Fast Food Gets a Vegan Makeover at These 12 Plant-Based Restaurant Chains – VegNews

Posted: March 17, 2024 at 2:36 am

The vegan movement has reached a critical tipping point. Case in point: the abundance of vegan options in fast-food restaurants. That box has been checked. But now, were ushering in the era of all-vegan fast-food chains. Its not just Veggie Grill anymore. Plant-based drive-thrus and fast-casual eateries slinging vegan beefy burgers and fries are cropping up across the country, and we are here for it. In fact, were so excited, weve gathered all our favorites below. But first, what do vegans even eat for fast food, exactly?

Jump to the chains

Fast-food menu staples like fries (unless theyre cooked in beef fat, side-eye McDonalds), soda, hash browns (again, check for beef fat), and burger buns are often vegan by default. This means that, for years, vegans have been heading to fast-food chains and getting creative with the menu. (Order a beef burger without the beef, and load it up with salad, sauce, and fries, you get the idea.)

But now, as fast-food chains have started embracing plant-based meat options, its getting easier than ever to enjoy fast food without the animals. Theres the easily veganized Impossible Whopper at Burger King, for example, as well as the Beyond Famous Star at Carls Jr.

While places like the UK and the Netherlands have the McPlant burger, McDonalds is still seriously lagging behind on vegan options in the US (for now, anyway). But that said, it is still possible to order vegan food from the countrys most popular fast-food joint. If youre hungry and have no other options available, weve put together this guide to eating vegan at McDonalds.

McDonalds UK

But if youre close to any of these vegan fast-food chains below (particularly plant-based McDonalds copycat Mr.Charlies), the truth is, you wont need the golden arches. In fact, before you cruise through any drive-thru of your nearest mainstream chain, check to see if one of these vegan fast-food locations is nearby. You wont be disappointed.

Cate Furman

Founded in 2006 in Irvine, CA, this national vegan chain was frying up plant-based chicken wings way before it was a thing. In fact, Veggie Grill predates the buffalo cauliflower trend.

In 2023, fans of the chain noticed several locations had mysteriously shuttered. From 30 locations across the country to just over 15, customers feared the end of Veggie Grill was near. Enter: Next Level Burger. In January 2024, Next Level Burger announced it had acquired its competitor, renaming the chain Veggie Grill by Next Level.

Today, fans can still enjoy Veggie Grills beloved menu, with discontinued menu classics expected to return, according to Next Level Burger CEO Matthew de Gruyter. So enjoy themac and cheese, Sante Fe Chicken Sandwich, and sweet potato fries, Veggie Grill isnt going anywhere anytime soon.

Next Level Burger

After Next Level Burger acquired Veggie Grill earlier this year, together, the two chains comprise one of the largest vegan fast-food businesses in the world. At the time of writing, the two chains exist independently of one another; in other words, there are no plans for the two chains to merge into one for now.

Fans of Next Level Burger can still walk into any location and find, well, next-level vegan burgers.Get a burger, perhaps even a chicken sandwich and crinkle-cut fries, but the Next Level Shakes are well, you understand. Find it here

Native Foods

This fast-casual chain originally leaned more toward healthy bowls, salads, and sandwiches, but since its founder chef Tanya Petrovna sold the restaurant in 2012, the menu has steadily swapped out much of the greens, grains, and beans for stacked burgers and one-off fast-food specialty items. Patrons can still find some of Petrovnas original creations in the form of the Taco Salad or Twister Wrap, but those looking for a more savory spin can opt for sweet potato fries, buffalo chicken tenders, and a BBQ Brisket Burger. In recent years, Native Foods has shuttered multiple outposts across the country, but today, residents of Palm Springs, CA; Glendale, CO; and Chicago, IL can still enjoy this vegan. Local tip: get dessert. The oatmeal creme pie and peanut butter parfait have outlasted the sweeping menu revisions and are the cherry on top of your vegan meal. Find it here

Slutty Vegan

Right now, there are four locations of the chain in the Los Angeles area, but Hart has big dreams for the brand. The goal is to see Hart Houses right smack dab in the middle of where you would see a McDonalds, a Burger King, a Chick-fil-A, [and] a Wendys [so] people can have the option for a plant-based taste, as well, he told James Corden on The Late Late Show.

A Vegan Thai Restaurant That Started as a Bangkok Street Cart – Eater NY

Posted: at 2:36 am

Vegan cafs, bakeries, and restaurants are a vital part of New York dining. Yet these establishments dont always get the coverage they merit. This series of stories this week by Mayukh Sen highlights immigrant-owned, plant-based eateries across the city and the people behind them.

Sommay Jaijong doesnt miss the frog curry she grew up eating as a girl. The perfumes of dill, lemongrass, and galangal would punch up a dish that she ate happily and often when she was growing up in a village in the Sisaket province in Thailands northeast.

Hers was a family of farmers. Vegetables and rice grew in abundance on the land, and meals that incorporated the snakes, rats, and grasshoppers roaming around her shaped her early palate.

Thats why we eat what food we have, Jaijong remembers one day. We cannot choose.

She looks back on these dishes fondly, but its been decades since shes had them. Jaijong, who goes by the name May Kaidee (May is her nickname, a variation of her given name, while she says that Kaidee means, roughly, good business in Thai), is the owner and proprietor of a constellation of vegan Thai restaurants spread across Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and New York (plus two cooking schools in Thailand).

New Yorks sole outpost of May Kaidee now on the Lower East Side (215 E. Broadway at Clinton Street) her first restaurant in the United States, which shes been operating since 2016, after her Thailand locations is tucked away in a basement with a karaoke machine in the back. Here, she serves coral-hued clumps of pumpkin hummus woven with coconut milk, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, and turmeric; and specials like tuna salads made from soy protein alongside lettuce, Thai herbs, sticky rice, and cucumbers. (Beyond the restaurant named for herself, she also operates Chakra, a Thai vegan spot with Indian-inspired inflections, in the East Village.)

Jaijong wears a plum-purple flower in her hair and caparisons herself in village wear from the Isan region she once called home. She offers regular cooking classes, fruit carving classes, and dance classes at May Kaidee. She sees her restaurant as a vehicle for spreading the beauty of her homeland. Cooking, dancing, she says. I bring the culture.

Jaijong fell into restaurant work accidentally. As a child, shed wake up in the morning to hear cows and buffalo crooning around her. She didnt go to high school. Her mother would rise early to cook for the family, and Jaijong would pitch in.

She resigned herself to thinking farm work, which she loved, was all life would have to offer her until 1988, when an aunt of hers said she needed Jaijongs help. Her aunt had a food cart in Bangkok; the place didnt have a name, but it served vegan and vegetarian food. Jaijong jumped at the chance to go to the big city.

She was fifteen when she made her way to Bangkok, bringing essentials like her mosquito net and bedding. Once there, she put herself through her paces by doing prep work, like cutting vegetables. Though she didnt know a lick of English upon setting foot in the city, interacting with customers forced her to learn. Jaijong was cooking vegan food then boiled eggplants with basil, summer rolls, green curries with tofu and mushrooms but she wasnt vegan herself. She still loved the taste of chicken.

But Bangkok was a hectic change of pace for her compared to more regimented village life; the city never seemed to slumber. She was eating until midnight some nights, and this rhythm began to hamper her health.

By 1993, her aunt retired, leaving Jaijong to manage the business on her own. This new responsibility coincided with an increasing awareness of her bodys limits. When she ate fried rice with chicken, she would notice herself subconsciously moving the chicken to the side of her plate, as if her soul were trying to tell her something.

She started to realize that her constitution couldnt really withstand milk, either. Eggs upset her stomach, too, so she chucked those. She eliminated oyster sauce and fish sauce; soy sauce, sugar, and lime would suffice as flavoring agents. After ten years, she was fully vegan for reasons relating to her health.

Those years were boom times for her business: She upsized the original iteration from a humble cart to a more proper storefront, and then opened a second location in the city of Chiang Mai, in Thailands north.

One of those tourists was Eric Brent, founder of the website HappyCow, an online citadel for vegans. As Jaijong remembers it, he noticed that her restaurant didnt have a name, but he wanted to list it on the website. So she decided it would be christened after herself: May Kaidee.

Television appearances on Thai, French, and Canadian airwaves soon became routine for Jaijong. Her patrons begged her to write an English-language cookbook, and she obliged. (It was first published over two decades ago and has been reprinted twice; copies line shelves of the restaurant.) More locations spread throughout Bangkok, and one even in the neighboring country of Cambodia, would follow. This attention nudged her out of Thailand in the aughts as she began to tour the world cooking.

Soon enough, she was eyeing a global expansion. One of her Bangkok visitors, Jonathan Daniel now one of her three employees at this Manhattan location encouraged her to open in New York. With his help, she made the leap, moving to the city in 2016 and initially starting the restaurant near Murray Hill. She relocated to her current, larger place in 2018.

Even through the worst of it, Jaijong has prided herself on her restaurants resilience. It was a time when each of her locations in Southeast Asia closed for two years, though the New York satellite remained open for delivery.

Two of her restaurants in Thailand, one in Bangkok and the other in Chiang Mai, woke up again after the pandemic subsided. Jaijong has since resumed her work in spreading her vision of Thai vegan cooking full-throttle.

Jaijong doesnt worry about making gobs of money; she just wants to earn enough to pay for herself and for her employees to survive. Peace, she says, is more important than material luxury. After all, that quest for health however one may define that loaded word is what drew her to veganism in the first place.

When you have enough healthy, she says, You have enough.

The 10 Best Vegan Protein Powders of 2024, Reviewed and Tested – Health.com

Posted: at 2:36 am

Vegan protein powder might be a good choice if you struggle to eat enough protein, are always on the go, or eat plant-based and exercise regularly. Mary Wirtz, MS, RD, CSSD, a board-certified sports dietitian, suggests vegan protein powders can be an easy, convenient, and cost-effective way to get in more protein, especially when you follow a plant-based diet. Consuming protein after a workout (in addition to some carbohydrates) can also help support muscle recovery.

When selecting a protein powder, we recommend checking the type of protein it contains, any added ingredients (especially if you have food allergies), and whether it is third-party tested. We took these factors into consideration as well as testing more than 60 different protein powders ourselves to rate each powder for taste, texture, aftertaste, and smell. We sifted through all these options to recommend only the ones that we think taste, smell, and mix the best.

A registered dietitian on our Medical Expert Board also reviewed this article for medical and scientific accuracy regarding what to look for in vegan protein powders, the best sources of vegan protein, and whether they're just as good as whey protein.

Dietary supplements are minimally regulated by the FDA and may or may not be suitable for you. They also may interact with other supplements or medications you are taking. Our team of registered dietitians reviews supplements according to our rigorous dietary supplement methodology. We also had a registered dietitian review this page for its scientific accuracy. Please always speak with a healthcare provider to discuss any supplements you plan on taking.

We go into detail about What To Pay Attention To for vegan protein powders, but here are some things to know before shopping.

Amazon

We love that Ritual Daily Shake 50+ pea-based protein powder is not only third-party tested but also delicious. It blended really well with other ingredients and made a thick, pleasant, creamy smoothie. The flavor wasnt overpowering and had a pleasant, slight sweetness.

While this protein powder is suggested for adults aged 50 and over, note it's ideal for adults of any age, as its higher in calcium and choline in comparison to other vegan protein powders. Choline is a key nutrient for brain health, and calcium helps promote bone strength, which can be especially important in lowering the risk of osteoporosis as we age. Another distinguishing ingredient in this supplement is Calcium -Hydroxy -Methylbutyrate (HMB), which can help promote muscle strength and protect against muscle decline in older adultsan important consideration because we tend to lose muscle mass with age. We love these thoughtful, research-backed nutrients in this powder, but know Ritual also has a Daily Shake 18+ without these additions and the same delicious taste and ingredient quality we love.

When a product is third-party tested, you know that the product is not contaminated with high levels of heavy metals or other harmful contaminants. This protein powder is both Informed Protein certified and Informed Sport certified, meaning it has been tested to ensure its protein content is accurate and that it doesnt contain any banned substances for athletes. Plus, all of the ingredients in this product are traceable, meaning you can check their website to see exactly where the ingredients are sourced from.

If you're mixing this protein powder with just water, you might prefer a sweeter or more strongly flavored protein powder.

If youre looking for a simple and affordable protein powder, we recommend Now Sports Pea Protein. Pea protein is a complete protein, which means it contains all nine essential amino acids that our body cant produce on its own.

We like that this powder packs an impressive 24 grams of protein per scoop, as this is considered high for a vegan protein powder. Each serving also includes an impressive 45% DV of Iron. Iron is needed for the transport of oxygen throughout your body, including muscle cells. This protein powder is Informed Sport certified, making this a great choice for athletes and anyone wanting a protein powder with strong third-party testing.

The Now Sports protein powder contains only one ingredientpea proteinmaking it more allergen-friendly and easy to add to a variety of foods or beverages. We found it blended well with other ingredients in a smoothie, and we also recommend using this in food like soups to boost protein content.

This protein has a slight pea-like aftertaste even when blended with other ingredients, so if you dont love that earthy flavor, this may not be the best pick for you. It is also higher in sodium compared to some other choices, with a 14% Daily Value per serving; though this could be helpful for replacing electrolytes after exercise, as sodium is lost in sweat. However, some may not want or need the higher sodium level.

Amazon

Sprout Livings Epic Protein Vanilla Lucuma Powder uses its plant protein blend mixed with vanilla lucuma blend to make a tasty, protein-packed powder. This supplement is third-party tested for ingredient amounts and safe levels of heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury.

In our testing, we were pleased with the delightful taste of this protein powderit scored some of the highest ratings for taste. It is subtly sweet even when just mixed with water. The lucuma and baobab fruit, cinnamon, ginger root, and vanilla bean give it a creamy and spiced flavor that is unique compared to your traditional vanilla.

We also like that each serving has 20 grams of protein and 30% DV of iron from a blend of yellow peas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sacha inchi, and cranberry seeds. This supplement is also a good source of vitamin C (30% DV). This is note-worthy because vitamin C can help absorb iron more effectively, is needed to make collagen, and is an antioxidant.

One of the sources of fiberJerusalem artichokemay cause some digestive discomfort, like bloating, for those who are sensitive to inulin or who follow a low FODMAP diet for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Walmart

Soy is another good vegan protein source, and Now Sports won our top spot for soy protein because it has one simple ingredientsoy protein isolate. It also has strong third-party testing, as it is Informed Sport certified. It contains 20 grams of protein per serving and is lower in sodium than many competitors, with only 7% Daily Value (DV) of sodium per serving. We also like that its a good source of calcium and iron, with one serving providing 15% DV each for calcium and iron.

You may have heard about the fears of phytoestrogens with soy, but research suggests soy is generally safe and may even benefit heart health. This is through its ability to significantly reduce total and LDL cholesterol, or "bad" cholesterol." So, if you're not a fan of the more common pea protein as a vegan option, this pick could be a good fit for you.

If you arent a big fan of the taste of soy, then this may not be your ideal protein powder because we found the soy taste to be quite noticeable even when mixed into a smoothie. We tested the unflavored option, but Now Sports also has soy protein powder in chocolate and vanilla flavors.

Typically, vegan protein powders tend to have higher amounts of fiber in comparison to whey-based proteins, but unfortunately, this one doesn't have any fiber. If you blend it in a smoothie, make sure to add some fruit, leafy greens, chia seeds, or ground flaxseeds to increase the fiber content.

NorCal Organics pea protein powder contains one simple ingredientorganic yellow pea protein isolate. Some competitors pea protein powders have a strong, earthy taste that can be off putting, but we found that this one had a more mild flavor. So, if youre looking for a vegan protein boost in your favorite baked goods or oatmeal, this could be a great option.

We love that this protein powder is low in sodium, with only 4% Daily Value per serving, and each serving has 22 grams of protein. However, if you're an athlete looking to replenish sodium and get adequate protein after a sweaty workout, you may want to consider adding electrolytes to your post-workout shake as well.

This powder can be a good option if you have a common food allergy, as it is free of dairy, gluten, and soy.The peas are sustainably sourced from Canadian organic farms, and the company reports third-party testing of their supplements.

The package indicates this powder has been third-party tested, but we dont see specifics on their testing processes, just that an independent lab is used.

Nutivas Organic Cold-pressed Raw Hemp Seed Protein Powder is third-party tested and has a pleasant taste when mixed into a smoothie. It is lower in protein than some alternatives, with 15 grams per serving, but it has the bonus of being a good source of fiberincluding six grams per serving. Fiber is important for digestive health, cholesterol management, and blood sugar stability, but it also keeps you feeling fuller for longer.

We like that the only ingredient is hemp seed protein, as hemp seeds provide a good source of fats, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Omega-3s are a standout heart-healthy fat in these seeds, helping reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease. There are higher amounts of omega-3s in fatty fish, but if you aren't a fan, hemp seeds are another great source. When it comes to minerals, this supplement is a good source of iron (35% DV), zinc (35% DV), and magnesium (60% DV). These nutrients can be hard to get enough of from food alone, so a benefit of using this choice is getting a mineral boost. Zinc plays a role in the immune and digestive systems, while magnesium can help with blood sugar levels and the functioning of muscles and nerves.

Through our testing, we found that this powder definitely tastes better in a smoothie, which is how Nutiva recommends using it. We felt that its earthy flavor and grittier texture were more noticeable when just mixed with water.

If you want a deliciously sweet chocolate protein powder that is high in protein, we recommend Vegas Premium Sport Protein Powder. It has the highest protein content30 grams per servingof all the protein powders we tried. This high protein can help active peoplespecifically strength-based athletesrepair and strengthen muscles after a tough workout. This protein powder is also NSF certified for sport, meaning it has been third-party tested to ensure its label is accurate and that it doesnt contain unsafe levels of contaminants or banned substances for athletes.

We found this protein had a thick, rich, creamy texture that we loved when blended as a smoothie, and it has a sweet, tootsie roll smell. It uses protein sources, including peas, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, and alfalfa, which leads to a well-rounded and complete amino acid profile. It also provides 20% DV calcium and 40% DV iron per serving. Calcium can be especially important for athletes to maintain strong bones and support muscle contractions during exercise. Iron is needed to deliver oxygen to muscles during exercise, and it can be harder to get enough iron when following a vegan diet.

This athlete-targeted protein powder also has tart cherry powder, beet root powder, and turmeric extract added to provide anti-inflammatory benefits, and some research suggests these ingredients may help promote muscle recovery. Athletes will appreciate each serving is higher in sodium16% DVwhich can help restore electrolytes after sweating in longer or intense workouts.

This protein powder contains probiotics and digestive enzymes, which may not be helpful for everyone, especially if you have underlying digestive issues. It is sweetened with stevia, but we found that no aftertaste lingers very long compared to some other protein powders.

Manitoba Harvests Hemp Yeah! Max Protein powder is a great option for those who want a boost of both protein and fiber. It has an impressive 13 grams of fiber per serving, making it easy to have a high-fiber breakfast or snack when added to smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, or baked goods. Fiber is a carbohydrate that we cannot digest and gets fermented in our large intestine by gut bacteria. This process produces beneficial compounds like short-chain fatty acids that help reduce inflammation and give gut bacteria the energy they need to survive.

On top of the high fiber amount, this pick is also a great way to get more minerals in your diet. Each serving provides 30% of your daily needs (DV) of iron, 40% DV magnesium, 25% DV zinc, and 80% copper. It also provides lesser amounts of potassium and calcium.

While we love that this powder is high in fiber and minerals, it is on the lower side for protein13 grams per serving. However, if you were to blend it in a smoothie with non-dairy yogurt or nut butter, that could help boost the overall protein amount. Manitoba Harvest also has hemp protein powders that are higher in protein and lower in fiber if you want a more balanced blend between the two nutrients.

In our testing, we did find that this protein powder had a gritty texture that was not very visually appealing. It was mostly masked when blended into a smoothie, but it was still more noticeable than some other picks.

When we spoke with Manitoba Harvest, they reported their products are internally and third-party tested for levels of heavy metals.

Navitas Organics Hemp protein Powder has only one ingredient: hemp protein powder. Its also rich in fiber and iron. It has no sweetenersincluding steviamaking it versatile and easy to add to baked goods, oatmeal, smoothies, and more. Its a great option if you want a boost in fiber and protein.

Similar to other simple hemp powders, it is lower in protein than other options, with 13 grams per serving, but it's also a great source of fiber, with five grams per serving. Each serving also provides 15% of your daily needs (DV) of iron, 20% DV vitamin A, and 8% DV calcium.

Navitas Organics website says this product is third-party tested, but we dont have more detailed information on that testing.

We loved that this hemp powders earthy flavor was neutralized in a smoothie, and it had a more pleasant texture than other hemp powders we tested. However, it did have a somewhat earthy aftertaste.

Sometimes you may want more than a protein boost; you may also be looking for a boost in nutrients from green vegetables. Vegas Protein and Greens Plant-Based Protein Powder does just that. It includes a blend of vegetables and other plant foods to provide a good source of micronutrients like vitamin K, calcium, and iron. It also provides a small amount (less than 5% of your daily needs) of vitamins A, C, and potassium.

The protein in this powder is from peas, providing all essential amino acids and making this a complete protein, and each serving has 20 grams of protein. The greens in this powder come from powdered spinach, kale, alfalfa grass, and broccoli. An added bonus is it has two grams of fiber per serving7% of your daily needs.

Its important to note these powdered greens may interfere with some medications, so you should talk to a healthcare professional before taking this choice if youre on any medication. In particular, Vitamin K can interact with medications like blood thinners, those for lower cholesterol, or controlling seizures.

It does not appear this product is third-party tested, but other products by Vega have been approved by third-party testers. Since it is sweetened with stevia, we found it had a pretty sweet, somewhat artificial aftertaste. But we still liked it when blended as a smoothie.

While these protein powders didn't reach our top ratings, they may still be of interest to you.

Vegan protein powders are generally safe for most people, but the following people may want to warrant caution before using a protein powder and consult a healthcare professional.

Vegan protein powders can be a beneficial addition for those with higher-than-average protein needs or who dont consume enough food sources of protein. They could be especially beneficial for:

Our team works hard to be transparent about why we recommend certain supplements; you can read more about our dietary supplement methodology here.

We support supplements that are evidence-based and rooted in science. We value certain product attributes that we find to be associated with the highest quality products. We prioritize products that are third-party tested and certified by one of three independent, third-party certifiers: USP, NSF, or ConsumerLab.com.

It's important to note that the FDA does not review dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they go to market. Our team of experts has created a detailed, science-backed methodology to choose the supplements we recommend and gives more details on what we specifically look for in supplements.

To get our top-rated picks, we have personally taste-tested more than 60 protein powders, and we continue to test different powders every quarter. We research the top brands on the market and any new products, looking for different main protein sources and options across a variety of price points. Our staff dietitians carefully look through the ingredients and if a powder is third-party tested. We tasted each protein powder blended with just water and as a smoothie with plant-based milk, banana, and nut butter.

We evaluated these powders based on how they performed on the following attributes.

We use expert advice at every stage of writing, reporting, and testing the products in this story. Here are the people we consulted for this piece.

It is essential to carefully read the ingredient list and nutrition facts panel of a supplement to know which ingredients and how much of each ingredient is included, relative to the recommended daily value of that ingredient. Please bring the supplement label to a healthcare provider to review the different ingredients contained in the supplement and any potential interactions between these ingredients and other supplements and medications you are taking.

The biggest difference in form between vegan protein powders is the protein source. Common sources are soy, peas, seeds, brown rice, hemp, or a combination of these sources. Soy, pea, and hemp proteins are considered complete proteins because they contain all nine essential amino acids.

Vegan protein powders can also come in raw form, meaning the protein source is as close to its natural state as possible. Beans, nuts, and seeds can also be sprouted which could help ease the way be digest nutrients from these foods.

Flavored protein powders can contain artificial sweeteners that, in large amounts, may cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Vegan protein powders may also contain adaptogens, digestive enzymes, probiotics, and other herbal-based ingredients that are not as well-researched and may not be safe for some people, especially in large amounts.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that sedentary adults consume at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day. For a 150-pound individual, this means 55 grams of protein, and for a 200-pound individual, this means 73 grams of protein. However, your protein needs can vary greatly based on your physical activity level, whether you are pregnant or lactating, or if you have other medical conditions that affect protein needs.

The protein needs of a competitive athlete can be 1.4 to 2 grams per kilogram of body weightover double that of a sedentary person. For this reason, athletes may benefit more from protein powders to help make sure they are getting the recommended amount of protein.

While it can be safe to take vegan protein powders daily, we recommend also consuming a variety of food sources of protein. Food sources of plant-based protein will contain other important nutrients like vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and fiber that protein powders don't have.

While there is no tolerable upper limit (UL) for protein, research has shown that consuming over 2 grams per kilogram long-term could increase the risk for kidney, heart, or digestive problems. Some people who have been told to follow a lower protein diet, like those with kidney disease, can have a lower upper limit for daily protein. Ultimately, a healthcare professional can help you determine what specific protein amount is best for your health.

Vegan and non-vegan protein powders will also naturally contain some heavy metals since heavy metals are naturally found in soil. So, if you consume many servings of protein powder per day, you could risk getting higher amounts of heavy metals, especially if the powder is not third-party tested for heavy metal amounts. Keep this in mind, especially if you are pregnant and considering adding a protein powder to your eating routine. ConsumerLab.com has more information on heavy metals found in protein powders that they tested.

Another consideration for how much vegan protein powder is too much is the amount of fiber or other added ingredients in vegan protein powders. Getting a lot of fiber, thickeners, or sweeteners in protein powders could cause some side effects for some people when eaten in high amounts.

Risks of consuming too much vegan protein powder could include:

Research on some sources of vegan protein is sparse since they are relatively new compared to whey protein. Soy, peas, and hemp are complete proteins like whey, while protein sources like brown rice are not complete proteins like whey protein.

Blair Persyn, MS, RDN, LDN, CNSC, registered dietitian and owner of Bites With Blair, LLC says, Pea protein powders can be just as helpful as whey protein in maintaining and building muscle. She also says, People with lactose-intolerance can have issues tolerating whey and may benefit from switching to a vegan protein powder. Wirtz highlights soy protein, saying, Consuming soy and whey protein has no significant differences in muscle growth and strength development. Furthermore, soy is a complete protein and contains all essential amino acids.

Persyn says, My favorite vegan protein powders are pea-based protein powders because they often have a more optimal nutrition breakdown. Look for vegan protein powders that have 120-130 calories and 20-30g protein per scoop. This will ensure that your protein powder is mainly just protein and doesnt include excess fat or carbohydrates.

Overall, the best source of vegan protein for you will depend on your unique nutritional needs, taste preferences, and budget.

Isabel Vasquez RD, LDN is a Latina registered dietitian who counsels clients through the private practice Nutritiously Yours LLC. Her work is especially focused on helping individuals divest from a one-size-fits-all approach to health and connect with their unique needs.

Shushy Rita Setrakian, MS, RDN, CDN, is a registered dietitian and one of our nutrition and supplement commerce editors. She sifts through all the data from testing protein powders to make sure we are recommending the top picks, and she has tried many of these powders herself.

13-year-old boy arrested during protest over vegan milk in a Winter Garden Starbucks – Orlando Weekly

Posted: at 2:36 am

A 13-year-old boy protesting Starbucks extra charge for vegan milk was arrested last week after he allegedly battered a deputy in a Winter Garden Starbucks.

Deputies told Fox 35 the boy was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and trespassing after a warning. The boys mother, Shannon Blair, and her boyfriend, Wesley Hucker, also allegedly trespassed after a warning and Hucker was also arrested.

About 15 people protested in the store, located at16065 New Independence Parkway, seen in a video shared with Orlando Weekly by PETA. Protesters are seen holding various signs, such as one that read "Starbucks: Stop Vegan Upcharge." Starbucks called the sheriff's office to have the protesters removed after they refused to leave the store.

The videoshows the boy being restrained by a deputy and allegedly shoving into him, which led to a drink being spilled on both of them. The officer is then seen pushing the boy onto a table and putting him into handcuffs. Throughout the video, the boys mother is heard repeating, Dont touch my child Oh my god, oh my god, and What are you doing to my child?"

In a press release, PETA wrote that the sit-in was held by supporters of the animal rights organization.

Despite publicly admitting that dairy is the biggest contributor to its carbon footprint and acknowledging the positive impact that dairy-free milk options have in furthering its environmental goals, Starbucks continues to charge as much as 90 cents more for them, lagging far behind its many competitors that offer vegan milk at no additional charge, PETA wrote.

The boy is still in police custody and Hucker is being held at an adult facility. Blair is trying to secure her sons release, according to PETA.

Retrain our farmers to support veganism – The Wahkiakum County Eagle

Posted: at 2:36 am

To The Eagle:

I am new to Wahkiakum County and, like many here, appreciate the natural beauty of the area. In September, when I first arrived last year, the trees, birds in flight and peaceful cows all contributed to a scene which, at first, seemed retirement-worthy. Within a few weeks, though, the sounds of gunfire shattered the peace. I was told that October was hunting season and that it would calm down soon. And yet, even during the holiday season, that gunfire continued. I would support making Puget Island a safe zone for non-hunters throughout the year.

Then, last week I came to town for an interview. A group of men, all smiles and waving, were standing in a tent in front of the market and people were happily walking out of the store with huge, plastic-wrapped packages of what were, perhaps, the remains of the peaceful cows that graced my neighborhood until, they mysteriously disappeared. My dog, who was very happy when we first arrived, has become serious lately. Perhaps concerned for the welfare of her new friends.

For a short period of time, as a child, my sister and I lived on a farm with animals. In response to that experience, we both converted to veganism as adults who make our own decisions about what we put on our tables and into our bodies. I know there are other vegan people in our community because I see some certified vegan products in our market. Veganism is a healthy alternative, when done properly, which can bring greater health and immunity to people and many studies have shown this to be true.

We no longer need animal products to live and thrive. Furthermore, animal farming has a larger carbon footprint than botanical farming, and governments are concerned about greenhouse gases. What would it take to retrain our farmers, and our creamery, to convert to vegan farming and products? Are there government retraining programs and grants that could be put into practice? Im told that potatoes are one of the newer vegan dairy alternatives and, as deadly nightshades, are deer resistant.

Honestly,

E. S. Simpson

Vegan Deli & Butcher Is Even Better Than the Meat Thing – Riverfront Times

Posted: at 2:36 am

MABEL SUEN

Vegan Deli & Butcher's Italian cold cut sandwich features chef Chris Bertke's riff on ham, turkey, pepperoni and provolone on a hoagie.

Chris Bertke has a tendency to look frazzled, but if you watch him at work in his new open kitchen on the high-trafficked crook of Morgan Ford and Gravois, there's a grace and calm about him. He's delicate with his herbs, he slices his subs and breads gently. He moves about behind the counter like Mister Rogers at his puppets. If it weren't for the punk rock on the stereo, you might think to roll out a sleeping bag and a doobie.

There's a black transfer on the wall as you walk in: a silhouette of a pig wielding a cleaver, two humans cowering in fear. You get the point and you are glad to be here. For all the menace of the illustration, Vegan Deli & Butcher (5003 Gravois Avenue) feels like a safe place to be. Everything is OK on this corner; no harm's being done.

I'm good with that. And because I do believe in a future where my brain isn't woefully compartmentalized when it comes to eating animals, and my stomach doesn't believe their products are essential for life, I'm bringing out the band for Bertke. In his actual world, vegan food is the first choice because, the way he makes it, it can be insanely good. With him in the kitchen, that world feels possible; the future feels like it's here.

But this is the thing I always wonder: Is the principal goal to outfox the rapacious carnivore or simply coax them to the gentler side with toothsome, meat-mimicking soy and wheat products? (He happens to do both). And then, on the other hand, what do vegans think when they bite down on a "short rib" bnh m and its meatily threaded, perfectly stringed and has exactly the right chew? Is this like despising cake but loving cakey? Hating green, but wearing the vest because it looks so good with those mustard pants? Oh, whatevs. Compartments again.

And it doesn't matter right now. We are here, surely, to talk about taste, about satisfaction, regardless of how it's produced. And Bertke is a wizard.

MABEL SUEN

Chef Chris Bertke.

He was a wizard before, when he headed the kitchen at Utah Station and people couldn't get enough of his Crack Tacos, and he may in his very own brick-and-mortar, which opened in November be more of one now. For instance, with a wand and a waft of sea kelp, his cured carrots become lox. By working his magic on soy protein, his beef has just the right bounce. For example, if not for the wimpy jalapeos, that aforementioned bnh m a special the day we went was impressive. Bound tight in parchment with daikon, carrot and a delicious woodsy smear of mushroom pate, it was pretty darn close to Mai Lee's. (Those weedy jalapeos could be hotter.)

Even he seemed surprised by the result.

"Yeah, wasn't that nuts?" he says, and goes on to talk about the process: "I began with a soy and wheat base. I made a blob, added oil for richness, braised it, let it sit, gave it an oil and spice bath ..."

That's when I ask if he has a background in chemistry.

"No," he says. "I like to drink and, late night, the fucked-up ideas come."

While Utah Station had a fast-food bent, Bertke's latest venture riffs on an East Coast deli. So, yes, there are bagels and lox (the bagels come weekly from New York); yes, there are cold cuts tucked into buns with cheeses and pickly peppers; and yes you heard it right there's a Maine "lobster" roll. It's kind of a beauty. Actually it's two rolls two buns a-bulge with a juicy amalgam of jackfruit, hearts of palm (clever), celery, onion and a faintly sweet Thousand Island mayo.

Bertke keeps some of his tricks up his sleeve. He will only say that his cream cheese materializes from a secret whip of tofu and coconut oil, and that most of his meats have something to do with seitan treated in unusual ways.

"I have no recipe books," he said. "And I don't read."

MABEL SUEN

The shop is clean and bright.

It's a small shop, but clean and bright. Two high-tops, a few benches, an exposed brick wall. Fans of Bertke's to-go-only frozen pizza will be pleased to see the packed stand-up freezer. It's a pizza version of a DMV number dispenser; almost everyone seems to take one (although, in this case, no one looks grim).

It's easier to do pizza tricks in St. Louis, where Provel isn't an oddity but the thing. Don't know how many decades it's been since my lone taste of that processed cheese product, but from memory, at least, I couldn't tell the difference from the vegan version. Had Bertke's way, I liked it. I wasn't as worried about the cheesy, liquidy slick. Nor was I worried about the circular 'kerchiefs of salami, the knots of herby sausage. And afterward, once I'd scarfed seven-eighths of a Spicy Italian and still felt spry, I asked myself: Is the "real thing" really worth it?

The clientele at Vegan Deli & Butcher is interesting. For every ear gauge, there's a silvery head. But the day I went, Gen Xers (if that's what I "untechnically" am) were in short supply. By appearances, on that day at least, my generation which should know better doesn't. Except for Bertke, who hasn't eaten meat in 30 years.

MABEL SUEN

The Reuben is topped with faux corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing on rye bread.

Later that day, after my initial visit to Bertke's green kingdom, I told my son, who has been mainlining meat since he was two, that there was half a Reuben in the fridge. As he opened the door and reached in, my poker face was mint expressionless, a little bit bored.

It's a fat hunk of a sandwich, but tender: lovely, fresh marble rye (picked up each morning from Marconi Bakery on the Hill) clasping a juicy, saucy bundle of junipery corned beef, vinegary kraut and a rosy Thousand Island dressing.

"Dang, Mum," he said, biting in. "This kicks."

I didn't say a word.

If It Isn’t Your Favorite Vegan Beer Already, Jason Momoa’s New Guinness Commercial Should Do the Trick – VegNews

Posted: at 2:36 am

It is no secret that Jason Momoa has been a fan of Guinness for some time and now, he has found a creative way to show the world just how much he loves this vegan beer. The Dublin-based beer company just released a new commercial, produced by Momoas company On the Roam.

Flickr/Gage Skidmore

The ad, which Momoa also directed, kicks off with Aquaman (the superhero he plays in the 2018 action film) finding out that he is two-percent Irish and dashing offthrough a crowded restaurant, street, and trafficto celebrate the discovery with a fresh pint.

The ad is a celebration of Momoas heritage (which on his mothers side is native Hawaiian and Samoan and on his fathers side is Irish, German, and Native American). In fact, the commercial was a family affair.

My whole company is in it, we produced it, I co-directed it with my best friend, and then I wrote it with another best friend. My moms in it, Momoa told The Hollywood Reporter. It abso-f*cking-lutely is my dream job.

The partnership between Momoa and Guinness, his favorite post-workout drink, has been brewing for a decade. The 44-year-old Game of Thrones star visited the Dublin brewery multiple times and was even presented with his own imprint of the beer, the Mano Brew.

There are many reasons to love Momoas favorite beer, a major one of which is that it is no longer made with animal products.

In 2017, Guinness announced a pivotal shift in its production process, marking a significant milestone for vegan beer enthusiasts. The brand decided to eliminate isinglass, a fish bladder derivative traditionally used for yeast filtration, from its brewing process. This move was in response to growing consumer demand for more ethical and inclusive beverage options.

Guinness

The brewery is delighted to confirm that this phase of the project is complete and all Guinness Draught produced in keg format at St. James Gate Brewery and served in pubs, bars, and restaurants around the world, is brewed without using isinglass to filter the beer, a spokeswoman for Guinness said in a statement at the time.

Led by Guinnesss parent company Diageo, this transition set a new industry standard for large commercial brewers looking to enhance their sustainability and animal welfare practices.

This change has not affected the quality of Guinness, a beer that is about celebration and communityas captured by Momoa in the new commercial.

For Momoa, drinking Guinnesswhich is lighter bodied and lower in calories and alcohol content than other beersis less about getting tipsy and more about forming connections at local pubs.

To me, Guinness is like wine or sake, Momoa said. It has its own place. Its not beer, its Guinness.

Beyond his affinity for Guinness, Momoa is an avid environmentalist. In a notable 2019 speech at the United Nations, he represented the plight of island nations against the environmental degradation caused by industrialized countries, declaring, We are a disease that is infecting our planet We must initiate change now.

Mananalu Water

His commitment to sustainability is also evident in his establishment of Manalau, a water brand favoring aluminum cans over plastic bottles, further highlighted by a viral moment in 2019 when he shaved his beard to protest against plastic pollution.

In 2021, he also teamed up with the climbing gear company So iLL to introduce a line of vegan sneakers. The collaboration, named the iLL x On The Roam Collection, featured sneakers crafted from eco-conscious materials including organic cotton, a cork layer, and soles that naturally break down over time. These shoes incorporate insoles made by Bloom Foam, which repurposes harmful algae into eco-friendly material.

Momoa is also the co-founder of Bozeman, MT-based spirits company Meili Vodka, which holds itself to a higher standard of sustainability. The company uniquely integrates the natural elements of fire, water, earth, and air into its distillation process, emphasizing eco-friendly practices. Its bottles are made from post-consumer recycled glass, directly addressing the issue of waste.

Utilizing an ancient aquifer for its water source, Meili ensures the purity and taste of its vodka while maintaining environmental integrity. The grain used is sourced from local farms, minimizing the carbon footprint and supporting local agriculture. Finally, Meilis commitment to sustainability extends to its production methods, focusing on reducing energy consumption and promoting regenerative practices.

Warner Bros

This Earth Day (April 22), Momoa will continue his fight for the planet on the big screen with the release of new documentary Common Ground. The film, directed by Josh and Rebecca Tickell, features a compelling lineup of environmental advocates, including Momoa, Laura Dern, Ian Somerhalder, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson, and Donald Glover.

This sequel to Kiss the Ground further explores the urgent need for a shift away from industrialized farming methods to combat climate change, restore biodiversity, and revitalize ecosystems.

Currently, Momoa is in New Zealand filming the forthcoming comedic film Minecraftalongside Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, and Danielle Brookswhich is slated for release in April 2025.

Anna Starostinetskaya is the Senior News Editor at VegNews and is always keeping an eye on all things vegan in her home city of San Francisco, CA and everywhere else.
