Vegan food is popular, but how easy is it to change your diet?

It might be a stretch to describe vegan eating as mainstream but the signs are that more people are willing to give it a go (why else would Beyonce launch a business delivering vegan meals?)

For one thing, the old vegan image of nut roasts and homespun fashion is dead. Eating plants, not animals, has a new glamour thanks in part to the numbers of famous names now reportedly eating meals without animal products - think Christine Lagarde, the elegant head of the International Monetary Fund, musicians Russell Brand and Usher, and actors like Joaquin Phoenix and Jessica Chastain.

And while paleo still rules in the world of cookbooks, the numbers of vegan and vegetarian titles published in Australia is rising. Last year The Oh She Glows Cookbook by Angela Liddon that made the New York Times bestseller list was released in Australia by Penguin Books, which are publishing a second vegan title Peace and Parsnips by Lee Watson in May. So far this year Murdoch Books has released the Easy Vegan by Sue Quinn andEat Clean Green and Vegetarian by Lee Holmes.

Meanwhile, Kym Staton who founded the Sydney Vegan Clubtwo years ago to support both vegans and those who are trying to be, reports that around 200 new members are joining each month, double the rate of a year ago.

But eschewing all animal foods dairy and eggs included isn't always easy, especially if you try converting overnight.

"In my experience it's the people who go vegan in a more gradual manner who usually have better vegan diets," says Lucy Taylor, a Melbourne accredited practising dietitian and vegan. "They might stop having dairy milk and switch to soy milk instead and they'll have beans, lentils or tofu instead of meat. Some people who try going vegan overnight don't always do their research and end up just omitting meat and dairy from their diet for instance, they might just have vegetables and pasta for dinner but without a good source of protein such as legumes.

"The solution is to read vegan food blogs and recipe books - there's a whole world of new foods that opens up that you can experiment with - wholegrain like quinoa, amaranth, barley, cous cous and freekeh, legumes like chickpeas, black beans and lentils, nuts and seeds as well as plant milks like oat, almond, soy and rice. "

While it's easy enough to get sufficient protein on a vegan diet from legumes and nuts, for example, the nutrient that's hard to get from plant foods is vitamin B12.

Vegans balance health, awareness | Arts & Culture

When a vegan walks into the Presidential Court Building Cafe, they only have a few options.

They can head for the salad bar to pile their plate with fruits and vegetables, or they can walk through the cafeteria, checking the labels on vegetarian dishes to see if any animal products are listed in the ingredients.

Someone who follows a vegan diet doesnt eat meat. No pork, no beef, no poultry, no fish, nothing. Additionally, they say no to eggs, milk, cheese and honey no animal by-products.

Aden Cunningham, undeclared sophomore, had been a vegetarian for three years when he moved into North Carrick in 2013-2014, his freshman year and had a meal plan which regularly disappointed him.

I pretty much ate terrible salads and really bad pizza because thats all that they had, Cunningham said. They claimed to have a vegetarian section, but it was rice and really awful tasting beans and occasionally tofu that wasnt cooked well.

During winter break of his freshman year, his girlfriend, Kara Williamson, a sophomore in interior design, decided to become a vegan.

Ive always considered myself an animal lover, but I never really paid attention to the fact that I was eating animals, Williamson said. Then one day it just kind of clicked in my head for some reason. I dont know what exactly did it. I just decided that I needed to change.

She, like many others, was initially a vegetarian.

I learned how bad the dairy and chicken industry was and that youre still paying for the deaths of animals if you buy those products, Williamson said.

Cunningham wanted to follow suit but delayed his decision because of his options in the cafeterias.

‘Health workers abused my vegan daughter’s human rights by trying to feed her cheese and tuna’

Posted: at 2:53 pm

An angry father claims doctors at a rehabilitation unit abused his daughter's human rights by trying to feed her tuna and cheese.

Laurence Main claims his daughter Chantal, 32, who has a history of mental illness, entered the Tan y Castell unit in Ruthin voluntarily last week.

Mr Main, from Machynlleth, said she went to the centre to learn life skills but has been prevented from leaving, reports the Daily Post.

Health chiefs are investigating after Mr Main said while in the unit she has been offered fish and dairy products by staff, despite making it clear she was a vegan who avoids animal products on moral grounds.

He said: She said theyd given her cheese and tuna, that was their idea of a vegan diet.

"That doesnt fill you with confidence.

It has now improved and she has been given vegan sausages and chips but for the first few days it was just baked beans. They had no idea.

Mr Main said when he recently visited Chantal, she told him: I want her to come home, I want to come home.

He said when he asked if she could leave clinical staff told him she could not.

Mr Main said: I was told if I take her home that they would call the police. My daughter was in tears when I left.

SUSI: The Key To Sustainable Living, Now Open in Burgos Circle

Posted: at 2:53 pm

SUSI:The Key To Sustainable Living is a new restaurant that boasts of 'green gastronomy,' featuring a menu that is plant-based and 100% vegan--that's a food lineup that is meat-free, dairy-free, egg-free, and gluten-free.

Photo from SUSI Facebook

SUSI is also a delicatessen and boulangerie, and as early as April 2014, has been posting kitchen experiments of many plant-based dishes and desserts. The vegan establishment finally opened its doors to the public last weekend, on Valentine's Day, with a special degustation menu, featuring several of their gluten-free vegan dishes.

There's not much information yet about what else is in store for their menu, other than the many mouthwatering photos of their vegan breads and desserts, like potato rye buns, gluten free dark chocolate muffins, dark chocolate pear tart, gluten free cacao buckwheat pancakes, and nut-based 'cheesecakes' that come in different toppings. For savory and more filling fare, they have pasta like "Mac & Geez", vegetable wraps, risotto, even curry. We have many vegetarian options in the metro, but an establishment purely vegan and plant-based is even more hard to find, and hopefully SUSI becomes one of many healthier, sustainable options for the foodie folk that are slowly becoming more conscious of what goes on their plate.
