School might be out for the summer, but students and nonstudents alike still can check off a few of the books on their spiritual reading list.

Those interested in discussing authors with diverse thoughts about spiritual awakening can join two upcoming readings and discussions. One is a discussion of Eckhart Tolle's spiritual books; the other explores the ways some meditation students become "stuck" when balancing Zen practice and their modern lives and emotions.

Those who are interested in discussing the works of Tolle, a spiritual teacher known for his popular book series about living in the present and finding purpose in life, can attend a book group at 2:30 p.m. Sundays at Unity of Boulder, 2855 Folsom St., Boulder. The gathering is open to anyone interested in discussing Tolle's works.

This week, the group is discussing Tolle's 2005 book, "A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose."

Tolle said his ideas are meant to be "signposts pointing toward awakening" in order to move away from modern life's violence and sadness and move closer to a sense of inner peace and spiritual awareness.

The book has been an integral part of the past few Sunday sermons at Unity Church, with minister Jack Groverland and his daughter, assistant minister Syntysche Groverland, weaving Tolle's philosophies into parts of the 11 a.m. Sunday services.

Tolle's work has resonated with the congregation, Groverland said.

"It's such a powerful book," she said. "It gives you the tools you need to get rid of your ego ... and (shows) that every moment is a miracle, even the bad stuff."

Groverland said the Tolle book discussion group is an opportunity for people to read passages and apply them to their own spiritual journeys.

Groverland, a mother of four, said the book helped her when one of her children died several years ago. Groverland, who went through a divorce last year, also said the book helped keep her centered and reminded her that her struggles have enabled her to find joy and learn valuable life lessons about choosing to explore her inner spiritual self.
