The best wearables, health and fitness tech of CES 2021 – Gadgets & Wearables

Posted: January 14, 2021 at 4:54 pm

CES 2021shuts its doors for another year today. This is the first time in its 54 year history the gathering adopted a virtual-only format.

It was necessary, of course, because of the current coronavirus global pandemic. And better than cancelling the event altogether, most would agree.

CES stands for the Consumer Electronics Show. It has been the launching ground for many thousands of products since it first took place in 1967, including some that have changed our lives.

Essential reading:Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

The gathering is typically held across a2.75 million-square-foot convention. In 2020 it hosted some4,500 exhibiting companies, including manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware and content. This was accompanied by a conference program featuring more than 1,000 speakers.

But in 2021 it is different and we definitely didnt see the scenes from the picture above. The event has adopted a all-digital format. This means you can follow it from your home rather than traveling to Las Vegas.

In a few hours the virtual doors will shot. But the on-online digital venue will remain open for those that have registered until February 15th. That should give them ample time to engage with exhibitors and replay programming.

Most tech events in 2020 have gone down the virtual route or been cancelled. The Mobile World Congress 2020 in Barcelona was not held, and Apple held an online version of its Worldwide Developer Conference in June. Londons Wearable Tech show did take place in early March but it was a much smaller affair than usually. IFA 2020 in Berlinadopted a virtual event combined with some live gatherings.

It is unfortunate, but understandable considering the circumstances, that events are changing format. Lets hope that things return to normal very soon.

Wearable tech typically makes a strong showing at CES. In 2020 we saw the launch of Huamis Amazfit Bip S and T-rex, the unveiling of Muse S, Withings Scanwatch, Suunto 7, UrgoNightband, Diesel On Fadelite, NURVV Run, Skagen Falster 3, Mobvoi Ticpods Pro 2 and much more.

Garmin is there, as well as Huami, Samsung, Fossil and Omron. However a lot of the big names are not attending. This includes Fitbit, Polar, Huawei, Mobvoi, Withings, Suunto and the usual absentee Apple.

What follows are the wearables and health tech at CES that piqued our interest in 2021.

AirPop wants to make masks we are all meant to wear a bit smarter. In addition to a quality filter, their masks come equipped with tech that allow it to capture breathing-related health data.

The gizmo works in conjunction with a smartphone app. The AI in the software collates the information on internal respiration with outside air quality and location. Whats more the app will let you know when it is time to change the filter.AirPop Active+ availability starts in the US and Canada later this month.

A regular at this event, Scosche has announced Rhythm+ 2.0. This is an updated version of the original device launched in 2014.

Just like the first, the second generation allows you to monitor your heart rate from your upper forearm, biceps or triceps. The added value this time around is much longer battery life and upgraded sensors. Other than that, you still get the IP68 water resistance along with Dual ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart connectivity.

This one was originally announced a few months ago. But Honor used CES 2021 to announce global availability. The novelty of the device is its huge screen. Coming in at 1.47 inches it blurs the line between fitness trackers and smartwatches.

Honor is keeping the price right down and will charge around $35 and $45 when the wearable becomes available. That is pretty impressive considering the fitness band comes with all the usual sensors, along with blood oxygen saturation.

Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR comes with an innovative 1.09-inch always-on e-ink display. Youll be able to make it your own with a choice of watch faces. Theres a 38mm and 42mm case size to choose from, both of which are 3ATM water-resistant. Inside is a GPS chip, plus all the fitness smarts youd expect from a 2021 timepiece.

Battery life is an excellent 2 weeks between charges. The watch goes on sale January 26th in the US, starting at $195.

We have received a couple of more WearOS Gen 5E iterations. This includes the Michael Kors Access Gen 5E Darci and Gen 5E MKGO.

These are watches that essentially pack Gen 5 specs in a Gen 2 and 3 design. We saw a bunch of them in October. This means you get the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor, along with GPS, NFC and the usual gamut of fitness smarts.

The main difference between the two watches is in design. Darci is clearly meant for women while the MKGO is a unisex device. The due has 1.19-inch OLED display, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of onboard storage, a 300mAh battery, and 5ATM water-resistance.

Darci will set you back $350 and the Access MKGO $250. Availability in the US starts this spring.

Want to stick to your New Years fitness resolutions? Heres how: – WTTV CBS4Indy

Posted: at 4:54 pm

INDIANAPOLIS Physical health and fitness is annually one of the top resolutions for the new year.

Unfortunately, research shows about 80% of people will give up on their resolutions by the end of February. To help beat the burnout we talked to two experts, a clinical dietician and an exercise physiologist about the things people can do to keep up with their resolutions for the long haul.

One of the first lessons according to IU Health Clinical Dietician Garret Swisher is that its important to make your goals realistic and achievable. Swisher says generally, a person can get more benefits out of their resolutions if they start with smaller achievable goals in the beginning, then build their way up as they go.

Instead of saying, hey I want to lose 15 pounds, focus on healthy habits that you can realistically actually do. [Tell yourself] hey, Im going to eat more at home, or focus on delegating more time to my diet and actually preparing meals. Maybe you want to eat more as a family. Something other than focusing on weight loss per say is usually going to be more achievable, Swisher said.

Another roadblock people run into on their fitness journey is expecting results to come right away. Often the lack of results can discourage people and lead them to giving up all together.

Exercise physiologist Shaylin Pachciarz says focusing on the process more so than the results is generally better for sustaining goals. She adds that placing time limits on yourself, especially unrealistic ones (like losing 30 pounds in 30 days) can be detrimental.

Go into it knowing you need to be patient, results take time. If you feel like youve gotten results or plateaued, that may be an opportunity you could say to change up your routine or increase your repetitions or your time. Your body is so good at adapting. Usually if youre plateauing, you need to change something, she said.

Bottom line, both say real change takes time. Persistence and consistency is key. They also add that if you dwell to long on setbacks (which always happen) it makes it harder to recover and continue on with your goals.

Swisher also says when it comes to diet, the one thing you can do that will make the biggest impact is to spend more time preparing meals yourself.

Last week was the first full week of January and for most of us the first full week for our New Years resolutions.

So how did you do? Did you do well or not so well? If you did well, thats amazing! Well done you. If you didnt do well ... so what?

We are now in a new week, number two of 52, so whether last week went well or badly it was only a small piece of the jigsaw.

You have plenty of time to achieve your goals and one bad week doesnt mean failure. Consistency is everything and it is about finishing the month with more good weeks than bad ones.

Use each week to learn. What did you do well? What worked for you? What didnt work so well? What needs a little more work?

Keep doing that each week and over time you will build a lifestyle you can sustain for the rest of your life. Its a process, not a quick fix, and it needs to work for you.

Orangetheory Fitness launches 100th virtual studio in Canada on the strength of its Orangetheory Live platform – Canada NewsWire

Posted: at 4:53 pm

Orangetheory Live brings real-time coaching from a local, certified coach to an intimate group setting. Using the new platform, coaches offer real-time feedback and motivation, akin to a private personal training session, with the added benefit of connecting members to their local studio community before, during and after each workout.

As the pandemic continues to impact Canada, many businesses have been forced to reclose, including nearly all Orangetheory locations across the country. But that hasn't stopped the brand from pivoting and innovating to keep up with changing member needs.

"We recognized early on in the pandemic that we would need to innovate to keep our members active and engaged," says Blake MacDonald, President, OTF Canada. "While there are a multitude of at-home workouts available to Canadians, both free and paid, every one of these offerings fail to deliver on the most critical component of a successful fitness routine the accountability and motivation that can only be delivered by a live local coach. Our goal is to deliver world-class interactive, coach-led training to our members, regardless of the government timeline to re-open studios. It took a herculean effort from our team to expedite the launch, and we're excited to see our studios and members are quickly adopting and loving the new technology."

In October 2019, the international chain reached a major brand milestone by opening its 100th studio in Canada. This was a testament to Canadians' passion for the workout a unique trifecta of science, coaching and technology. While a strong growth mindset was in place, by March 2020, Orangetheory made the hard decision to shut its doors to help flatten the COVID-19 curve and was the first national fitness studio to do so.

The brand began rollout of the new platform in October 2020, starting with its Quebec studios. As of today, 95 per cent of Canadian studios have started offering Orangetheory Live, making it available in all eight provinces where the brand currently operates.

"Now more than ever, it's critical that Canadians invest in their health and fitness and are not deterred by the temporary closures of fitness facilities," MacDonald adds. "Exercise is proven to be an integral component in supporting positive physical and mental health. We want to do our part by providing Canadians an outlet where they can focus on themselves during these unprecedented times and Orangetheory Live is our solution to that problem."

More information about Orangetheory Fitness is available at http://www.orangetheoryfitness.com.

About Orangetheory Fitness Orangetheory Fitness is a scientifically designed, one-of-a-kind, group personal training workout broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training. Backed by the science of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), Orangetheory's heart-rate-monitored workouts are designed to get participants within the target-training zone of 84 per cent to 91 per cent of their max heart rate, which stimulates metabolism and increases energy. Led by highly skilled coaches, each Orangetheory Fitness workout incorporates endurance, strength and power elements through both their Orangetheory workout at-home or through a variety of equipment including treadmills, rowing machines, TRX suspension training and free weights in their physical locations. The result is more energy, visible toning and the 'Orange Effect' where participants keep burning calories for up to 36 hours post-workout (the Orangetheory Fitness 'afterburn') for an average of 500+ total calories burned per every 60-minute workout.

From remote working to better health programs, these are the workforce trends in 2021 – WXYZ

Posted: at 4:53 pm

(WXYZ) During the height of the pandemic, the unemployment rate for southeast Michigan approached nearly 25%.

While many of those jobs have come back, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the unemployment rate for the Detroit-Dearborn-Warren metro area is still at nearly 9%.

The personal finance website WalletHub released a survey highlighting the strongest local job markets in the U.S., comparing more than 180 cities across 32 key metrics.

According to Robert Half & Associates, 51% of companies plan to expand in 2021, especially in the legal, technology and creative marketing sectors.

Keith Marchiando used to commute from Michigan to New York for his job, but he found a great new opportunity. He's an executive with a Keego Harbor biotech company. He said when deciding on his next opportunity, it wasn't just a company's ability to operate remotely, but the ability to operate well.

"Everybody is doing it, but does the company have the tools, and has it modified its culture enough to be able to allow people to work effectively from home?" he asked.

Carrie Schochet of Purple Squirrel Advisors says that's just one question shaping the workforce trends in 2021. She said employees are placing a high priority on physical safety and emotional security.

"Employees overall are really focused on and wanting to know that they're cared for as a total person, versus just the work product that they're going to produce," she said.

That has companies beefing up wellness initiatives and employee assistance programs, both to care for current employees and to attract new ones.

Even with the vaccine rollout underway, don't expect virtual working to disappear overnight. Many believe schedules will be more flexible.

Google may have come to that realization. The company plans to keep 200,000 full-time and contract employees working remotely until at least July of this year, and that opens up new opportunities for workers here in Michigan to work remotely or let Michigan natives bring those big salaries here.

The workplace trends for women are mixed. More women than men are expected to drop out of the workforce.

It's all part of the pandemic challenges women face around childcare, work-life management and inequality.

But, even in the face of those challenges, Allbright said more than 60% of women are considering a complete career change, and 1 in 4 are launching a new venture, with the most popular being publishing and health and fitness.
