Michael Franti brings yoga to the concert stage with the inaugural Soulshine Tour

Posted: July 25, 2014 at 6:44 pm

While pop superstars try to outdo each other in production and over-the-top theatrics on tour each year, its rare to see something audiences havent seen before.

Sunday, musician and activist Michael Franti brings the first-ever Soulshine Tour to Charlotte. And it brings Frantis backstage yoga practice to fans who can participate in an outdoor yoga class as Franti plays an acoustic set, before the actual festival-style bill starts.

The show, which takes place at Uptown Ampitheatre, features Franti and Spearhead, Soja, Brett Dennen, Trevor Hall and Sonna Rele.

Last winter, Hall joined Franti at his yoga retreat in Bali, playing a benefit for a local birthing center and school.

He was talking about doing a tour like this. In the new year he called and said, Hey were doing this tour, recalls reggae-rock/world soul-songwriter Hall, who jumped at the chance. Its his first tour since taking a lengthy sabbatical that ended with the surprise release recently of new album, Chapter of the Forest.

Hall first experienced yoga in ninth grade, when a friend who he noticed never drank or smoked at parties invited him to a class.

I remember my mom picked me up. I was like, Mom, I feel great. It was crazy. This is so cool, Hall says with a laugh. He brought his mat the first time he toured with Franti.

Trying to hang, Hall says. He would grab me before the show. Wed practice backstage and he was a great teacher. We became really close. Hes like the father. Hes been doing it for so long, touring and all that stuff.

Although hes now been practicing for 13 years, Franti wasnt sold on yoga at first.

I was like most people, especially most men. I couldnt touch my toes. I had this stereotype in my head that you had to be flexible and sit for long periods of time, says Franti, a former college athlete. I felt better immediately. My back doesnt hurt. My shoulder doesnt hurt. I just loved it. Every town Id go to Id pop in a different class. I go to Yoga One in Charlotte.

1,000 Expected For West Hartford Yoga Event Saturday

Posted: July 25, 2014 at 6:44 pm

without comments

WEST HARTFORD In the four years that West Hartford Yoga has been holding its annual "Om Street" outdoor event on LaSalle Road, the number of yoga enthusiasts participating has grown exponentially.

"Last year we had almost 650 people, and we are in line for 1,000 this year. It's a big event ... we have 22 studios participating at this point, from all the way down in Groton to out in Harwinton," said Jen Leavitt, studio manager of West Hartford Yoga, the event's host and sponsor.

"It's an emotional blast of really good, feel-good energy, and also just to see how far yoga has come in this state and other places. Who would have thought, 25, 30 years ago, that there would be this kind of response to a yoga event?"

Led by yoga teacher Barbara Ruzansky, the free event is scheduled for Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. Free parking will be available in town-owned area lots until 11 a.m., and participants are encouraged to arrive at least 15 minutes early to secure a spot on LaSalle Road. Event sponsor Lululemon will provide a limited number of yoga mats, but participants are encouraged to bring their own mats and water.

The weather, "couldn't be more perfect in terms of the forecast," Leavitt said. The town public works department will sweep LaSalle Road in preparation for the event, and police will shut down the street between Farmington Avenue and Arapahoe Road at 6 a.m., and reopen it to traffic at 10 a.m.

Everyone is invited to participate, including those who may have never tried yoga.

"The old story is, 'I'm too inflexible to do yoga,' or, 'I've never done it before.' If that describes you, do not be intimidated by this experience because we have everything from little kids laying on their mats we had a dog on a mat a couple years ago really, this is the time," Leavitt said. "It doesn't matter what you can do or not do, a lot of it is just about being in the experience."

The event is an all-levels, "classic vinyasa or hatha yoga experience, combining movement and breath in a safe and supported fashion, with lots of modifications offered," Leavitt said. The event is unique because of its outdoor, large-scale atmosphere, she said.

"It's a collective energy unlike anything i've ever experienced," Leavitt said.

Ann Arbor yoga studio to hold fundraising class to benefit Dawn Farm

Posted: July 26, 2014 at 8:53 am

without comments

YPSILANTI Bikram Yoga Ann Arbor West studio will hold a special fundraising class to benefit Dawn Farm at 12 p.m. Sunday, July 17.

All proceeds from the class will be donated to Dawn Farm. Walk-in classes at BYAAW (227 N. Maple Road in Ann Arbor) are typically $18. The suggested donation for Sunday's class is $10, but participants may contribute whatever they can.

Dawn Farm is the largest provider of services for people with addictions in Washtenaw County and has been around since 1973. Dawn Farm is a Michigan addiction treatment center with an emphasis on the recovering community as the most important source of healing and recovery support for its clients. Dawn Farm is a 501c(3) non-profit organization.

Were just thrilled to be the recipient of Bikram Yoga Ann Arbor Wests fundraising series, said Dawn Farm President Jim Balmer. We treat lots of people who have no other place to go and this fundraising allows us to take more addicts and alcoholics off the streets.

Weve been in the human services field for 40 years, Balmer continued. The addiction treatment field has collapsed and there just arent that many treatment centers around.

Dawn Farm offers residential and detoxification services to people who are on the streets, as well as outpatient treatment services and transitional housing.

The requested donation is $10 but whatever students can contribute is welcomed. One-hundred percent of the money raised will go to Dawn Farm. Rosenbaum is also dedicating part of the studio to education. Information is made available to the students about the organizations they are donating to.

Studio owner Lora Rosenbaum says she not only believes in social programs but feels it is her responsibility to support them.

There have been so many funding cuts for social program, but social program are so important to our community, she said. This is all about responsibility for local businesses; its our job to give back to social programs, and were not the only ones. Many small businesses give back to the communities"

I am so grateful to be able to be part of a community that gives this to organization, Rosenbaum said. Dawn Farm is also all about giving and healing, just like the yoga. They give people a chance, give every single person a chance and helps people save themselves." Continued...

How Yoga Informs Parenting: Value in Not Knowing

Posted: July 25, 2014 at 6:44 pm

In yoga, a pose referred to by my teacher as "how wonderful" involves a lifting of the head and chest, and opening of the arms out to the side, with a bend in the elbows.

What if instead, we employ the open stance of "I don't know?"-words she demonstrated fit perfectly with the pose of "how wonderful."

In my behavioral pediatric practice, I find parents often driven by a need to know. "Is there something wrong with him?" they ask. There are tremendous pressures -from teachers, from family, from insurance companies, to name the problem. There is a kind of certainty in this approach, a kind of professional declaring of "I know whats wrong with you."

What if, rather than being guided by diagnostic instruments, that ask questions with the aim of getting an answer, we approach the situation with a stance of curiosity, of inquiry, of "not knowing."

I find if, in a way not dissimilar to the hour-long yoga class, I offer space and time to let the story unfold, we uncover complex meaning in "problem" behavior. There may be a number of relatives with similar traits, suggesting a genetic component. There may have been significant stresses in a family that, even with parents' best efforts to shield a child from the effects, have been noticed and absorbed. A child may have a range of sensory sensitivities that he can manage, but under the stress of separation, often at bedtime or in the process of getting out the door, these sensitivities are magnified. "Problem" behavior may be both cause of and result of family conflict between parents, among siblings, between generations.

There is courage in a stance of not knowing. In yoga, we trust our teacher to guide us in the backbends that evolve out of the "how wonderful/I don't know" pose. The work is hard. She challenges us while taking care to protect us from harm.

Perhaps professionals who care for children with "behavior problems" -pediatricians, psychiatrists, teachers- could learn a lesson from my yoga teacher (support from the health care system that decided what is and is not "covered" would be essential to this kind of approach.) Ratherthan being guided by aneed to make a "diagnosis," we would support parents in a safe, holding environment through a time of not knowing, on a journey to find the true meaning of behavior.

This kind of journey might not only serve to decrease the number of children receiving psychiatric diagnoses, but also help us to discover creative solutions. We would have the opportunity to uncover both weaknesses and strengths, and to support development of resilience. In the words of pediatrician turnedpsychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott, we would be promoting development of a child's "true self."

How wonderful.
