Vegetarian granted divorce after being harassed with non-vegetarian food on her plate

Deliberately putting non-vegetarian food on the plate of a vegetarian is one of the many allegations levelled by a 28-year old woman against her in-laws, while seeking divorce from her 29-year-old husband before the family court.

The woman claimed that she was subjected to harassment by her in-laws after she got married in May 2011.

According to a copy of the order, her mother-in-law would abuse her in filthy language and also physically. Her husband, a short-tempered man, would also scream abuse at her.

A copy of the complaint read, "The woman claimed that she was a vegetarian and so she had informed about it to her husband before getting married, however things changed after marriage. Her mother-in-law would deliberately add non- vegetarian food in her plate to harass her. It was just because of the said incident that the woman had to skip her meals a number of times, thus suffering ill-health."

The woman further claimed that four months after the marriage, her father-in-law abused her for not bringing in any dowry and assaulted her. Once her in-laws also threw her out of the house at midnight, when she was dressed in her night clothes.

The woman further claimed that her husband had also threatened her with dire consequences. The man once alleged that his father was a policeman, because of which the woman could not take legal action against him.

The court, after going through the petition, asked her husband and his family to file their reply, however they did not respond to the court's instruction.

The court held that since the complaint went unopposed, the woman had proven the case of cruelty against her husband and in-laws and granted with divorce.

PM Narendra Modi effect on burgers Down Under

Posted: at 12:50 am

A little over a month after PM Narendra Modi visited Australia, the Gujarat effect doesn't seem to be wearing off Down Under. At least that's what Adelaide's burger chain, Burger Addiction's (BA) recent inclusion of a vegetarian burger Jai Jai Gujarat suggests.

The vegetarian entrant, which the menu calls, "A medley of roasted vegetables with western Indian spices with chipotle aioli, sliced tomato and mesclun greens," already has two other entries for company.

"We had Champion Champignon (pureed sauteed mushroom and oat patty topped with sliced tomato, mesclun greens and pesto aioli) and Woodstock (spiced felafel patty topped with hummus, julienne cucumber, carrot, sliced tomato, mesclun greens and roasted garlic aioli), and these are favourites with most vegetarians, but we felt the significantly large number of Indian vegetarians still kept looking for options which would suit their palate... that's how the new dish came about," explains Kate William from BA's sales team.

She said it had turned out to be a fast moving item on the menu even among non-vegetarians. "Novelty seems to be at work here," she smiles and adds, "Actual trends will only emerge after a while once the product has established itself," about the AUD 9 (Rs468) burger.

While many link this to the Indian premiere's visit, William is unwilling to make any political comment. "Decisions like these are commercial and not dictated by emotional or political compulsions," she adds.

Others, one among them Ravi Iyengar, a software expert with an IT solutions major who is actively involved with the Australian South Asian Federation, disagrees. "Indians have always been here but the consolidation that was caused by PM Modi's visit hasn't gone unnoticed. Businesses want profit. If it means tweaking menus to tickle palates, then they are just playing ball," he says.

However, mental health practitioner Frankey Fernandes insists, "Modiphiles are unnecessarily linking their mascot with a business decision. The engineered crowds at his dos can't translate into sales." He was also sceptical of how "Indian" a burger like that would taste.

The new introduction has left Adelaide homemaker and mother of two Mohana Dhoble-Kannan quite happy. Though married to a Tamil Brahmin and "compulsively non-vegetarian", she's glad with BA's new inclusion. "We're having a get-together soon near Rundle Mall and my strictly vegetarian friends were worried about what to eat. Sandwiches and salads still don't qualify as lunch for most Indians, including me. Now, this new burger offers an option," she says.

Behind her the salesgirl calls out to the next customer: "One Jai Jai Gujarat, fries and a small coke!"

India in Australia: Angry Ishant Sharma Leaves Gabba Because of no Vegetarian Food

Posted: at 1:51 am

Ishant Sharma was unhappy at not being able to procure vegetarian food on Day 3 at lunch in Brisbane.

Brisbane: Barely two weeks after mutually sharing the grief of Phillip Hughes' death, Indian team's relations with Cricket Australia is turning sour as pacer Ishant Sharma left the Gabba at lunch on the third day, after finding that there was no vegetarian preparation in the menu. (Scorecard | Blog)

Apparently they have been unhappy with the food provided to the visitors ever since they landed here.

The team was very unhappy about the food provided at Glenelg Oval for the two practice matches and the same was notified to the concerned authorities. However they did not make their grievance public as it was the time that the nation was in mourning after Hughes' tragedy.

The team was happy with the arrangements made for the first Test in Adelaide where South Australia Cricket Association arranged for an Indian chef to prepare food for the Indian team during the match.

But things have taken a turn for the worse here in Brisbane. On day three, proper vegetarian food was not provided at lunch, as was noticed in the media room as well.

Two Indian players Ishant Sharma and Suresh Raina complained about the same. They then proceeded outside the stadium premises to procure proper vegetarian food for themselves, accompanied by ICC's ACSU personnel and team director Ravi Shastri.

However on their return, they were told that food or beverages can't be brought inside the stadium.

The two players consumed their food sitting outside and then returned to the dressing room. It should be noted that Raina isn't playing in this match, though Ishant is and he bowled for India on the third day.

Despite the incident being of unprecedented nature where one of the cricketers had left the venue in the middle of the match, ICC's ACSU unit refused to make any comments in this regard.

Yes, that’s a vegetarian, meat-eating plant

Carnivorous plants are so named because they capture and digest tiny creatures for nutritional purposes, but new research published Thursday in the journal Annals ofBotany suggests that they are capable of overcoming their natural instincts and converting to vegetarianism.

According to the website Science 2.0, researchers from the University of Vienna report that the aquatic carnivorous bladderwort, which can be found in many lakes and ponds worldwide, dines not only on small animals but also algae and pollen grains if prey animals are hard to find.

This practice can improve the evolutionary fitness of the bladderworts if they properly balance animals and algae, wrote Marianne Koller-Peroutka and Wolfram Adlassnig of the University of Viennas Core Facility Cell Imaging and Ultrastructure Research and colleagues from the Silver-Stable Isotope Lab and the Gregor Mendel Institute for Molecular Plant Biology.

Aquatic bladderworts catch their prey with highly sophisticated suction traps consisting of little bladders that produce a hydrostatic under pressure, the study authors said in a statement. A valve-like trap door opens upon stimulation and the surrounding water including tiny organism flushes in rapidly within three milliseconds.

Once the prey enters the trap, it dies of suffocation, and the bladderworts digestive enzymes begin to degrade it. Due to the minerals provided by those prey organisms, the aquatic creatures are able to live and propagate, even when their habitats are extremely poor in nutrients.

Algae was first observed within the traps of bladderworts (Utricularia) as early as 1900, but their role within the prey spectrum is just now being analyzed. The authors looked at prey objects in over 2,000 traps, and found that just 10 percent were animals while 50 percent were algae. More algae was present in those living in nutrient poor habitats such as peat bogs, they added.

Over one-third of the prey consisted of pollen grain from trees growing on shore areas of the home waters, they added, but the bladderworts do not appear to select what it eats. Rather, it sucks in all living things, plant or animal, that are small enough to fit within its trap.
