universities based on bachelors degrees include public, private non-profit, and for-profit institutions. They include traditional campus-based institutions as well as those that are exclusively online:
The Top Ten Online Universities based on masters degrees are all well-established public or private, nonprofit schools.
In addition to these rankings, the site also ranks individual degree programs in a number of fields.
Every college ranking system is limited by its methodology, and consumers need to understand that interpreting the results must be tempered by what data are collected and how. In the case of these online degree rankings, the reported salaries are specific to a limited time frame, and theyre extrapolated from earlier figures. The debt figures cover only federal loans, not other sources. Additionally, universities with a small number of online programs, and programs with a small number of graduates are not included.
Finally, the value of college should not be measured only in terms of dollars and cents. Many students dont go to college merely as a financial investmenta plan to make a profit. They want to learn how to lead informed, engaged livescombined withthe opportunity to be paid well as they do so.They want to encounter new ideas from people who are different from them. And they want to develop relationships that give lasting meaning to their lives. No ranking system fully captures all those motivations.
Nonetheless, understanding future financial outcomes is of interest to prospective students and their families as they grapple with the question of whether a college education is worth it. The 2021Best Colleges for Return on Investment Rankings offers some useful information on that score.
