This imaginative display, located at a Bengaluru-based booksellers stall, has captured the attention of many. From whimsical answers to profound ones, the wall boasts a diverse array of responses, showcasing the impact of literature on peoples lives.

Some visitors have reminisced about their school days, crediting textbooks like the 10th NCERT Maths for being life-changing. Others, in a lighter vein, have simply scribbled Jai Shri Ram, a phrase often associated with devotion and optimism.

At the inauguration ceremony, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had called for a need to nurture a book-loving society, saying books alone will help us define our identity.

Bhim Singh Chauhan, an event manager at Bookchor, said the purpose of this wall is to engage the readers as well as know their thoughts to make better business decisions going forward.

Readers have a memory, say, of which was the first book they read and what changes books have brought to their lives. They write the names of books and share their experiences. We also get an idea about which kind of books are in demand in which city, he told PTI.

A noteworthy aspect of this endeavor is that its inclusive, with responses in both English and Hindi, and a few in Punjabi. This aligns well with the book fairs overarching theme: Bahubhashi Bharat Multilingual India.

Responses range from classical masterpieces such as The Lord of the Rings and Bhagavad Gita to contemporary works like Harry Potter and Fifty Shades of Grey. Autobiographies, motivational books, and rare literary gems also find their place on the wall.

Additionally, theres a playful interaction with famous titles, with some visitors associating Fight Club with personal growth and others cherishing childhood reads like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

For the organizers and participants, this wall is more than a mere spectacle. Its an opportunity to understand readers preferences, their connection with literature, and the role books play in shaping their lives. Transhumanism, the merger of humans and technology designed to surpass our limitations, has stopped being a futuristic dream. It is changing fast, and UX/UI designers are poised to be amid this brain-twisting evolution.

So, what is Transhumanism all about?

Transhumanism is a movement aimed at extending the borders of human capabilities. Consider brain-computer interfaces that enable you to change objects using nothing but thoughts (think Professor X!) , wearable technology that keeps tabs on your health and emotions in real-time, and augmented reality in which the digital and physical dimensions flawlessly merge. Sounds pretty wild ?

JMU has exceeded in many areas of study and student life this academic year, such as its number of admissions, research efforts and athletic success, President Jonathan Alger said in his presentation to the Board of Visitors (BoV) on Friday.

The BoV at JMU is composed of eight different committees, each of which focus on different areas of student life and university success, that meet together multiple times a year to discuss both future plans and recent accomplishments.

Fridays meeting took place in the Festival Student and Conference Center and recounted the universitys most recent successes.

Alger said JMU received the largest cash gift to date received by the university, which totaled $6 million and was donated by a 1949 Madison College graduate. The donor was the first woman in American history to command a brigade-sized male unit in the U.S. armed forces, Alger added.

Were very excited to celebrate her legacy, he said.

When discussing admissions, Alger said the total number of freshmen applications for fall 2024 was over 40,000, a 67.5% increase from the number of freshmen applicants in 2021. Alger added that this increase counters national trends, particularly for public universities, and that many colleges and universities nationwide struggle to increase enrollment.

JMU was also recognized as a national research university, which helps in attracting exciting numbers of out-of-state applicants, Alger said. JMUs diverse population is home to many first-generation students and minority groups, he said, that have been historically underrepresented. In fall 2022, 74.3% of JMU's student body identified as white, down over 4% since 2013 but 14.5% higher than the states population, as The Breeze reported in August.

Alger also said there seems to be an increase in the number of international applications received this year, which suggests theyre recovering from COVID. Transfer applications are continuing to be submitted, Alger said, with the number of applicants already over 800.

Alger also highlighted a new civic leadership minor launching this fall, in which students focus on studies implementing practices of foundational leadership, civic sciences and technology, alongside involvement in community civic leadership.

These will be great opportunities for our students, and it will certainly reflect the strategic plan of JMU in terms of high impact learning, because every student you see is going to complete an internship, some sort of research or a portfolio project related to team civic leadership, so really excited to launch this minor, Alger said.

Alger also recognized the success surrounding athletics throughout the university,

JMU was the only Division I school in the nation to qualify for NCAA mens and womens soccer tournaments, and it reached its first-ever bowl game. ESPN also selected JMU as the location of their 30th anniversary College GameDay with a record-breaking crowd of 26,000 fans.

This is the third time we have hosted ESPN GameDay; we are the only non-Power 5 school to have ever done this, Alger said.

Alger praised JMU womens lacrosse for its win over Virginia Tech on Wednesday, which bumped the Dukes up to No. 3 in the country and said the team has potential for a really special season.

During his presentation, Alger made note of a development for the JMU Doctor of Education (EdD) degree, which has recently been approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).

These are not easy programs to get approved its a long process, Alger said, adding that the only thing theyre waiting on before implementing this program is an external review.

Alger also said the Virginia State Board of Education approved the JMU Lab School for Innovation and Career Exploration on Jan. 25, which will offer new opportunities to high school students enrolled in Rockingham County Public Schools (RCPS).

Its a partnership with us, [RCPS] and also Blue Ridge Community College, he said. It will have that emphasis on career pathways and experiential learning. In 11th and 12th grade, students will have the option to take classes for either college credit or dual enrollment.

JMU will receive 12.3 million dollars to fund the program, Alger said.

Alger said online programs offered at JMU have been nationally recognized.

Its interesting to note here, in [the] U.S. News [and World Report], several of our online programs are now ranked in the top 100 nationally, starting with our MBA program at No. 18, Alger said in regards to the recent rankings for online programs.

JMU is also ranked 34th nationally for its MBA program for veterans, 41st for Masters in Computer Information Technology and 97th for the Masters in Nursing program.

JMU periodically conducts economic impact assessments, which were challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic but ultimately proved to be powerful, Alger said.

Despite COVID-19, Alger said the fiscal year 2022 data showed JMU invested $363 million in the Harrisonburg area, $488 million overall in the Commonwealth and generated $22.7 million in local tax revenue.

Alger added that JMUs $592 million in the Harrisonburg area and $763 million invested in the Commonwealth created jobs throughout the community and for every member of the Universitys faculty and staff.

We are the largest economic engine here in this part of the Shenandoah Valley but also across the Commonwealth, Alger said. So again, hats off to everybody who's working in economic development."

The BoV will meet next on April 18 in the Festival Student and Conference Center.

Now, the company is hanging on for dear life.

2U's stock price has been trading below $1 for much of 2024 following a problematic forecast in November and indications that some universities were terminating their contracts. This week, 2U issued weak guidance for the year and warned investors of "substantial doubt about its ability to continue as agoing concern" without additional capital or reduced debt.

2U shares plummeted 59% after the announcement. They fell an additional 10% on Wednesday to close at 34 cents, valuing 2U at $27.5 million.

Analysts at Needham lowered their rating to hold from buy after this week's report, and said the outlook made them more skeptical about 2U's ability to refinance its debt, which stood at more than $900 million at the end of 2023. Cash and equivalents dwindled to $73.4 million from $182.6 million at the end of 2022.

In a statement to CNBC, a 2U spokesperson said the company won't "speculate on potential outcomes."

"2U expects to continue toengage constructively with our lenders and other financial stakeholders as we continue to evaluate options to strengthen our balance sheet and adapt our business to the present landscape," the spokesperson said. "We have sufficient time and liquidity, and we believe we will reach a resolution that will benefit our stakeholders."

The company started in 2008, initially under the name 2Tor, and built a business around the idea of helping universities pick up more students by holding classes online. For years, an outsized amount of 2U's business came from a few colleges.

In 2017, 2U generated more than half its revenue from the University of Southern California (which ran the company's oldest program), Simmons College in Boston and the University of North Carolina. 2U was eventually able to diversify and by 2021 no university client accounted for more than 10% of revenue.

The biggest problem, however, was that 2U's model never proved profitable. 2U has lost money every year as a public company, with its total deficit over the past three years surpassing $830 million. A big chunk of 2U's revenue has gone to pay for sales and marketing, and the company had "to expend substantial financial and other resources on technology and production efforts to support a growing number of offerings," as stated in its 2021 annual report.

Rather than preserve capital, 2U went big on M&A.

In 2019 it paid more than $600 million to buy Trilogy Education, giving 2U more university partners. Then, in 2021, the company announced plans to buy online learning platform edX for about $800 million in cash. That acquisition would give 2U more than 230 education partners, including 19 of the top 20 universities across the globe, the companies said in a joint release when the deal closed.

The plan didn't work. 2U took on debt for the edX acquisition, resulting in "interest payments that exceeded the revenue edX would generate," analysts at Cantor Fitzgerald wrote in a report late last year.

By early 2022, sales growth had slipped into the mid single digits, and by the middle of that year, they were on the decline. Year-over-year revenue dropped for five straight quarters. Multiple rounds of layoffs ensued.

The third quarter of 2023 brought with it a catastrophic development.

2U told investors in its earnings report in November that USC, its flagship customer, was paying $40 million to the company to end their relationship. 2U cut its forecast for the full year. The stock plummeted 57% in one day.

"We thank USC for the role they've had in helping us build our company," then-CEO Chip Paucek said on the earnings call. However, he added that "with the results from the standpoint of new pipeline, the health of the existing portfolio is very strong."

Days later, Paucek stepped down. He was succeeded by then-CFO Paul Lalljie.

Paucek, who didn't respond to a request for comment, is now co-CEO of Pro Athlete Community, a company he helped start in 2022 to help educate professional athletes in business. His former company is now in crisis mode, with its share price in the tank.

Any stocks trading below $1 for 30 consecutive days can lead to a delisting from the Nasdaq. While 2U could potentially institute a reverse split to bolster its share price, that would amount to a temporary fix for a much bigger problem. Cantor Fitzgerald, KeyBanc and Piper Sandler have all discontinued coverage of the stock in recent months, signaling their lack of confidence in the company's future.

Gautam Tambay, co-founder and CEO of online learning startup Springboard, told CNBC that it's sad to see a pioneer in the space struggle.

"There's a big part of me that would like to see them work through these challenges and get to the other side and be able to serve the mission that they started the company to serve, which is ultimately serve their students," Tambay said.

Far removed from its growth days, 2U is just trying to survive.

On this week's earnings call, Lalljie said the company is "embarking on a 12-quarter journey" to reset, which involves cutting expenses and working with lenders on its debt payments.

"We need to shrink to grow," Lalljie said, "so that we can support the balance sheet that we have, so that we can be in a position to negotiate and extend the maturities the upcoming maturities that we have and to ensure that we have a financially resilient company going forward."

According to the 2023 ISC2 Global Workforce Study, the cybersecurity workforce grew to an estimated 5.5 million, signifying a massive growth trajectory.
