Belly fat, spare tire, muffin top stomach fat by any other name is still fat. The conventional wisdom of the day the Internet is full of recommendations on how to get rid of unsightly stomach fat. While yoga helps to build muscle and burn fat all over the body, including the middle, some forms of yoga are more effective than others for burning calories and reducing fat. Womens Health evaluated different types of yoga to determine what type of yoga burned the most calories. Hatha yoga is a gentle form of yoga that burns approximately 175 calories per hour. Power yoga will burn around 300 calories per hour, and Vinyasa yoga, which links poses in a vigorous, flowing routine, can burn 445 calories per hour. An intense yoga routine performed in a hot, humid room, called Bikram yoga or hot yoga, can burn up to 636 calories per hour, as much as an hour of running. With hot yoga you will probably notice some immediate weight loss due to water loss. Whether or not you actually lose stomach fat from practicing yoga, you will benefit from stretching, building and lengthening your muscles. The muscle-building and muscle-stretching moves performed during yoga help you look leaner, even if you maintain the same level of body fat, as well as providing you with gains in muscle strength and stability.
