A chic exercise style offered by a Grand Rapids company has come to Holland.

The Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse in Holland Township offers Baptiste-style yoga classes in a room with the heat turned up to 95 degrees and 35 percent humidity.

Hot yoga is definitely become a growing trend, said teacher Larissa Link.

Funky Buddha isnt the only company riding the popularity of hot yoga. The exercises are supposed to relax participants while helping them burn calories and expel toxins by sweating.

Its ... a love-it-hate-it kind of thing, Link said. Many people find it addicting, she added.

Funky Buddha was started by Chris and Kerri Reinbold in Grand Rapids. The Holland Township location is their first expansion of the business.

Weve been in Grand Rapids now for two years now and weve been talking about new locations all the time, Link said.

Requests for them to locate elsewhere have been pouring in, but Holland won out because theres no (other) dedicated yoga space in the city, Link said.

The new location, in the Holland Town Center at 12330 James Street, started offering free community classes Dec. 1 and officially opened Dec. 8. Right now, about three to five classes of various types are offered each day from 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Right now, we are building out our staff so we can offer more classes, Link said.
