Expert witness testifies teaching yoga is a conspiracy

SAN DIEGO From the classroom to the courtroom, teaching yoga in public schools has come under fire in Encinitas and now a judge must decide whether or not yoga is a religion. The lawsuit was filed by the National Center for Law and Policy on behalf of Stephen and Jennifer Sedlock, whose children attend one of the districts nine schools. They contend that Ashtanga yoga is religious in nature, and that opting out costs students physical education time. Calling it camouflage and conspiracy, Dr. Brown describes the practice of yoga. Shes testifying in a case brought against the Encinitas School District by a small group of parents who want to stop the districts new program that offers Ashtanga yoga in place of P.E.

If you asked me whats the most religious form of yoga, I would pick Ashtanga as my number one. Offered Dr. Brown without answering the question asked, which was are all forms of yoga religious? Judge Meyer reminded her she could answer with a yes or no answer, to which she replied after some time, I will say no to that question as phrased.

Presiding Judge John Meyer has the tough task of deciding if a reasonable observer would find the schools curriculum religious. The testimony at times so esoteric the judge interjecting to ponder the meaning.

The issues stems from a gift of $500 thousand dollars to the Encinitas School District by the KP Jois Foundations to fund the health and wellness program.

The foundations stated mission is to spread the teachings of Ashtanga Yoga, which originated with Hinduism. The course curriculum however does not talk about religion and only uses yoga postures and deep breathing. But Dr. Brown testified she believes theres a conspiracy at work trick students into a spiritual practice. Judge Meyer asked for clarification, these Jois trained instructors are just the foot soldier ? Replied Dr. Brown, Its para para submitting to one.. The judge finally cutting her off said, you think they have been planted in the district? Dr. Brown, well, I think that is the case, yeah.

Lenovo readies Yoga 11S convertible for release

Lenovo has revealed that a more powerful version of its Yoga 11 convertible is earmarked for release next month. Essentially four devices in one, the Yoga 11S will run Win8 Pro and be powered by a choice of Intel's 3rd generation Core i processors.

Like last year's Yoga 11, the 11S can be used in four different modes. The laptop and tablet modes pretty much describe themselves, but the 11S can also be placed on its edges in tent mode for watching movies or videos, or with the keyboard flat against the desk in stand mode for flicking through photo albums. Both models have an 11.6-inch IPS capacitive touch display at 1366 x 768 resolution, but the latter now supports 10-finger multitouch action.

Core i3/i5/i7 processor options with integrated HD4000 graphics trump the old model's Nvidia Tegra 3, and there's more system memory on offer up to 8 GB, in fact. Storage also gets a huge boost to either a 128 or 256 GB SSD, and the Yoga 11S runs the full version of Windows 8 instead of RT. Lenovo has also included gesture support that allows users to wave a hand in front of the 720p webcam to advance to the next screen.

All that extra power and functionality does come at the expense of battery life, though. The Yoga 11 boasted a 13-hour battery life, but that's knocked down to six hours in the new version.

The 11S is just a tad chunkier at 0.67 inches (17 mm) thin, and a little heavier at 3.1 lb (1.4 kg). One USB 2.0 port and one USB 3.0, a HDMI port, a 2-in-1 card reader, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, and an AccuType keyboard complete the specs.

The IdeaPad Yoga 11S is currently up for pre-order at Lenovo's online shop, and at Best Buy. Available from June 23 in a silver or orange soft-touch finish, prices start at US$799.99, and run right up to $1,349.99.

Do yoga and pilates count as cardio?

The question: Do the yoga and pilates classes I do count as cardio? In some classes I really feel my heart pumping.

The answer: Let's first clarify how we are using the word cardio. For the sake of simplicity, fitness professionals usually divide training into threee categories: cardio, strength and flexibility. Cardio activities are understood as activities like biking or walking, whereas flexibility training is understood as activities like stretching and yoga. In reality, activities exist on a continuum.

Most activities, except for high-intensity exercises lasting less than two minutes, are considered cardiovascular since they use oxygen as fuel. Some activities just fall farther along the continuum, offering more of a cardiovascular challenge than others.

The cardiovascular demands placed on the body depend on the type of activity you are doing and the intensity and duration it is done for. So, all yoga counts as cardio, since you are using oxygen as fuel, but walking and running tend to put progressively more cardiovascular demands on the body then a yoga class.

That said, if you place a heart-rate monitor on a slow walker versus a power-yoga participant, the yoga participant may be maintaining a higher heart rate for longer, and therefore stressing their cardiovascular system more.

I suggest that you try wearing a heart rate monitor to your next yoga class. Monitor if your heart rate rises to 60 to 85 per cent of you max, and if so, for how long. Different types of yoga will elicit different results.

Aim to do low-intensity movement that adds up to 60 minutes of movement per day. Many yoga classes will fall under this type of cardio activity. A great way to ensure you are moving enough is to buy a pedometer and aim to accumulate 10,000 steps per day.

In addition, you should do three weekly workouts in which you maintain a heart rate of 60 to 85 per cent of your max for 20 to 30 minutes. Some power-yoga classes may fall under this type of cardio activity.

Trainer's tip: If your yoga class doesnt help you maintain an elevated heart rate for 30 minutes, don't worry. When doing yoga, dont fixate on getting enough cardio; it offers other equally important health benefits such as increased strength, mobility, flexibility and relaxation.

Yoga with Dementia: Tom Wojehowski's Story

Have you ever tried yoga? Just about anyone who can breathe can practice yoga to some extent and reap its many benefits. We'll prove it. In this series, U.S. News talks with people who are changing the face of yoga.

Tom Wojehowski, 62, has a wife, two sons, six grandchildren, a German shepherd puppy and Alzheimer's disease. The signs started showing a few years ago when he began repeating himself, and in November 2010, a neurologist diagnosed Wojehowski with mild cognitive impairment. Since then, it's progressed to early dementia.

Wojehowski had to leave his job because of the dementia, but has kept busy at his home in Cornwall, N.Y. by doing yardwork, preparing to move houses and going on daily walks with his wife, Suzanne. Exercise is good for the brain, he was told, so he tacked another activity to his list: yoga.

With a few words from Suzanne, Wojehowski shares his yoga experience. Responses have been edited.

How did you get into yoga?

TW: I had heard that any type of exercise is good for dementia. And because I had to leave work, I was looking for other things to do. So I tried it out, and I enjoyed it. I started out with a DVD, and then went to the Mid-Hudson School of Yoga trial classes, and the rest is history. I was going four or five times a week.

How has yoga affected your life?

TW: There would be times when I'd say, "You know, I really don't feel like going to yoga today," but I would go anyway. When I came home, I would always tell my wife, "I'm glad I went, because it was great." One of the slogans on the walls at the school is "body, mind and spirit," and that's what it does. It puts your mind and spirit in a different place. Every time I went, I felt refreshed and energized. When I walked out of the place, I was always so glad I went.

SW: Also, one of the important things with dementia is being comfortable talking to other people, and being able to communicate and putting yourself in a position where you're actually out - not pulling yourself back from people. This also helped Tom in that respect, because he would interact with people in class. People tend to pull back when they have a form of dementia.
