Lanesville overcomes loss of top scorer to win second straight title | Indiana High School Athletic Association – IHSAA
Posted: March 1, 2024 at 2:39 am
INDIANAPOLIS A season defined by their fortitude became the defending state champion Lanesville Eagles greatest asset on Saturday morning.
Tested throughout the year by the absence and in-season reemergence of junior center Shelby Allen, who suffered a knee injury last spring, the top-ranked Eagles were dealt another heartbreaking blow late in the first quarter during the IHSAA Class 1A State Finals in Indianapolis.
However, instead of letting the setback crush their repeat hopes, the Eagles (29-1) banded together to overcome 11 lead changes and five ties to defeat fifth-ranked Marquette Catholic, 51-43, and become the first back-to-back Class 1A champion since 2019.
Up 11-10 against Marquette Catholic (24-5) inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Lanesville guard Hadley Crosier, a projected Indiana Junior All-Star, pivoted under the basket and immediately dropped to the court, screaming out in pain and holding her right knee.
Crosier, the teams leading scorer, had four points, two assists and two steals before being helped off the court with 1 minute, 27 seconds left in the first quarter.
The shock hit the Eagles sideline, but with Allens injury and other adversities already dealt with this season, Lanesville adjusted quickly, as Crosier cheered on her team from the bench while wiping tears from her eyes and crutches nearby.
The kind of team that we have, you just saw up there. They have faced adversity this entire year, Lanesville head coach Angie Hinton said.
Our message in the locker room at halftime was that you faced adversity all year long. This is just one more day. I had confidence in these kids.
The Eagles led 27-26 by halftime following a pair of first half ties. The Marquette Catholic Blazers (24-5) jumped out fast with a 9-3 run to start the game behind three consecutive 3-pointers by freshman Marissa Pleasant, who finished with 13 points on 4 of 9 shooting.
A Crosier layup cut into the early deficit, 9-5, before Allen took control in the paint en route to a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds.
Allen was sidelined this season until mid-December with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but the 6-foot-1 big returned to compete in 16 games prior to the State Finals.
With Crosier out the remainder of the title game, Allen hit her stride, while the Lanesville defense found a way to disrupt the Blazers, which won the rebounding battle 41-21 but lost the turnover tussle 24-9.
I thought we were in it. It was a one-possession game for most of the game there, and I thought our kids battled hard, Blazers head coach Katie Collignon said. Just down the stretch, we had some costly turnovers, didnt hit our shots and their free throws really helped them late. Those mistakes ended up in a situation where youre down five and you cant claw back with about a minute to go. Im proud of my girls effort. They were tough and resilient as they always are, but I think this one stung a little bit more than we imagined.
Sophomore Laniah Davis, who was averaging 20 points per game, struggled early on, but in the second quarter she scored 10 straight points to pull the margin within one possession entering halftime. She finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.
By the end of the third quarter, the Blazers led 33-31, holding the Eagles scoreless from the field (0-for-8). A pair of foul shots by junior Hylton Brumley kept the Eagles from getting shut out, but in the fourth, a clutch 3-pointer by senior Emma Davis broke the games final tie, 38-35.
We just knew we were all going to have to step up. Hadleys really good with her jump shot. Shes real good getting to the basket, but we found other ways to score. Shelby inside, shes a beast, Brumley said. We had to step up, state championship game. We werent going to lose it, and we were going to do everything we could.
Crosier averaged 15.8 ppg for the Eagles this season, and defensively, Lanesville limited their opponents to 33.5 points allowed.
Marquette Catholic pulled within one possession of reclaiming the lead four times late in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles combination of Davis (5 points), Allen and Brumley (15 points), who shot 5 of 6 from the free-throw line in the final minute, cushioned their advantage.
The Blazers shot 44 percent in the first quarter and 50 percent in the second, but those numbers dipped to 25 and 31.3 percent in the second half due to Lanesvilles zone and Marquette Catholics mounting turnovers.
Its almost like we beat ourselves. Those possessions down the stretch. We didnt finish, Collignon said. Those are the toughest losses to take. You think, if we hang on to that ball, dont turn it over there, make that extra pass. What if? Thats the hardest thing to do at the end of the season. Not to say we were actually beaten, but we beat ourselves.
The Blazers had three players in double figures, including junior Livia Balling with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Marquette Catholic was the last Class 1A team to repeat in 2018 and 2019. With Crosier out the last three quarters, the Blazers nearly prevented the Eagles repeat, but Lanesville found inspiration through experience.
In practice every day, we compete against each other, and we give them so many things to do so that when an offense breaks down, they know how to go make a play, Hinton said. We certainly did make some plays, and even though Hadley wasnt able to be on the floor, she has been that leader in practice every day. They had to go against her defense.
Having to take her off the floor was losing a very important piece to everything we do on both ends of the court, but I just felt like those kids knew what to do. We just had to make some adjustments to let it work for them.
The Eagles, in turn, worked together to secure their 13th straight state tournament victory, 57th win in 60 contests overall and third state championship in coach Hintons 18th season overall (sixth at Lanesville). Hinton led 4A New Albany to the state title in 1999.
I dont think a lot of people get to know when their last game is going to be, so to get to know that is unimaginable. But to be able to do it with us four (seniors) and the girls that weve been playing with for a long time means a lot to us four. Just to be able to finish with something this big and make history, said Lanesville senior Ava Kerr, who had two points and six steals.
The key was composure, going 11 of 15 from the free-throw line in the second half and logging 19 total steals as a team.
When Hadley went down that was a tough emotional situation for all of us. We had to be very careful as coaches how we handled that because I had to keep the confidence of my team because I really believed in my team, Hinton said. But then your heart is breaking for a kid on the bench. To have an injury like that was really, really tough. I had to really dig deep down to keep everything consistent, calm and cool. Weve taken a lot of hits this year, but no bigger hit than we took today. But the kids stepped up.
Crosier, who suffered a probable anterior cruciate ligament tear, hugged almost every Eagle after the final horn sounded.
I was on the bench, and I started feeling sorry for myself, and I was like, these girls are doing this, and I cant think about me because this is for everybody. This is our community, Crosier said. Yeah, I went down, and I probably wont be back for a while, but these girls, I just couldnt be any prouder.

Eyewash and ridiculous -- these were the terms the High Court used to describe the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) report on the tragic death of a child from anesthesia during a routine circumcision.
The High Court further characterized the report as an attempt to evade liability and expressed concern regarding the presence of mafias. For the average citizen, such a scathing rebuke of this crucial government agency could be viewed as an indictment of the helplessness we face when dealing with our medical establishment.
Despite previous media reports of alleged medical negligence or mistreatment, very little seems to have come of these. This may in part be due to the intricate and resource-intensive nature of the legal system. Furthermore, families grappling with such losses, undergo severe trauma as it is; revisiting that in the courts may further heighten their suffering.
Hence, the importance of institutions such as the DGHS in protecting peoples lives. When the High Court describes their investigation as eyewash and ridiculous, where is the everyday citizen left to go?
In 2011, film director Tareque Masud and cinematographer Ashfaque Munier Mishuk met their untimely and tragic deaths in a highway accident. Despite the outpouring of grief, little progress seems to have been made in road safety. Tareques spouse, Catherine Masud, continues her ground-breaking legal battle to ensure that road crash victims and their families may have a means to be legally compensated for their losses.
In 2018, two high school students were killed when a speeding bus ploughed into them. Young students marched on to the streets to demand justice, only to be forcefully dispersed later.
Last year, a daughter, mother, and grandmother were struck by a bus while sitting at a stand. The daughter was luckily spared, the mother lost her leg, and the grandmother died after two months. The family has spent over Tk12 lakh in medical costs by borrowing and mortgaging all their assets. The bus owner gave them a take it or leave it offer of BDT 200,000. If they didnt accept, he said see you in court. The family settled. Meanwhile, road accidents have emerged as the leading cause of disability in the country.
Is it little surprise then that powerful forces, whether in the medical profession or elsewhere, continue to enjoy absolute impunity?
The media has also been reporting on the alleged negligence in the treatment of a young man who tragically died from a routine endoscopy procedure at a well-known hospital. It is reported that multiple tests indicated he was at higher risk for general anesthesia.
The doctor responsible has come on record to state that he was unaware of a particular health condition and that the patient opted for general anesthesia. This reminds me of the time when, as lay persons, we sought stenting instead of open heart surgery for our mother. The doctor advised against it, deeming it absolutely crazy for one of the critical blockages.
We expect doctors, as trained professionals, to know better about the health risks. If multiple reports indicate heightened risks, why would patients be subjected to general anesthesia, especially for non-life threatening conditions?
Where are the doctors of yesteryears who would thoroughly examine the patient, delve into their family history, and use tests to confirm what they already knew? What happened to compassionately viewing patients as fellow human beings rather than mere ticket numbers?
Then there is the role of the hospital. Reports indicate that the young man was among a long line of patients awaiting the procedure that day. The doctor is said to have arrived late at night, hours after the scheduled operating time, to perform a high volume of procedures.
Does this kind of factory production-line approach fall under set standards? The hospital spokesperson claimed that they follow WHO protocols, yet they are quoted in another report as stating that the person who administered the anesthesia was from outside and not affiliated with the hospital! It seems they do not even know who exactly administered it.
In the latest news, the DGHS swiftly shut down a healthcare facility following the heartbreaking death of another child from anesthesia during circumcision, with the doctors in question arrested. The health minister has vowed decisive action, emerging as our beacon of hope. As a technocrat minister with a profound understanding of the importance of preserving human life, we pray that he will be able to withstand the inevitable pressures and ensure justice for the families.
Every year, Bangladeshis with the means to do so, travel abroad in droves for medical treatment, reflecting a lack of faith in the domestic medical establishment. Those who do not have the means, have to settle with what is available here. Furthermore, it is not always realistic or practicable to travel outside.
Hence, as consumers of healthcare services, it is imperative that we take greater control of our decision-making process. While I acknowledge that for many, such steps may seem unattainable due to limited resources, power dynamics, and access to information, we need to start somewhere.
First, it is crucial to adopt a healthy lifestyle to minimize conditions that would compel us to visit doctors in the first place. As it is, we live in a stressful environment where our capital has one of the worst air quality in the world, our foods are laced with chemicals, our roads are congested, and our water polluted. Embracing a healthy lifestyle means eating in moderation, eating at the right time, avoiding harmful foods and products, exercising, meditating, getting sufficient sleep, nurturing positive relationships -- the list goes on.
Second, adopting a healthy lifestyle is not solely the concern of the middle-aged or elderly; its imperative to start early. What we do to our bodies when we are young impacts us when we grow old. The young tend to think that their bodies will fix itself. It may not.
Third, always ask family and friends for advice. Try to seek out a doctor in your circle who can be your counsel. Having that relationship can provide you with information as to which healthcare provider may be best suited for you.
Fourth, dont be unduly influenced by titles or awards. Do not solely go by social media marketing when it comes to your life. We know how social media can be manipulated. Rely on trusted sources of information.
Fifth, it is essential to consider how a doctor treats you. Do they patiently answer your questions? Do they give time? Are they empathetic? This level of personal care may be challenging in a densely populated country such as ours, but we need to start somewhere.
Safi Khan works in the social sector.

Angela Rayner Faces Backlash Over Right-to-Buy Profits Amidst Political Hypocrisy Claims – BNN Breaking
Posted: at 2:39 am
When the news broke that Angela Rayner, deputy leader of the Labour Party, had profited from the sale of her ex-council housea purchase made through the government's right-to-buy scheme she later criticizedheadlines were ablaze with accusations of hypocrisy. Yet, beneath the surface of this controversy lies a nuanced story of adversity, ambition, and the complex relationship between personal success and political ideology. This is not merely a tale of political contradiction, but a reflection of the challenges faced by working-class individuals navigating policies set by the very system they aspire to reform.
Rayner's journey from a working-class teenage mother to a prominent political figure is emblematic of the very essence of the right-to-buy scheme introduced by Lady Thatcher. Designed to empower working-class families to own their homes, the scheme has been both lauded and criticized for its impact on the availability of affordable housing. Rayner's decision to buy and later sell her council house, resulting in a 48,000 profit, has been scrutinized against her political stance to overhaul the scheme. Critics, led by voices in the Daily Mail, accuse her of benefiting from a policy she now seeks to reform, a charge she refutes by highlighting Labour's intent to address the scheme's 'unfair discounts'.
The Conservative Party's attack on Rayner for her 'hypocrisy' unveils a deeper irony. It was, after all, a Conservative policy that enabled Rayner's home ownership. The criticism seems to overlook the broader socio-economic context in which such policies operate, and the personal resilience required to navigate them. As Rayner's story unfolds in the public eye, it challenges the narrative that personal success under existing policies disqualifies one from advocating for systemic change. Many working-class Britons might see Rayner's journey not as hypocrisy but as a testament to overcoming adversity. This perspective suggests that the Conservative strategy may backfire, as it underestimates the public's ability to discern the difference between personal achievement and political conviction.
As the debate rages on, the question of how this controversy will affect Rayner's political career and the Labour Party's relationship with its working-class base remains open. The narrative spun by the Conservativesthat benefiting from a policy equates to endorsing its every outcomefails to capture the complex realities of individuals living under the policies they later seek to reform. In defending her actions, Rayner has emphasized the importance of affordable social housing, a stance that resonates with many who have navigated the challenges of the housing market. The public's reaction, thus far, suggests a nuanced understanding of Rayner's position, recognizing her personal success story as separate from her political ambitions to address the injustices within the housing system.
As this saga unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the intricate dance between personal history and public service. Angela Rayner's story, embroiled in controversy, underscores the broader discourse on social mobility, the right to own property, and the responsibilities of political leadership. While the Conservative Party's accusations aim to weaken Rayner's political stance, they inadvertently highlight the success of a working-class woman navigating the very system she seeks to reform. Whether this controversy will erode or embolden her political standing remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the conversation about the right-to-buy scheme, and the broader issues it encapsulates, is far from over.

Bending Toward Relief: How Yoga is Becoming a Key Player in Managing Chronic Low Back Pain – Medriva
Posted: at 2:39 am
Imagine the human spine as a complex, delicate structure, a series of bones and muscles intricately linked, designed for both stability and flexibility. Now, picture the distress and limitation when this marvel of engineering is in pain, specifically, chronic low back pain (CLBP) a condition that affects millions globally, diminishing their quality of life. Recent investigations into the ancient practice of yoga have shed light on its potential not just as a physical exercise, but as a profound therapeutic tool for those ensnared by the persistent ache in their backs.
Yoga, with its holistic approach to well-being, incorporates various poses designed to strengthen back muscles, improve flexibility, and promote overall spine health. An Italian research team specializing in rehabilitative medicine conducted a pivotal study, engaging 21 women in an 8-session yoga program. This regimen spanned four weeks and featured nearly 30 postures, breathwork, and mindfulness practices. The findings, published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, spotlighted a significant reduction in pain intensity and an improved neuromuscular response during spinal flexion among participants, underlining yoga's positive impact on low back pain.
In an era where digital platforms have transcended traditional boundaries, the realm of health and wellness is no exception. A recent small study underscored the efficacy of online yoga sessions in alleviating chronic low back pain. Despite the virtual format, participants noted significant improvements in muscle function and pain perception, thus broadening yoga's accessibility to those hampered by physical limitations or geographical isolation. This digital approach not only democratizes access to therapeutic yoga but also emphasizes the importance of controlled breathing techniques in stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation, and enhancing overall well-being.
While the evidence tilts favorably towards yoga as a beneficial intervention for chronic low back pain, the scientific community calls for caution and further research. The studies, though promising, underscore the necessity of larger-scale investigations to substantiate yoga's long-term efficacy in managing CLBP. Moreover, the specificity of yoga postures for back pain relief highlights the critical need for guidance from physical therapists or knowledgeable yoga instructors, ensuring that individuals with back pain approach their practice with safety and awareness.
As we stand on the cusp of integrating traditional wellness practices like yoga into mainstream medical paradigms, the journey of individuals suffering from chronic low back pain towards a pain-free existence appears more hopeful. The narrative of yoga, stretching beyond mere physical exercise to a therapeutic ally, beckons a future where holistic and conventional treatments converge for the betterment of global health.

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! Download the app.
I dont want to go to yoga.
Id much rather stay put in my favorite corner of the couch because Ive finally arranged the pillows just right and buried myself in this blanket. I simply cannot fathom leaving this position to do a Sun Salutation.
Id much rather scroll through every single app on my phone. Ive already checked email, of course, but I still have not looked at the weather forecast for the rest of the month, or checked if Ive received any new LinkedIn messages in the last three hours, or if the money in my bank account is still there. There are many apps to check, you see. And I cant check them if Im in Warrior 3.
I dont want to go to yoga.
Id much rather think about the snacks in my pantry and debate sweet versus salty. Or maybe order delivery. Indian? Thai? Sushi? Ah, yes, theres far more pleasure found tip-toeing to find treats in the kitchen than in hearing the teacher say come into Pigeon.
Id much rather check out whats on Netflix. I mean, Ive watched everything already, but theres that series Ive been thinking about rewatching. And then there might be something new on Hulu or Apple TV+. After all, why go into Upward Bow when I could watch a new true crime show?
I dont want to go to yoga.
Id much rather see what multi-level marketing my high school nemesis is hustling on Facebook, watch my friends baby trying avocado on Instagram, or catch up on cat videos on TikTok. And look, a wedding! Forget Plank Pose; I must thoroughly assess the dress she chose.
Id much rather slow blink at my cat or have a staring contest. Sure, he has a 95 percent success rate, but Im really gunning to inflate my five percent. And doesnt science show that playing with your pet is a form of relaxation? Who then really needs breathwork and meditation?
I dont want to go to yoga.
Id much rather reorganize my closet. After all, a new season is coming and Ive had the itch to put clothes I no longer wear in a bag, put said bag into the trunk of my car, and wait seven more months before dropping the bag off for donation. And now that I see the options in my closet, Id much rather put on my sweats than a yoga mindset.
Id much rather practice Savasana from home. Underneath the covers, in my pjs, with my previously chosen snack. Besides, I can always ask Alexa to turn on a guided visualization so that I can stay, quite comfortably, in my state of stagnation.
I dont want to go to yoga.
Alas, Netflix just asked if I was still watching (the nerve!) and my neck is kind of hurting from looking down at my phone. The thought comes up sneakily, maybe I should go to yoga?
I look at my yoga mat, sitting lonely by the door, and think about the cold lavender-scented towels doled out after class. Would it really be so bad? I need to wash my hair anyway, so I may as well get all sweaty. I look to see if I can make it to class at 6:30. Google Maps tells me I can make it in twenty.
I didnt want to go to yoga.
The teacher asks us to think of an intention. My intention today is to return to my couch as soon as possible. But then they remind us to relax our shoulders and only then do I realize how much tension Ive been holding. And after a full day lounging in Couch Pose, I dont so much mind Chair Pose. And with my new yoga glow, it shows.
Now its after class, and I feel criminally fantastic. That neck ache? Gone! That anxiety that was snaking around my chest all week? Vanished! That pose Ive been trying to get into for months and months? Crushed it! And Im not one to gloat, but I felt pretty strong in Boat.
I didnt want to go to yoga.
But now? Im one happy lady heading home after Happy Baby. And you know what? Forget whats in my pantry or on TV. When I get back, Im going to fall asleep early and wake up for the 8:30.

On days when the sofa feels even more inviting, and braving the outdoors requires a little bit of extra effort, then this jumpsuit could be the remedy for getting you out and om-ing.
This all-in-one jumpsuit takes style and convenience to the next level. Its a great one-and-done option for chucking on without having to think about matching top to bottom. It also lets you move freely, although the fitted waistband and cuffed ankles mean it will say (comfortably) in place during downward dogs, too.
Fancy a bit of additional coverage? Theres also a long-sleeved version for a little extra warmth.

Yoga and Energy Healing in a Former Hudson Valley Mansion – The New York Times

When the Ranch at Malibu opened in 2010 as a luxury health resort on 200 acres in Californias Santa Monica Mountains, its approach was somewhat radical: Guests signed up for a full week of group hikes, fitness classes, spa treatments, nutrition consults and communal, organic meals without caffeine, gluten, soy or dairy. The goal, says its founder Alex Glasscock, was for people to mentally and physically reset and recharge. On April 15, a second location, the Ranch at Hudson Valley, is scheduled to open near Tuxedo Park, N.Y., in a slate-and-stone lakefront mansion surrounded by state parks. Glasscock hopes the 25-room property, which he describes as like a big, luxury dorm, will facilitate connections between those who stay. Guests will do yoga under the ornate plaster ceiling of the former ballroom and, in Glasscocks ideal world, come to dinner in their pajamas and robes. This new outpost offers a few additional treatments including colonics and energy healings which incorporate techniques such as hypnosis and sound therapy. In winter, guests can sled or snowshoe, and in summer theres paddleboarding on the lake. The Ranch has also relaxed a few of the restrictions: You can book three nights at the Hudson Valley property instead of the seven required in Malibu, and, in concession to the most common request of all, caffeine is no longer taboo organic Nicaraguan coffee is served at breakfast in both locations. Reservations open Feb. 21; rooms from $3,280 per person for three nights including accommodations, meals and programming; theranchhudsonvalley.com.

For much of the 20th century, the Michigan furniture company Herman Miller was the star-maker of American design, responsible for turning Isamu Noguchi, George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames into household names. But the brands archive, which spans 119 years, also includes contributions from hundreds of talents whom history has overlooked, and whose work Herman Millers team began resurfacing through an ongoing collectible poster series launched in 2021. Among those getting their due in the projects latest edition, which debuts next week, are Linda Powell and Barbara Loveland, who worked in the companys graphics department in the 80s and 90s: Powells rainbow-striped 1978 Ideas magazine cover is now a poster, as is Lovelands 1981 promotional print for the Wilkes Modular sofa (aka the Chiclet). The standout of the collection, though, is a group of three abstract Op Art compositions by the Japanese American graphic designer Tomoko Miho; as head of George Nelsons design team and later of her own firm, she counted among her clients not just Herman Miller but Noguchi, MoMA and the Smithsonian. Shes someone who did the work but wasnt, as many women werent, quite celebrated, says Amy Auscherman, Herman Millers archive director. She created a lot of bangers, so its great to see her get the recognition she deserves. On sale Feb. 27; from $245, store.hermanmiller.com.
The 40-year-old designer Adam Wade Wagner had for years traveled internationally doing visual merchandising for a fashion retailer when, stuck at home in Brooklyn Heights during the pandemic, he was finally able to focus on his leather-working hobby. At first, he was drawn to the hides themselves, because he knew that New Yorks garment district was among the worlds best places to source artisanal, vegetable-tanned options imported from Italy. When I buy, I gauge for the leathers structural qualities, and ones that feel like skin versus vinyl or anything artificial and are finished so they age beautifully, says Wagner, who trained as an architect and cites Brutalism as a central influence. Eventually he decided to produce a line of bags that he sells online, every one whether a heavy black leather carryall or a slouchy olive green suede tote made from a distinct leather that suits its silhouette and purpose. With saddle-stitched construction, minimalist lines and a neutral color palette, each item is crafted individually by hand from a bench covered with traditional tools in the corner of Wagners living room: Hes inspired by the durability and functionality upheld by stalwart workwear brands like Filson, even if hes offering a more rarified product. I could never find a bag that I liked, he says. I ended up with something thats purely leather its important to manipulate it as little as possible. From $650, adamwadewagner.com.
