LeBron credits yoga class for help with cramps

LeBron James had no issues Sunday after cramping up in Game 1. (Christopher Trotman/NBAE/Getty Images)

After debilitating leg cramps took LeBron James out of action during the final minutes ofGame 1, both James and the Heat were more proactive in readying his body for the rigors of Game 2. That included, among a more extensive hydration regimen, James decision to attend aSunday morning yoga class at the Heats team hotel in San Antonio. I imaginethere was some surprise among the casual yogis who entered the makeshift studioto find James a 6-8, 250-pound behemoth knocking out a firefly pose as a warmup.

One thing I did do differently this morning, I took an 8 a.m. yoga class at our resort that we stayed at outside, James explained after Game 2. Me, and three other people and also a little kid but he didnt want no parts of it. So thats probably the only thing that I did differently today.

This is far from a one-time occurrence for James, who has been active in the discipline since his days in Cleveland.

Yoga isnt just about the body, its also about the mind and its a technique that has really helped me, James told Brian Windhorst (then of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer) in 2009. You do have to focus because theres some positions that can really hurt you at times if you arent focused and breathing right.

Upon his arrival in Miami, James also credited yoga for his supernatural level of endurance. Only Kevin Durant has logged more total minutes since James joined the Heat in 2011.

I do Pilates and yoga, just try to stay above the curve to get to this point, James said in 2011, per the Miami Herald. So, I mean, I feel like its helping me. Does it work for everybody? I dont know. Im not a guru about how to be in the best condition, dont let me sit here and tell you that. But it works for me.

James is hardly the only Finals-relevant player to dabble in yoga as a means of physical maintenance. Dwyane Wade added it to his game preparation, in part to loosen his hips. The Spurs have also coordinated yoga sessions as a team for years, and may have a leg up on their Finals opponents:

Yoga teaches kids to focus while having fun

PARTNER Flying Warrior BEYOND YOGA

Children do get stressed. If you dont know that yet, youre either never around kids, or you dont know your children well enough.

We live in a harried world. Parents are popping in and out of their childrens lives, while children try to cope with absentee moms or dads, excessive shyness, school pressure, competitive peers, and overbearing classmates. This blitzkrieg of influences may appear trivial to adults, but oftentimes, to children, they are not.

Kids Yoga, a 45-minute class designed specifically for children, may help kiddies navigate lifes challenges a little better. It teaches the little ones, for example, to breathe deeply if theyre upset.

We teach them how the breath affects how you feel. Bata pa lang, youre training them to be calm, to not be too aggressive, said the chirpy Bubbles Paraiso, model/actress turned certified yoga instructor for children.

PARTNER Boat with Tree BEYOND YOGA

Paraiso earned her certification to teach Kids Yoga from Yogi Beans New York associate director of programs Jessica Noe. Noe was in the country to give a series of workshops at Beyond Yoga.

Beyond Yoga will offer Kids Yoga on June 14, 21 and 28 at its Greenhills branch (2/F Metro Pointe Center, P. Guevarra cor. N. Avenila Sts., San Juan City; tel. no. 0917-8143886). There will also be classes in the BGC Central branch (3/F C2 Building, 7th Ave. cor. 28th St., Taguig; tel. nos. 5533799 and 0917-6299642).

Flexibility

There are many benefits children can reap from yoga. It can strengthen them physically, mentally, emotionally and psychologically. They develop better coordination, and become mindful of themselves and their surroundings. It also promotes flexibility, and helps them maintain it as they grow up.

Yoga Poses to Stay Cool This Summer

Posted: at 4:46 pm

As temperatures soar, even the most balanced among us could benefit from advice on how to stay cool this summer. Enter accomplished yogi Joann Burnham.

On July 11, Burnham will kick off the Third Annual Nantucket Yoga Festival. For those of us unable to take part in the "transformational weekend" in paradise, Burnham has put together a straightforward sequence designed to promote inner calm and visible strength.

The director of Dharma Yoga Nantucket promises that a sequence of just five simple poses can not only soothe frazzled nerves, but also tone winter-weary bodies.

"We're all juggling jobs and children and responsibilities and that really agitates the nervous system," Burnham explained. "But in the summer, that element of heat is an added irritant."

To combat the elemental aggravation, Burnham encourages practitioners to concentrate on lengthening their breathing. We feel cooler already.

Stand with your big toes touching, heels slightly apart. Find all four corners of each foot evenly connected to the mat. Relax your face. Soften your eyes. Allow yourself the luxury of standing still and breathing for 30 seconds.

Inhale the arms up overhead, exhale fold forward. Take a slight bend in the knees and connect the chest to the thighs. Hold on behind the ankles with the hands. Connect to the breath. On each exhale create some space by walking the heart gently toward the toes. Stay here for 5 full breaths. Place the hands on either side of the feet and step back into downward-facing dog.

Set your knees directly below your hips and your hands slightly forward from your shoulders. Spread the fingers wide and feel the fingers connected to the mat. Keep the head between the upper arms. Without moving the hands or the press the seat and hips back. Stay here for 5 full breaths. Inhale and shift the torso forward into plank.

Press your outer arms inward and press your index fingers into the floor Press the shoulder blades down and back. Let the gaze float down. Reach back through the tailbone and the heels. Reach the belly button towards the spine. Stay here for 10 full breaths then press back into downward facing dog.

Shift all the weight forward come back into plank. Shift onto the outside edge of your left foot, and stack your right foot on top of the left. Lift the hips and open the heart raising the right arm to the sky. Find the body in one long line from the heels to the crown. Let the gaze float up. Stay here for 5 full breaths. Return to plank, roll over onto the opposite side of the body and repeat for 5 full breaths. Return to plank. Press back into downward-facing dog for 3 full breaths then press all the way back into Balasana (Childs Pose). Rest here for 10 full breaths.
