Yoga Pod, 1750 29th St., Boulder, 303-444-4232, yogapodcommunity.com/boulder
Instructor: Rachel Gasner, of Boulder, who has been doing yoga for eight years. She was certified in vinyasa and Yoga Sculpt at CorePower in 2010. She is also certified in hot vinyasa.
What is the workout? Yoga Tone combines light hand-weights and toning with yoga postures, to improve functional fitness.
What's different? Unlike other classes that combine yoga with weights, this is not just a traditional vinyasa flow with weights in your hands. The first 15 minutes and last 15 minutes of class were more traditional yoga, and the middle was fitness, strength-building moves (squats, biceps curls, push-ups, plyometrics, lunges), with some yoga-influenced postures mixed in.
Because of the fitness emphasis, this class tends to attract athletes and "non-yogis," but it is also popular with yogis who want to build strength without having to go to a separate gym.
"Nowadays, people often have to choose between a gym membership and a yoga membership," Gasner says. "This is a beautiful way for us to include, not only all of the different styles of yoga that we have at the Pod, but also a fitness-structured class that's very different than a yoga class."
In addition, the class is set up to allow the teacher and students a lot of flexibility with how they modify and adjust the class, based on that day's needs. Some yoga classes are pretty rigid about that kind of thing.
Cost: A one-time drop-in is $17, but the Yoga Pod does have an extremely low intro rate for a Boulder yoga studio: $40 for unlimited yoga for the month.
Level: This is a level-two class, according to the website, but Gasner says you could do it if you're new to yoga -- just heed the modifications. Although the class itself is easy to follow, it's super intense. It was one of the hardest yoga classes I've done.
Still, Gasner does a good job of encouraging you to take it at your own pace and level. One participant took child's pose for half the class. Participants were of all ages and yoga abilities, too -- to a degree that truly surprised me; this was really one of the most diverse yoga groups I've seen in Boulder.

Miracle of Yoga Practices Community in a New Blog
Posted: at 3:52 am
GOLDEN, CO--(Marketwired - Aug 14, 2013) - Miracle of Yoga announces that it has begun a new blog, called "One World: Interview with Yogis" to connect with other teachers and students of yoga. Whether the blog reader is a novice or can complete advanced yoga sequences, everyone is welcome to join in.
Each blog will focus on one yogi, in an interview-style conversation with questions and answers. The person will reveal his or her journey to yoga, what the motivating factors are, and some of the biggest challenges in practicing that discipline.
The purpose of the blog is to expand the community of those who practice and love yoga. This will make the idea of yoga therapy a community experience and benefit, not simply belonging to the individual.
A new blog will be posted every Sunday. They will be connected to the studio's existing blog but with a wider scope and people-oriented subject matter.
There is always some connectivity and community among those who practice yoga in the same studio. But the connections between studios or among people who practice on their own are slim. Christian Leeby, owner of Miracle of Yoga, wants to change that by beginning conversations with a myriad of people who enjoy yoga.
"What we really want," says Leeby from his local studio, "is to inspire people to connect and talk about their experiences. Over time, the column will represent the diversity of the global family practicing and benefiting from yoga."
The learning experience is key, especially for people just beginning the practice of yoga. They will read the stories, struggles, and triumphs of people who have practiced the discipline for years. The long-time yogis who can perform advanced yoga sequences will have a platform for sharing their physical and spiritual lessons.
At the same time, new students of yoga will be able to share their stories to inspire others.
Readers are able to post questions or comments and the yogi can respond. This is the "conversation" portion, allowing a healthy dialogue and exchange of ideas. As the conversations occur, the community of those who love yoga begins to take shape.

Yoga Brings New Competition to the Market

Depending on the company, the products are either yoga pants, studio pants, or just workout pants. The designs are all similar, but the brands are very different. lululemon athletica (NASDAQ: LULU) controls the biggest chunk of the U.S. market, with annual sales topping $1.4 billion. The success of the company has inspired imitation from almost every quarter of the retail industry. While some of the more established brands like Nike and Under Armour (NYSE: UA) have obviously made a move on the market, there are some interesting offerings from other retailers as well.
Growing the market Analysts' estimates for growth in yoga participation put annual compound growth at more than 20% since 2004. Revenue has increased as well, and annual revenue for the industry is estimated at close to $6 billion. Many of those participants are new to the sport, and a study from Yoga Journal found that about 45% of Americans who participate in yoga consider themselves beginners.
Those new participants are, in part, following the broader market. Older surveys found that as the economy suffered, so did the yoga market. The business thrives on free time and extra cash; as the market contracts, those dry up. As the market has recovered, business has picked back up and competitors have been quick to jump on the bandwagon.
Growing competition Yoga revenue has generated so much interest in part due to the foothold that yoga offers businesses in the women's athletic market. Companies like Under Armour have developed ambitious plans to grow business generated from sales to women. The company is planning to grow revenue in this sector by 96% by 2016.
Other brands, including Gap's (NYSE: GPS) Athleta line, are also making inroads. The brand started out as a Lululemon shadow, but has come into its own. Last year, a study found that Athleta had built 13 of its 22 locations within a mile of existing Lululemon stores. Since that time, Athleta has expanded rapidly, and now the business has 35 locations.
The success of Athleta -- Gap has claimed that it has higher productivity than the company's core brands -- has led other non-athletic companies to test the yoga waters. The newest brand on the block is Fifth & Pacific's (NYSE: FNP) Juicy Couture. Well, it's actually not on the block yet.
Juicy joins the hunt The tracksuit brand has plans to join the yoga fashion business in 2014 as part of a plan to revitalize the brand's image. The "lifestyle collection" is going to start with the yoga line, but will eventually expand into swimwear, watches, and footwear -- no, it's fine, I don't know what yoga footwear is, either. The move from tracksuits to yogawear is just part of a bigger brand identity change from Juicy, but anything the company can do to improve sales would be welcome. Last quarter, comparable sales slipped 4% compared to the same period last year.
Of the four brands, Athleta would be my pick for growth, Lululemon for long-term strength, and Juicy Couture for probably-not-going-to-do-great. The business has a lot of things going for it, but I think it's better off with some of the other plans it has in place, like its future lingerie line.
