Study: Half of New Yorkers will be obese by 2030
Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings announced an initiative designed to reduce the number of people who are obese - whose body mass index (a measure of body fat relative to height) - is twenty percent higher than normal.Eat Healthy Albany begins Sunday at the Palace Theater with a free demonstration of how to choose and prepare nutritious foods. Chef Gail Sokol will make a presentation."We #39;re in an epidemic, folks," Sokol told a small gathering at the mayor #39;s announcement ceremony Wednesday. "This is the first generation where our children may not outlive their parents - and that #39;s frightening to me."Jennings #39; announcement came the day after news of a study by the Trust for America #39;s Health that predicts half of New Yorkers will be obese by 2030 unless changes are made in diet and excercise."It is my hope that children, parents, friends and neighbors will encourage each other to take part in this initiative," the mayor said, "helping to improve our community #39;s overall quality of life." The program involves Sokol visiting students in city schools to help them understand the importance of eating healthful food.Tickets for Sunday #39;s event at the Palace are available at the box office or by calling 465-3335.
