The Very Good Food Company (VGF)parent company of Canadian vegan brand The Very Good Butchers (VGB)saw an 800 percent increase in its stock value after its first few days of trading on the Canadian Securities Exchange (CSE). On June 16, VGF completed its initial public offering (IPO) of 16,100,000 common shares at the price of CAD$0.25 per sharewhich resulted in gross proceeds of approximately CAD$4,025,000and began trading on the open market under ticker VERY on June 18.

Founded by couple James Davison and Tania Friesen in 2016, VGB initially sold its vegan meats and cheeses at local farmers markets before opening a storefront on Canadas west coast in Victoria, BC in 2017which, within four months, grew into a larger location at the Victoria Public Market. The shop features menu items made with VGBs housemade vegan meats and cheeses such as burgers, subs, mac and cheese, and loaded fries. The companys vegan meats are also now available at retailers across Canada and as part of a subscription butcher box.

This week, new Canadian investment firm Eat Beyond Global Holdingswhich focuses on funding the growth of the alternative food sectorannounced that its first investment was in VGF, stocks of which it purchased at the common share price last week. We are thrilled to see The Very Good Food Company, another major plant-based IPO, mirroring the success of Beyond Meat. There is clearly extraordinary confidence in this market, and enormous demand for plant-based products, Eat Beyond CEO Patrick Morris said. We are excited to continue investing in this growing sector and continuing to be a part of more success stories like this one.

AMPED UP: Veganism a healthy eating option – 13WMAZ.com

Posted: at 4:48 am

It's time to get Amped Up, and we're talking healthy ways of eating. We're exploring veganism with Letoiya Jones.

MACON, Ga. I want people to know that vegan food is not just rabbit food or just salads, says self-proclaimed vegan Letoiya Jones.

Jones has been a practicing vegan for the past four years. She decided to try the lifestyle after having issues digesting food including meat and fish, and she says the changes shes made in the kitchen have paid off and the transition was pretty easy.

Jones says, I had mentally been preparing myself for months, so once I decided to do it, I was OK, and when I did it four years ago, there werent as many substitutions like they have now. I still eat vegan junk, but mainly, I eat fruits and vegetables.

Processed vegan foods like Oreo cookies are Jones' favorite, but as a true vegan, that means she doesnt eat any animal flesh or byproducts like milk, cheese, or eggs, so shes decided to take things into her own hands -- literally, creating delicious and nutritious meals via her business, Southern Garden Kitchen.

Im excited about continuing to cook and continuing to change the stigma of veganism that everything is so restricted, explains Jones. I like to think of it as, 'Think of what you can eat and not what you cant eat,' and its a lifestyle and not a diet. It's truly a lifestyle, so I look forward to changing peoples minds.

Jones says her new way of eating gives her more energy and has helped her lose more than 100 pounds along her journey. If youre interested in giving veganism a try,hop on over to Facebook and check out Southern Garden Kitchen with Letoiya Jones to get you started.

These Vegan Frozen Snickers Bars Are Filled With Nougat and Caramel – LIVEKINDLY

Posted: at 4:48 am

Snickers lovers rejoice! You can now make ooey-gooey, vegan frozen Snickers bars filled with nougat and caramel and coated in chocolate!

I actually love the taste of brown rice syrup, but you wont find it in my recipes very often. The main reason for this is because it is very sticky. And so I find it a little difficult to work with. I tend to reach out for maple syrup most of the time as its a lot smoother and works well in most desserts. Brown rice syrup is excellent if trying to create a sticky caramel type texture. So it works really well for these bars. I am going to start using it more often in the future because it has a beautiful flavor.

For the healthier eaters, keep in mind, this recipe is very high in fat. I was afraid it would be too heavy and would make me nauseous but it was actually delicious! I was very impressed with how it turned out. The only thing I did wrong was that I was too lazy to coat the bars in chocolate properly. I was in a rush and tried to pour the chocolate on top instead. Please do not ever do this! They turned out looking like monsters. I photographed the only two bars that didnt look like giant poops. I just hate dipping in chocolate though! Its so messy and time-consuming. I havent found chocolate dipping techniques I am happy with but I will persevere.

The recipe is vegan, fructose-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free. Enjoy!

Craving more delectable desserts like my vegan Snickers bars? Then try making my vegan chocolate fudge with goji berries and roasted almonds recipe! The recipe only calls for a handful of ingredients, two of which are superfoods! These include cashews, cacao powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cacao butter, roasted almonds, and goji berries, of course.

Or try making my decadent vegan peach galette with puff pastry and raspberries. It can be whipped up in under 40 minutes. The recipe features a delicious filling that I created with only four ingredients: peaches, coconut sugar, vanilla extract, and fresh raspberries.

World-class winner: Vegan wine list at The Acre honored with prestigious award – Albuquerque Journal

Posted: at 4:48 am

.......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... ..........

Putting together an all-vegan wine list was challenging for Shawn Weed, but his effort paid off.

Weed, who is the wine director and owner of The Acre restaurant, worked with sommelier Gabriel Ballantine to develop the list, which recently received a Wine Spectator Restaurant Award.

(Ballantine ) took interest in what I was doing and said, Hey, let me see if I can learn about this with you and we can work together, and he was tremendous help, Weed said. We just kept hitting the ground and seeing what we can find, and this year around New Years we had a pretty darn good selection.

ADVERTISEMENTSkip

................................................................

Weed submitted The Acres impressive vegan wine list to Wine Spectator, a magazine that focuses on wine and wine culture. Wine Spectators Restaurant Awards recognize restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections, are appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers, according to its website.

Im pretty proud of it, and Im still in a little bit of shock that we won a national award for this, Weed said. In the whole world, as of last year, there were only seven restaurants in the world that got wine awards that were either vegetarian or vegan. Thats also why I was, like, I dont think I stand a chance. Some of these restaurants are in Europe and really amazing places, and to think a little restaurant of 48 seats in New Mexico could get an award like that is pretty, like, holy cow to me. I dont really have very eloquent words to express how it feels, but its pretty awesome.

Offering vegan wines at reasonable prices was taken into consideration.

More than half of our wines are what I would consider very affordable, Weed said. I mean 80% are less than about $50. If you go to a nice restaurant, youre going to pay $10 for a glass of decent wine. You know, here, we are passing that same thing forward. It should also match what we do at The Acre, which is making things accessible and affordable, whether its our food or our wine

It was important to Weed to allow diners vegan wine options, because The Acre caters to those with vegan and vegetarian diets.

Weve ended up getting some wines in there that are super-sparse, like we have a K Vintners (The Hidden Syrah), which got 99 points, Weed said. Its the most expensive wine on our list, but to know there are vegan wines that are getting above 99 points is just incredible. It goes along with what we do in the community for vegetarians and vegans, but also I think its just something that people should be allowed to make their own choices about.

It may not be widely known that animal product are used in the production of most wines.

I think the general population doesnt know that there are animal products in wine. I think that really shocks people, Weed said. I know when I first found out about it, I was just kind of floored that they would do it that way. And now that I own the restaurant, its become a passion of mine to sort of publicize the fact that there are winemakers out there that are fantastic that are doing this in a vegan, responsible way, animal cruelty-free way.

Weed said animal product, such as fish bladders or egg whites, are added to remove cloudiness in wine.

The process of making cloudy wine not cloudy is called fining, Weed explained. When you do fining, basically youre adding something to it thats going to pull all those tiny particulates to it so that you can basically scoop it out or separate it, and then you have this perfectly crystal-clear product.

Many vegan wine makers use clay to clear the cloudiness.

One of the other common ways they can do it that does make it vegan is by using clay deposits, and I believe the word is bentonite clay, and thats the most common vegan way to do it, Weed said. Its basically minerals to extract that clout, and it doesnt change the flavor, either, and so I think its a more responsible way. Since youre not losing any flavor or gaining any flavor, I think is the better way to do it.

The Best Vegan Popular Food Products To Keep In Your Fridge – The Manual

Posted: at 4:48 am

without comments

Back to Menu

Its quickly becoming common knowledge that one of the best ways to reduce your environmental impact and live a more sustainable life is to reduce or cut out your meat consumption. There are a number of ways the meat industry negatively affects the environment: Immense water usage, greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation the list goes on and on. And many people are increasingly unwilling to support an industry that treats animals in such cruel, inhumane ways. Based on this, interest in veganism is on the rise. Even if committing 100% to veganism isnt on the table, theres been a rapid growth in high-quality vegan food products in recent years, recreating popular dishes like pizzas and burgers with vegan-friendly ingredients, showing that you can literally have your delicious vegan cake and eat it, too. Reducing meat consumption and replacing popular dishes with plant-based options is a great stepping stone to living a more sustainable, healthy life, for you and the planet, and these are the best vegan popular food products you should make sure to stock your fridge with.

One of the biggest conundrums for non-vegans considering a switch is eggs: So many recipes require them, so many delicious dishes are egg-based, and yet vegans dont eat eggs due to the exploitative nature in which mass-market eggs are produced. Well, JUST Egg has stepped up to fill that egg-shaped void in your fridge. The brands vegan eggs are made from 100% plant-based proteins like mung beans, as well as other vegetables and seasonings like turmeric and carrots to add flavor and natural coloring. Available as a liquid for scrambled eggs or as a folded patty thats perfect for breakfast sandwiches, the taste and texture are pretty darn close to the real thing, feeling and tasting like actual eggs. And when combined with other ingredients for omelets, sandwiches, and other recipes, JUST Eggs proves that it really can fill that egg-shaped hole, in terms of utility, flavor, and enjoyment. And, since JUST Eggs is cholesterol-free, its also great for non-vegans looking to cut their cholesterol intake.

One of the first companies to wake the general public up to the fact that vegan replacements of their favorite meals could actually be good or even better than the real thing, Beyond Meat has continued growing and making an impact since its launch in 2009. The LA-based company focuses on creating vegan-meat products like burger patties, sausages, ground beef, and more, using plant-based protein, fat, minerals, carbohydrates, and water to make their faux-meats. Their proteins consist of mung beans, fava beans, peas, and brown rice; fats are sourced from the likes of coconut oil, cocoa butter, and canola oil; minerals like salt, iron, calcium, and potassium chloride are added; and then extracts of beet and apple juice and natural flavors re-create that meaty taste and look we love so much. It all comes together to create the ultimate vegan-friendly meat products.

In veganism, milk is a no-go. Almond milk is insanely bad for the environment. And does anyone actually like soy milk? So oak milk is up to bat as the next vegan-friendly dairy alternative and it looks like its gonna be around for a while. For one thing, it actually tastes good; silky, flavorful, balanced, and robust. And for another, its much better for the environment, requiring much less water to make than almond milk and producing fewer greenhouse gases during its production process. There are many oat milk brands out there, but Oatly is consistently touted as the best of the best and has even been given the unofficial-official stamp of approval from people who have to work with and worry about the taste of milk every day: Baristas. Baristas everywhere are so enamored with Oatly that they even made an Oatly Barista edition, so you know its the good stuff.

A common refrain youll hear from people asked about veganism is, I could never give up cheese! With Miyokos, you dont have to, and you honestly wont miss the real deal. There are many excellent plant-based creameries coming to market, but Miyokos rises about the competition with the impeccable flavor and mouthfeel of its imitation-dairy cheeses. The brand also has one of the most diverse product lines around, with the highlight being its line of artisan, European-inspired cheese wheels. Aesthetically pleasing for cheese plates and charcuterie boards alike, the line features classics like herbs de Provence, chive-encrusted, and aged, with the exact smell, taste, and appearance youd expect from each. Miyokos also makes vegan mozzarella, cream cheese, and butter, and has new, upcoming products like cheddar and pepper jack. So fear not, cheese-lovers; Miyokos will make a convert out of you.

Who didnt love chicken nuggets as a child and who doesnt still enjoy the occasional nugg-indulgence now? But its widely known that fast food and mass-produced chicken nuggets are just plain bad for you, and the poor chickens whose meat is used for chicken nuggets are often treated horribly. So how can you get your nugget fix without supporting such an awful industry? Now theres Nuggs. These non-chicken nuggets are made using a pea-protein base, along with different ingredients and seasonings to create that perfect crispy coating and tender, chewy interior we all know and love. They certainly look as mouthwatering as any fast-food chain nugget, and the internet raves about the flavor and texture. So dont be chicken, as the brands slogan says: If youre a nugget lover, get on the Nuggs train.

Dedicated to elevating the simple frozen dinner to something thats actually good for you and delicious, Amys Kitchen was one of the trailblazers of the organic food movement and began making food for the vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan crowds long before it was a thing. So the company really knows its stuff, especially in the frozen pizza department. So youre looking for vegan frozen zas to throw in the freezer, give one of its ten kinds of vegan pizzas a try. There are classics like plain cheese, margarita, and pepperoni, as well as more inventive ones that are loaded with veggies and vegan meats. And Amys also has tons of other products as well, like burritos, bowls, pastas, and more.

Just because youre now a vegan (or trying to eat less meat) doesnt mean that your breakfast plate has to be bacon-less. Making a worthy vegan-bacon that is comparable to the real thing is a lofty goal, but Lightlife, a plant-based meat company, has the formula down. Its Smart Bacon is fantastically crunchy and the bacon flavor is pretty much spot-on. Plus, as its plant-based, its so much better for you, with no nitrates and no cholesterol. Nothing will ever top real bacon, but we all gotta make sacrifices for a healthier us, a healthier planet, and healthier, happier pigs, so you can feel good about bringing home THIS bacon.

Tofu is a staple of any vegan or vegetarian diet; it doesnt contain any animal products and its incredibly versatile, suitable for cooking in a lot of different dishes, so its a fantastic meat substitute. Trader Joes has tons of awesome vegan options (some intentionally vegan, others happy accidents), and its tofu selection is the tops. In addition to plain, the brand also has reheatable meals featuring tofu as the protein, and their Sriracha-flavored Tofu is a real kick in the pants, full of flavor and very filling. The flavor and texture of all its tofus are excellent, so its a great introduction to the world of tofu if youre just diving in.

The Grateful Dead have released a line of vegan deodorant – CNN

Posted: at 4:48 am

In collaboration with North Coast Organics, the Grateful Dead have launched a line of deodorant, yes deodorant. It might seem off-brand, but for the rock legends who were long labeled as hippies, a vegan line of deodorant is kind of fitting.

With the band's iconic thunderbolt on the packaging, the deodorant comes in five different scents: Skull & Roses (lavender, rose), Sunshine (blood orange, bergamot), Workingman's (cedarwood, juniper), Timber (Douglas fir, sage) and Unscented.

All are handmade in small batches, using 100% natural, vegan, edible ingredients, according to a news release.

"I have been a Dead Head since 1999," North Coast Organics CEO Nathan Morin said in a statement. "The music and spirit of the Grateful Dead have influenced my company's core principles of service, veganism, and organic agriculture."

"The Grateful Dead have inspired us to stay true to our main mission of social responsibility. We took care in creating special oil blends that reference the Grateful Dead's music," Morin said.

The band's legacy manager and archivist David Lemiuex said the line of deodorant aligns with the Deadheads' "love of the world around us."

"North Coast Organics lives and functions as we do, with an awareness that the future's here, we are it, and we need to take care of the planet and ourselves," Lemiuex said.

Following their online success, Beyonc signed Chloe and Halle to her Parkwood Entertainment label, a deal that includes mentorship tolead the sisters in the right direction and help grow their success.

The Bailey sisters, who were born and raised in Atlanta, are also making a name for themselves in Hollywood. In addition to singing, they play twins' Jazz and Skye Forester on the sitcom Grown-ish.Halle is also set to play Ariel in The Little Mermaid remake, which is slated to begin production this year. Chloex Halle just released their highly acclaimed album The Ungodly Hour, which features the hit singleDo It. In additionto theiracting and singingcareers, the sisters are alsovocal advocates of a vegan diet, whichthey claim hashelped their singing abilities.

Before theywent fully vegan, Chloe and Halle ditched meat and dairy for a week with their mom to see if they could last andif they would enjoy it. With no intention to adopt the diet as a large part of their lifestyle, the sistersended up lovinghow plant-based food made them feel anddecided to continue to eat vegan. They credit their diet forkeeping their "voices in shape" and explained how eliminating dairy helps to limit extra mucus build-up,according to a PETA interview.

At first, Chloe and Halle found that a vegan diet was super easy to achieve inAtlanta, and explain how the diet ismore convenientnow that they moved to Los Angeles."Eggs and dairy never sat well with meso it was easy, Chloe toldComplex. When we moved to L.A., it really became easy. So many vegan restaurants and vegan aisles in the grocery store are like heaven for us!"

We are finding out more information about the diet since the sisters are quarantining together. They recently took the BuzzFeedSister Test,a video series where they were asked questions about each other, and whoever guessed correctly received a point, which sounds like an easy challenge for such close-knit siblings.

One of the first questions asked about their favorite pizza toppings: Halle guessed correctly for Chloe when she said she loves mushroom, spinach, basil, artichokes, tomato sauce, and emphasized she does not like cheese on her pizza. Speaking for herself, Halle notes that she likes a similar pizza but isn't a fan ofadding spinach for a topping. Try this similar "cheese-less" pizza recipe from The Beet.

The next question was, what's their favorite meal? Halle answers for Chloe and says "you have certain foods that you just love, like jasmine white rice, bread, apples, grapes, and watermelon." Chloe had a difficult time answering the question for Halle but finally thought of the correct answer which is avocado toast, rice, and bread. Chloeadds, she "hates avocados." Try this avocado toast recipe from The Beet.

Another questionin the Sister Test asked about favorite desserts: Chloe aced this question for Halle saying that she loves vegan cheesecake from Something Vegan, the 'chicken' & waffles and pancakes from Crossroads Kitchen, donuts from Sage, and their homemade vegan gluten-free sugar cookies. Chloe doesn't have much of a sweet tooth but agrees that she likes their homemade vegan gluten-free sugar cookies. Try this strawberry vegan cheesecake recipe from The Beet.

Recently, the sisters filmed an Instagram live on a tour bus heading to their pre-soundcheckfor the upcoming tour andspoke a little more about their vegan diets. Chloe explained how excited she was to eat when they got to the stadium, "because catering is so good on tour, and good for us vegans."Chloe explains how she will probably gain weight because she keeps eating during quarantine andHalledisagreesand she says, "Chloe has been working out a lot during the quarantine."

The sisters show us how to make one of their favorite smoothie recipes on MTV Live and call it the "quarantine smoothie." They introduce the ingredients one by one, which you can find below to try it yourself and blended them together in a Nutribullet. The sisters cheers the healthy smoothies in champagne glasses at the end of the video andends the video by saying, "We love y'all."

Vegan Cheese Industry Projected to Increase by Nearly 300 Percent by 2030 – VegNews

Posted: at 4:47 am

The global vegan cheese market is expected to reach approximately $7 billion by 2030, according to a new report compiled by data analytics firm Transparency Market Research (TMR). By the end of 2020, the vegan cheese market is expected to reach approximately $2.5 billion with TMR predicting that it will grow by a compounded annual growth rate of approximately 10 percent in the next decade. When it comes to product type, vegan mozzarella holds the largest market share at 34 percent and almond-based cheeses lead in terms of protein source at 37 percent market share. Consumers are increasingly embracing new food trends and preferences that have stayed in the niche category for a considerable amount of time, the report states. However, climate change, mounting concerns related to animal cruelty, and health are some of the leading factors that are driving the vegan movement worldwide.

According to TMR, Europe leads the global vegan cheese market followed by North America, with Europe predicted to hold approximately 40 percent market share by 2030. In the United States, the vegan food industry is currently worth $5 billion according to data jointly released in March by trade group Plant Based Food Association (PBFA) and advocacy group The Good Food Institute (GFI) with sales of vegan cheese growing 18 percentas compared to only one percent for dairy-based cheeseduring the 52-week period ending in December 2019. During peak-pandemic shopping in mid-March 2020, vegan cheese sales increased by 95 percent when compared to sales during the same time last year and continued to grow by 54 percent in the four weeks thereafter, according to a separate PBFA report.

14 Vegan-Friendly Ethiopian Restaurants in the US We’re Obsessed With – VegNews

Posted: at 4:47 am

without comments

Unlike the vast majority of international cuisines represented in the US, Ethiopian cuisine has predominantly remained under Ethiopian ownership. These incredible eateries are often family-owned and operated, gaining a loyal patronage of locals with never-ending injera and comforting vegetable and lentil stews. Here are just 14 of the many vegan-friendly Ethiopian restaurants across the US. Show your support of independent and Black-owned businesses and fill your belly with the nourishing food from your local spot.

1. Abyssinia, Anaheim, CATucked away in the corner of a strip mall off a busy Orange County intersection, this spot attracts crowds for celebrations as well as intimate date nights. While there are multiple vegan options to choose from (everything labeled vegetarian is also vegan), the Vegetarian Special offers the most variety and bang for your buck. The highlight of this combination is the shiroa silky smooth spiced blend of powdered chickpeas. You wont find it at every Ethiopian restaurant, which makes Abyssinia stand out from the crowd.

2. Tadu Ethiopian Kitchen, San Francisco, CADespite having two locations, this amazing eatery often falls under the radar of vegan locals and tourists alike. If we lived in the city, wed easily order takeout from Tadu at least once a week. Popular vegan-friendly items include the firfir (sliced injera mixed with berbere spices and vegetables), eggplant tibs, and the all-encompassing Vegetarian Combo.

3. Fedeel Bistro, Atlanta, GANamed by Atlanta Magazine as one of the best vegan meals around, this one-year-old Ethiopian restaurant hedges out its neighboring competition after becoming the third Ethiopian spot on a single intersection in 2019. Its a bit fancier and the options (both meat and vegan) are slightly more limited in comparison to its neighbors, but the quality is unmatched. The Vegan Sampler is the obvious choice, but theres one item here you wont find elsewhereYeshembra Asachickpea biscuits smothered in a spicy sauce. Youll want a full order the second time you visit.

4. Tana Ethiopian Restaurant, Anaheim, CAInjera is always plentiful at an Ethiopian restaurant, but at Tana, one to-go order comes with enough injera for two. Were not complaining. Pro tip: the best way to save leftover injera is to freeze it. To thaw, the Tana owners advise to pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds or until warm.

5. Awash Ethiopian Restaurant, San Diego, CACalifornias southernmost county has its fair share of Ethiopian restaurants, but the vegans rave about the options at Awash. The Vegetarian Combination includes all the vegetable hits in addition to injera (which is also available gluten-free). The lentils, yellow split peas, shiro, collard greens, cabbage, and carrot dishes displayed on open-faced injera will make you crave Ethiopian like you never have before.

6. Awash Ethiopian Restaurant, Miami, FLThis isnt a chain, its merely a coincidence. The name Awash refers to a significant river in Ethiopia, and it just so happens these two restaurant owners think alike both in naming their business and leaning into plant-based offerings. Order the Awash Vegetarian Combination to sample it all, and if you find that you favor a specific dish, you can ask for a side of that option instead of ordering a full entre of it.

7. Azla Vegan, Los Angeles, CAWhen a vegan restaurant appears on The Food Network hit show, Guys Grocery Games, it deserves to be on every foodies must-visit bucket list. The Abegaze family is at the helm of the operation. As of June 2020, the restaurant is limited to family meal-style takeout, so get your orders in! Pick-ups are on Fridays and Saturdays from Noon-2pm.

8. Bunna Cafe, Brooklyn, NYResidents of all five boroughs flock to this vegan Ethiopian spot in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. The menu is extensive and offers both a la carte and combination platters for one, two, three, and seven people. Those unfamiliar with the cuisine can rest easy, as each menu item is accompanied by a picture and a detailed description. Every dish is delightful, but the kesir selata (chilled beets, carrots, and potatoes) and enguday tibs (cremini mushrooms sauteed with spices) are a must.

9. Rahel Ethiopian Vegan Cuisine, Los Angeles, CARight at home in the Los Angeles neighborhood known as Little Ethiopia, Rahels distinguishes itself as completely vegan. The menu does not lack for variety, though. Spare yourself the major indecision and sample it all with the Special Combination Dishes.
