Vegan sneakers set to be next sustainable plant-based craze in 2020 – CNN

Posted: at 2:55 pm

without comments

Last week, Reebok, owned by Adidas (ADDDF) since 2005, unveiled the design for its first plant-based running shoe, the Floatride GROW, which is expected to hit store shelves in the fall of 2020.

The upper part of the shoe is made primarily from eucalyptus. Its soles are made from castor beans and natural rubber. The scheduled debut comes two years after Reebok started selling a "vegan" version of its famed Newport (NP) Classic shoes made with cotton and corn. The more sustainable version of the NP Classics are "lifestyle" footwear not designed for athletic performance.

In contrast, Reebok brand president Matt O'Toole says the Floatride GROW is sturdy enough to handle the wear and tear from intense and constant use by athletes.

"One of the challenges for the innovations team was [the Floatride GROW] had to be equal to or better to" the vegan NP Classics, O'Toole told CNN Business. "We actually have our own testing machines. The shoe holds up just as well as our other [athletic] shoes."

Reebok and Adidas are just two of the major athletic retailers vying to get in on the ground floor of what experts expect to eventually be a booming plant-based sneaker market, as discarded footwear fills up US landfills.

Most shoe waste is comprised of non-biodegradable plastic, leather and petroleum-based rubber, materials that take an average of 25 to 80 years to decompose naturally, multiple shoe companies told CNN Business.

In recent years, calls for climate change reform and for major corporations to engage in more sustainable business practices have created a niche market among young people who are interested in shoes that are more biodegradable.

A 2019 "future of footwear" study commissioned by the market research firm NPD found that Millennials and Generation Z, the primary consumers of athletic footwear, are "very concerned" about the environment.

"Our survey shows that consumers were concerned about where their shoes were made and whether or not they were made ethically," NPD senior sports industry advisor Matt Powell told CNN Business. "About 35% of respondents said they would be willing to pay more for a shoe sustainability made. While it isn't the entire market, that's certainly a category for growth."

The shoes have been resold for as much as $1,446 per pair on second-hand retail sites.

Maharashi sales associate Miles Chick said the promotion's organizers were inundated with requests to enter the online raffle for Nike's vegan sneakers. "When word spread, it just started kind of ringing alarms in the vegan community," he said.

Nike says sustainability has been at the core of its business for decades, but noted that recent research about climate change has compelled the company to change the way it makes and sells its shoes.

"We exist to serve athletes. ... We know that if there is no planet there is no sport," a Nike spokesperson told CNN Business in an emailed statement. "Advancing a more sustainable future requires companies of all sizes to think holistically, innovate solutions and adopt the principles of circularity."

Powell, the sports industry advisor, says the jury is still out on how many Americans will purchase shoes made from more sustainable materials over the versions they know and love.

"I think there's a whole lot of other things that go into what makes a shoe successful," he said. "The style has to be right and the shoe has to perform. Reebok knows how to make shoes. I'm pretty convinced this shoe will do well."

Healthy Plant-Based Chicken Alternative Coming to the U.S. in February 2020! – One Green Planet

Posted: at 2:55 pm

without comments

There are countless plant-based meats available in stores and restaurants now. From classic meatless brands like Gardein, Quorn, and Morningstar Farms to newer meaty mainstream brands like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods.Unlike meat, dairy, and eggs, plant-based foods are proven to be better for preventing diseases like type 2 diabetes, alleviating arthritis, healthier gut and digestion, better cholesterol levels, improved cognition, and more. Studies have proven that eating plant-based foods is much healthier than consuming animal products, but consumers still have an important concern: are plant-based meat alternatives really that much healthier, or healthy at all?

Well one startup company is aiming to relieve consumers of that worry. Daring Foods has created a plant-based chicken alternative that they claim is much healthier than meatandother meat replacements. It is made with five non-genetically modified ingredients water, soy, sunflower oil, salt and natural flavoring (a mix of paprika, pepper, ginger, nutmeg, mace, cardamom).

Daring Foods co-founder and CEO Ross Mackay told TechCrunch: Theres a big need for plant-based food thats actually healthy. The chicken is currently being sold in the United Kingdom as of this year, but after a $10 million investment from Rastelli Foods Group, a major U.S. food company, they plan to launch in the U.S. in February!

They will sell directly to consumers through their website, and to restaurants and retailers. Although the CEO Mackay is vegan, the consumers he hopes to reach are meat eaters who are looking to incorporate plant-based foods or transition to plant-based diets. He told Anthony Ha of TechCrunch that he is hoping to create what he calls a second generation of plant-based meat products healthier than the first, and therefore a bigger part of everyday diets.

Reducing your meat intake and eating more plant-based foods is known to help with chronic inflammation, heart health, mental wellbeing, fitness goals, nutritional needs, allergies, gut health and more! You can’t be a vegan and still eat at Mcdonald’s – Metro.co.uk

Posted: at 2:55 pm

without comments

The burger giant has just announced that it will launch a fully vegan meal in January, 2020 (Picture: McDonalds)

Veganism has gone mainstream, so its easy to forget what life used to be like for us plant-munchers.

In restaurants we had to endure awkward conversations with bewildered waiters, who would disappear to the kitchen and return saying they could do us the salad with the cheese picked out and the dressing left off. Wed go home hungry.

Now virtually all chain restaurants and cafes offer delicious vegan options and we can dine almost as happily as everyone else and McDonalds is about to join the party.

The fast food chain will be rolling out its first fully vegan meal on 2 January a year on from the much-hyped launch of Greggs vegan sausage roll and just in time for the annual Veganuary gimmick.

As the burger giant becomes the latest brand to try to seduce vegans into its restaurants with a carefully-targeted product, you might think it wouldnt have a hope in hell. Vegans in McDonalds? No chance!

But despite criticism of the chain over animal suffering,as outlined in a report by World Animal Protection, the seduction will succeed.

Why? Because a lot of vegans believe that spending money at chains like McDonalds will show a demand for plant-based products and bring an end to the slaughter and exploitation of animals.

On social media, vegans post photographs of overflowing supermarket baskets or restaurant tables groaning under the weight of vegan meals, proudly boasting that theyre showing the demand for these dishes, and changing the world.

And when the likes of KFC and Burger King launch plant-based products, they are, astonishingly, given uncritical publicity by vegan publications.

Once McDonalds launches its plant-based meal, lots of vegans will undoubtedly pour through the doors, believing that by handing money to cow slaughterers they will somehow help bring the slaughtering of cows to an end.

Likewise, when Burger King launched its plant-based Impossible Whopper, many vegans said that it would encourage meat-eaters to stop eating meat but thats not what happened.

As Jos Cil, CEO of Burger Kings parent company, Restaurant Brands International, said: We arent seeing guests swap the original Whopper for the Impossible Whopper its attracting new guests.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

In other words, meat-eaters continue to buy beef burgers and they still account for most of Burger Kings profits. The only difference is that vegans and vegetarians have started to come through the doors, too.

That sound you can hear is burger bosses laughing all the way to the bank.

It was the same story at Greggs. When the bakery giant launched its vegan sausage roll, it enjoyed a 58 per cent rise in profits and a surge in customer numbers, but if it had just been Greggs regulars who switched from meat to the plant-based sausage roll, profits would have stayed much the same.

Vegans arent changing the world by buying plant-based products from big chains, theyre just making animal slaughterers even richer.

And this successful seduction from big business has left many small, independent vegan businesses struggling to stay afloat.

They cant compete with the hype of Greggs or KFC, so they watch on broken-hearted as vegans stampede to bankroll animal slaughter.

As veganism becomes increasingly trendy, I suspect that a lot of vegans are secretly vegan for the trendiness or vegan for the consumerism

This all comes down to why you are vegan.

Some in the community say they are vegan for the animals, or vegan for the environment or vegan for health. If you fall into any of those camps, I cant see why youd eat in a McDonalds.

Simon Cowell shows off results of vegan diet as he soaks up Barbados rays with son Eric

Insiders at Greggs reveal a vegan steak bake is on the horizon

Greggs is extending their vegan range but won't tell us which products they're releasing

As veganism becomes increasingly trendy, I suspect that a lot of vegans are secretly vegan for the trendiness or vegan for the consumerism.

If you are either of those, then sure, go and eat a vegan meal in McDonalds if youd like to.

But if you are vegan because you want animal exploitation to actually end, and if you hope that a fairer society for animals could lead to a fairer society for people, then handing money to McDonalds, a company that exploits humans as well as animals, would be heretical.

Lots of vegans say they are activists, but their activism is just tapping credit cards against the contactless machines of big corporations.

That isnt activism, its capitalism and talk of ethical capitalism is as laughable as the meat industrys claims of humane slaughter.

The biggest health and wellness trends of 2019, from veganism to keto diets – USA TODAY

Posted: December 18, 2019 at 2:49 am

without comments

This paleo, vegan mashup is the latest trendy diet sweeping the nation. Here's how it works. USA TODAY

As 2019 comes to a close, we're taking a look back at the biggest health and wellness trends this year.

From certain diets to specialized products, the year has brought a variety of buzzy wellness trends.

Not only headlines have held the names of these wellness trends, celebrity social media posts have also promoted certain diets.

The keto diet, for example, has gotten praise from"Jersey Shore" star Vinny Guadagnino, which he credits for losing 50 pounds. And although they never directly referenceketo,Khloe Kardashian andVanessa Hudgens both credit their weight loss to a high fat, low carb diet.

We've rounded up some of the biggest headline-making trends, in no particular order:

Even vegetarians can rejoice over these new types of meat hitting the market. Here's why. Just the FAQs, USA TODAY

Though vegan diets started creeping into the mainstream in the last couple of years, 2019 saw the biggest increase in vegan hype and headlines.

From plant-based fast food optionsbecoming available across the country, like Burger King's Impossible Whopper, to articles on how to vegan-ize your Thanksgiving, this year has brought veganism to the forefront.

And it's not only fast food other industries are taking note too.

In September, Walt Disney Worldannounced that it will begin offering hundreds of plant-based options for its park-goers at all of its major quick and table service restaurants. Vegan options are also coming to Disneyland in spring 2020.

Celebrities speaking up about veganism has also been prevalent this year, fromJaden Smith's ups and downs with the dietto pop newcomer Billie Eilish slamming Lady Gaga's meat dress.

Though the ketogenic diethas been around for a while, it was everywhere in 2019, from keto movie theater snacks to celebrity endorsements.

In the diet, carbs are ditched to make room for high-quality fats and proteins. After several days of strict adherence, the body pushes through a period of lethargy to arrive at ketosis. In this highly efficient metabolic state, you burn stored fat for fuel and those stubborn love handles finally fade away.

To enter ketosis, dieters need to be eating fewer than 50 grams of carbs a day for a few days while maintaining a diet that's high in fat.

Some celebrity endorsements include Vanessa Hudgens plugging the "perfect keto snack!!," on her Instagram April, which was aSlim Fast keto peanut butter cup.

Alicia Vikander's trainer says she got her "Tomb Raider" physique from seven months of hard training and adhering to the keto diet.

Cannabidiol, the popular hemp plant derivative marketed as a cure-all for just about any condition, has only been approved by federal regulators to treat some rare forms of epilepsy, but its popularityquickly grew in 2019.

In April 2019, there were 6.4 million CBD Google searches, according to research in the peer-reviewed JAMA Network Open.

CBD,a non-psychoactive that shouldn't contain the"high" producing THC chemical, has poppedup on shelves across the country in oil, extract, vaporized liquid and capsule form.

The product, which as found its way into natural medicine, cosmetics and even food has caused some issues, however, due to confusion surrounding its legality.

Forget soy and almond milk, 2019 was all about oat milk for a go-tonon-dairy alternative.

Oat milk gained popularitythanks in part to the U.S. arrival of Swedish company Oatly. The company, which was formed in the early 90s,brought its oat drink to the statesstarting at Intelligentsia coffee shops last year.

Nowthe gluten-free and sugar-free product is available in upwards of 2,200 coffee shops and 1,000 grocery stores across the countryfrom Seattle to Northwest Arkansas and Brooklyn, says Oatly's general manager Mike Messersmith.

In addition to a milk-change up for yourcereal and lattes, oat milk is also coming in the form of yogurt soon.

Earlier this year, Danone North America, which sells Dannon yogurt, announced a line of oat-milk yogurt alternatives under its Silk brand.

A cross betweenpaleo and vegan diets, the Pegan diet was originally written about on functional medicine doctor Mark Hyman's blog in 2014. The doctor's buzzworthy brainchild caught on to the mainstream in 2019, however, withPinterest reporting a 337% increase in people searching for the term as of October.

"While Pegan involves leaving out certain foods like refined sugar and flour, conventionally raised animal products and chemical additives its so much more focused on what we can eat for optimal health," Hyman explained to USA TODAY partnerMakeItGrateful.com.

He continued, "Eating this way means you dont have to count calories because when you eat the whole, nutrient-dense foods, youre naturally satiated."

Most people are aware of fasting for religious reasons, but 2019 brought a whole new meaning to the practice when paired with the word "intermittent."

The trendy dieting advice suggestalternating between certain periods of eating and not eating. The methodhas been used as a way to lose weight and for other benefits. A study from The National Institute on Aging last year suggests that intermittent fasting could be the key to longevity.

Food fasting isn't the only kind to pop up this year, either.

Dopamine fasting has become a mindfulness practice that has taken off at the end of the year, about a year after Youtuber Improvement Pill published a video where he perhaps coined the term while describing his routine meant to Get Your Life Back Together, as the video title says.

The term has a different definition for everyone, but for American Authors musician Dave Rublinit means making a concerted effort, in a set amount of time, to avoid social media and TV.

Or, makea chocolate snowflake pull-apart bread wrapped in a pretty box with a big ribbon and wish your neighbors a happy holiday. Either way, you can't go wrong with making one of a kind dishes that no one will forget.

This week's influencers are inspired by holiday party feasts and gatherings. Here are five vegan recipe developers that can make these masterpieces come to life. They have a variety of options, some healthy, some not so healthy, but it's the holidays, so you deserve to treat yourself! If you're the early riser, wake up and make the cinnamon buns, the smell will excite the late sleepers!

We first found his decorative matcha donuts on Instagram and clicked around to discover more and more beautiful creations like an Oreo pie, sticky cinnamon buns, and vegan mac and cheese, all of our favorite guilty pleasures. We loved him so much we partnered with him on a weekly "What We're CookingThis Weekend,"regular feature, which provides easy-to-make recipes for weekend parties or a loved one.

J.D Raymundo is the creative chef behind The Little Almond, an Instagram and website full of mouth-watering recipes with easy to navigate ingredients and instructions. We hopped on the phone with J.D a few months ago and he told us a little bit about himself, like the fact he decided to go veganthe moment he waswaiting in line for a burger, and when he is not making and baking masterpieces he is working at a local gym as a trainer. He is wonderful to talk to and will answer your questions about living a vegan lifestyle or how to substitute specific ingredients, so send him a DM.

Lenny is a student at UCLA and in her free time makes delicious recipes for vegans like us to recreate. First of all, her images are so crisp and sharp, you'll want to eat these cinnamon buns right off your screen. Lenny creates recipes unlike any other, her purple sweet potato swirl bread looks like a work of art. Wefirst noticed Lenny for her photogenic oatmeal bowls and realized she can make kale look delicious. Try to make one of her fresh salad bowls, my favorite is the falafel bowl, which is a great source of protein.

Mairi focuses on recipes to fuel athletes, as she is a runner herself. Her health-conscious recipes usually include vegetables. And if she is cooking up a yummy dessert, she mostly uses raw ingredients. Theraw cucumber rolls are a creative way to eat more plants and get crafty about it. In addition, Mairi is a photographer, so her pictures look like they came from a glossy cookbook page.

Magda, the talent behind oatmeal_stories, is a comfort-food lover and her Instagram has over a quarter of a million followers. If you're a breakfast lover, Magda is your best guide to vegan fluffy pancakes, healthy chia seed bowls, crispy waffles, and hearty oatmeal bowls. If you're bored with your simple brown-sugar-flavored oatmeal, she will show you over 50 ways you can make oatmeal, whether it's a different topping or mixed in ingredient, like matcha powder, or almond butter, it will change the taste of the base. Magda likes to say, "another day, another oatmeal bowl".

The great vegan Christmas taste test: mains, desserts and party food – The Guardian

Meera Sodha: It needs to taste as if it were made with love. Photograph: Alecsandra Raluca Dragoi/The Guardian

Reviewed by Meera Sodha

Not long ago, anyone who wanted a plant-based Christmas dinner got little support from supermarkets. With almost everyone opting for turkey, the best you could hope for was a nut roast for one and some boiled sprouts. This year, you cant move for options which vary from meat substitutes to real vegetables, delightfully transformed.

Wherever you sit on that spectrum (personally, I prefer food from a real plant, rather than an industrial one), what is not in doubt is that, at Christmas, everything needs a little more sparkle. That sparkle can come in many forms a dish could really look the part, be made with special ingredients, such as truffle, or using a fancy technique to elevate it from the everyday but, above all, it needs to taste great and as if it were made with love.

Morrisons layered vegetable tarts, 4 for two

Puff-pastry-wrapped, barely seasoned and barely identifiable stodge that, according to the packaging, is a puree of spinach, squash and chestnuts. The mixture is perched on a layer of thick, jammy beetroot chutney so sweet that it would make a jelly baby rethink their purpose in life. Barely edible.

Tesco Finest butternut, mushroom and chestnut wreath, 4.50 (serves two)

Oven-cooked butternut squash and mushrooms tucked neatly into a filo pastry wreath. Flavour-wise, it took me straight back to the school canteen and food that was neither awful nor wonderful, but somewhere in the middle. There is not much in the way of festive flavour here no stuffing, for example, to elevate it to something special enough for Christmas. Call me Scrooge, but this is the sort of food that forms the forgettable layers in the great sandwich of life.

Tesco Finest carrot tarte tartins, 10 for four

This is a clever idea a bullet-proof tarte tartin for the home cook that falls flat. It looks pretty enough, but it is just chunky boiled carrots layered over some quite vinegar-laden onions which are not, as the packaging suggests, caramelised. The flavours are unbalanced, there is too much acid and, overall, it is one-dimensional.

Waitrose root en croute, 5.99 for two

These are pretty, golden-brown latticed pies that can sit solo, but will also play nicely alongside some Christmas trimmings. The pastry is crisp and inside is a rich and wonderful creamy, cheesy spinach sauce, which gives way to sweet paprika and dill carrots. I can spot the vegetables! There is plenty of flavour and good times to be had here. Sing it loud: root en croute!

M&S Plant Kitchen festive roast with cranberry and chestnut stuffing and a vegan gravy, 12 (serves 4); in store from 20 December

Glory be! What a delicious thing this was over and over again: my husband and I could not stop eating it. Given that the nut roast has been relegated to the foods of Christmas past, I applaud the cooks at M&S who bravely brought it back in 2019, updated with a merriness of flavour and texture. This is herby, rich and sausage-y with notes of chestnut, spice and a naughty smattering of cranberry stuffing in the centre, plus a vegan gravy so good I swear I heard angels singing as it slipped down. It does look like a big, fat brown log, but who cares? Id be prepared to take out my contact lenses just to eat it all over again. Pure joy.

Aldi root vegetable and cranberry sauce pastry crowns topped with pumpkin seeds, 2.99 for two

Horrifyingly sweet. The sugar laced in the onions that top the crown was enough to make my teeth crawl up inside my gums and beg for it all to stop. Underneath the sweet onions was another layer of gloopy, sweet cranberry sauce and the odd (sweet) vegetable parsnip, carrot or beetroot. Overall this is confused: pudding masquerading as a main.

Co-op festive roasting joints, 5 (serves two)

The glowing fake bacon, artfully wrapped around the side of what looks like a circular slab of half-digested stomach contents (sorry) was enough to kill my festive spirit, but I took a hit and ate some. The bacon tasted like flabby, spammy Frazzles and the insides were an oily smoked mixture of sweet rice and herbs. I managed only a couple of bites. It is the vegan Grinch roast that stole Christmas.

Sainsburys Taste the Difference no beef wellington, 7 (serves two)

This parcel-shaped pastry, to its credit, looks like something you would want to bring to table. It suggests to the vegans that they are loved and cared-for members of the family. Until, as in a good thriller, a knife appears and things start to go wrong. When cut, the insides are like the sludgy brown bottom of the Thames, gushing out on to the plate, encouraging the central no-beef sausage to lurch forward. Despite all the drama, it tastes quite nice like smoky mushroom pate wrapped in pastry. I would not complain if I were served it but I might hope for something better next year.

Reviewed by Anna Jones

There is a lightness to a vegan dessert that I really appreciate. While I love cream and butter, it is not what I crave at the end of a big meal. So even if I have the choice, I will often plump for the vegan pudding in a restaurant, because it will be the thing on the menu that pops out.

That said, you want a certain level of indulgence creaminess without a cloying texture; a jelly that has the right level of wobble. And texture is crucial; a topping of demerara sugar or pumpkin-seed brittle, say, scattered over a ginger cake.

Asda Extra Special raspberry torte, 4 (serves six)

This is lovely in appearance, with a good dusting of cocoa. But for something billed as extra-special, it really could have tasted more chocolatey. It has a nut base, which adds a nice bit of texture, but it is just not indulgent enough.

Iceland No Moo chocolate snow flakes, 2 for two

These are pretty small halfway between a chocolate and a cake. The hard chocolate exterior gives way to a very liquid caramel filling that is much too sweet.

M&S chocolate and cherry dessert, 10 (serves six)

The only way to serve this, it appears, is to spoon it out of its plastic container like a mousse, which is a pity, since it looks like a layered cake. The cherry topping is reminiscent of a pie filling, not too sweet, with pieces of fruit. The chocolate ganache beneath is a tiny bit grainy, but with a lovely strong chocolate flavour.

Tesco Finest chocolate ganache and brownie bites, 4 for six

These look quite sweet and Christmassy, with gold dusting on the top, and they are not too big, which is always good because it means you can have a bite of something else, too. You get a big chocolate hit at the beginning, and a cleaner, fresher flavour because they are dairy-free at the end. They have a slight tiffin vibe, with dates for sweetness and pumpkin seeds for bite.

Waitrose elderflower, raspberry and blackcurrant jelly, 4 (serves 6)

This looked so beautiful when it first came out of its tub and would have been marked higher if it hadnt collapsed almost instantly. The jelly has a good, soft consistency, which is hard for vegan jellies. Nice sharpness from the fruit, although I would prefer more elderflower.

Sainsburys raspberry and clementine snowflake jelly, 4 (serves four)

This is pretty amazing-looking a fancy gold star that holds its shape beautifully. I can imagine people being impressed with this one. But it all tastes a bit too much like orange squash or the middle layer of a packet jelly trifle.

Party food has to look appetising. You dont want to feel embarrassed handing out platters.

Co-op Asian style sharing selection, 2.25 for 11 pieces

It looks tasty. I like the stars on the vegetable twists, and the filo candles with their festive red tips. It tastes fresh and fragrant with lemongrass; nothing greasy and, crucially, no soggy pastry.

Co-op Indian style sharing selection, 2.25 for 10 pieces

These are golden brown and crunchy. The curried jackfruit in the samosas is intense. Delicious.

Tesco sticky chilli cauliflower bites, 2 (serves four)

Reheating tempura batter in the oven doesnt really work, especially since you are putting the sauce on it, which makes the pastry bland and soggy. Depressing.

Tesco Plant Chef pigless blankets, 2 for 10

These take an age to golden-up, but they are worth the wait. The pastry is flaky and the filling (pea protein and roasted mushroom) is better than the real deal.

Tesco Finest Thai inspired butternut squash, coconut and lime spring rolls, 4 for eight

The prettiest of the lot, and the flavour is excellent, too: the taste is like Thai green curry, with a powerful lemongrass flavour.

Asda Extra Special rainbow vegetable filo tarts, 2.50 for nine

I like the fact that the veggies are on show here, and not enclosed in pastry it is refreshing for them not to be beige. Flavour-wise, the gooey filling contrasts nicely with the crispy filo. More lemongrass, though definitely the ingredient of the moment.

M&S Collection mushroom steamed buns, 14 for 24

These look interesting and mysterious and, as long as you dont taste them, they will be a talking point. But the pastry tastes like doughy, cheap white breadcrumbs you have smashed into a ball. And if you closed your eyes, you wouldnt even know there was a filling in there.

M&S Plant Kitchen no pork pigs in duvets, 5 for 12

The pastry is doughy, and while the sausage looks decent, it doesnt taste like one. It is made with seasoned mushroom and soy, but tastes a bit like cheese. It is definitely savoury, though almost too savoury and it gets better with every bite.

Iceland no duck Chinese selection, 3 for 12 pieces

The sweet plum gyoza with jackfruit taste vaguely authentic, although the tartness of the plum is a bit overpowering. Otherwise, they are a bit bland. I dont like the hoisin pastry cones, which taste like stale, stodgy curry wrapped in soggy pastry. If they sold the Sichuan filo crackers separately, though, I might buy them but they dont redeem the whole pack.

Iceland No Bull Burger Sliders, 4 for eight

This is fun finger food. The sliders look great and taste great, as if fresh off the barbecue. I like the fact that they come with mustard, and that the burger is a very close replica of a beef burger. To the untrained palate, they taste like beef.

Iceland no duck hoisin spring rolls, 2 for 10

Very run-of-the-mill spring rolls, the kind you get at an all-you-can-eat buffet. The pastry is a bit tough and thick, most likely to compensate for skimping on the filling.

Aldi vegan cauliflower bites, 1.99 for 10

They have an offputting watery consistency, a bit like curdled milk. And the flavour is unidentifiable. Asian? Indian? Tex Mex? British? No good.

Waitrose Christmas vegan mini beet wellingtons, 7 for nine

There is no food with red crumbs on the outside except for red velvet cake, so the white puff pastry dotted with red here is immediately unappetising. Also, they look difficult to eat. Taste-wise I dont like them. They are so sweet that they are almost like a dessert but not a wellington.

Waitrose vegan Moroccan mushroom and chickpea pittas, 6 for 12

They are so cute! They certainly look one of the most interesting offerings. They taste nice, too, with a bit of Moroccan tagine vibe. But that is only in the first mouthful. After that, they get drier and drier, and in the end it is just thick pitta.

Waitrose Christmas vegan mushroom and chestnut pat, 2.50

This looks good, with a lovely glossy finish from the red onion and balsamic chutney on top, but the bottom layer is so bland that caramelised onion is all you get by way of flavour. This neither tastes like, nor does the job of, a pat. It is a condiment, not a snack.
