In starting the transition to a vegan diet, there are a few different strategies.

Some people shift into a vegan diet slowly, starting with vegan analogues plant-based foods whose taste resembles animal products. Some peoplesimply take out the animal products from their diet and replace them with plant foods with which they are already familiar with. While others concentrate on experimenting with entirely new vegan foods, often from international cuisines. Thankfully, there is no shortage of vegan foods to help make the transition. In fact, most of the food we eat is vegan, without us knowing it![/rescue_column]

An even better option is to grow your own food! If you have a porch that can hold large plant containers or a front or back yard with just a little space, start a garden of your own. Growing your own food is a healthy and cheaper way to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Go to your nearest library or bookstore and find out what grows best in your neck of the woods and get planting!

With a little time and practice, you will develop a new routine for planning meals and cooking. We recommend getting a good cookbook and experimenting, as well as checking out the amazing recipes from the Post Punk Kitchen and Healthy Happy Life. You could also visit our Recipe Archive and try out some vegan recipes.

In the meantime, here are some simple and healthy meal ideas to start with

Most grocery stores carry a great variety of vegan products and many have a Natural or Health Food section. Soy, rice, coconut, hemp, almond and oat milks are also available at many grocery stores, and work in most recipes calling for cows milk. Each has a different flavor, experiment to see which best suits you.

Soy margarines (that do not contain the dairy product whey) and soy yogurts are also available at most stores. The single analogue that has had the most trouble pleasing vegans is soy cheese. Several brands are available, but dont expect it to taste exactly like your favorite cheese. Daiya is a new and popular vegan cheese that is known for its cheese-like consistency and melting properties. There are several awesome cream cheese substitutes and no vegan refrigerator is complete without the mayonnaise substituteVeganaise.You also may want to try out some of the recipes from The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook.There are several brands of soy, rice, and coconut frozen desserts, while most supermarkets carry at least one brand.

The most important thing is to keep trying different things try not to let one type of yogurt you dislike keep you from trying the others. Many meat and dairy alternatives taste so different from each other.

Here is why vegan diets and lifestyles have enormous appeal

The word vegan refers to anything thats free of animal products: no meat, milk, eggs, wool,leather, and so forth. Your sandwich, your shampoo, andyour car seats are examples of itemsthat couldbe vegan.

Veganism carries at least three potential advantages:

Can you become a vegan through diet alone? Absolutely, since, as we will see in the next section, vegan was originally defined purely in dietary terms.

A handful of vegans(usually abrasively) insistthat veganism is a lifestyle, not a diet. In other words, you dont get to join theveganclub until you go beyond food to purge your life of leather, wool, and animal-derived cosmetics. Oftentimes, these vegans are doing the animals a grave disservice by definingthe vegan concept in the most rigid andexclusionaryway possible. These are people would love torevoke your vegan card if they find out you havent yet taken your 10-year-old leather snow-boots to the thrift store.

The entire question of who gets to call themselves a vegan is annoying and not worth much attention. Rather than think ofveganism as an identity, its wisest to use it as a concept that can inspire you to remove animal products from your life, wherever you can easily do it. And its almost always easy.Oftentimes, you wont know whether a given food or cosmetics ingredient comes from animals, so you can use our animal ingredientslist to familiarize yourself with substances that are animal-derived.

No matter how far you would ultimately like to take the vegan concept, it makes sense tobeginyour transition by emphasizing dietary choices. After all, unless you buy a new fur coat every winter, the overwhelming majority ofany animal useassociated with your lifehas to do with yourfood choices.

Donald Watson coined the termvegan in 1944 in Great Britain. Heres Watson from that year, in the first issue of The Vegan News, proposing that his readers either embrace the word, or come up with a better one, as the basis for a new social movement:

We should all consider carefully what our Group, and our magazine, and ourselves, shall be called. Non-dairy has become established as a generally understood colloquialism, but like non-lacto it is too negative. Moreover it does not imply that we are opposed to the use of eggs as food. We need a name that suggests what we do eat, and if possible one that conveys the idea that even with all animal foods taboo, Nature still offers us a bewildering assortment from which to choose. Vegetarian and Fruitarian are already associated with societies that allow the fruits (!) of cows and fowls, therefore it seems we must make a new and appropriate word. As this first issue of our periodical had to be named, I have used the title The Vegan News. Should we adopt this, our diet will soon become known as a VEGAN diet, and we should aspire to the rank of VEGANS. Members suggestions will be welcomed. The virtue of having a short title is best known to those of us who, as secretaries of vegetarian societies have to type or write the word vegetarian thousands of times a year!

IVA-Boston The International Vegan Association

IVA-Boston conducts ongoing abolitionist vegan education for its volunteers and the public.The chapter was founded by an area volunteer who started the Boston Vegan Association in 2007. With the launch of the IVA, the BVA ceased activities so that its volunteers could join IVA-Boston and continue on with their abolitionist advocacy in and around Boston as part of theIVA. Like any IVA chapter, IVA-Boston maintains a grassroots approach to advocacy while functioning as a part of the the IVA, and is therefore fully alignedwith the IVAs mission. We avoid activities inconsistent with or which do not fulfill the IVAsmission. For that reason, IVA-Boston does not participate in campaigns focused on a single issue (e.g., fur), promote vegetarianism, lobby government officials, or otherwise attempt to reform welfare laws, which take it as a given that it is permissible to use animals as our property.

To develop ourselves as activists, we meet monthly for Advocacy Practice meetings and we periodically conduct or participate in the IVAs animal rights reading groups. The reading groups improvenot only our own knowledge of animal rightsand the abolitionist approach, but also serve as introductory animal rights education to newcomers and the public alike. Newcomers may also learn more about the IVA and veganism through our orientation meetings.

In addition to our animal rights reading groups, which are open to the public, we distribute our ownliteraturein busy pedestrian zones and at a popular area events, where we consistently engage members of the public in abolitionist conversations. Our volunteers have disseminated an abolitionist message via MBTA ads (see left), brought Prof. Gary L. Francione to the Old South Meeting House for a discussion on abolitionist animal rights, andoffered our literature free to abolitionist groups around the world (a campaign that has now been taken up by the IVA).

Our animal rights reading groups last several meetings over 2-3 months, and run at least twice per year. Newcomer orientations and advocacy practice meetings occur on the first Sunday afternoon of each month, though we often push back a week if a major holiday causes a scheduling conflict. To stay informed about all meeting times, dates, locations, and topics,sign up for our monthly newsletter(below), which is generally sent about a week before our meetings.
