An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution, aired on March 18 at 8 p.m. on ABC, and will stream the next day on Hulu. It explores the trend of using weight loss medications and the controversy surrounding them.

Oprah's shared her personal weight loss journey and her experience taking a weight loss medication. Her goal for the special is to release the judgement, shame, and stigma around weight.

During the special, Oprah reflected on the body shaming she experienced throughout her career. I took on the shame that the world gave to me," she recalled.

"The number one thing I hope people come away with is knowing that [obesity] is a disease, and it's in the brain," Oprah says in a new clip about the special on Good Morning America.

Ahead of the special's airing, Oprah announced that she was stepping away from the board of WeightWatchers. She was concerned that there would be a conflict of interest.

I decided that because this special was really important to me and I wanted to be able to talk about whatever I wanted to talk about," she explained.

It is a very personal topic for me and for the hundreds of millions of people impacted around the globe who have for years struggled with weight and obesity, she told Oprah Daily earlier this month. This special will bring together medical experts, leaders in the space and people in the day-to-day struggle to talk about health equity and obesity, with the intention to ultimately release the shame, judgment and stigma surrounding weight.

The latest news comes amidst Oprahs own weight loss journey, including her recent admission that regular exercise, nutrition, and weight-loss medications are helping her live a healthier life. Here's everything to know about her health.

Oprah's 2021 knee surgery actually jumpstarted her recent weight loss.

"After [my] knee surgery, I started hiking and setting new distance goals each week. I could eventually hike three to five miles every day and a 10-mile straight-up hike on weekends," Oprah told PEOPLE. "I felt stronger, more fit and more alive than Id felt in years."

Working towards these fitness goals also helped Oprah achieve a personal goal. "In Hawaii, I live on a mountain, and theres this big hillI used to look out the window every morning and say, 'God, one day I want to walk up that mountain,'" she said in her PEOPLE cover story. "Last year over Christmas I did it... It felt like redemption."

In December, Oprah shared with PEOPLE that she was close to her goal weight of 160 pounds, but emphasized that her journey was not about a number but rather about living a more vibrant life.

In September 2023, the multihyphenate hosted Oprah Dailys "The State of Weight" panel. At that time, she shared that she wasn't interested in taking weight loss medication. "Shouldn't we all just be more accepting of whatever body you choose to be in? That should be your choice," she said. "Even when I first started hearing about the weight loss drugs, at the same time I was going through knee surgery, and I felt, 'I've got to do this on my own.' Because if I take the drug, that's the easy way out.'"

But in December 2023, Oprah Winfrey opened up to PEOPLE about how her perspective on weight loss medication has changed over time.

"I now use [weight loss medication] as I feel I need it, as a tool to manage not yo-yoing," Oprah told the publication, without naming the specific drug she takes. "The fact that there's a medically-approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier, in my lifetime, feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift, and not something to hide behind and once again be ridiculed for. Im absolutely done with the shaming from other people and particularly myself."

Oprah shared that she started the medication before Thanksgiving "because I knew I was going to have two solid weeks of eating." Instead of gaining eight pounds like she did last year, she gained half a pound, per the publication.

But she emphasized that weight loss medication has not been a "magic bullet" in managing her weight. "Its everything," she said, referencing her health and fitness routine. "I know everybody thought I was on it, but I worked so damn hard. I know that if Im not also working out and vigilant about all the other things, it doesnt work for me."

During the primetime special, experts claimed that new medications like Ozempic or Wegovy can silence "food noise" and help people lose weight. Food noise refers to "constant and persistent thoughts" about food, "to the point of feeling as if [subjects'] lives revolved around food," according to research published in the academic journal Nutrients.

Oprah shared an anecdote about how taking a weight-loss drug helped quiet her food noise.

"Im not constantly thinking about what the next meal is going to be," she said. "I can eat a half a bagel and be fine...I just want less of the bagel."

The media mogul hasn't shared exactly which weight loss medication she's onyet.

Oprah also made it clear that everyones weight loss journey is different. "Whatever your choice is for your body and your weight health, it should be yours to own and not to be shamed about it," she said." "I'm just sick of it, and I hope this conversation begins the un-shaming of it."

As she's gotten older, Oprah added that she's learned to let go of the shame she's felt about her body over the years. It was public sport to make fun of me for 25 years, she said. I have been blamed and shamed, and I blamed and shamed myself.

Now, she has a new perspective on her weight loss journey. "I realized Id been blaming myself all these years for being overweight, and I have a predisposition that no amount of willpower is going to control," she told the publication. "I had an awareness of [weight loss] medications, but felt I had to prove I had the willpower to do it. I now no longer feel that way."

Weight loss medication isn't the only tool in Oprah's kit: She's also an avid exerciser. During her weight loss special, she told viewers that she hikes three to five miles per day and also does "weight resistance training.

Back in 2017, she told The Hollywood Reporter that she hits her home gym soon after waking up. I have a fantastic Octane elliptical machine that is like a power moveryou can increase the length of your stride and your arm movement, she said. Ill do 20 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes walking on the treadmill. I start out at the Level 3 incline setting and then every minute I add to the incline until I get to 12 or 15. And then I do sit-ups.

After getting her heart rate up, Oprah said shell often cool down with 10 to 20 minutes of walking or sitting meditation.

Back in 1994, Oprah ran the Marine Corps marathon to celebrate her 40th birthday. (She even wore the bib number 40.) Oprah finished with a time of 4:29:15, which put her 8,210 out of 12,716 finishers. (She later told a fan that she couldnt run any more marathons due to a knee injury.)

Despite her dedication to fitness, Oprah still doesn't love to work out.

Heres the thing about exercise: I still hate it so much, she said on Today in 2020, per PEOPLE. But, she added, I still do it.

I think everyones waiting to love it, she continued. Youre not going to love it, but you do the thing you need to do to make yourself feel whole and well.

Fans were floored in late February when Oprah Winfrey announced that she was moving on from the board of WeightWatchers. The talk show host didn't give a lot of explanation at the time. However, it came just a few months after the she shared that she used weight loss medications as part of maintaining her health. Now, the 70-year-old opening up about why she left her nearly decade-long partnership with the company.

Obesity has been making headlines recently, with Oprahs TV special on weight loss and news of widespread shortages of weight-loss medications like Wegovy. A billion people are estimated to have obesity worldwide, and in the United States, Black, Native, and Hispanic Americans are more likely to have obesity than white Americans. This weeks guests on Basic Black discussed racial disparities around obesity and its various treatments, including diet and exercise, anti-obesity medications, and bariatric surgery.

Dr. Abdelrahman Nimeri, Director of Bariatric Surgery at Brigham & Womens Hospital, says people should approach obesity like they would any other disease. Most patients with the disease of obesity, they know the disease, and they try to figure it out on their own. They try diet, it doesnt work, they try exercise. And then rather than saying this is not working, let me see someone, they blame themselves, he said, pointing to the stigma around obesity. Someone with the disease needs an evaluation, he said, so that doctors can determine the appropriate treatment.

Obesity and mental health are connected, according to Dr. Stephen Tourjee, a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and founder of Transcend TMS Boston. If somebodys depressed, theyre gonna have changes in their mood, their sleep, their appetite they might have some weight gain and feel less motivated, he said. [If] youve been struggling with obesity all your life, youre going to potentially internalize that struggle and that shame and the stigma that society places on us, and thats a heavy burden to carry too, and you can become depressed over time, he said.

Long-term stressors like poverty and racism can also contribute to obesity. Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity medicine physician scientist and associate professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, said thats part of why Black Americans are more likely to have obesity than white Americans. Stress leads to storage of fat, she said. When we experience this chronic stress, our body doesnt recognize that a famine isnt happening. Its storing adipose and fat to prepare for a famine, but that famine may not come, she said.

Christine Sinclair, RD, is a licensed dietitian nutritionist with Stop & Shop Nutrition Partners. She provides workshops and free consultations at the Grove Hall Stop & Shop store in Dorchester. Theres no insurance involved, theres no cost involved, and we consider ourselves the bridge between the clinical providers, she said. Even reading a nutrition label, for some, is really confusing, she said, so she works to help customers read labels and understand which foods suit their needs.

Genetics also play a role. Patients should not feel that this disease came from them, because obesity is 60 to 70% genetic, said Dr. Nimeri. The effects of epigenetics, what we eat, how we exercise, the types of foods we eat, adds to that, he said.

When diet and exercise arent enough, new drug can treat fatty liver disease, says FDA – cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval of a drug that experts say marks a landmark shift in treatment for the most common form of liver disease.

Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, a small pharmaceutical company in Pennsylvania was granted approval for its one and only drug: Rezdiffra (resmetirom), the first and only approved drug for the treatment for a serious form of fatty liver disease in adults.

University Hospitals liver specialist Dr. Pierre Gholam said the drug is designed to help prevent progression to cirrhosis in persons with fatty liver who have already shown some liver dysfunction -- somewhere between 8 and 10 million patients. These patients often have difficulty losing weight, which up until Thursday was the only intervention proven to be effective.

This is a big deal because fatty liver is by far the leading condition we see in the treatment of liver disease, said Gholam, of the approval announced last week.

Out of 56 patients he saw in his liver clinic last week, 34 of them had fatty liver, he recounted. Where else do you see a situation where two-thirds of your patients have the exact same problem?

Fatty liver is seen most often in people who are overweight or obese and is becoming more common around the world, especially in Middle Eastern and Western nations as the number of people with obesity rises.

Initially there may be no symptoms, but some people with fatty liver can develop a more severe form of the disease called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. When this happens, the fat in the liver becomes toxic, and liver cells become inflamed and die. NASH can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, the need for a transplant, and even death.

The new drug works by stimulating the thyroid to burn excess energy that the liver would otherwise store in the form of fat. In patients with NASH, it has been shown to prevent and even reverse liver damage.

However, it is not currently approved in patients whose liver damage has progressed to cirrhosis, and the dosage of certain other medications, like statins used for lowering cholesterol, may need to be adjusted. Madrigal says, they are currently investigating whether the drug can help patients with cirrhosis.

It doesnt work for every patient. It works for a subset of patients, explained Gholam. But when it does it reduces inflammation and scarring in the liver which is ultimately what leads to patients developing cirrhosis and getting sick from fatty liver disease.

The drug manufacturers say that it should not be considered a substitute for modifications in diet and exercise, but instead used as a complementary treatment to help nudge patients in the right direction. And for many patients this is a big relief.

On the morning following the FDAs announcement, Gholam says seven patients called his office asking if they could get on the drug, which demonstrates just how many people are desperate for a solution.

Its the first step after 15-20 years of trying and failing said Gholam. Its a small first step. We have not cured fatty liver disease and we certainly have not cured metabolic syndrome or obesity, but it is the first time that someone is going to come to my clinic with fatty liver with scarring and Ill be able to offer them something other than diet and exercise.

Unfortunately, 90%-95% of people who lose weight regain it within three to five years he says.

So it is not a realistic expectation for most people, Gholam said.

Gholam says this marks the beginning of what may be a turning point in the treatment of fatty liver disease, and hes hopeful that a decade from now, patients will have multiple options.

GLP-1 agonists, like the drugs liraglutide and semaglutide currently prescribed to treat obesity and diabetes are also being investigated for their ability to treat the liver along with several other classes of medications Gholam said. The studies should have results in the next 10-18 months.

Meanwhile, data on Rezdiffra will continue to be collected for the FDA over the course of a total of 54 month because it was approved under the accelerated approval pathway, which allows for earlier approval of drugs that treat serious conditions and address an unmet medical need.

Ashley Greene In Workout Gear Didn’t Feel 100 Today But Still Got It In – Celebwell

Twilight star Ashley Greene knows it can be hard to get motivated for a workoutbut she does it anyway. Greene, 37, shared a video of herself wearing black leggings and a white t-shirt, doing a kettlebell workout at the gym. "Didn't feel 100 today but still got it in," reads the text over her Instagram story. Greene has detailed her fitness journey since welcoming daughter Kingsley in September 2022here's how the actress prioritizes her health and wellness.

Greene changes up her workouts to avoid boredom and fitness plateaus. "I started doing CorePower Yoga a lot because I feel like I'm getting all these little aches and pains if I'm not paying attention to stretching," she told Parade. "I like high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and for that I do STRONG by Zumba, which is right up my alley. I don't generally go into the classes, but I download them. There's a 60-minute one, there's a 20-minute one and there are some shorter ones too. And it's impossible for me to get a butt, but they have one geared towards that so I've started doing that one."

Greene loves clean beauty products. "Basically, I try to find things that are going to be clean and aren't going to include anything that doesn't need to be in there, and I love Beauty Counter for that reason," she told New York Magazine. "Each one of these oils serves a different purpose."

Greene is embracing her postpartum figure. "I am dedicated to putting in the work to rebuild a strong base," she wrote in an Instagram post. "I am also dedicated to giving myself grace and remaining eternally grateful for the beautiful life my body graciously helped me create and nurture. Greene partnered with mental wellbeing platform Aura Health as mental health is a cause close to her heart. "I have always tried to be honest and vulnerable to help others not feel so alone, and this partnership with Aura Health is an example of that in its purest form," she said in a press release. "Opening up about my mental health journey was daunting but I am so proud to share my story on Aura and encourage others to care for their mental health with the help of the many features Aura Health has to offer."

HIIT is Greene's favorite workout. "What I love about HIIT is the fact that you can use your own body weight, which really works for me versus trying to lift a thousand pounds," she told Parade. "Whenever I work out with my body weight, I find that I can track how strong I'm becoming and I'm able to do things later in the week that I maybe wasn't able to in the beginning of the week. So for me, that's just a really fun thing to be able to track."

Gabrielle Epstein is showing off her gym-honed body. In a new social media post the model wears a crop top and leggings, flaunting her washboard abs. She captioned the series of Instagram snaps, "stuff." How does the model approach diet and exercise? Here is everything you need to know about her lifestyle habits.

Gabby eats healthy most of the time. "I try and follow the 80/20 rule, which is my approach to maintaining a healthy lifestyle rather than a diet philosophy. It's pretty simple, I try and eat well 80% of the time, and then 20% of the time I let myself enjoy a bit of indulgence. It isn't about counting calories, denying myself certain foods or cutting out entire food groups, and allows me to enjoy life without feeling guilty about breaking my 'diet,'" she told Galore.

Gabby drinks a lot of water. "Staying hydrated is my number 1 tip!" she told Galore. "Water also helps to flush out all the toxins in your system, especially with a bit of freshly squeezed lemon it. Coconut water and green tea are great for detoxing as well." According to the Mayo Clinic, hydration is important for a variety of reasons. Water helps get rid of waste through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements, keeps your temperature normal, lubricates and cushions joints, and helps protect sensitive tissues.

"Preparation is key!" Gabby says about snacking. She packs them so she won't be tempted by high fat foods such as pizza and hot chips when she is out and about. "If I'm spending the whole day at the beach with friends we always make sure we pack an esky full of coconut water, fresh fruit, nuts and organic popcorn," she added to Galore.

Gabrielle supplements to ensure she is getting the nutrients she needs. "I also take a good-quality multivitamin daily. It's a great way to replenish your body of essential vitamins and minerals and to protect your general health," she told Galore.

"I usually mix up my training with running, reformer Pilates, boxing, and yoga," Gabrielle told Galore. "When I'm away I have 20-30 minute circuit programs that I can do in my hotel room or at a park if I don't have time to get to a gym a short workout is always better than no workout at all." df44d9eab23ea271ddde7545ae2c09ec

"I try and set aside at least 45 minutes to an hour a day for some form of physical activity," Gabrielle told Galore. "I also try and work physical activities into the itinerary paddle boarding, surfing, hiking, and swimming are fun activities that will definitely help you keep fit! I also try and eat as healthy as I can on vacation and avoid consuming sugar, processed foods, alcohol and simple carbohydrates. No matter where you are there should be some kind of fresh high-protein, high-fiber food available."

Gabby maintains that "cutting out whole food groups to lose weight" is a no-no in her book. "Healthy eating is all about balance, and your body needs a mix of proteins, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates to function and work to its full potential. I think any diet that cuts out a whole food group is dangerous and can't be sustainable long-term. Eating healthy, nutritious food and exercising regularly is the best diet for a healthy lifestyle," she told Galore.

"I usually hit the gym by 5:30am/6am, and workout for an hour-1.5 hours, then I'll go home and eat breakfast and make a list of everything I need to do that day. Then usually work from home, or from my laptop at a coffee shop, and catch up with my family or my friends," Gabby told Women Fitness. "I have always been a morning person, but I find I'm much more productive when I get up early and get everything I need to do out of the way as soon as possible to avoid procrastination and I'm a huge list person."

Its time to shake off the winter doldrums and embrace the boost of energy every Canadian feels as winter gives way to spring. Its been a long few months, but its time to say goodbye to the Netflix vibe and hello to spring training. Put down the remote and get moving.

To help you embrace this new energy, here are a series of 20(ish)-minute workouts designed to accommodate everyone from coach potatoes to avid exercisers. The workouts feature a series of intervals that range from easy (recovery mode) to high intensity. The idea is to cycle between intensities, so you get the maximum bang for your buck.

Walk, run, bike or swim the workouts, just make sure youre breathing hard during the high-intensity intervals (you should be feeling the effort) and taking it easy during the recovery phase of the workout. The idea is to amp up your speed, knowing that you have a generous recovery period to catch your breath. Peaks and valleys in intensity will put the spring back in your step and get you ready for the active summer months ahead.

If youre worried that 20 minutes isnt enough time to whip yourself into better shape, think again. Small exercise bites are all the rage, with plenty of studies highlighting the benefits of short, peppy workouts. Get your sweat on at lunch, before the kids get up in the morning or shake off the stress of a long day with an after-dinner workout. And since the days are getting longer, theres more time at both ends of the day for a quick 20-minute exercise bite.

The four featured workouts are slightly different; mix them up over the course of the week. If you havent worked up a sweat in a while, take a day off between workouts. If youre active but in need of a spring tuneup, work them into your schedule as you see fit. Theyre perfect for days when time is tight, or motivation is low. You can add a five-minute warmup and five-minute cool down and boost the workout to 30 minutes. Bottom line is: You do you.

Now for the housekeeping. The intervals are timed, so its helpful to use an app (see suggestions below) or smartwatch that tracks your speed, distance and time. Another bonus of a good app is reviewing your stats post-workout to track your progress.

You need to dress ready to sweat. Have a water bottle handy and your phone or watch so you can get the timing down pat.

You should feel a distinct difference between easy, moderate and fast-paced intervals. These arent steady state workouts. Your hard-paced efforts should take you out of your comfort zone and your recovery should bring your heart rate down and slow your breathing. The idea is to recover enough that you can maintain your intensity through all the fast-paced intervals.

Intensity is a relative thing, which means one persons fast-paced effort is another persons recovery. Thats why these workouts can be enjoyed by novice and experienced exercisers alike and why theyre adaptable to the pool, bike, treadmill, rowing machine and elliptical trainer and can be enjoyed be walkers, runners and everyone in between.

Commit the workout to memory before you leave the house, text the workout to your phone so you can access it easily or go old-school and write the intervals on your hand or on a note you can tuck in the waistband of your workout gear. And dont play favourites. Each workout challenges your body in slightly different ways, so rotate through the full series every week.

Finally, dont forget to have fun. Challenge a friend to take on the workouts with you and commit to at least four weeks. If youre enjoying yourself, make these 20-minute exercise bites a staple in your schedule. Workouts dont need to be long, boring or repetitive to be effective. They just need to get done.

People across the world are always curious about the British Royal Family and want to know as much about them as possible. That even includes wondering what they eat and how they exercise.

Princess Catherine (aka Kate Middleton) has previously revealed the secret to fitting exercise into her busy day. But how does a princess eat?

We were curious after she recently opened up about her health, revealing that she was undergoing treatment for cancer. With a bit of digging, we were able to put together an idea of what sort of foods are part of her diet!

Cosmopolitan did a bit of research into Princess Catherines diet and highlighted three different elements.

For starters, the royal reportedly eats a lot of home-cooked meals, and she is said to be a bit of a pro in the kitchen. Shes opened up about baking birthday cakes, and her roast chicken appears to be one of Prince Williams favorite dinners.

Princess Catherine has also been reported to enjoy a smoothie in the morning. One recipe that was referenced in the Daily Mail included spirulina, kale, matcha (a finely ground green tea powder), spinach, romaine, cilantro and blueberries.

The publication noted that the Prince and Princess of Wales are both sushi eaters.

What else do we know about Princess Catherines diet? The List noted that shes enjoys a spicy dish but is not a fan of almond milk. The more you know!

Last year Prince William revealed everything he ate in a day, which gave more insight into a royal diet!

The 44-year-old star - who was one of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends for 15 years at the famed home owned by the late magazine owner - has daughter Rainbow, 11, and seven-year-old son Forest with ex-husband Pasquale Rotella and explained that whilst she is "focused" on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, she won't discuss it in front of her kids.

She told Us Weekly: "Were really focused on healthy eating. Im really careful not to say anything about dieting or weight or anything in front of my kids. If theyre trying to shove something unhealthy in front of me, I just say, Oh, Im doing a health thing.

The former 'Girls Next Door' explained that she doesn't want her daughter to begin suffering from body image issues or seek "validation" through her appearance because she started to experience things like that when she was her age.

She said: "We dont want her to get into the mode where shes really focused on the way she looks, or trying to get attention for the way she looks or validation through that. I think weve been really successful so far. Shes on a better track than I was at that age for sure. I was already trying to look some sort of way when I was 11."

Holly was recently asked if it was true that the bathroom pipes had to be replaced from the amount of girls vomiting during their time in the mansion as they suffered from bulimia and she admitted it was "sad" to see so many women suffering at the time.

She said: "On my podcast, ['Girls Next Level with Bridget Marquardt'], we've talked to staff and other people who were there at the time that this allegedly happened, and I guess it was a thing. There were people who struggled with really bad eating disorders while I was there, and it was always a sad thing to see."
