Once associated with extreme fussy eaters and devoted animal rights activists, veganism is now becoming cool thanks to a number of celebrities embracing the diet.
Jennifer Lopez credits veganism with helping her stay svelte and looking decades younger than her 45-years.
Health guru Gwyneth Paltrow is of course another advocate of the plant-based diet and shared her passion for it in her book It's All Good.

Vegan mayonnaise maker sued by food giant Unilever
Posted: at 2:47 pm
Big Tobacco, Big Oil, now Big Mayo?
Thats what Josh Tetrick, founder and chief executive of Hampton Creek in San Francisco, feels like hes facing in a lawsuit filed against his vegan start-up by multinational food giant Unilever.
------------ FOR THE RECORD Nov. 10, 1:15 p.m.: An earlier version of this post misspelled Hampton Creek CEO Josh Tetrick's last name as Petrick. ------------
The $67.4-billion company says Tetricks firm is engaging in false advertising by describing its Just Mayo sandwich spread as mayonnaise, even though it contains no eggs.
Big Mayo strikes, said Tetrick, who believes his company is absolved of false advertising claims because his spread uses the colloquialism mayo and not mayonnaise. U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines for mayonnaise contain egg yolk.
Tetrick said Hampton Creek plans to file a countersuit in the coming weeks that would likely focus on Unilevers sustainability practices.
Unilever is seeking compensation for lost profits and damages and demanding that Hampton Creek refrain from declaring Just Mayo superior in taste to Unilevers Best Foods and Hellmans brands of mayonnaise.
"We brought this lawsuit because use of the Just Mayo name blatantly misleads consumers," a Unilever spokesperson said in an e-mailed statement. "In fact, the product is Just NOT Mayo as it does not contain one of mayonnaises key ingredients -- eggs -- in violation of the federal regulations that are in place to protect consumers."
The British-Dutch company filed its lawsuit Oct. 31 in federal court in Newark, N.J.
Just Mayo burst onto the health food scene last year with high-profile financial backing from Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Li Ka-shing, Asias richest tycoon.

New study discovers vegan diet helps in weight loss
Posted: at 2:47 pm
A new study has found that people who follow a vegan diet are likelier to shed weight faster than those who consume a diet containing meat and dairy.
The study, conducted by the University of South Carolina (US), compared the amount of weight lost by those on vegan diets to those on a mostly plant-based diet, and those eating an omnivorous diet with a mix of animal products and plant based foods. At the end of six months, individuals on the vegan diet lost more weight than the other two groups by an average of 4.3%.
The study followed participants who were randomly assigned to one of five diets on the dietary spectrum: vegan which excludes all animal products, semi-vegetarian with occasional meat intake; pesco-vegetarian which excludes all meat except seafood; vegetarian which excludes all meat and seafood but includes animal products, and omnivorous, which excludes no foods.
Participants followed their assigned dietary restrictions for six months, with all groups except the omnivorous participating in weekly group meetings. Those who stuck to the vegan diet showed the greatest weight loss at the two and six month marks.
Lead author on this study, Gabrielle Turner-McGrievy noted that the diet consumed by vegan participants was high in carbohydrates that rate low on the glycemic index, and said that the study might help alleviate the fears of people who enjoy pasta, rice, and other grains but want to lose weight. The study also showed the greatest amount of decrease in the fat of vegan participants, and saturated fat levels at the two and six month checks, had lower BMIs, and improved macro nutrients more than other diets.
The study is published in International Journal of Applied and Basic Nutritional Sciences.
