In India, the streets and skies will come alive with firecrackers and fireworks for several days next month as the nation celebrates Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. In the District on Saturday, the celebrations will be a bit more subdued, but certainly still a ton of fun as the Freer and Sackler mark the opening of the exhibition "Yoga: The Art of Transformation" with their own (admittedly early) Diwali festivities that kick off at noon with a lamp-lighting in the courtyard by Indian ambassador Nirupama Rao.

An sandstone scuplture regarded as a yogini is on display as part of the Freer and Sackler's "Yoga: The Art of Transformation" exhibition. (Freer and Sackler galleries)

Bring the kids along for this family-centric day centered around "Yoga: The Art of Transformation," which explores the history of yogic practice and its roots in the religions of South Asia and Southeast Asia. On tap are South Asian board games; a live performance of meditation music from K. Sridhar; and stories from Louise Omoto Kessel, who will explain the stories of the Indian deities who inspired Diwali. Free yoga in the galleries will be offered each hour between 12:15 and 5:15 p.m. Registration is full, but show up early, and you might be able to squeeze in as a walk-in. The day concludes with a concert of North Indian classical music at 7:30 p.m.
