Teen arrested at Florida Starbucks while protesting extra charges for vegan milk options – NBC 6 South Florida

A 13-year-old boy was arrested during a PETA protest over vegan milk options at a Starbucks store in Orange County.

PETA claims the boy and his family were part of a group peacefully protesting the coffee chain over extra charges for vegan milk options.

The store's management and Orange County Sheriff's deputies ordered the protesters to leave, but the teen reportedly refused to do so.

Video released by PETA shows the teen appearing to throw something at a deputy as he was taken into custody. Cameras captured him being shoved onto a table and handcuffed.

The boy is now charged with battery on a law enforcement officer. His mother and her boyfriend are facing misdemeanor trespassing charges.

Deputies told Fox 35 the boy was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and trespassing after a warning. The boys mother, Shannon Blair, and her boyfriend, Wesley Hucker, also allegedly trespassed after a warning and Hucker was also arrested.

About 15 people protested in the store, located at16065 New Independence Parkway,seen in a video shared with Orlando Weekly by PETA. Protesters are seen holding various signs, such as one that read "Starbucks: Stop Vegan Upcharge." Starbucks called the sheriff's office to have the protesters removed after they refused to leave the store.

The videoshows the boy being restrained by a deputy and allegedly shoving into him, which led to a drink being spilled on both of them. The officer is then seen pushing the boy onto a table and putting him into handcuffs. Throughout the video, the boys mother is heard repeating, Dont touch my child Oh my god, oh my god, and What are you doing to my child?"

In a press release, PETA wrote that the sit-in was held by supporters of the animal rights organization.

Despite publicly admitting that dairy is the biggest contributor to its carbon footprint and acknowledging the positive impact that dairy-free milk options have in furthering its environmental goals, Starbucks continues to charge as much as 90 cents more for them, lagging far behind its many competitors that offer vegan milk at no additional charge, PETA wrote.

The boy is still in police custody and Hucker is being held at an adult facility. Blair is trying to secure her sons release, according to PETA.

I am new to Wahkiakum County and, like many here, appreciate the natural beauty of the area. In September, when I first arrived last year, the trees, birds in flight and peaceful cows all contributed to a scene which, at first, seemed retirement-worthy. Within a few weeks, though, the sounds of gunfire shattered the peace. I was told that October was hunting season and that it would calm down soon. And yet, even during the holiday season, that gunfire continued. I would support making Puget Island a safe zone for non-hunters throughout the year.

Then, last week I came to town for an interview. A group of men, all smiles and waving, were standing in a tent in front of the market and people were happily walking out of the store with huge, plastic-wrapped packages of what were, perhaps, the remains of the peaceful cows that graced my neighborhood until, they mysteriously disappeared. My dog, who was very happy when we first arrived, has become serious lately. Perhaps concerned for the welfare of her new friends.

For a short period of time, as a child, my sister and I lived on a farm with animals. In response to that experience, we both converted to veganism as adults who make our own decisions about what we put on our tables and into our bodies. I know there are other vegan people in our community because I see some certified vegan products in our market. Veganism is a healthy alternative, when done properly, which can bring greater health and immunity to people and many studies have shown this to be true.

We no longer need animal products to live and thrive. Furthermore, animal farming has a larger carbon footprint than botanical farming, and governments are concerned about greenhouse gases. What would it take to retrain our farmers, and our creamery, to convert to vegan farming and products? Are there government retraining programs and grants that could be put into practice? Im told that potatoes are one of the newer vegan dairy alternatives and, as deadly nightshades, are deer resistant.

Vegan Deli & Butcher's Italian cold cut sandwich features chef Chris Bertke's riff on ham, turkey, pepperoni and provolone on a hoagie.

Chris Bertke has a tendency to look frazzled, but if you watch him at work in his new open kitchen on the high-trafficked crook of Morgan Ford and Gravois, there's a grace and calm about him. He's delicate with his herbs, he slices his subs and breads gently. He moves about behind the counter like Mister Rogers at his puppets. If it weren't for the punk rock on the stereo, you might think to roll out a sleeping bag and a doobie.

There's a black transfer on the wall as you walk in: a silhouette of a pig wielding a cleaver, two humans cowering in fear. You get the point and you are glad to be here. For all the menace of the illustration, Vegan Deli & Butcher (5003 Gravois Avenue) feels like a safe place to be. Everything is OK on this corner; no harm's being done.

I'm good with that. And because I do believe in a future where my brain isn't woefully compartmentalized when it comes to eating animals, and my stomach doesn't believe their products are essential for life, I'm bringing out the band for Bertke. In his actual world, vegan food is the first choice because, the way he makes it, it can be insanely good. With him in the kitchen, that world feels possible; the future feels like it's here.

But this is the thing I always wonder: Is the principal goal to outfox the rapacious carnivore or simply coax them to the gentler side with toothsome, meat-mimicking soy and wheat products? (He happens to do both). And then, on the other hand, what do vegans think when they bite down on a "short rib" bnh m and its meatily threaded, perfectly stringed and has exactly the right chew? Is this like despising cake but loving cakey? Hating green, but wearing the vest because it looks so good with those mustard pants? Oh, whatevs. Compartments again.

And it doesn't matter right now. We are here, surely, to talk about taste, about satisfaction, regardless of how it's produced. And Bertke is a wizard.

He was a wizard before, when he headed the kitchen at Utah Station and people couldn't get enough of his Crack Tacos, and he may in his very own brick-and-mortar, which opened in November be more of one now. For instance, with a wand and a waft of sea kelp, his cured carrots become lox. By working his magic on soy protein, his beef has just the right bounce. For example, if not for the wimpy jalapeos, that aforementioned bnh m a special the day we went was impressive. Bound tight in parchment with daikon, carrot and a delicious woodsy smear of mushroom pate, it was pretty darn close to Mai Lee's. (Those weedy jalapeos could be hotter.)

Even he seemed surprised by the result.

"Yeah, wasn't that nuts?" he says, and goes on to talk about the process: "I began with a soy and wheat base. I made a blob, added oil for richness, braised it, let it sit, gave it an oil and spice bath ..."

That's when I ask if he has a background in chemistry.

"No," he says. "I like to drink and, late night, the fucked-up ideas come."

While Utah Station had a fast-food bent, Bertke's latest venture riffs on an East Coast deli. So, yes, there are bagels and lox (the bagels come weekly from New York); yes, there are cold cuts tucked into buns with cheeses and pickly peppers; and yes you heard it right there's a Maine "lobster" roll. It's kind of a beauty. Actually it's two rolls two buns a-bulge with a juicy amalgam of jackfruit, hearts of palm (clever), celery, onion and a faintly sweet Thousand Island mayo.

Bertke keeps some of his tricks up his sleeve. He will only say that his cream cheese materializes from a secret whip of tofu and coconut oil, and that most of his meats have something to do with seitan treated in unusual ways.

"I have no recipe books," he said. "And I don't read."

The shop is clean and bright.

It's a small shop, but clean and bright. Two high-tops, a few benches, an exposed brick wall. Fans of Bertke's to-go-only frozen pizza will be pleased to see the packed stand-up freezer. It's a pizza version of a DMV number dispenser; almost everyone seems to take one (although, in this case, no one looks grim).

It's easier to do pizza tricks in St. Louis, where Provel isn't an oddity but the thing. Don't know how many decades it's been since my lone taste of that processed cheese product, but from memory, at least, I couldn't tell the difference from the vegan version. Had Bertke's way, I liked it. I wasn't as worried about the cheesy, liquidy slick. Nor was I worried about the circular 'kerchiefs of salami, the knots of herby sausage. And afterward, once I'd scarfed seven-eighths of a Spicy Italian and still felt spry, I asked myself: Is the "real thing" really worth it?

The clientele at Vegan Deli & Butcher is interesting. For every ear gauge, there's a silvery head. But the day I went, Gen Xers (if that's what I "untechnically" am) were in short supply. By appearances, on that day at least, my generation which should know better doesn't. Except for Bertke, who hasn't eaten meat in 30 years.

The Reuben is topped with faux corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing on rye bread.

Later that day, after my initial visit to Bertke's green kingdom, I told my son, who has been mainlining meat since he was two, that there was half a Reuben in the fridge. As he opened the door and reached in, my poker face was mint expressionless, a little bit bored.

It's a fat hunk of a sandwich, but tender: lovely, fresh marble rye (picked up each morning from Marconi Bakery on the Hill) clasping a juicy, saucy bundle of junipery corned beef, vinegary kraut and a rosy Thousand Island dressing.

"Dang, Mum," he said, biting in. "This kicks."

I didn't say a word.

It is no secret that Jason Momoa has been a fan of Guinness for some time and now, he has found a creative way to show the world just how much he loves this vegan beer. The Dublin-based beer company just released a new commercial, produced by Momoas company On the Roam.

The ad, which Momoa also directed, kicks off with Aquaman (the superhero he plays in the 2018 action film) finding out that he is two-percent Irish and dashing offthrough a crowded restaurant, street, and trafficto celebrate the discovery with a fresh pint.

The ad is a celebration of Momoas heritage (which on his mothers side is native Hawaiian and Samoan and on his fathers side is Irish, German, and Native American). In fact, the commercial was a family affair.

My whole company is in it, we produced it, I co-directed it with my best friend, and then I wrote it with another best friend. My moms in it, Momoa told The Hollywood Reporter. It abso-f*cking-lutely is my dream job.

The partnership between Momoa and Guinness, his favorite post-workout drink, has been brewing for a decade. The 44-year-old Game of Thrones star visited the Dublin brewery multiple times and was even presented with his own imprint of the beer, the Mano Brew.

There are many reasons to love Momoas favorite beer, a major one of which is that it is no longer made with animal products.

In 2017, Guinness announced a pivotal shift in its production process, marking a significant milestone for vegan beer enthusiasts. The brand decided to eliminate isinglass, a fish bladder derivative traditionally used for yeast filtration, from its brewing process. This move was in response to growing consumer demand for more ethical and inclusive beverage options.

The brewery is delighted to confirm that this phase of the project is complete and all Guinness Draught produced in keg format at St. James Gate Brewery and served in pubs, bars, and restaurants around the world, is brewed without using isinglass to filter the beer, a spokeswoman for Guinness said in a statement at the time.

Led by Guinnesss parent company Diageo, this transition set a new industry standard for large commercial brewers looking to enhance their sustainability and animal welfare practices.

This change has not affected the quality of Guinness, a beer that is about celebration and communityas captured by Momoa in the new commercial.

For Momoa, drinking Guinnesswhich is lighter bodied and lower in calories and alcohol content than other beersis less about getting tipsy and more about forming connections at local pubs.

To me, Guinness is like wine or sake, Momoa said. It has its own place. Its not beer, its Guinness.

Beyond his affinity for Guinness, Momoa is an avid environmentalist. In a notable 2019 speech at the United Nations, he represented the plight of island nations against the environmental degradation caused by industrialized countries, declaring, We are a disease that is infecting our planet We must initiate change now.

His commitment to sustainability is also evident in his establishment of Manalau, a water brand favoring aluminum cans over plastic bottles, further highlighted by a viral moment in 2019 when he shaved his beard to protest against plastic pollution.

In 2021, he also teamed up with the climbing gear company So iLL to introduce a line of vegan sneakers. The collaboration, named the iLL x On The Roam Collection, featured sneakers crafted from eco-conscious materials including organic cotton, a cork layer, and soles that naturally break down over time. These shoes incorporate insoles made by Bloom Foam, which repurposes harmful algae into eco-friendly material.

Momoa is also the co-founder of Bozeman, MT-based spirits company Meili Vodka, which holds itself to a higher standard of sustainability. The company uniquely integrates the natural elements of fire, water, earth, and air into its distillation process, emphasizing eco-friendly practices. Its bottles are made from post-consumer recycled glass, directly addressing the issue of waste.

Utilizing an ancient aquifer for its water source, Meili ensures the purity and taste of its vodka while maintaining environmental integrity. The grain used is sourced from local farms, minimizing the carbon footprint and supporting local agriculture. Finally, Meilis commitment to sustainability extends to its production methods, focusing on reducing energy consumption and promoting regenerative practices.

This Earth Day (April 22), Momoa will continue his fight for the planet on the big screen with the release of new documentary Common Ground. The film, directed by Josh and Rebecca Tickell, features a compelling lineup of environmental advocates, including Momoa, Laura Dern, Ian Somerhalder, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson, and Donald Glover.

This sequel to Kiss the Ground further explores the urgent need for a shift away from industrialized farming methods to combat climate change, restore biodiversity, and revitalize ecosystems.

Currently, Momoa is in New Zealand filming the forthcoming comedic film Minecraftalongside Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, and Danielle Brookswhich is slated for release in April 2025.

Eleven Madison Park’s Daniel Humm is bringing a one-night-only vegan menu to Crown Shy – Time Out

Chef James Kent is on a culinary marathon at Michelin-starred Crown Shy. One of NYCs 50 Best restaurants, the lovely, sprawling spot first opened in 2019the best premiere of that year. For the last few months, Kent, who rose to renown in his earlierrole as chef de cuisine at Eleven Madison Park, has been hosting guest chefs some nights at Crown Shy.

Dubbed Carbo-Load at Crown Shy, industry pros bring their own menus to Kents acclaimed kitchen, followed by a morning sprint with the Crown High Run Club, with the visiting chef, the Crown Shy team, and any of the previous evenings guests who are up for a trot. The titles cheeky: carbs may or may not be in abundance. And, although Kents a marathoner, the runs just meant to be fun.

Over the last 20 years, I've had the pleasure to travel the world, cooking in kitchens in Mexico City and Bangkok and Mumbai, Kent says via email. Im grateful to be able to host a handful of my friends for this series. And even more grateful that I've convinced them to run with us. Some required more convincing than others.

On Monday, March 25, Kent will reunite with EMPs own acclaimed chef-owner Daniel Humm. Kent and Humm, who made waves when he made that fine dining destination plant-based in 2021, will author Crown Shys very first fully vegan menu for the occasion.

Weve slowly but surely introduced more plant-based items to the menu at Crown Shy, but . . . as supportive as I am of Daniel's plant evangelism, I had not planned to forego meat entirely at Crown Shy, Kent says.

The chefs were last formally partnered when Kent moved from EMP to lead The Nomad, another Humm venture, until 2017, though Kent popped back up in EMPs alumni series last fall. The reunion has been just like that other popular cardiovascular activity.

I spent the formative years of my career working with Daniel in the kitchen at Eleven Madison Park, Kent says, So we have a shorthand. We've been sending menu ideas back and forth for a couple of weeks. Because of the time I spent at EMP, I also have the benefit of knowing the cooks who still work with Daniel and will be supporting him at the event. that makes the logistical bit significantly easier.

March 25 will also be the first time Humm has appeared at Crown Shy in a professional capacity.

I'm excited to have Daniel in my house for once, Kent says. I think that his team will get a kick out of someone being able to give Daniel shit.

As the first wave of storms from a major atmospheric river rolled into sunny Southern California in early February, Kevin Tran knew he'd be staying late the following evening after heavy winds and rainfall were expected to hit his Reseda restaurant.

The Sherman Way strip-mall location was likely to be safe from flooding it's just that Kevin knows he has to stay about 90 minutes later than usual when it rains because for his customers, it's gonna be a soup day.

His wife and business partner Lynne tells me it takes 18 hours for the spices to come together to make their pho and lemongrass broths.

Rainy days means that they almost nearly sell out. So they have to start the overnight process again to up their reserves for the following days.

Kevin is keenly aware of his customers needs and ordering habits.

Nobody wants salad on a rainy day, and nobody is eating soup on a very hot day except for one customer." Kevin pauses for a moment.

"Victor. He's been coming to Vinh Loi for 18 years, only eats soup, even in the scorching 110-degree weather."

Vinh Loi is a star of the vegan scene in L.A. When Kevin and Lynne opened their business in 2002, they exclusively made tofu in the space, but since have branched out to offer everything from banh mi sandwiches to duck noodle salads and a curry udon stir fry. Kevin calls his cuisine "strictly Vietnamese food, but my style.

Vinh Loi is a casual cafe. No reservations necessary. The orange and green walls display large photos of the menu items. News clippings, accolades, and recognitions from the City of Los Angeles and the California State Senate are hanging on the walls. You sit down wherever you choose, but your order is at the discretion of the chef.

The night that I come in, Kevin is wearing a t-shirt that says "I pick, you eat."

He asks me: "Brother have you eaten? are you hungry?"

Sure.

How spicy?"

Medium.

How hungry?

Medium.

He looks me up and down and says, "OK, I'll pick the food."

There are more than 300 items on the menu. But the food changes every two weeks theres something new and different.

Kevin walks into the kitchen and brings out the meal he has picked for me mock crispy duck on top of rice and noodles with vegetables. The duck is made from wheat gluten, seitan. Its delicious.

Kevin and Lynnes tofu-making journey began after Kevin's grandma passed away. Their family observed a traditional 49-day Vietnamese Buddhist grieving process, which includes abstaining from meat.

During this time they were driving all over L.A. and Orange County, trying tofu from many different places. "We were tasting tofu everywhere." Lynne says. Some hits and misses, but they realized their best tofu was made in the traditional way.

Kevin said to his wife, I love tofu, honey, maybe we should open a factory?

At the time Kevin had been selling high-end furniture in the South Bay and Lynne was working in the film industry. Kevin says he sold furniture to pay student loans, but food is my passion.

Lynne says it wasn't easy. We make tofu in the traditional old-school way. The tofu making process is very tedious and time consuming.

It starts with soaking the soy beans overnight, then coming back the following morning at 5 a.m. and brining it. Once ready, it has to be cooked, and then water is added back to it. Then add whatever seasonings like their tofu block with lemon grass. We sold it with different flavors like: plain tofu, tofu lemongrass, tofu with mushroom."

Reseda is home to a vibrant Vietnamese community, with markets, restaurants, bakeries, restaurants, doctors, accountant, notary publics, and a Buddhist temple. So it made sense to Kevin and Lynne to open Vinh Loi Tofu there.

They had been making tofu for a year and a half when one day a customer came in and asked Kevin what he was eating.

It looked good. It was his vegan version of Bun Bo Hue, a traditional Vietnamese spicy beef soup.

After that people began to ask to taste other things on the menu. "What do you mean menu? I serve tofu, says Kevin. Slowly one thing after another and the menu becomes massive. I love to create. I love to cook. I love to eat. I wanted to do something for my customers.

Kevin points to a 2009 L.A. Times article and photo gallery, which used to be on the wall but it's now ostensibly out of sight on top of a fridge.

People started coming here since the article. A year later, the Discovery Channel came through and basically gave me a year of free advertising. Since then Kevin says it's been up and up.

"We've been very fortunate, Lynne says, for the majority of our customers it's their lifestyle. It's not a trend or a fad.

Lynne describes a multigenerational clientele. There's beauty in a restaurant. We get to know families by name. Lot of them come in once as a date, and then later as a couple, and then later with their children.

There are a lot of people in the vegan community, but nowadays even meat-eaters want to taste, says Kevin. In people's minds a block of tofu has no taste. But the minute they taste this food, they realize they can be vegan every day.

Lynne says were a strong believer in morals and values. I'm always sourcing the freshest produce. Putting our name on a product, and making sure you deliver. Focus on quality over quantity."

Kevin says "my job is to make sure that the food tastes real and healthy. You have to put your heart and soul, 110% into a restaurant."

Though Lynne says that Kevin can also be the vegan version of Gordon Ramsay a real pain in the ass.

Kevin admits it. Trust me I own my restaurant, I'm picky. I love food so much. It can't be a 9, it needs to be a 10. If the cooks palette is off, itll be wrong for the customer.

His zeal for perfection has led Kevin to other activities like triathlons. He says cooking is my hobby running is for when I need a change.

He competes as the Tofu Robot, a name given to him by a customer because he does things that only robots can do. Humans can't do it."

Kevin says he got into these massive multi-day 100-mile races because "I hung out with too many vegans, all badasses, looking good. I kinda wanted to understand my customers.

He says he runs because "I need to know what is in people's minds. They're crazy. I have to learn from what they did. See how vegan food works on the body in those conditions."

I feel like whatever I do. I am happy. Animal is happy. People are happy because they had healthy food to eat. And making people happy makes me happy at the same time. You have nothing to lose. Everybody win/win.
