Brooke Burke Shares Her Top Wellness Tips for Relaxing and Feeling Her Best – Prevention.com

Posted: December 1, 2021 at 1:44 am

At 50-years-old, Brooke Burke recognizes the importance of prioritizing mental health and wellbeing. These days with a fitness program (including an app that is chock full of guided workouts and meditations), shes easing into a more open world post (or during) COVID-19. Her top takeaway from the past 18-plus months? The importance of self-care.

I think its been a real conscious shift thats been necessary, to be honest, she says of the ways in which the pandemic has changed the pace of the world, forcing us all to slow down. We still have to figure out how to balance that stress and stress of that togetherness again.

Burke, a certified breathwork teacher, a paid spokesperson for supplement brand Tru Niagen, creator of wellness app meets fitness program Brooke Burke Body (BB Body), and mother of four, leans heavily on her self-care ritual to manage stress.

My favorite part is taking five minutes in the morning to set yourself up, to crush your day, to balance stress. Taking a little me time, she says. With her new holiday program, Burke is emphasizing mindfulness, even sharing some meditative playlists to just to kind of go inward and go inside and take a moment for yourself. Thats a big part of mindful fitness for me, and everything that we do on my app, is connecting those dots body, spirit, soul, she tells prevention.com. We have to take time for ourselves.

The one thing, besides meditation, that she credits with keeping her mind clear during these stressful times? A simple soak.

I create home spas, which is...epsom salts and flowers from the garden. I light a candle, I know how to check out of my world on a stressful day and sort of reset. So I think for women thats a really really important part of just managing all of the things that we do.

She doesnt waste her time with luxe, overly produced bath salts, either. Instead she opts for simple over-the-counter Epsom salts. I buy basic generic inexpensive Epsom salt, its the same stuff. And then Ill put lavender drops or eucalyptus drops in my bath, Ill light my favorite candles.

Pure Eucalyptus Oil USDA Organic Essential Oils

$11.95

Dermatologists and physical therapists have long lauded Epsom salts for their restorative properties. While Epsom salt is a type of salt, its very different from the stuff you sprinkle into your soup. The salt, scientifically referred to as magnesium sulfate, is known for its healing properties. When dissolved into a bath, it can help relax muscles and gently exfoliate the skin, Ana Cristina Laureano, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Scherl Dermatology in New Jersey, previously told Prevention.

At the end of the day, Burke says these Epsom soaks (which she does weekly), can really change the way you go about your day. Its about music lighting, the warmth, and the recovery of Epsom salt, and you know Epsom salt will also reset your mood, she says. Im a big believer in that reset.

Im a big believer in that reset.

And it's clearly working for Burke. We can't wait to add a weekly soak to our self-care routine rotation.

The 20 Best K-Pop Albums of 2021 – PopMatters

Posted: at 1:44 am

K-pop is a very busy niche to keep up with as there are seemingly countless active groups and soloists, and some even put out more than one EP or LP per year. The odds that a year will go by without good music in K-pop are very low. With so many releases, there has to be somethingfor everyones taste.

From experimentation that entices the interest of casual listeners to formulaic repetition that K-pop fans love, 2021 was a year with a lot of satisfying K-pop. Among all that talent, its only right that our list of Best K-pop albums (which includes EPs and LPs) features no less than 20 works by K-pop idols and a few R&B or indie artists that are changing the landscape for pop as well.

SHINees Lee Taemin may have gone into an artistic hiatus (due to his compulsory military enlistment), but he left listeners good music to enjoy until hes back. Advice is less impressive than Taemins previous solo works, but its still a great example of the unique finesse the singer and dancer brings to K-pop. Taemin proves his versatility in tracks like the doo-wop, R&B Strings, and the synthpop Sad Kids; and his qualities as an entertainer in Advice.

When a songwriter and music producer is also a recording artist, theres always a song that they cant decide if they pitch it to another artist or keep for themselves. For example, the classy Unnatural, recorded by the group WJSN, was penned by a songwriter and music producer who also releases her own music: Song Heejin. But judging by her solo debut, Soda, Song has saved some goodies for herself too.

For example, tracks like Question Mark and Get Outta My wouldve also sounded amazing if recorded by a girl group such as MAMAMOO or Red Velvet, respectively. But we can only be happy that Song Heejin recorded them and released Soda. Shes really good singing soft contemporary R&B (Dirt), as well as in upbeat tracks (Dancing in the Moonlight). Tylenol is the apex of the songs experimentation. And the funky, smooth homonym track is one of the most refreshing summer releases of 2021.As a songwriter and as a recording artist, Song Heejin is a name to keep an eye on.

Bambi, a solo work by the EXO member Baekhyun, is a sultry and elegant set of R&B and neo-soul songs. Baekhyuns vocal range almost steals the spotlight from the beautiful melodies. The falsettos in Bambi and All I Got will give you goosebumps. Baekhyuns sentimentality is on the edge in Cry for Love: Every time that I cry / My tears dont ever dry, he sings. Baekhyun reaches great heights with his voice in Bambi; but in spite of how intense these songs are, theyre still smooth and provide a relaxing feel. Its a short EP, yet its rich with emotions and executed to perfection.

The sixth album by singer and songwriter Younha, End Theory, is an emotional piece of art. Highlight is, indeed, one of the highest points of End Theory, and Stardust is a dreamy pop ballad that can make you feel as if youre floating adrift in the universe. The new-age-inspired song Here is so majestical that it deserves to be experienced at an opera theatre or ballet. Younhas soft, high-pitched vocals imprint the right emotion that each composition deserves, making End Theory a graceful experience.

Sometimes an introduction to a song is so good that its a waste that it isnt a full track. When that happens, the following songs must keep the listener just as interested. Thats the case in Border: Carnival, the second EP by the boy group ENHYPEN. Intro: The Invitation is a gloomy alt-rock / new wave track that sets the scene for the trip ENHYPEN takes on a disturbing yet exciting trip, with few moments to breathe in and relax (like the cute Not for Sale).

Border: Carnival is, most of the time, a seductive fusion of R&B, dance, moombahton, and reggaeton. The tracks in between the first and last dont have the same dark edge as the bookenders. Still, its music that grabs you by the neck and drags you to deeper depths: the emotional turmoil in Drunk-Dazed, the burning desire in Fever, the warmth from falling in love in Not for Sale.

Trap beats and rock guitars combine in the production of Mixed Up. It creates contrast with the airy Outro: Wormhole, whose lyrics are metaphorical of ENHYPENs journey through different states of consciousness. Though its the last track, the lyrics hint at new beginnings: And when we wake at this tunnels end / What vision awaits?

Coping with Seasonal Affective Disorder During Another Pandemic Winter – Healthline

Posted: at 1:44 am

As the days get darker and temperatures dip in most areas of the country, many Americans are beginning to feel the effects of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.

SAD is a type of depression that typically comes on in the fall and winter months. It leads to mood changes and other symptoms of depression.

Its an annual decrease in mood and can lead to feeling lethargic, difficulty sleeping, poor appetite, and weight loss explained Adam Borland, PsyD, a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic. Some people experience agitation and anxiety, and it really stems from the change in weather, the lack of sunlight, and the cold dreariness in certain areas of the country.

SAD is quite common. The National Institute of Mental Health reports millions of Americans have SAD, though many might not know they have it.

Experts say, as we approach another pandemic winter, seasonal affective disorder is once again being compounded by COVID-19 anxiety for many Americans.

If were already feeling down, then we add to it the prospect of another winter in which [COVID-19] is still an issue, thats a recipe for depressive episodes and for heightened anxiety and panic, Borland said.

Most Americans are still reeling from the events of the past year and a half. The staggering death toll of more than 773,000 people has left countless grieving families in its wake.

Theres also the lasting effects of social isolation, financial upheaval, and the collective stress of being on edge for so long.

And while the United States is in a much better position than last winter with the COVID-19 vaccine and current rollout of booster shots, the uncertainty of where the pandemic is heading can make the mental anguish seem never-ending.

Especially with the ambiguity of where we are now as a society, it can be hard to know where we have to continue to be cautious as compared to where we can be more at ease than we were last winter, said Jessica Stern, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at NYU Langone Health.

In a vicious cycle, SAD can make it even more difficult to cope with COVID-19 anxiety.

Seasonal affective disorder can lead to a sluggishness or lowness that can even further decrease motivation to engage in healthy habits, like eating healthy, staying active, and managing stress, Stern said.

If youre feeling the double whammy of seasonal affective disorder and pandemic anxiety, experts recommend the following coping mechanisms that can help ease symptoms of both.

Having some semblance of a daily routine is very important, especially when things seem overwhelming, Borland said.

What I mean by that is having small, achievable goals to work toward each day, he explained. So for someone who, as soon as they open their eyes in the morning, they start to feel overwhelmed by all the demands on them, identifying those small goals and crossing them off their list can make a big difference.

These goals can be as simple as taking 10 minutes out of every morning for deep breathing and stretching.

Thats not a huge goal, but its something to cross off the list, Borland explained. So you attended to yourself for 10 minutes, and now youre a bit more charged to start the day.

Phototherapy, or light therapy, is a recommended treatment for seasonal affective disorder. It involves sitting or working near a light therapy box, which mimics natural outdoor light.

Borland encourages his patients get a little creative with it.

I have one patient who uses their light therapy and combines it with listening to some relaxing music, and they visualize that theyre at the beach, he said.

Studies show that physical activity can improve mental health and overall well-being.

As I tell my patients, exercise doesnt have to mean going to the gym or taking a fitness class, Borland said. Its really just any type of physical activity that you can get, [like] taking a walk, doing some exercise at home, using a quick YouTube workout video those all count.

Surround yourself (in-person or virtually) by people who support you, inspire you, or are just fun to talk to, Stern said.

If youre feeling stressed or overwhelmed, lean on that social support system to help you get through tough times.

Probably one of the most important coping tools is not keeping things bottled up, but sharing with your loved ones how youre feeling, Borland said.

A proven way to help ease symptoms of depression and anxiety, mindfulness meditation encourages people to slow down their thoughts and breathe deeply.

What that does is really help us focus on the present moment, Borland explained. We are so good at thinking about the past and worrying about the future, that we often miss the present moments.

If you have trouble controlling your thoughts and getting into a meditation practice, Borland recommended starting with small goals.

The expectation is not that you turn your brain off, but I like to think of it in terms of volume, he said. So if you feel like your brain is at a nine or a 10, in terms of volume the expectation is that doing some deep breathing is just going to turn it down a little.

The expectation is not that youre going to go from a nine to a one. And if thats the expectation, thats where people get frustrated, he added.

Having plans for enjoyable activities can help ease day-to-day stresses.

While COVID-19 has limited options over the last year and a half whether thats because of fears of becoming sick or financial strain even making small plans can be helpful.

Plan fun activities for yourself, regardless of how small they may seem to you, Stern suggested. This could include doing a wine tasting from home, creating a weekly movie and dinner night, or building a fort in your living room.

Theres a reason it feels so good to rewatch your favorite sitcoms or revisit beloved holiday movies each year.

Movies, TV shows, stand-up comedy segments that you know and love can bring a sense of comfort and familiarity, Stern said. Have a few of your favorites on standby whether that means holiday classics that you love or a TV series you can binge.

You can even pair it with your favorite recipe or takeout food and amp up the nostalgia, she suggested.

Online learning and the future of education | Education – Gulf News

Posted: November 14, 2021 at 1:50 am

Virtual event by UK-based portal to highlight remote learning benefits for Gulf students

My Online Schooling is a virtual portal founded in the UK with the aim to improve educational possibilities for the youth. Recognising the fact that pupils learn in different ways, the team at My Online Schooling chose an alternative pathway to the traditional one-size-fits-all approach.

Providing a full-time British education online to children of school age, My Online Schooling works on the belief system that all young people deserve access to a quality education.

My Online Schooling opened doors for pupils worldwide to study the highly regarded English National Curriculum, as well as to receive International GCSE and A-Level qualifications to show for the same.

In keeping with its initiative to further reach to students worldwide and highlight the importance of online learning for the future of education itself, My Online Schooling will now anchor a virtual event titled Accessing British Education in the Gulf Region, to be hostedthis Thursday, November 11, at 6pm, Dubai time.

- Tom Crombie, Founder and CEO, My Online Schooling

The virtual event will host Tom Crombie, Founder and CEO, My Online Schooling, among other select panelists from the sector, and will look at education as a whole in the Gulf, why the UK curriculum is revered, and the different options and ways that parents can harness technology and bring education to their children.

Crombie, a former teacher and school leader, studied at the University of Glasgow and latterly, the University of Edinburgh where he embarked on his PGDE in Primary Education. His teaching career started in Scotland, before embarking on a five-year adventure to live and work in New Zealand.

Crombie spent fiveyears at ACG Sunderland in Auckland as a teacher and Curriculum Leader where his passion for using innovative technology in the classroom began. Hereturned to the UK in 2016 and embarked on the project to establish My Online Schooling with a view to providing an online internationally accessible, inclusive, and innovative education to young people across the globe

The event will also spotlight the current state of education in the GCC, online education/schooling, how the public shifted their mind to online schooling post pandemic, and the future of education.

In an exclusive interview in the lead-up to the event, Crombie highlights some critical facets about the virtual event as well as pertinent points on the relevance of online education as remote access became a thing with the rise of Covid, and how remote learning isslowly comingto being viewed as the new normal for the education sector in the wake of the pandemic.

The event is called Accessing British Education in the Gulf Region. We have been delivering the British curriculum online to primary and secondary pupils for over fiveyears now. However, post-pandemic, families are considering different options for their children's education.

Online learning is going to play a pivotal part in the future of education and My Online Schooling brings together a community of learners from all corners of the globe in one innovative and inclusive school. We have a thriving community of students from the Middle East and we look forward to discussing the power of online learning in accessing British education from the region.

We currently have hundreds of students in the Middle East with the majority residing in the UAE. In early 2022 we will be the first British international online to be based in Dubai and we are excited to create more opportunities for students in the region to join our Middle East school. We are one of the world's leading online schools and we deliver the full British curriculum to primary and secondary aged pupils across the globe. Our Wellbeing and Additional Support Needs departments support any student to access our full curriculum, irrespective of their need.

We will discuss the benefits of a British education and the power of online schooling to enable students to access an innovative education of excellence. We will be talking about the changes in education post-pandemic and the role that digital innovation will have in 21st century education. We will also cover the global desire for blended learning amongst international schools and the benefits of a hybrid model of in person and online education. We will also talk about the rise of online education in the Middle East and the level of interest in British education in the region.

USM’s School of Professional Nursing Practice Offers a Better Way to Pay for College with the Payne Scholarship – Southern Miss Now

Posted: at 1:50 am

Fri, 11/12/2021 - 10:56am | By: Josh Stricklin

The University of Southern Mississippis School of Professional Nursing Practice has made paying for tuition for the Nursing RN-BSN program easier with the Payne Scholarship. Any RN-BSN student who has completed this short list of requirements may apply for one of the seven awards:

This scholarship is part of the programs efforts to help nurses continue their education by helping with the finances. As Dr. Elizabeth Holman, RN-BSN Coordinator and Assistant Teaching Professor, says, This scholarship helps to offset tuition to our Mississippi residents so that they are eligible for leadership positions or help to prepare them for graduate school with minimal cost to the student.

The scholarship offers more than just tuition assistance. With a $50,000 pool, the scholarship impacts both tuition and books for the seven students who are selected, covering $2,100 per student each semester for tuition, and allowing for an extra $280 towards the cost of books for the classes.

The Payne Scholarship makes finishing a nursing degree online even easier, says Dr. Tom Hutchinson, Dean of Online Learning and Enrollment. This scholarship relieves much of the financial responsibility from tuition and books, allowing students to focus on developing leadership skills necessary to thrive in the medical environment.

The recipients of this scholarship for the fall 2021 semester include:

The Nursing BSN is designed to help nurses do more with their careers. This program admits students during the fall, spring and summer semesters, and with the Payne Scholarship opportunity, nurses can finish school with the ability to do more in the medical community. Nurses looking to grow their knowledge and skills should visit the Nursing page.

Inspiring the next generation of meteorologists with more interactive, hands-on lessons – FirstCoastNews.com WTLV-WJXX

Posted: at 1:50 am

If your weather-savvy student is interested in meteorology at an early age, there's now an option for them to dip their toes in the field before college.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Calculus, chemistry, biology - courses you may remember taking in high school or maybe your student is currently enrolled in. But what about meteorology?

"The main curriculum covers the basics," Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle School Principal Chris Koek said.

The Sunshine State is surrounded by water and is faced with many weather-related challenges and hazards year round. However, meteorology is just not something the state curriculum requires students to learn about in detail.

"It's hard to get the kids engaged and grow that passion because to them it's just another standard. It's just another topic," Koek added.

"The STEM in Weather STEM is not gratuitous," WeatherSTEM CEO and Founder Ed Mansour explained. "It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics."

And Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle was the first school in Duval County to partner with WeatherSTEM to engage students and make meteorology lessons more interactive.

"When we brought in WeatherSTEM it brings the lessons to life and the kids are able to make sense of it all," Koek said. "The kids can start to build and predict and play meteorologist, and that's really cool to see."

Six years ago, Mansouri and his team installed a weather camera and station at the school. Students are able to take the live, and even archived, data from their local station and integrate that into their lessons.

"We have sensors all across the campus that tie directly into our gardens, ties directly into our ponds," Koek added. "The kids utilize those lessons and activities to figure out how to grow their crops. It's fully integrated and aligns right with our mission."

In fact, WeatherSTEM provides free lessons to teachers to use in their classrooms. The courses range from cloud classifications to air quality to the sea breeze and much, much more. Students have access to data from stations across the entire WeatherSTEM network, which includes more than 500 stations.

Ed Mansouri started WeatherSTEM in 2015. The company was born out of an online education software company

"Education is going to always be a part of our DNA," Mansouri added. "That is something that we really are proud of is the work we are doing to help improve weather literacy for our states children."

But the company has grown into so much more branching off into athletics and emergency management.

"Of course, first and foremost, the health and safety part of what were doing is the key, but then beyond that how can we make it educational, how can we make it engaging," Mansouri said.

"To see kids learn in this fashion and have the ability to get up and move and engage in the learning, it really warms your heart and allows you to realize you're doing much more than just sitting a kid down and giving them a textbook," Koek commented.

"No matter what discipline youre in science, medicine, journalism, or engineering were in a world that has a lot of data," Mansouri added. "So all of the data we collect from these systems is free and open to the public and its being used in everything from elementary to high school to college level courses, statistics, actuarial science. Really not only helping students learn about the fascinating field of weather and climate and meteorology, but also data as well."

They also offer a full year high school credit course in meteorology through Florida Virtual School, and work closely with the meteorology programs at the universities where they have.

A lesson for us all no matter where life takes you, its rewarding to give back and stick to your roots.

"We are grateful for Ed and his team," Koek mentioned. "They've been great to partner with."

Committee for Public Education online meeting: Oppose the dangerous reopening of schools in Australia! Form and join our rank-and-file action safety…

Posted: at 1:50 am

The Committee for Public Education (CFPE) invites educators, students, parents and working people in Australia and internationally to participate in an online meeting on Saturday, November 13 at 4.00 p.m. (AEDT), to discuss the urgent need to build a movement opposing the reopening of the school system amid widespread COVID-19 community transmission.

There is no scientific basis whatsoever for the rushed return to face-to-face teaching. Like its international counterparts, the ruling elite in Australia is acting not according to medical science but in the interests of profit. Schools must be open and unvaccinated children brought back into classrooms so their parents can be herded into workplaces. This is necessary for the economic reopening, with corporations given free rein to maximise profits without regard for health and safety.

Australias political establishment insists that children and young people are not at significant risk from COVID-19. This is a blatant lie. There is now a clear body of scientific evidence on the substantial risks posed to children and young people by the disease, including long-term neurological and respiratory effects.

Both science and international experience shows that schools have acted as vectors for the virus. In the UK more than 108 children have died of COVID and thousands are suffering from long COVID. In the US over 2.1 million children have been infected in the last three months with more than 230 child fatalities.

In the past five weeks in Australia over 200 schools have closed in New South Wales and more than 400 in Victoria. Schools in regional centres account for a growing number of school clusters and positive cases among children and staff. Already in Victoria 13 percent of all infections are among children under 9-years with 28 percent of those who catch the virus aged under 19.

In response, authorities are lifting the most basic health measures, with infections to see only specific classrooms asked to isolate, instead of whole schools and new guidelines about what constitutes a close contact. Not only has a scientifically-based strategy of eliminating the virus been dismissed, but many elementary mitigation measures are being junked as part of the new let it rip agenda.

Throughout the pandemic, the teacher unions, including the New South Wales Teachers Federation (NSWTF) and the Australian Education Union (AEU), have functioned as mouthpieces of the political establishment, relaying official health guidelines while working to block any independent action by educators and school workers in defence of their health and safety.

Educators and students need to take matters into their own hands by forming rank-and-file safety committees in every school, independent of the unions, to organise resistance and defend the lives of staff and pupils, including the right to fully-resourced online learning.

The CFPE has played the leading role in the fight for the formation of these committees in Australia, drawing on the critically important experiences of educators in North America, Europe, and Asia who have likewise organised independently of their trade unions.

The CFPE online meeting will review these experiences and outline our perspective for mobilising a unified struggle of school workers, students and working people, on an internationalist and socialist program.

‘There is no return to online education’: Hawari – Roya News English

Posted: at 1:50 am

Monday, the Minister of Health Feras Hawari said that the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Jordan is expected, especially after the reopening of sectors across the Kingdom and the return to in-person education.

This came during a meeting held by the Health, Environment and Population Committee, the Ministry of Health, and the Jordanian Food and Drug Administration.

Hawari stressed that there is no return to online education in schools.

He also said that the Kingdom will not witness a new COVID-19 wave similar to previous ones.

During the meeting, Hawari indicated that 33 percent of the COVID-19 infections recorded daily are among those aged between 10 and 17, noting there are two million people within this age group in Jordan.

He also expected that the Kingdom would not record more than 3,000 coronavirus cases per day.

Regarding receiving the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Hawari indicated that the Kingdom began offering it to those over the age of 60, in addition to health sector workers about a month and a half ago, and it will begin administering it in the coming weeks to all age groups who have received two doses of the vaccine.

Last week, the Ministry of Health announced that it is considering administering a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine six months after the second dose. This includes everyone in Jordan.

Computational tools to make Sanskrit teaching interesting and simpler – Times of India

Posted: at 1:49 am

Teaching Sanskrit through computational tools is an effective way due to which a language as difficult as Sanskrit would become relatively easy and more students would be able to learn it. Computational linguistics is defined as a combination of Computer Science and any language.

Speaking to Education Times, Amba Kulkarni, Professor, Department of Sanskrit Studies, University of Hyderabad, says, In order to read any Sanskrit text one needs to know the suffix attached to the Sanskrit word which is not seen separately. This suffix is integrated with the Sanskrit word. Learning Sanskrit is a difficult task as the learners would have to memorise all the forms of Kriya (verb). In the Sanskrit language, there are, in addition to singular and plural, dual forms of the words. In order to help users, we have designed a computational tool where we just give a word and the machine shows all the forms of that Sanskrit word. For instance, if we enter the word Rama, the computer will provide us with all its forms in the Sanskrit language."
