Hong Kong cardinal surrenders to police to help end street protests

Hong Kong

Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, retired bishop of Hong Kong, joined the civil disobedience movement organizers who surrendered to police Wednesday, with a hope to end the present occupation campaign that has lasted more than two months.

Zen remained at the police station for an hour. As he left, he asked people to pray for democracy in the city.

The Occupy Central movement, a civil disobedience campaign to block roads in central business area, was initiated by Benny Tai Yiu-ting, an associate professor of law at the University of Hong Kong, and the Rev. Chu Yiu-ming, a Baptist pastor, in an effort to force the Hong Kong and Chinese governments to allow true democracy in the city. The protesters feel government authorities have handpicked candidates for the 2017 election of Hong Kong's chief executive.

Zen had said on his blog in late November that struggling for democracy may be a long road, but a "miracle may take place, like David hurls a stone to hit down Goliath. And no one would expect that the Berlin Wall fell down all of a sudden 25 years ago."

The cardinal, 82, is a supporter to the Occupy Central movement. Last June, he launched a walking campaign, covering 52 miles over seven days in different areas in Hong Kong, to ask more people to join an unofficial referendum on democratic reforms.

Benny Tai also turned himself in to police Dec. 3. He told reporters after he left the police station that it was time to promote civic education in different platforms, instead of continuing the occupation, as insisted on by the student group.

Recently, protesters and the police had clashed violently. Many academics said police used excessive force to clear the roads.

Urban Zen: Holiday shopping for a good cause

WEST VILLAGE (WABC) --

The store is called Urban Zen.

"Everybody walks in and goes, wow, this place is so cool," Donna said.

It's not just a place. Urban Zen is part of a much bigger movement.

"Everything is hand crafted with real soul behind it," said Donna.

A soulful economy, a concept Donna Karan stands by and is a guiding force behind this magical space.

Set in her late husband's studio, Donna tells me this marketplace embodies what Stephan Weiss stood for.

"Through Urban Zen, we've been able to continue his legacy and his passion, that of art, that of education, that of healthcare," she said.

You see, each piece has a story behind it. Bags covered with metal tabs, bracelets made out of guns collected from the streets, installations created with medical beakers.

Each when sold, will help people around the world.

Cardinal Joseph Zen Released From Jail With Occupy Central Leaders

Was Arrested for Taking to Streets, Defending Hong Kong's Democracy Vatican City, December 03, 2014 (Zenit.org) Staff Reporter | 341 hits

Cardinal Joseph Zen, Archbishop Emeritus of Hong Kong, has been released from jail.

The 82-year-old cardinal was released by police along with the leaders of the Occupy Movement from the Sheung Wan police station today after surrendering for not having followed police orders to clear a sit-in, reported AsiaNews.

The cardinal and organizers were detained after signing a form aimed at defending freedom in Hong Kong, which is the goal of the Occupy movement. The form said they took part in a rally from September 28th, which was unauthorized and may have broken laws under public order ordinance.

Pro-Beijing forces say the Occupy movement undermines Hong Kongs well-being.

The source notes that while Cardinal Zen has taken to the streets to defend freedom, his successor John Tung appeals to both sides to engage in dialogue.

The organizers of Occupy Central have defended their actions as "civil disobedience," and the movement's actions have been non-violent.Among them are Benny Tai, professor of law; Chan Kin-man, a professor of sociology; and the Rev. Chu Yiu-min.

Although greeted by some supporters at the police station, some representing pro-China groups ridiculed them and accused them of dividing the society and endangering Hong Kongs economic well-being. The source goes on to explain that the figures do not indicate this is true.

While the movement's call for democracy in Hong Kong has not seemed to win a major victory, the source explained that the campaign has raised awareness to new generations for the need for democracy.
