Has Francisco Lindor Been Worth The Investment For The Mets? – The Cold Wire

The New York Mets are no strangers to paying up for elite players.

They did it last year with pitcher Max Scherzer, and they did it for shortstop Francisco Lindor.

After acquiring the shortstop from Cleveland in 2021, the Mets knew they needed to pay him.

That is exactly what they did, signing Lindor to a massive 10-year $341 million contract.

That deal made him one of the highest-paid players in baseball.

It seemed necessary though as Lindor was a four-time all-star in Clevland and coming off three top-10 MVP finishes.

But, his first season in New York did not go well.

Not only did the Mets fail to make the playoffs, but Lindor was an average player at best.

He hit .230 with 20 home runs, 63 RBIs, and a career-low OPS+ of 100 in 125 games.

Was it the pressure of playing in a big city that got to Lindor?

Well, he answered those questions with a bounce-back 2022 season.

In 2022, Lindor was back to his elite self, putting together a monster statistical season for the Mets.

He hit .270 with 26 home runs, and 107 RBIs, and scored 98 runs while missing only one game.

One of the biggest differences between 2021 and 2022 for Francisco Lindor was his performance in the first two months of the season. #Mets #LGM https://t.co/R65ziqz9FT

Matt Musico (@mmusico8) December 2, 2022

His efforts allowed him to finish ninth in NL MVP voting for the year.

It is hard to argue with the production of Lindor this past season, and with the contract, he signed in 2021.

The 29-year-old remains one of the top shortstops in the league and has been worth the lofty investment.

After a failure of a postseason run by the Mets that saw them get upset in the first round.

All eyes will be on this team to see how they respond in 2023.

Lindor needs another monster season to erase all doubts about the struggles he had in 2021.

Cooling India Could Be a $1.6 Trillion Investment Opportunity – EcoWatch

Posted: at 12:19 am

A new report by the World Bank has found that as climate change continues to cause Indias temperatures to rise, there is the possibility of a $1.6 trillion investment opportunity in progressive green energy technologies by 2040.

Alternative cooling technologies could lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions considerably, as well as create almost 3.7 million jobs, a press release from the World Bank said.

As temperatures in India get hotter each year, more than 160 to 200 million people could be exposed to deadly annual heat waves by 2030. Additionally, a decline in productivity caused by heat stress could cause about 34 million people in the country to lose their jobs.

It is likely that the need for cooling in India will increase to eight times the current levels by 2037, which will lead to a 435 percent projected surge in greenhouse gas emissions each year for the next 20 years.

We need to ensure that the countrys cooling plans do not cause more GHG emissions, leading to greater warming, the World Banks Country Director in India Auguste Tano Kouam said, as Down to Earth reported.

New plans to help people in India adjust to climbing temperatures are in the works, the press release said. The country started the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) in 2019, which brings sustainable cooling procedures to different sectors like air-conditioning for transportation, refrigeration and a cold temperature-controlled supply chain network for pharmaceuticals and agriculture and cooling for buildings. The hope is that by 2037 to 2038, cooling demand will be lowered by as much as 25 percent.

Indias cooling strategy can help save lives and livelihoods, reduce carbon emissions and simultaneously position India as a global hub for green cooling manufacturing, Kouam said in the press release. The report suggests a sustainable roadmap for cooling that has the potential to reduce 300 million tons of carbon dioxide annually by 2040.

If cooling strategies are adopted as standard for constructions that are financed by private and government funds, it will ensure that increasing temperatures dont unfairly affect those who are poorest.

The report, Climate Investment Opportunities in Indias Cooling Sector, indicated that the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana the affordable housing program in India could proportionally adopt these changes, which could help more than 29 million rural residences and 11 million urban homes that the government wants to build.

Funding through private investments in cooling technologies for districts which use a central plant to produce chilled water and underground pipes to distribute it to numerous buildings was recommended by the report. The technique can lower energy bills by 20 to 30 percent by lowering the cost of having to cool individual buildings.

The report suggested repairing gaps in cold chain systems in order to bring the increasing amount of food and pharmaceuticals that is wasted during transport to a minimum. Food loss can be reduced by around 76 percent and carbon emissions can be lowered by 16 percent by investing in refrigerated and pre-cooling transportation.

Almost $13 billion in food is lost during transport each year due to heat.

India also plans to phase out hydrochlorofluorocarbons, which are used as refrigerator and air conditioner coolants and deplete the ozone layer, by 2047. Improving the maintenance, servicing and disposal of machinery that uses hydrochlorofluorocarbons, as well as changing to alternatives that have a lower carbon footprint, has the potential to create two million jobs over the next twenty years and lower the need for refrigerants by about 31 percent, the report said.

The right set of policy actions and public investments can help leverage large scale private investment in this sector. We recommend that these moves be accelerated by creating a flagship government mission to address the challenges and opportunities from rising temperatures in India, the authors of the report Abhas K. Jha, Practice Manager, Climate and Disaster Risk Management, South Asia, and World Bank Climate Change Specialist Mehul Jain said in the press release.

Travel Diary: The Resplendence of Pondicherry – LiveWire

Posted: November 26, 2022 at 12:30 am

It wasnt difficult to see the light when besieged by such resplendence. What hits you at first is the smell of the spray you can only feel but not skim yet; the gap seems tempting but distant enough to the touch. It was difficult to tell where Rock Beach ended and the city of Pondicherry began. It wasnt difficult, however, to take a stroll on the Promenade under the moonlight slanting through the crevasses of the clouds overhead.

Life appeared ravishing, and it took me all my strength to not be lured into the enticement that the waves offered it would have taken a man of stronger character to walk away from all of that without batting an eyelid.

Sunrise at Rock Beach

The Adyar Bhavan on the road that connects the temple of Manikula Vinayagar raises its head in veneration, but it is not easy to give up on the prospect of a piping hot masala dosa served with a dollop of butter on top and the hint of unease at what it forbade an uninterested appetite washed down with the sweetest of coffees sourced from the Western Ghats in Karnataka. The Indian Coffee House, located a hundred metres down Jawaharlal Nehru Street, prefers to let this pass as an outswinger pitched on off-stump, but chooses not to curl its lips in derision.

One could not walk down these roads without passing a tinge of admiration for the exalted ashram that Sri Aurobindo set up in 1926; the last vestige of pride that overshadowed the sun setting in the west diametrically opposite to where Rock Beach was troubled you enough as you shook your head in vexation with what the town had presented to you so far.

It was not unpleasant to see clusters of castaways and tramps throng the sacred porticoes of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, knowing well that man was more considerate and charitable when in the presence of God. Life made no distinction between Hyderabad and Pondicherry in both places, it is felt to be more desirable to live on the alms of others than work for a living as the strong-bodied among the beggars attest.

***

It takes a lot of will to wake up early and see the sunrise at Serenity Beach a few kilometres down the East Coast Road after a big night in; the backpackers hostels catering to the horde of solo travellers make good business at this time of the year. The monsoon has just set in, and although the humidity appeals to ones senses and asks to be set free, summer has departed. That is more than what one can ask for on the coastlines of India; of such small victories are ones days here made.

Fellow travellers those outlandish enough to wake up and chase the sunrise anyway make good use of the waspish hues that the pre-dawn gifts to the fortunate at this beach. Seen in the dark, the sky changes from a fantastic deep shade of late purple to mauve within minutes; you blink and you miss it. Shifting from a papaya whip to a deep atomic tangerine, one could be forgiven for not knowing that the northern lights were a million miles away from where one stood.

Rock Beach, with the Lighthouse prominent

The stars disappear one after the other, the Moon bids a hasty goodbye (but still lurks like a naughty schoolboy behind the curtains of the western caprices) and the star of the show the fiery-red ball we call the provider of life on Earth the Sun, makes a fashionably late appearance. It is not difficult to perceive that the world outside where men are cruel to each other has stopped existing; that this is all there is, and that this is the Truth one has spent all their life seeking. Nothing holds more significance than the moment when the sun rises from the horizon, bathed in celestial light. One feels lost in the vacuum created by time in space.

Staying true to its name, this beach ensures that contact from the world outside of its peripheries remains closed; the fishing hamlet that surrounds it and closes it in a vice-like grip deserves accord of the highest order. No middle-class tourist with disposable income freshly minted off the press can remain steadfast to what this beach signifies, and the idea of sanctity it represents.

***

No beach could match up to what one experienced at Serenity; certainly not the urban bazaar that is called Paradise (another reference to Hyderabad) and masquerades as a shoreline. The ferry ride taken across the gentle creek subterfuge as a backwater holds well until the pilot opens his mouth in stupefaction at the reality being pointed out; no wonder people feel betrayed when cruelly put face to face with the Truth. Living in delusions seems a much simpler, and often easier choice.

Sunrise at Serenity Beach

The visit to Auroville is timed with the bloom of frangipani; it is no coincidence that the jasmine that greets me on the many walks I am compelled to take in the inner confines of the commune smells of distaste yet a peculiar kind of freedom. The lassitude of the inmates mixed with the torpor that the afternoon invariably brings is overly seductive; it seems captivating yet far away from where I stand. It is that inner centring that mystics all over the world speak of that distinguishes us, beings of the same creed though we are.

The giant Banyans branches have twisted in a death-like grimace beyond recognition. It does not bow as I pay my respects to it for simply showing up, merely for being there, yet I sense that it appreciates the advances made appropriate or not. There is no place for dogma in Auroville, and it is not surprising to see that the ideas it preaches find little mention on the brochures supplied by travel agents in and around the hotels of Pondicherry.

The Matri Mandir or Golden Dome at Auroville

It seems apt to end ones sojourn here with a dish of well-made Ratatouille at Madame Shanthes sprinkled quite liberally with condiments found nowhere near the French Riviera. I spot a French family of five from Lyon sitting near the balustrade but lack the courage to inquire as to what they make of this. Memphis Depay, quite naturally, dominates our conversation. This pilgrimage of the heart would have been incomplete without a trip to Baker Street across from MG Road; it seems too tantalising a proposal to pass up the quiche and croissants calling out my name and asking for nothing in return save a few inches off the waistline.

The 10 Most Beautiful Checkmates Of All Time – Chess.com

Posted: at 12:27 am

Checkmate is the essence of chess. It ends the game, providing a satisfying closure to a long struggle.

Checkmates can also be incredibly beautiful. By definition, checkmate involves coordination and teamwork between your pieces. No single piece can ever deliver checkmate alone. Even the mighty queen must, at a minimum, have support from one other piece from its side, or possibly some traitorous opposing pieces that block their monarch's escape squares. The coordination of the supporting and opposing forces can create thousands of checkmating combinations, some that happen daily and some that have yet to ever be played over the board.

We've broken down our promised top 10 most beautiful checkmates in our video below. If you want, check it out now! Otherwise, scroll on for the full list here as well as thoughts on what makes a checkmate particularly beautiful.

What makes a checkmate beautiful? Certainly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and there are some mates that may be particularly delightful to you and less so to others. That said, there are elements that we can identify that are often found in "beautiful checkmates."

The following are 10 of the most beautiful checkmates ever played, as selected by the author with contributions from Chess.com's content team. Each meets multiple of the above criteria, and taken as a whole, these 10 represent a wide range of beautiful patterns.

There is one other criterion I have added: All of these checkmates are from actual games. Composed positions often feature incredibly beautiful checkmates, and perhaps I should make a list of the most beautiful composed checkmates later, but for now, I have stuck to checkmates played in games between two human chess players.

We begin with nearly the oldest checkmate on our list. Donisthorpe's delightful checkmate is hardly the most complex we'll see, but its wonder is in how impossible the initial move seems as well as the delightful pair of checkmates it leads to.

In another pretty but not overly complex checkmate, Neugebauer must have shocked Degenkolbe as he reverses a seemingly losing position with a thunderbolt. This idea has been seen in a few games, but this is the earliest example I have seen. If you know a prior example, please share it in the comments!

In the only checkmate from the 21st century on this list, IM Lev Milman finds a dazzling and unique sequence to achieve a checkmate that is hard to believe at first. Can the black king really have no escape here?!

Bauer's masterpiece has been published in countless checkmating anthologies, and with good reason, it's a pristine combination with multiple aesthetic lines leading to checkmate.

Genrikh Kasparian may not have ascended to the heights of the competitive chess world, but his chess compositions are among the very best ever created. Here he created magic over the board with a violent combination that concludes with a resistance-crushing quiet move.

While findable in a puzzle, Vaccaroni's combination (older than Donisthorpe's by just one year) seems nearly impossible to find over the board. It strikes like lightning from a clear blue sky and converts seeming chaos into clear checkmate.

This combination inspired GM Magnus Carlsen in the final tiebreak game of the 2016 World Chess Championship match. What more can be said?

Our final three checkmates see the difficulty truly ramp up. Engels's checkmate deserves a place here in the top three because of the incredible array of variations and possible checkmates. It's amazing how many different checkmates emerge from the combination and ALL of them are beautiful, unique, and forced.

Subtlety is the order of the day in our #2 checkmate as Jung crafts a true zugzwang with a lone bishop battling a queen. If Black needn't move, no win could be forcedbut Black must move, and even with a massive material advantage, every single move leads to catastrophe.

Our #1 most beautiful checkmate combines the complexity of Engels vs. Cardoso with the subtlety of Jung vs. Szabados. Rossolimo offers a stunning set of sacrifices to drag the black king into a net that is miraculously closed by White's own attacking king and a deadly quiet move by the rook.

There you have it10 incredible checkmates! What do you think of this list? Which amazing checkmates have been left off that you think desperately deserve inclusion? Leave your suggestions and comments below, and I hope that these checkmates have made your day just a little bit better.

Chess Facts That Will Make You Feel Old – Chess.com

Posted: at 12:27 am

As we approach the year 2023, the same distance from the year 2000 as the original theatrical release of Star Wars, the chess world chugs forward to the next world championship and another year of fun, excitement, and growth.

They say that age is just a number, although the word "just" does a lot of work in that adage. If thatStar Wars fact didn't make you feel old, try these chess facts.

It's January 9, 2007. Apple CEO Steve Jobs steps onto a stage in San Francisco, California. He is about to unveil the most groundbreaking piece of technology in years: the iPhone. Three weeks later, Microsoft announces its next operating system: Vista. Somewhat less groundbreaking.

Through it all, three future chess grandmasters aren't even born yet: GMs Marc'Andria Maurizziand Bharath Subramaniyam were born later that year, and GM Abhimanyu Mishrain 2009.

At least no grandmaster is younger than the iPad. Well, yet. The first iPad came out on April 3, 2010, exactly five months before FM Tani Adewumi was born on September 3.

It's hardly more comforting to know that "just" six grandmasters are younger than Twitter, as Jack Dorsey sent the first tweet on March 21, 2006. Among these, GM Pranav V was also born the same day the world champion title was reunified. Maurizzi was born two years after fellow Frenchman GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave earned his title in 2005. Or this: Anand became world champion on September 30, 2007; Bharath was born about two weeks later.

The last time Carlsen was not the world number-one was back in 2011. He regained the top spot from Anand on the July 2011 FIDE rating list and hasn't looked back yet. So what was going on in the world back on June 30, 2011, the last time Carlsen was outside the top spot?

Adele's21 was the number-one album in the U.S. for the week of June 25-July 1. Remember that Adele's albums are named for her age when production began (not upon release). She is now 34.

The last Harry Potter movie hadn't come out yet. Deathly Hallows Part 2 would finally be released on July 7. Daniel Radcliffe turned 22 about two weeks later and is now 33.

Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls was the reigning Most Valuable Player in the NBA, as announced back on May 3. Rose, also 22 then and now 34, has since played for five teams (including the Bulls) and required four knee surgeries.

Windows XP was still supported by Microsoft, as it would be until 2014. Apple's iPhone 4 was out, but not the 4S.

The planet Neptune had yet to complete an orbit since it was discovered in 1846It's got a long way to go out there! The orbit was finally completed on July 12.

Sudan was still one country, the largest in Africa. South Sudan seceded on July 9 and joined the United Nations on July 14, rendering Sudan the third-largest country in Africa.

And, finally, the U.S. Space Shuttle program was still active. It only ended on July 21 once Atlantis landed from its final voyage to space.

Whether you like movies, music, television, sports, or some combination of the four, there's something for you in this section.

GM Anatoly Karpov became world champion the same year that Jaws was released, while his bitter rival GM Garry Kasparov took his title when Back To The Future came out. GM Vladimir Kramnik became champion the same year as Gladiator and Cast Away (I could have sworn Cast Away was closer to 2005). And do you like Pixar films? Anand became champion the year Ratatouille came out while Magnus's reign began in the year of Frozen.

And Carlsen's reign is younger than several famous (although, in some of these cases, not exactly good) pop songs you might not expect, including "Friday," "Call Me Maybe," "Rolling in the Deep," "Thrift Shop," and "Wrecking Ball."

Karpov, who gained back the title of FIDE World Champion in the split in 1993, still held that position by the time Seinfeld ended on May 14, 1998. The world championship would remain split until 2006, meaning this 13-year period of chess history overlapped the entire original run of Friends, which debuted in 1994 and concluded in 2004.

Kasparov had retired by 2006, announcing the end of his professional chess career on March 10, 2005. It was only two weeks after this that the U.S. version of The Office began on March 24.

Finally, we go to sports, where Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi made their FIFA World Cup debuts in the summer of 2006 whenyou guessed itthe chess world championship was still split. Meanwhile, the last time a non-European country won the World Cup was Brazil on June 30, 2002, almost a full year before Firouzja was born on June 18, 2003. As for the other football? Well, Tom Brady was drafted when Kasparov was still world champion, on April 16, 2000. Kasparov finally lost his title on November 4 of that year.

Several star chess players reached a round-numbered age in 2022, and many more will in 2023.

In 2022, GM Andrey Esipenko turned 20, GMs Fabiano Caruana and Ding Liren turned 30, GMs Levon Aronian and Francisco Vallejo turned 40, and GMs Alexei Shirov and Loek Van Wely turned 50.

Next year? Well, Kasparov turns 60 years old. GMs Joel Lautier and Peter Heine Nielsen turn 50 while GMs Alexander Grischuk, Leinier Dominguez, and former youngest-GM-in-the-world Etienne Bacrot turn 40. GM Wesley So turns 30 while Firouzja, GM Arjun Erigaisi, and GM Hans Niemann turn 20.

If there's one person whodoesn't seem to age, it's Anand. He recently played at the European Club Cupwhere three of his 2700-rated teammatesGMs Richard Rapport, Bogdan-Daniel Deac, and Gukesh Dwere born after Anand's first world championship match back in 1995. Anand played first board as the highest-rated of all of them, scoring +1.

Anand also defeated Erigaisi in the event. In the time between their births (Anand on December 11, 1969, and Erigaisi on September 3, 2003), there were no fewer than five undisputed world champsGM Boris Spassky, GM Bobby Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, and Kramnikand 10 prime ministers of India: Indira Gandhi (twice), Desai, Charan Singh, Rajiv Gandhi, V. P. Singh, Shekhar, Rao, Vajpayee (twice), Gowda, and Gujral.

The recently concluded Chess.com Global Championship had one early match, in particular, that is just a total time warp: GM Raunak Sadhwani, who was born in 2005, played and defeated GM Veselin Topalov, who was busy in 2005 becoming the FIDE world champion.

What do you think happened first: the development of the world's strongest chess engine or the U.S. electing its first Black president? Well, it's a virtual tie, but Stockfish 1.0 was released on November 2, 2008, two days before Barack Obama was elected president on November 4. Three months later, on February 5, 2009, Mishra became the first future grandmaster born during the Obama administration.

How a Huge Cheating Scandal Altered the Chess World – Front Office Sports

Posted: at 12:27 am

Magnus Carlsen can do things on a chessboard that no one else in the world can, and on September 5, he changed the chess world with a move that no one saw coming.

It began with a single tweet.

Ive withdrawn from the tournament. Ive always enjoyed playing in the @STLChessClub, and hope to be back in the future, the world champion wrote. Those words were accompanied by a well-known video of soccer coach Jos Mourinho saying, If I speak, I am in big trouble.

While Carlsen didnt speak publicly for three weeks, his implication was clear: He believed that when 19-year-old grandmaster Hans Niemann beat him the day before at the prestigious Sinquefield Cup, ending Carlsens undefeated streak in classical chess at 53 games, that he had cheated with computer assistance.

As good as Carlsen is and hes probably the best in human history hes no match for Stockfish and other chess computers, commonly referred to as chess engines, which can calculate dozens of moves into the future. Its unclear if and how Niemann could have received recommendations from an assistant watching the live streamed games players cannot have phones or other communication devices on them while they play but if he had some kind of concealed device, beating the world champion would be easy enough.

After Carlsens withdrawal, the Sinquefield Cup introduced extra security measures for subsequent rounds, namely a 15-minute delay between the games and the livestream broadcast.

While players were already routinely wanded with a metal detector on entry, Niemann, was subject to an especially deliberate check, which took a minute-and-a-half.

Niemann sat for routine post-game interviews after his match against Carlsen and the following one, a draw against fellow 19-year-old grandmaster Alireza Firouzja. Following both, he was criticized by other grandmasters for missing key aspects of the games he had just played, suggesting to some that he hadnt really been thinking about the moves he made. Carlsen later claimed that Niemann didnt seem to be focusing very hard at key moments.

Still, no one has found conclusive evidence that he cheated, and Niemann, while admitting to isolated incidents of cheating in online games, maintains that he has never cheated in an in-person match.

Carlsens decision the first time he had ever dropped out of a tournament that he had already started resulted from years of rising stakes in the chess world and growing mistrust with this particular opponent.

This centuries-old game is seeing unprecedented numbers of players and the biggest prize pools in history. Twitch and other live platforms present a new revenue stream, particularly for young stars like Niemann.

With more people interested in playing, watching, and improving at the game, theres more to gain from making a name in chess.

The major online chess platforms make huge investments in catching cheaters.

Seventy percent of the bans [from the site] are automated, Chess.com CEO Erik Allebest told me. If somebodys playing blitz [in which players typically have three to five minutes to think during their moves for the entire game] better than Magnus Carlsen plays in classical chess [in which each player gets several hours], you know, theres a problem.

Algorithms can easily root out players who are simply doing what a chess engine recommends, and strong players can often sniff out cheaters just from the strength and style of their play. Since the start of 2021, Chess.com has closed roughly 18,000 to 35,000 accounts for cheating each month. The site has banned Niemann in the past, and more than 100 other grandmasters, many of whom were allowed to come back after admitting to cheating.

Cheat detection is far and away the number one investment of man hours in Lichess, and I would bet the other servers use a similarly large amount of resources, said Lichess community organizer Chris Callahan.

The room to navigate for cheaters gets a little larger when one considers that both Chess.com and Lichess are terrified of accusing someone innocent.

You dont want to be wrong even one in a thousand times, said Allebest.

The consequences for famous players are clear, said Callahan. They stop getting invitations to tournaments, their colleagues look at them as cheaters, it stops all these professional possibilities. Theyre going to have the crimson letter on their jacket for the rest of their life. But even amateur players suffer consequences because they have friends, they have connections in the real world.

Because of the huge numbers of games being monitored over 400 million per month on Chess.com a tiny imperfection in the detection system could result in thousands of innocent players getting flagged.

That leads to the question of what a chess platform does when it identifies a cheater.

Chess.com has always handled incidents of cheating privately, they are considering adjustments to that policy.

We may internally decide to be more public about that stuff going forward, said Allebest, while maintaining that the company will keep its options open.

The issue is also a live one in the world of poker, which went through a similar scandal in September in which a revered player, Garrett Adelstein, accused poker newcomer Robbi Jade Lew of cheating in an individual hand in which she won $269,000, perhaps through receiving information about other players cards from a third-party with access to the games live stream.

While poker professional Bart Hanson is 50-50 on whether Lew did in fact cheat, he said that computer assistance is a real threat in online poker.

You almost cant play nowadays online for any serious money, said Hanson, due to programs that can provide optimal strategies in real-time. He added that online poker is illegal in most U.S. states and that the offshore sites people use have no interest in really cracking down on this stuff.

Some players simply use bots to play for them.

Hanson said that direct cheating in casinos is generally not much of a concern, but collusion, in which two players adjust their strategy so that they both get an edge against the rest of the table, can be a factor. Even murkier is the issue of staking, in which players spread their risk by buying a percentage of each others winnings.

Lets say I have a 50% [stake] in you [in a tournament], Hanson said, and we both make the final table. Shouldnt I have to divulge that to everybody at the table? Wont that affect the way that I play? But its one of these things thats almost impossible to enforce. All these deals are somewhat secret.

Chess.com just wrapped up its first Global Championship, which carried a $1 million prize pool. The company hired security professionals who do embassy sweeps and boardrooms, per Allebest. If theres a device on the body, theyll find it.

Niemann, however, was disinvited, following the accusation by Carlsen. It was an awkward move for Chess.com, given that the company acquired Carlsens Play Magnus venture for $82.9 million in August, but it was one that Allebest felt was justified, especially given that the site had caught Niemann cheating multiple times online.

We were days away from having our biggest prize money event in history, and Magnus did the biggest, loudest, most unprecedented thing in chess history to say something, he explained. Given the sites history with Niemann and potential concerns from other players, I think its understandable that we just hit the reset button.

Neither cheating case is clear cut, but both have shined a light on an awkward truth in both chess and poker: Its the greedy cheaters that get caught.

If I knew everyones cards, I can guarantee that you wouldnt catch me cheating, because I would intentionally make mistakes, said Hanson. I would only need to make a few decisions that are 50-50 the right way each session to be a huge winner.

Similarly in chess, there is broad consensus that it is nearly impossible to catch someone who limits computer assistance to a small percentage of games and only a few moves in those games.

Unless you see them do it, theres no way, said Allebest.

The Chess.com Global Championship, a rapid-style event in which players get 10 minutes to make their moves, highlighted both the top chess talent in the world and some of its most notable commentators, with the company recruiting many of the most popular chess streamers to provide live analysis.

Chess.com is investing in the game to try to turn chess players into chess fans. Part of that means leaning into faster formats, which tend to be more exciting for viewers and players.

Lets get chess on an ESPN sub-channel, said Allebest. Lets get chess in sports bars. Live streamed tournaments are currently shown on sites such as Chess.com and Chess24.com, or platforms such as YouTube.

He mentioned the poker pocket cam that shows players cards as the innovation that made the game an accessible television product.

Whats our pocket cam? Its not just the eval bar [which shows the computer assessment of who is winning]. We have a lot of cool things coming.

That will involve weaving the stories of the players, their abilities, and rivalries into narratives that make an ancient game into high drama. This time, preferably without the scandal.

The Game of Chess Continues – OPEC, China and the Oil Market – FinanceFeeds

Posted: at 12:27 am

Over the past decade, the US has been complaining about the amount of power which the BRIC group, and specifically China, has on the global economy. BRIC stands for Brazil, Russia, India and China; these were the worlds fastest growing economies. Only in the past 10 months, the US has turned their attention toward OPEC due to the prices of fuel. Nevertheless, China seems to have a strong influence even over the price of crude oil.

Over the past 2-weeks, crude oil prices have declined by 12.8% and this week to an 11-month low. So why has the price significantly declined after strong price increases in October?

Chinas Supreme Reign over Oil Demand

One of oils main price influences is, without doubt, China. It is the largest economy in the world and the largest purchaser of crude oil alongside the US. China actually consumes 14% of the worlds oil this is 5 times more than Germany and 8 times more than the UK. For this reason, if news develops in China, it can rock the entire oil market.

In addition to this, China is also one of the largest exporters of raw materials. Therefore an economic decline in the Chinese economy, or worse a lockdown, can have a very strong impact on the global economy and supply chains. A potential decline in the price of crude oil is yet another consequence.

The amount of COVID-19 cases in the region is the main concern at the moment. Such numbers have previously resulted in the government placing full lockdowns. COVID-19 cases in China have reached over 55,000 per day and recorded their first deaths since September.

These developments have resulted in most market participants believing that the level of demand is likely to decline. In fact, a decline has already been seen due to the increased level of restrictions placed by the Chinese government. However, the demand will definitely drop sharply if cities fall into full lockdowns.

In addition to the above, the price of crude oil has also been pressured by the decline in economic activity. For the first time this year, the PMI figures for the UK, EU and US have all dropped into the contraction zone. The same can be said of the GDP figures which have declined for all economies. Consumer demand has remained high according to many reports such as Retail Sales figures. However, in spite of that, if economic activity continues to decline it can lead to further pressure on oil prices.

Nonetheless, traders should note that the decline cannot be certain. Traders should be cautious of opposing factors. For example, a weakening US Dollar is known to support the prices of crude oil. This is because it becomes cheaper for foreign buyers due to the altered exchange rate. Although such a situation could support prices, we have not witnessed it this time around. Oil prices have fallen despite the US Dollar Index having declined by almost 6.5%.

Another issue for the price of crude oil is a potential oil price cap being placed on Russian oil. The European Union and G7 members are currently in the middle of these negotiations. The issue with the planned restrictions on Russian oil is that, of course, Russia will not agree to it. In fact, the country has advised that it will halt all supply. This is an issue as Russia is the second largest global supplier of crude oil. However, the effect on the market will depend on how low the price cap will be.

Will OPEC Intervene Again?

OPEC have not been shy in making their opinion on pricing known. On many occasions, the group has repeatedly stated that they aim for an $80 per barrel price. This is slightly higher than the current price. But the question that traders are now asking is, what will OPEC decide at their next meeting?

OPEC is due to meet in the first week of December. If they announce a production change, as they did in October, it can create high levels of volatility. Back in October, the organization had announced that they would decrease their production targets by over 1 million barrels per day, prompting a 6 week upward trend. This was in response to the price declining to $76.

In conclusion, we can see that the price of crude oil is understandably under pressure from certain elements such as global economic contraction, as well as lower demand from China. However, its vital that traders remain cautious because other factors, such as supply and OPEC, can create a change in the trend and volatility levels.

Chess, the only pastime for Shubhi and her family – Hindustan Times

Posted: at 12:27 am

Carrom was Shubhi Guptas first love when she was just three. Thereafter, she began playing ludo. Within a few months, she shifted her attention to chess, a common passion for her family of four, including father, mother and elder brother.

In fact, it was her father Pradeep Gupta, who introduced the family to chess. The passion is such that the family hardly watches TV or spends time on social sites.

Shubhis back-to-back international medals this year, including a gold medal in the under-12 category at the Commonwealth Youth Chess Championship in Sri Lanka this week, are a reflection of her love for the sport. The 11-year-old Shubhi, who comes from Ghaziabad, scored a perfect 9/9 in this tournament.

This September, Shubhi won the under-12 title at the World Cadet Chess Championship at Batumi, Georgia.

That was my first big event after winning the national title in April this year, so I made sure that I should go back home with a medal and it happened according to my plan, Shubhi said.

I never tried any other sport than carrom, ludo and a bit of table tennis before opting for chess. I love solving puzzles, said Shubhi who also had three silver medals in standard, rapid and blitz categories at the Western Asian Youth Chess Championship at Maldives this June.

Shubhi, who won the National Amateur U-2000 Women Chess Championship in May 2022, after capturing a bronze in the in Sub-Junior Chess Championship in March, also won a silver medal at the Asian Schools Chess Championship in U-11 category at the Philippines in July 2021.

I havent watched TV for two years and I am focussing only on chess. It is the only thing on my mind right now. I am aiming for the womens GM norms in three years' time from now as the titles in the Worlds and Commonwealth Youth events have boosted my confidence, said Shubhi, who is being trained by Prasenjit Dutta.

Shubhi's mother, Urmila Gupta, travels with her to as many events as she can across the world.

She (Urmila) learnt chess only after getting married to me and thereafter the sport became the biggest love of the family. Now, Urmila teaches Shubhi about the game when she travels with her for events, said Pradeep.

In fact, during the lockdown, Shubhi trained by playing against all of us at home. We all play chess at home and only recently I have given mobile phones to my kids. Otherwise, they had chess as the only entertainment, Gupta said.

He describes Shubhi as calm and composed. She (Shubhi) always remains calm and composed and thats her strength in sport. At the start of her career, she looked a bit hassled, but as time progressed, she gained maturity in her game, and now she is altogether a different player, Pradeep added.

Sharad Deep is a versatile sports journalist, who loves writing on cricket and Olympic sport. He has played cricket at the university level and has been writing for Hindustan Times since 1997....view detail
