HELOISE Loh Yee Hui fit the common image of a yoga instructor she is blessed with a slender figure and good complexion.

The 34-year-old attributes all this to yoga.

Loh said she was often sick when she was younger and suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. Nine years ago, she could not walk properly during severe attacks.

Her joints were extremely painful when she bent her knees. She could not bend her fingers as well.

Loh started to look for ways to manage her illness. She tried reading books on health and switched to an organic diet.

Whenever the arthritis struck, Loh could not focus on her job. She decided to follow her sister and pick up yoga after hearing of the health benefits associated with it.

Recalling her first class that lasted one-and-a-half hours, Loh said she could barely squat.

She also cried because of the pain and her lack of agility, but she was calm inside her heart. The class piqued her interest in yoga and she continued to attend the lessons.

Later, Loh quit her teaching job in Kuala Lumpur and returned to her hometown, Pulau Pangkor, for a break. Every morning, she went for a walk with her mother. Even climbing a small slope was strenuous for her because she could not stretch her joints.

Even her mother could walk faster than her.
