Baby Yoga Big Hit in New York

Posted: February 19, 2013 at 9:47 pm

The sound of the Tibetan bowl rings in another yoga class.

But this time the students are a little younger than usual in New York.

Yoga has become more mainstream as a form of physical exercise in recent years. And not just for adults.

At Yogi Beans on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, children also benefit from yoga. The private studio offers classes to mothers with infants as young as 6 weeks old.

Co-owner Lauren Chaitoff says "crawlers" to 15-year-olds can sign up for classes. And unlike most activities, it's not competitive.

"You know the same principles you'll find in an adult class you'll find in a Yogi Beans class. There's going to be the poses so that's the physical. So for a parent that wants their child to have a physical activity you're getting that in yoga. And what's great about the physical component of yoga is that it is non-competitive. It's called a yoga practice."

The physical practice includes strengthening, coordination, balance, and flexibility exercises but yoga also teaches mindfulness, focus, concentration and relaxation, which sets it apart from typical after-school activities.

Chaitoff says she simplifies the exercises for children, but the same principles apply for children and adults.

"You know in ballet, you're usually working up to a recital. In judo or martial arts you're trying to achieve a certain belt. In yoga you're just able to be. You're able to practice. It's not about how good your pose is. It's your own personal practice, so that I think is really important. We're really about making children feel good and confident in their bodies and in their ability."

Therapeutic yoga: Small movements, big changes

Posted: at 9:47 pm

The floor at Andrea Soos Yoga Studio is covered with bodies lying on their sides, limbs and heads propped up variously by bolsters and folded fleece blankets. Theres no warrior pose or downward-facing dog. Soos clients make small movements, emphasizing stability and balance over speed and intensity. It looks relaxing, but Soos says its hard work.

Theyre practising a form of therapeutic yoga thats been getting more and more attention in recent years. Its so new that the International Association of Yoga Therapists only developed a set of standards for certification of yoga therapists in July 2012.

There are trends in any industry and I dont want to call this a trend but I do say its the new wave, Soos says. To me, its kind of the polar opposite of hot, fast-paced yoga.

When Soos, 40, started teaching yoga in Hamilton in 1998, she was offering more traditional classes. She switched focus when back pain caused her to consider slowing down and adopting a practice that stressed strengthening through simple movements and proper form rather than strengthening through tension, which can lead to injury.

Yoga has become mainstream, says Soos. I think people have been trading in their gym memberships for yoga studio memberships and the thing is sometimes people strive a little bit too much.

Many of Sooss clients have chronic pain, including rotator cuff injuries, arthritis, back and hip problems, sciatica, fatigue, Parkinsons and more. Soos says she has students who tell her theyre finally sleeping through the night after years of waking due to back pain. Thats because therapeutic yoga pays attention to the way the individual can move rather than trying to twist people into a pose. Its a practice people can age with.

Pat Dermer, a retired dental hygienist, has attended Soos classes for 10 years. Dermer says yoga has always helped ease the musculoskeletal pain she developed while working, but the therapeutic classes are even better. Many of Soos participants say they consider therapeutic yoga a kind of personal health insurance policy. It allows them to tailor the movements to their own limitations something that can be difficult in the beginning.

The biggest challenge is having the individual feel OK, feel comfortable with being different, says Heather Greaves, owner of Body Therapies Yoga Training in Hamilton, where she trains yoga instructors. If someone has sciatica, they cannot do those forward bends. We must offer them a different option.

Greaves says she leads a pre-class chat to address the self-consciousness some students may feel about adapting movements. She says that insecurity can be the hardest part for people getting into therapeutic yoga, but it can also be necessary to make them feel at ease.

Soos agrees that its sometimes tough for people to accept that such small movements can create big change. Theres a widespread belief that, when working out, no pain equals no gain. Thats not the case with therapeutic yoga, says Soos.

Baltimore gym offers paddleboard yoga

Posted: at 9:47 pm

A new fitness trend that combines the swimming pool with yoga is coming to Baltimore next month.

Exercisers at the Maryland Athletic Club in Baltimore's Harbor East got a taste for stand-up paddleboard yoga on Tuesday.

"You're using the board as your mat to do those traditional yoga poses, but we're also going to incorporate some Pilates moves as well, so you're really engaging the core and keeping the heart rate up the whole time," said yoga instructor Jessie Benson.

Paddleboard yoga was first offered by Ultimate Watersports about a year ago in outdoor waters around Baltimore, but now that it's winter, it's moved to an indoor pool at MAC to get the same workout in a different environment.

"Outside, our locations are extremely beautiful and very serene, which is really complimentary to the whole yoga idea. Indoors, we have a much more dynamic atmosphere here at the Maryland Athletic Club. It is a very busy place -- an incredible place to come and get a great workout," said Hal Ashman of Ultimate Watersports.

Because paddleboard yoga is done on an unstable surface, experts said it works different muscles more effectively than traditional yoga.

"It's the same poses, but just taking them to a higher level and having to hold them a little longer with that instability. You'll see a big change in your body and in your balance and overall flexibility," Benson said. "You're really going to engage your core and those abdominal, oblique and back muscles in a new way."

"I think the perception might be that it's just much, much harder to do yoga on a paddleboard, but what we're finding is it's actually a better workout without being that much harder," Ashman said.

Benson said paddleboard yoga is a natural step up for experienced yoga students, but it's easily picked up by beginners, and it's easy on the joints.

"It would be best if you have a little bit of yoga or Pilates background so you know the basic poses, so when I tell you to get in downward-facing dog or to do our sun salutations that you sort of know what to expect. But, certainly, it's open to all fitness abilities, men and women of any age. It's great," she said.

A wonder called Yoga

Posted: at 9:47 pm

India, Feb. 19 -- People ask the question, "Where is the time for yoga in our hectic lives?" You get up at six o'clock, go to the office, work, come back home, take care of the kids, eat and till you go to bed, you have a busy day.

Where is the time for yoga? You have time to eat, to gossip, to work, you have the time to take care of everything but you have no time to take care of yourself?

This attitude comes about because you try to act like a martyr all the time. I have no time for myself. I am giving myself totally to everybody.

What is it that you are giving? Your agitations, irritations, anxieties are being passed on to your children. If you are truly concerned about your children, creating a joyful and loving atmosphere for their growth on a daily basis, moment to moment, is more important.

If you invest, let us say, even 30 minutes a day for yoga, you will enhance your capabilities and you will gain immensely, even in terms of time.

The first thing that will happen is, your sleep quota will come down. Right now if you are sleeping eight hours a day, that means you are just sleeping off one-third of your life. If your body and your mind are more energised and active, your sleep quota will naturally come down.

With a simple process of yoga, your body and mind get more organised. You would see that your level of performance becomes such that whatever you are doing in eight hours, you will very easily be able to do it in three to four hours.

This is simply because, if you observe yourself through the day, suppose we take a video of your whole day without you being aware of it, you will notice how much unnecessary movement and activities are happening in your life. So if one brings yoga into one's life, suddenly the quality of life will be very different. (www.ishafoundation.org)

How to Organise your Thoughts and Make Plans | London Life Coach | Natalie Dee
How to Organise your Thoughts and Make Plans by London Life Coach, Natalie Dee Hello, I #39;m Natalie Dee, natalie-dee.com this video focuses on Organising Your Thoughts and Making Plans Life can be so full of things we need to do, have to do and want to do, that at times it can seem overwhelming. My life coaching clients have spoken again and again about how the amount of things they have on their minds often troubles them at night and makes it difficult for them to "switch off" and fall asleep. The usual suggestion of keeping a pad and pen by your bedside so that you can alleviate your mind of your thoughts by writing them down, thereby reassuring your mind that you have taken action to remember these thoughts for the morning, tends to work well with tasks. Yet, if you have ideas, projects and activities, that require a level of organisation and this is overwhelming your mind, whether during the day or at night, a simple method to help you relax and manage the situation is to create a plan. This could be a plan of actions that need to be taken care of, a timetable of when tasks need to be completed by, detail what can be delegated to who and what you need to do yourself, a description of what the final outcome will include, or what it will look like. These are just some ideas of how to address parts of a project that your mind is working on. By structuring your thoughts, by giving yourself a plan for the things that need to be done, it is highly likely that you will find ...
