Boulder workout of the week: Mega Yoga Flow

Posted: at 8:45 pm

without comments

Boco Fit, 2100 Pearl St., unit C, Boulder, 720-441-4450, bocofitness.com

Instructor: Amy Dalton, of Boulder, who is a certified Lagree Fitness instructor and also a certified yoga instructor at CorePower. She created Mega Yoga Flow and launched it this month.

What is the workout? A combination of Vinyasa yoga on the M3 Megaformer machine with Lagree Fitness exercises.

Lagree Fitness is considered "Pilates on crack," because it also trains core, balance, flexibility, strength and endurance on machines that resemble Pilates Reformer machines except they are bigger, with more springs (which allows for more weight), with a back platform and an assortment of different moves.

This new class adds a simple and slow yoga flow into the Megaformer training.

Classes typically warm up with yoga, then move into Lagree Method and then wind down the body with yoga.

What's different? Boco Fit is the only studio in Boulder County to offer Lagree Fitness on the Megaformer and the only studio in the world offering Mega Yoga Flow. Yet. The studio expects other studios to pick it up quickly, and Dalton wants to teach it to other Lagree instructors with yoga backgrounds.

"Yoga helps bring greater awareness to Lagree, by breathing, focusing on staying in the moment," Dalton says. "One of my desires is to help people find real, deep awareness in their bodies, regardless of what they're doing, whether that's training hard physically or walking down the street. There is a subtle shift when you start slowing down and working with the breath more."

Cost: $15 for first-time clients.

Yoga Shorts by Yoga Works Yoga to Go

Traveling can be stressful, a lot of hurry up and wait. Things are often our of your control and comfort zone.

Yoga comes in handy for the stress as well as the confinement of sitting for hours.

Whether traveling by car, train, bus, boat or plane you too can have yoga to go. Past articles on stretches, breathing etc.can be found at yogaworks4all.com, why not print them out and take them along.

Many yoga stretches and breathing exercises are subtle micro movements, most poses can be modified to be under the radar of fellow passengers. You do not have to carry a yoga mat, wear special clothing or have a large open space to keep your stress level low, joints flexible and your mind at ease, your body is all you need. If you divide and conquer, giving your mind a task to do, like a focused breathing pattern, your body will relax. All the poses and stretches in my articles are meant to be used as a guide for taking yoga off the mat and into everyday life. Practiced while standing, sitting or waiting in line, great for around the home or office, they can be modified and practiced while traveling.

Focused breathing and meditation, other than the Purring Breath, are completely invisible to any bystander. The Following Breath, Meditative Breath and Moving with the Breath are all a gentle way of staying centered and relaxed. Yoga Shorts #3 Partial Spinal Twist, is a great way to keep your spinal column supple, it revitalizes the whole of your back and refreshes your mind. Good circulation is very important especially on long flights. Feet and Ankles and Lotus Hands are good ones for that. And who doesnt like a nice gentle back message, treat yourself to one with the Shoulder Roll Back Message.

When you arrive at your destination you will feel refreshed and ready to go instead of stiff, achy, frustrated and tired.

Yoga on the go is relaxing and simple to do. Taking yoga off the mat makes traveling easier on you!

Bogota resident to have signings and yoga classes for new book

Posted: at 8:45 pm

6 P.M. FRIDAY, GLEN ROCK;6:30 P.M. SUNDAY, TEANECK

peace out

When a book is about the life-altering impact of yoga, it only makes sense that the signings should come with a yoga class. That's exactly what Bogota resident Kathryn Livingston is doing for her new book, "Yin, Yang, Yogini: A Woman's Quest for Balance, Strength and Inner Peace."

TELL ME MORE: Before readings and book signings at two North Jersey events, people can take a class from the instructors Livingston talks about in the book. In "Yin, Yang, Yogini," Livingston tells the story of her struggles with anxiety and her fight against breast cancer, as well as touching on parenting issues, friendship, marriage and politics and, of course, yoga. She wants everyone to know that this book is not just for yoga lovers. As a matter of fact, she's trying to get word out to those who are like she was a decade ago people who don't know about the potential emotional and psychological benefits of the practice.

QUOTE: "I really just thought it was people doing pretzel shapes. I had no idea it could really calm your anxiety, change your outlook on life from negative to positive, from fear-based to trust. I had no idea. It was really an eye-opening, transformative experience. Livingston on yoga

DETAILS: Friday: Discussion and yoga with Liz Aitken-O'Brien, Naturally Yoga, 175 Rock Road, Glen Rock; 201-612-7330 or naturallyyoga.com. $20. Reservations required.
