Yoga instructor, 75, leads unique class in Apollo Beach

If you've never tried yoga before, there's an affordable class available right in our own backyard.
Calvary Lutheran Church, 5309 U.S. 41 N., Apollo Beach, hosts a weekly yoga class taught by longtime instructor Janie Ratcliffe on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m.
Ratcliffe practices Hatha yoga, which calls for gentle, basic movements; slow-paced stretching; poses with some simple breathing exercises and seated meditation. Her class is a place to learn beginners' poses, relaxation techniques and to become comfortable with yoga.
What makes her class unique is the way she teaches. During the hour-long class, Ratcliffe verbally describes every pose in detail, which helps create an ease of concentration.
The practice was born out of necessity, when she had a blind student in her class six years ago.
"As a (former registered) nurse, you find a way to help people," she said. "I thought if I can describe the poses to her, she will be able to participate."
So she did, and the woman stayed in her class until moving away six years later. Since that time she also has had deaf and hearing-impaired people who appreciate her gentle voice and attention to detail, she said.
Ratcliffe, 75, grew up in Charlotte, N.C., where she earned a degree as a registered nurse from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1970.
She discovered yoga through a friend 25 years ago and found the practice helpful in relieving body stress and keeping it in balance.

YogaVibes Partners with Master Yoga Teacher Sri Dharma Mittra
Posted: at 8:45 am
YogaVibes, a leading distributor of online yoga videos, is deeply honored to partner with legendary yoga teacher Sri Dharma Mittra.
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) January 16, 2013
As the founder of one of the earliest independent schools of yoga in New York City - the Dharma Yoga Center - Dharma Mittra has taught hundreds of thousands of students for nearly a half century. He continues to share the complete traditional science of yoga through daily classes, workshops, and his "Life of a Yogi" Teacher Certification programs at the Dharma Yoga New York Center and around the world.
"If you have a little spiritual knowledge, you should share it with others. This is the highest expression of charity there is," says Yogi Sri Dharma Mittra.
We at the Dharma Yoga New York Center have decided to partner with YogaVibes in presenting the teachings of Sri Dharma Mittra to honor the dictum quoted above, says Adam Frei, Director of the Life of a Yogi Teacher Training Programs. It is our sincere desire that those without access to yoga will now be able to access it wherever they are to help remove some of the darkness from their lives, the darkness that is ignorance. After researching the content providers currently online, we approached YogaVibes on the recommendation of a student of Sri Dharma Mittra's who had had a wonderful experience being filmed by them and having the filmed classes streamed by them. Our core mission at the DYNYC is to expose as many as possible to the expression of classical Eight-limbed yoga that is Dharma Yoga and we greatly appreciate this partnership with YogaVibes that is now going to help us reach that many more people, hopefully, for many years to come. You may not have the time or resources to come to New York or to wherever Sri Dharma Mittra or his certified teachers are teaching, but now Sri Dharma himself can come to you through streaming -- we thank YogaVibes for making this a reality.
YogaVibes is delighted to make this a reality and offer a wealth of online yoga teachings with Sri Dharma Mittra:
Master Sadhana Practice (74 minutes)
Quiet the turbulent mind so as to experience the peace, contentment and realization of the Divinity already present within you in this challenging, yet graceful and meditative posture series steeped in 50 years of Sri Dharma Mittra's experience of the classical tradition.
Yoga Nidra: Psychic Sleep Relaxation Method (45 minutes)
Be guided into a state of deep relaxation where breathing and thoughts are slowed almost to the point of stopping, which can be as restorative as a full night's sleep.

Youngsters, moms share benefits from yoga
Posted: at 8:44 am
Many adults have realized the benefits of yoga, including increased flexibility and strength, better posture, improved balance and stressrelief.
But what about yoga for babies andtoddlers?
Yoga instructor Valerie Pike, of Oxnard, says babies as young as 2 months old, as well as toddlers and children of all ages, benefit from the stretchingexercise.
This winter, she brings her class for babies to Camarillo for the first time. Mommy & Me Itsy Bitsy Yoga is offered from 10-11 a.m. Wednesdays at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley St. The first class was Jan. 9, but classes will be held weekly through March, and the class still has openings for moms and children ages 2 monthsto4.
Jeri Armstrong, Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District community programs supervisor, said Pike approached the district about offering her class, and she hopes to offer more, including a children's summercamp.
"We definitely are always looking for additional 'mommy and me' and preschool-age programs," Armstrong said. "We thought this would be a good way to encourage health and wellness at a young age. A lot of moms are looking to get back in shape. And it's a great way to bring moms to the communitycenter."
Armstrong noted that the district offers other yoga classes for adults, too, with differentinstructors.
Pike has taught yoga to children and adults through Ventura's recreation program for more than a year, and she will teach classes for adults, children and babies at the Barranca Vista Center in east Ventura beginning nextweek.
Pike, 39, had taken up yoga several years ago but had stopped for a time. When she gave birth to her daughter more than four years ago, Pike said she wanted to do yoga again because her pregnancy caused arthritis inherback.
"It hurt me to drive, to sit. When I got back to doing yoga again, it strengthens the muscles around your spine," Pike said. "Now I don't have any arthritis. It cured me; it reallydid."

Is Yoga Too Religious for Schools?
Posted: at 8:44 am
Jim Gillen of Yoga Calm, an educational childrens yoga program based in Portland Oregon, understands why some Christian parents think yoga in schools is a religious practice.
Given that yogas history goes back thousands of years and has influenced Hinduism, Buddhism and many other religions, we understand the potential for confusion, he writes in a polite letter that he sends to people who ask the religion question. Adding to it is the way yoga is practiced. New styles are added consistently, with 17 million Americans currently using some form of it in a wide variety of settings, from professional sports programs to health clubs, hospitals to churches and synagogues.
This connection between yoga and religion has ignited protests from a small group of conservative parents at Paul Ecke Central Elementary in San Diego. At the public school, students partake in mandatory 30-minute yoga classes.

The parents state that the classes are religious indoctrination in line with the Hindu religion and a violation of the First Amendment. They point out that the pilot classes are funded by the Jois Foundation, which is a nonprofit founded in memory of Krishna Pattabhi Joisthe father of Ashtanga yogawho brought that type of yoga to California from India in 1975.
Theyre not just teaching physical poses, theyre teaching children how to think and how to make decisions, one parent told The New York Times. Theyre teaching children how to meditate and how to look within for peace and for comfort. Theyre using this as a tool for many things beyond just stretching.
On the Jois Foundation website, it states, The Jois Foundation, with the University of San Diego & the University of Virginia, is measuring the results that yoga has on school children. This is done with the purpose of bringing Health & Wellness into the forefront of our education system: healthier children, improved educational performance, better quality of life, investing in our future.
Yoga CalmsGillen says that the benefits of yoga are already evident in young kids. He and his wife created their program in 2002 in direct response to the increasing levels of stress and behavior problems that Lynea was seeing at her elementary school, which was in a rural, conservative and very Christian Oregon community, he says.
He says the key consideration for schools is to look specifically at any new school activity to determine its appropriateness, not just lump it into a category because of its name or to disqualify it because something like it once was used in a religious context.
As parents ponder whether to sue the Encinitas Unified School District in San Diego over yoga, the school district broadened the yoga classes earlier this month to include all students, not just elementary students, as part of a life-skills curriculum.

Reclaim Your Life Ep 1
reclaimfromwithin.com @reclaimyourlife Reclaim! Your Life My name is Pam Rabb, Owner and Operator of Reclaim! Reclaim! is a life, wellness, and career coaching service. So what is coaching? Coaching is still in its early stages, so there are various explanations of coaching out there. But Reclaim! defines it as the fostering of personal or professional discovery, learning, and development by aiding in goal identification and setting, and serving as a motivator and supporter, while offering minimal assistance as you work to enhance yourself by achieving your desired goal. What coaching is not: counseling or therapy. These disciplines look into the past and provide diagnosis; Where coaching helps to focus on a specific goal. In short, as your coach my job is to guide you through the process, be your cheerleader as you work to achieve your goal, and help you find your motivation when the going gets though. Reclaim! helps you focus on your mind, body, and spiritual wellness and career. You might be thinking I can do that on my own. True, but many people do not know how to create effective goals -- that is, goals that get results. In every aspect of life, there are those who excel and those who struggle. The individuals that struggle seek the expertise of those who excel. You can think of me as a contractor here to help you move to the next level -- to be a better you. At Reclaim! We believe you have the tools within you to reclaim (or claim for the first time) the ability to ...
