The Worldwide Hemp Clothing Industry is Expected to Reach $10.1 … – Business Wire

Posted: January 7, 2023 at 12:12 am

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Global Hemp Clothing Market Size, Share & Industry Trends Analysis Report By End User (Women, Men and Kids), By Type (Dress, Shirts, Pants, Coats & Jackets, Activewear, T-shirts), By Distribution Channel, By Regional Outlook and Forecast, 2022 - 2028" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The Global Hemp Clothing Market size is expected to reach $10.1 billion by 2028, rising at a market growth of 26.0% CAGR during the forecast period.

Hemp fiber is produced from the Cannabis sativa plant, which is better known for producing marijuana or hashish. Nevertheless, hemp only has 1% THC, contrary to marijuana's 20% THC content, which is what causes consumers to feel high when they smoke it. Amazing characteristics of this fiber include exceptional dyeability, UV light blocking, mildew resistance, and inherent antibacterial properties.

It effectively transfers heat as well. Some of the industries that use it include paper, building, biodegradable plastic, chemical cleanups, healthy food, and fuel. Hemp fiber is used to reinforce door panels by automakers like BMW in order to improve safety norms. Compared to other fabrics, hemp cloth uses less water, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and herbicides.

It is more successful at extracting carbon dioxide from the environment than many other crops, which results in a smaller carbon footprint. Hemp can absorb 10 to 15 tonnes of CO2 per acre throughout the growing season, which is equivalent to one person's usual annual CO2 emission. On the list of sustainable textiles and fibers, hemp is listed alongside jute, flax (linen), organic cotton, and bamboo.

Hemp fiber from the stem and seed can be used to make insulation and animal bedding, respectively. The earth benefits from hemp as well. The production of maize from a field will be higher if hemp was initially grown there. It's also a good idea to plant wheat and barley once the hemp crop has been harvested. Due to the potential benefits to the environment, several producers are working to have hemp and cannabis grown according to organic standards.

It has been widely publicized how much the fashion business contributes to the pollution and destruction of the rivers, oceans, and atmosphere. Every second, an estimated truckload of discarded clothing is burned or dumped. Although there are many residents who are concerned, the current sustainable fashion solutions are expensive and time-consuming. As consumer attitudes toward the environment & ecology have evolved, there is a greater need for eco-friendly clothes.

Market Growth Factors

Low Cost Of Hemp Fabric

The fact that hemp is a rapidly renewable resource and doesn't require the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides has a positive impact on the environment. Hemp can be renewed two to three times per year and generates more fiber per acre than trees.

Additionally, nothing is wasted during the production of hemp because the stalks are used to generate fiber and the seeds are used to make dietary supplements and oil. Industrial hemp plants are better at absorbing carbon dioxide than forests. These elements will accelerate the market for hemp garments even more.

Rising Demand For Natural Fabrics

Nowadays, it's fairly frequent to hear the word "organic." Including organic items in the everyday routine has several benefits. Today's market offers a variety of organic goods, including anything from organic food to organic clothing.

The organic agriculture movement, which emphasizes cultivation and processing without the use of synthetic or chemical pesticides or genetically modified or radioactive plants, includes organic products as a component. This ensures that the environment is not damaged too much.

Market Restraining Factors

Availability Of Various Substitutes Of Hemp Fabric

Various alternatives to hemp fabrics are available in the market such as linen, tencel and cotton. Overall, linen upholstery fabric is quite simple to maintain. In actuality, buyers can easily wash & dry slipcovers in their own homes. Depending on the buyer's option, linen fabric can also be washed by hand or by the dry cleaners.

One of the few textiles that doesn't wrinkle or crease readily is tencel, and any creases that do develop in the fabric as a result of being scrunched up for an extended period of time can be removed with ease.

Global Frozen Food Market projected to be worth USD 296.55 … – GlobeNewswire

Posted: at 12:12 am

Clifton, New Jersey, Jan. 05, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The research report titled, "Global Frozen Food Market Outlook, 2027," published by Bonafide Research anticipates the market to grow rapidly over the forecast period at a CAGR of 4.76%. The rising consumer preference for ready-to-eat food products that need the least preparation and cooking time is the major growth driver. The global rise in women's employment rates has spiked the demand for frozen food as cooking fresh meals becomes a challenge within a limited time frame. The trend toward convenience foods, as well as changes in lifestyle that result in altered dietary patterns and spending habits, have resulted in an increase in demand for frozen food products. The frozen food myth acts as a drawback, restricting consumers' willingness to spend on these products. Furthermore, the growing preference for fresh and natural products complicates matters. The sodium content and starch content are found to be in greater proportion, which might have side effects that may hinder the market.

COVID-19 effect

The frozen food industry has seen steady growth since COVID-19 began as people gravitated towards foods with longer shelf lives. Decreasing grocery store visits and preparing for potential food shortages motivated consumers to shop frozen during the pandemic. Frozen foods also appeal to consumers looking to avoid cooking when they cannot visit restaurants. Manufacturers, however, faced supply chain difficulties due to restrictions in some countries and a lack of raw materials. This delayed the end product's delivery. Due to this, the manufacturers started selling directly to consumers through online shops. Government policies prohibiting trade in international foodstuffs further acted as a restraining factor. Following the pandemic, manufacturers are innovating environment-friendly, organic, and recyclable frozen food packaging products.

Frozen Food Trends

The rising number of hotels, cafes, restaurants, and cloud kitchens that utilize frozen foods to prepare novel dishes with freshly preserved ingredients that save cooking time is another factor influencing market revenue. The development of numerous e-commerce retail channels that offer a comprehensive range of products and the emerging trend of ordering food online, on account of the higher penetration of smartphones coupled with high-speed internet, is expected to stimulate the frozen food market over the forecasted period. Frozen potatoes and meat & poultry together constitute over 55% market share. The freezer-to-microwave food pack is expected to be in huge demand due to its ease of use. Veganism is an emerging trend, stimulating the demand for frozen food that are pure, natural, and whole foods. Mainstream food manufacturers are embracing more sustainable ingredients to cater to the ever-increasing frozen plant-based food segment.

End User

The commercial segment generally prefers to use frozen vegetables, frozen meat, frozen seafood, or frozen poultry to prepare meals as they are readily available. It is much easier to stock these than it is to manage the inventory on a daily basis. Though the commercial segment currently dominates demand, residential consumers are expected to outnumber commercial consumers by over 52% by the end of the forecast period 2027. This is due to Residential consumers rising disposable incomes, convenient cooking, and cost-effectiveness when compared to eating out or ordering food. A major factor that influences this change in buying patterns is the wide variety of frozen food available over the counter, small pack sizes, and affordability.

Freezing Technique

Belt freezing or cryogenic spiral freezer technology is expected to be in high demand in the coming years because it allows for the production of frozen food on a small amount of available floor space. They are designed for easy cleaning and maintenance and use liquid nitrogen or liquid carbon dioxide as the refrigerant. Additionally, it reduces the cost per kg of treated product and achieves a much higher yield. Though the IQF technology is likely to remain the most sought-after technology to pack frozen food since each piece is individually frozen, particles do not cohere and do not transform into a solid block.

Product Type

Vegetarian-ready meals are expected to register the fastest growth rate of around 11% over the forecast period. Ready-to-eat food has become one of the most versatile segments in the frozen food market in recent years. The ready meals segment is expected to be in high demand over the forecast period due to changing food consumption patterns, increasing urbanization, an increase in women's employment, and a wide variety of frozen food. In particular, China and India are both seeing an increase in their consumption patterns, resulting in increased demand for the frozen ready-meal market. Frozen ready meals haven't always been popular, due to their low shelf life and high price, but over the forecast period, the market is predicted to go leaps and bounds. This is due to developments in cold storage infrastructure and increased investments by retailers in frozen-ready meals to popularise the product. Companies in the frozen packaged food sector are adding nutrient benefits along with flavor to appeal to a wider demographic seeking wellness and flavor.

Sales Channel

Online grocery shopping has increased with the emergence of mobile applications and e-retailers offering lucrative deals. Also, Independent Retailers or Departmental or convenience stores find it difficult to pile up innumerable frozen food options due to limited freezer space. This is where the supermarkets and the hypermarkets gain the advantage to stock up huge on frozen food products. But, due to insufficiency of time, consumers prefer to order them online rather than waste time commuting to a supermarket. More and more consumers are shifting their preference towards online shopping owing to a host of features, along with variety and convenience. With the rising prevalence of the Internet and extensive technological advancements, online frozen food shopping will be a lucrative opportunity for frozen food companies over the forecast period, with a growth rate of over 14%.

Regional Analysis

The Middle East & Africa region is projected to register the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. Rapid urbanization, a lack of time to cook, an increasing demand for convenient food, improved living standards, and the presence of a high percentage of expatriates are factors driving the demand for frozen food. Millennials and the Gen Z population are more inclined toward frozen foods owing to their willingness to try new varieties of convenience food. Saudi Arabia is heavily dependent on imports to meet local demand due to the insufficiency of food production. Due to their high retail stability and ease of import, frozen food products are more common in the nation than in other food formats.

The Asia-Pacific region is expected to register a higher growth rate during the forecast period, with brands rolling out numerous frozen food options. This is due to the rising number of working-class consumers in certain countries, specifically China and India. The market growth is attributed to increasing demand for frozen snacks, appetizers, ready meals, and desserts in the region, as well as muffins, and the growing influence of western culture on the region's young population. The growth of the organized retail sector and favorable government policies are attracting leading food manufacturers to establish their manufacturing units in the region. Moreover, the rapid expansion of the food & beverage and tourism industries is also driving the demand for frozen food across the Asia-Pacific region.

Europe leads the global frozen food market with the highest demand for frozen meat accounting for 35%. This is due to the fast and busy lives of its populace. The consumption pattern of consumers shifts from raw food to convenience foods. Germany and France are Europe's two most important frozen food markets. Factors like increasing urban income, economic stability, and high purchasing power are the key drivers for generating higher revenues. The growing popularity of frozen foods in Europe can also be attributed to the growing preference for ready meals, the cost-effectiveness of the products, the globalization of cuisines, evolving culinary practices, favorable regulations, innovative practices by players in the industry, and the increasingly busy lifestyles of consumers. Moreover, the introduction of various healthy and diet-related frozen meals has added to the popularity and convenience of frozen foods, thus providing further impetus to the market's growth.

North American consumers prefer greater convenience and on-the-go food, and the trend is towards smaller and more frequent meals. The fastest growing segments are frozen vegetables & fruits and ready meals. The demand for frozen ready meals is mainly driven by the rising demand for frozen pizza and handheld breakfast, which are positioned as low-cost products and thrive on quality and freshness. Innovative product developments, like low-trans-fat, low-fat, multigrain, whole wheat, and low-artificial-preservative products, are expected to provide an impetus to the frozen food industry. Penetration into the packaged and premium segments of frozen foods may be a huge opportunity for the frozen food market.

In Latin America, the advantages of frozen food and the strong backing for technological innovation have made the items more widely available and reasonably priced for consumers. Frozen food is becoming more affordable as a result of the development of new technology. The rapidly evolving retail landscape and the influx of multiple brands across various product categories have boosted the frozen snack market. This is also due to the booming food service industry. The women's workforce in Latin America has increased along with a rise in the youth populace, leading to an increase in the consumption of frozen food products.

Many frozen food manufacturers are responding to this by investing heavily in new manufacturing and processing equipment. They are also expanding operations by entering new markets, launching gluten-free, plant-based, sugar-free, organic, and clean-labeled products, as well as Keto diet options, which meet the varied requirements of consumers. Related Reports:

Global Frozen Fruits & Vegetables Market is anticipated to expand by over 5% CAGR during the forecast period. A shift has been observed globally among consumers towards frozen fruits and vegetables, with many consumers opting to be vegan and using substitute food products for carbohydrates and fibers. This growing adaption has enabled the manufacturers to innovate the products, enriching them with specific dietary requirements such as dairy-free, vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free, and plant-based products. Further, frozen fruits and vegetables are rapidly gaining traction among consumers as they offer a wide range of advantages over fresh produce. The technique employed in freezing fruits and vegetables assists in retaining the color, flavor, and nutritional value of these products. It slows down the decomposition by turning the residual moisture into ice, which prevents the growth of bacteria. They offer numerous benefits, including low cost, easy preparation, and availability during the off-season.

Global Frozen Potato Products Market has crossed revenue of USD 50 Billion in 2021, according to Bonafide Research. The availability of various forms of frozen potatoes, such as French fries, hash browns, shapes, mashed sweet potatoes, and others, has increased their popularity among consumers. This is due to the attraction of the fast-food segment and the expansion of quick-service restaurants. However, factors such as improved packaging formats, high-end manufacturing equipment with an increase in investment, and the emergence of new players in this dynamic market will lead the market to grow further. Frozen potato contains different vitamins and nutrients in their natural, preserved form and has a long shelf life. It also contains vitamin B6, fiber, magnesium, and antioxidants. Among all frozen food products, the frozen or processed potato has been identified as one of the most profitable.

Global Frozen Ready Meal Product Market to grow with an expected CAGR of above 5% during the forecast period. In recent years, frozen ready-to-eat food has emerged as one of the most versatile markets, driven by convenience and specific meal solutions. Owing to this increasing demand, the manufacturers have been mainly focusing on nutritional content and microbiological safety. Companies are also coming up with meal kits that include mixed dinners to attract working women. The market has been dominated by the top three regions, namely North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. One of the most recent market trends is online grocery shopping and the introduction of new apps. According to the obtained data, nearly 25% of the population purchased food and groceries from online retail channels.

Global Frozen Meat & Poultry Products Market has expanded significantly, owing to increased demand from both developed and developing countries, as well as advancements in freezing technology. The entire farm-to-table trend has been seemingly upended, anchored in advanced packaging, storage, and shipping across the globe. Consumers have come to accept frozen products as nutritionally equivalent to unfrozen ones. Industry players, in turn, are responding to the interest, and packaging companies have expanded their array of offerings to meet the range of transportation and storage needs of frozen meat. Brands in the frozen meat category have been harnessing state-of-the-art monitoring systems to ensure freshness. Beef and chicken, in particular, have gathered considerable steam of late, making them lucrative categories for players in the frozen market to capitalize on during the forecast period.

Global Frozen Fish & Seafood Products Market is gaining considerable revenues as consumers shift towards a healthy lifestyle with foods high in nutrition value. Seafood contains high levels of protein, low calories, and multiple vitamins and minerals, and specifically, fish have omega-3 fatty acids. Eating seafood decreases the risk of heart attack, stroke, hypertension, and obesity. Further, the influence of tourism and the hospitality industry contributes positively to the expanding frozen fish and seafood food market. The trend toward wild-caught fish is another key driver that is boosting the growth of the frozen fish and seafood market. Many consumers are citing wild-caught seafood's taste, healthfulness, and freshness. Since fish sourced from its natural habitats can only be harvested on a seasonal basis, companies are increasing efforts to freeze-cool wild-caught fish in order to ensure a year-round supply.

If you think your company isnt a software company, youre mistaken, according to McKinsey – Fortune

Posted: at 12:12 am

Every company is a software company.

Shifting to this mindset in 2023 would benefit any company, in any industry even if its more than 100 years old, according to McKinsey. To compete and grow in a digital world, traditional companies are realizing they must look, think, and act like a software company.

I sat down with Jeremy Schneider, a senior partner at McKinsey in the New York office, and a co-author of a report that delves into this topic. Software is becoming an essential element across an enormous share of most companies, Schneider says. Nearly 70% of top-performing companies are using software as a core strategy to differentiate themselves from the competition. And a third of top-performing companies are actually selling software.

He continues, If you think about companies that have really gone far down this path and have been successful, either the entire company or at least part of the company really feels like, operates like, and has a culture like a software business.

The team analyzed more than 20 software transformations and interviewed a dozen senior executives who have led successful software transitions, he says. The findings: Becoming a software business requires foundational change with different skill sets, practices, leadership, and organizational structures.

The way people are interacting with software is changing, Sudhir Nair, global head of the Aladdin Business at BlackRock told McKinsey. (Aladdin is a portfolio management software system.) Today, at BlackRock and at our Aladdin client [companies], a meaningful portion of the organization self-identifies as technologists, and a big chunk of those people dont sit within the part of the business formally recognized as the tech org.

Cultural transformation

Cloud computing, platform as a service, and A.I.-based programming assistance are putting unprecedented power into the hands of billions of workers, according to McKinsey. And its certainly helping to power remote work. But some companies still arent getting the business culture change part.

I often go in and talk to companies and they say, I want to build deeper software capability. Thats no problem. Ill just go hire some more software engineers, Schneider explains. But the reality is, thats such a tiny portion of what is required. It really is a cultural transformation that enables you to attract and retain the right talent. And it enables you to set up that talent for success by empowering them, and shifting the mindset of the organization to value what they do.

If fact, finance chiefs play a big role in this process, Schneider says. There are five CFO practices in the context of building deeper software capability or acting like a software company, he told me.

1) Having the right mindset towards investment. The reality is, building deep software capability or products requires sustained investment, Schneider says. In many cases, it can take three to sometimes as long as five years before you experience the fantastic returns people are excited about in software.

2) Its important for the CFO to understand software M&A, he says. Especially since its still quite expensive relative to other categories of M&A.

3) Reallocating resources is an important part of all CFOs jobs, but in software, a piece of that reallocation is even greater than most other businesses, Schneider says.

4) Theres a number of areas of portfolio management that often fall on the CFOs plate. But running a software portfolio requires understanding what is the right shape and contour of investment across different stages of the life cycle, he says.

5) If youre directly monetizing software, understanding how to put in place the right metrics internally and externally, like annual recurring revenue, is important, he says.

We find more and more companies across industries are coming to us saying, I dont want to learn from my peers. I want to learn from the best software companies because Im investing hundreds of millions of dollars in software engineering, Schneider says.

Software companies also understand how to prioritize the customer, he says. If you think about the way great software companies build a product, a customer-first focus is deeply embedded in that, Schneider says.

Mckinseys report also states: In our experience, one-third to one-half of a leadership team should be deep software experts. I asked Schneider if that meant CFOs will need to be more tech-savvy.

If you think about the CFO lens on a software transformation, it really goes from thinking of technology as a cost center with a group of projects to thinking of it as a collection of products that are creating value, he explains. Whether that value is directly revenue or revenue enablement. That mindset shift is quite essential. In many cases, that meant bringing in new finance leadership for the mindset shift. Or some CFOs themselves can make the shift.

For some finance chiefs, beefing up tech knowledge should be first on their list of New Years resolutions.

Have a good weekend.

Analysis: What’s the future of gene editing in the United Kingdom? – Genetic Literacy Project

Posted: at 12:12 am

Gene-editing technology is a powerful tool that can boost sustainable farming, fight nutrient deficiencies and reduce consumer food prices.

Dozens of countries have already enacted evidence-based regulations that allow their farmers to grow gene-edited crops engineered for disease resistance, increased nutrient content and many other useful traits.

Following its departure from the European Union (EU), England is poised to liberalise its food safety regulations and allow the commercial use of gene-editing technology in plant and animal breeding.

UK scientists have already begun to develop products that will benefit farmers and consumers and yield enormous economic and environmental dividends should the pending regulatory changes take effect.

The shifting regulatory landscape has drawn intense criticism from activist groups and organic food producers. While their objections to gene editing are well intentioned, they do not stand up to scientific scrutiny.

The UK is moving in the right direction by rolling back its restrictions on agricultural gene editing in England. Policymakers should move quickly, however, to embrace all forms of genetic engineering, including the technology used to produce genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Ample scientific evidence shows that these breeding tools are safely used in food production, generating billions in additional income for farmers and significantly lowering food prices for consumers.

Contemporary Problems and their Solutions-II [Religion, Human Nature, and Materialism] – Greater Kashmir

Posted: at 12:11 am

Materialism and Evil

Materialism brought disaster to life by allowing the evil in human nature to overcome the good in it. Darwinisms denial of the Creator, Marxisms economic interpretation of life, and Freudianisms sexual interpretation of human emotions and social relationshipsall these isms drove human beings like cattle to believe that materialism was the only reality of life.

While Darwinism at its core is the antithesis of the belief in the Creator, Marxism tried to fill the void by claiming that the true God is money itself. Unfortunately, even after the despicable end of Socialism, the poisonous fruits of Marxism are still being eaten by the civilized people as nutritious food.

We are being told that science does not favour the belief in the existence of a Creator. Nevertheless, by its essence science should not say anything about God. It is the domain of philosophy to discuss God. But today science has assumed the position of philosophy when it pokes its nose into metaphysical issues. So be it Darwinism or Marxism, they should be understood more as philosophies of life, than to be pure science. No doubt, all these people were thinkers; they thought to understand life and its intricacies. But since man is essentially fallible, his free-thinking unaided by the revealed guidance always led him to erroneous conclusions.

With the rise of materialism, since the matter was given unquestioned supremacy over faith, mans natural tendency towards greed and gluttony overcame his natural tendency towards generosity and concern for fellow beings. Therefore, by its essence materialism proved to be against religion and religious emotions as it was against the engagement of intellect in search of truth.

PM urges Jamaicans to pay attention to their mental health in 2023 … – Loop News Jamaica

Posted: at 12:11 am

As the new year gets underway, Jamaicans are being implored to take care of their mental health and to seek help if overwhelmed, depressed, or unable to cope.

The advice came from Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, in his address to the nation on New Years Day (January 1).

Find someone to talk to. We Jamaicans tend to think of ourselves as tough, tallawah, able to take on and defeat challenges greater than ourselves. However, over time, this tough attitude has led to an ineffective response to personal and social trauma in our lives, he said.

The Prime Minister noted that the two-year disruption in routine caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has had untold and yet-to-be-understood impacts on mental and physical health and social behaviours.

He lamented that violence has become a normalised response in Jamaicans interactions and called on citizens to make a change in the new year, in this regard.

We can change this by making a resolution, this year, to be gentler with one another, kinder to each other, more forgiving and more loving, Mr. Holness encouraged.

The prime minister further called on Jamaicans to not abandon caution where COVID-19 is concerned, as there is always a lingering threat or consideration of a spike in COVID cases or a new virus emerging.

The prime minister, in welcoming 2023, gave thanks to God for shepherding Jamaica through 2022.

We look forward to all the opportunities the new year presents with a spirit of hope, optimism, determination, and faith, he said.

Losing taking mental toll on Blackhawks: ‘It wears on a lot of guys’ – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 12:11 am

Losing taking toll on Hawks: 'It wears on a lot of guys' originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The Blackhawks started the 2022-23 season as one of the surprise teams in the NHL after winning four of six games despite their roster being stripped down over the summer to kickstart a full-scale rebuild. At one point, they had people wondering whether they might be better than originally thought.

Since then, the Blackhawks are 4-22-4 and have, by far, the worst points percentage over that span at .200. They also have a -59 goal differential in those 30 games.

On Saturday, Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson called their 4-1 loss to the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets "probably one of our worst performances of the year." On Sunday, the Blackhawks blew a 2-0 lead and allowed five unanswered goals in a 5-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks at the United Center.

"It's challenging," Sam Lafferty said on trying to stay positive. "A night like tonight, we had momentum and then it's gone out of nowhere. Tomorrow we just regroup. The good thing about hockey is you get to keep playing. We've got a game in two days, so it's another opportunity for us."

The Sharks, by the way, are near the bottom of the standings, too. This should have been a game where the Blackhawks stacked up fine against the opponent.

Instead, it turned out to be another game that snowballed into a familiar outcome.

"Obviously we were in good position there, 2-0," said Patrick Kane, who scored for the third time in five games. "I dont know if we thought it was going to be an easy game after that for us, but a couple breakdowns, a couple bad breaks, too and all of a sudden youre down 3-2 going into the third."

The Blackhawks have two wins in their last 22 games. They've scored only 18 goals in their last 13 games, and five of those goals came against Columbus on Dec. 23.

The losing is taking a mental toll on the Blackhawks, and how could it not? Somehow, they're finding ways to stay positive throughout it all.

Story continues

"Its tough," Kane said. "Obviously weve been losing a lot of games and it wears on a lot of guys. Guys get frustrated. Its understandable. At the same time, when were in positions like we are tonight, we've got to find a way to not give up so much so easy. Its obviously been a problem all year for us.

"I think we had the right attitude. Guys want to win. Guys are staying positive. Especially tonight, I think we had a new outlook on things after the last year and it being a new year and trying to start off the way we wanted to. It looked like it was going right there for a while and then it wasnt."

Staying active during winter months is vital for seniors overall health – cleveland.com

Posted: at 12:11 am

CLEVELAND -- For many of us, winter can seem like never-ending gloom, with little sunshine and snowy, cold weather. When the winds howl and snow flies, we hunker down by a warm fire with a good book or a favorite television show.

Winter brings with it all kinds of potential hazards. Driving in the snow is dangerous, slippery sidewalks can lead to a fall. The flu spreads like wildfire, COVID-19 remains a threat nationwide, especially for seniors/

And its far too cold to exercise, right?

Or is it?

For seniors, staying active during the winter months can go a long way toward staying healthy. But active doesnt have to mean running a marathon -- or even heading into the cold for a walk or jog.

Simple exercise several times a day is enough to keep muscles and joints in shape, according to Jill Pawlowski, lead resident services director at Vitalia Senior Residence in Strongsville.

Fear of getting hurt is actually what causes many seniors to stay in and be more inactive during the winter months, she said, but, in reality, it is really a move-it-or-lose-it scenario.

Pawlowski suggests seniors try and squeeze in exercise at least once a day, though more often is optimal.

A lot of people, when they get older, think they cant do something, and they stop moving forever. I say, if it feels good, go for it. If it hurts, pay attention to those signals your body is giving you. But when you dont move, your body will stiffen up, so it is important to keep moving -- even if you do only tiny things every day.

Start the day by stretching, whether standing or in a chair, to get the blood flowing to your heart and lungs and loosen those joints and muscles that have tightened up from lying in bed all night. Then do your best to keep moving throughout the day.

If weakness or balance is an issue, Pawlowski suggests using a chair for support or try chair yoga or chair cardio classes that can be found at the local gym, or on YouTube.

You can find any type of exercise videos on YouTube these days that can be pulled up on a smart TV and many streaming services offer an exercise channel or programming, as well, Pawlowski explained. Balance issues or fear of falling, that is still no excuse. Sit in a chair and move your arms, stomp your feet, bend your knees or do jumping jacks sitting down. The important thing is to keep your muscles moving.

Pawlowski says even arthritis pain can be stemmed by small movements.

Almost all of us will experience arthritis pain at some point, she explained. Keeping our joints moving will help with that. It can be as simple as opening and closing our fingers to make a fist or making circles with our wrists to ease the pain in our hands, or flexing elbows, knees and ankles several times a day.

For those seniors who are not homebound, Pawlowski says to consider joining a walking club at the local mall or an indoor track or find a water aerobics class at a gym or YMCA.

Water aerobics are a great way to stay active whether in summer or winter because seniors are in a warm pool where the resistance of the water helps joints and muscles move freely, but without the low impact of jumping around on a floor.

But keeping your body active is not enough. Pawlowski says we need to keep our mind active as well to stay healthy.

Socialization is an important piece of staying healthy and active, she said. We all saw what isolation did to our mental health during COVID. Depression can set in when we stay to ourselves, but it can have an even bigger impact on a seniors memory if they dont keep their mind working, so if they can get out and join a club or exercise class at a senior center or the local Y, it will do a lot for their overall health.

And while we have all heard the mantra to check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program, Pawlowski says it is even more important to listen to your body.

If you have heart or lung or a mobility issue, an individual should talk to their doctor to learn their limitations, but limitations dont mean you should stop moving, Pawlowski said. Exercise doesnt have to be crazy or strenuous to be beneficial. As long as you know your body and dont push yourself too hard, movement will always make you feel better.

If you think youre too old to do something, you are probably not, she said with a laugh. A lot is mental attitude: I can do this, I am strong enough, age is just a number.
