MORE than 200 people enjoyed yoga and meditation at Mackay's first yoga studio opening last Sunday.

Mackay Kundalini Yoga Healing Centre on Evans Ave opened it doors to droves of people wanting to de-stress and re-balance.

"Several times during the morning we had trouble fitting everyone in," teacher Barb Whitfield said.

All attendees received a free gift of yoga music or a calendar.

"We have been listening to what the community wants and so we have scheduled classes to include beginner's yoga, meditation, breathing and relaxation, pregnancy, back concerns and cancer recovery," Ms Whitfield explained.

"There is even a chair yoga class for those that are not able to sit on the floor."

She said the centre supported and assisted Lowanna House - Mackay's Homeless Women's Refuge.

"During the open morning, attendees donated several large baskets of goods and over $200 was raised to assist the residents," Ms Whitfield said.

"The money will be used to buy useful domestic items."
