We take the path of mindfulness with the Taiwanese-born Australian composer of meditation music, Katy Tsai.

Arriving from Taiwan aged 13, Katy Tsai studied piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before becoming a composer and producer of live meditation events. Katy joins us to explain how Vipassana meditation set her on a path writing music for meditation, as she takes us through three recent albums that make up her Sound Oasis collection, Buddha's Playground, Scarlet to Violet and Journey to the Summit.

We'll also hear the new album for Australian musician Leo Dale, From Now Om, an alto sax meditation with six voices chanting together in the harmonic series, and a wisdom teaching on mindfulness and music fromHis Holiness the XIIth Gyalwang Drukpa, a Buddhist lineage holder from Bhutan.

Music for meditation is often dismissed as New Age but most religious traditions do have meditative music as part of their repertoire. And since the 1940s composers like John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Terry Riley, La Monte Young and Pauline Oliveros have all taken meditation and music seriously. Today meditation music is a major genre. And while most of the music is written from outside any particular religious tradition, many of the techniques like repetition, use of mantras, and a limited sound palette have come straight from Buddhist, Hindu and Christian meditation practices.
