The first-ever caricature festival will be held in HCM City to bring the art closer to the public and provide a comic playground for professional caricaturists and the audience.
This was stated by the organiser of the festival, The Thao & Van Hoa (Sports & Culture) newspaper.
The events in the festival, to be held this Sunday, include an exhibition of this year's Rong Tre (Bamboo Dragon) Journalism Caricature contest featuring 140 finalist entries, a live portrait caricature contest for the audience by noted caricaturists, a workshop on Viet Nam's caricature and a graffiti art performance by a group led by artist Le Hao. The award ceremony for this year's Bamboo Dragon contest will also be held at the festival.
The event will be organised between 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Applied Contemporary Arts Centre, 3A Ton Duc Thang Street, District 1.
The fourth biennial caricature contest saw 420 entries by artists from across the country under a free theme with the purpose of "exchanging smiles".
The entries can be painted by both Vietnamese and foreigners living in the country and have been published or are designed to be published in various printed and online newspapers and magazines throughout the country between January 31, 2012 and February 14, 2014.

300 objects spotted bad weather stops jet search

Thailand News.Net Thursday 27th March, 2014
Anond Snidvongs, executive director of Thailand's Geo Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, said the Thaichote satellite or Thailand Earth Observation Satellite, recorded the objects in the Indian Ocean at 10 a.m March 24, a day after images from a French satellite detected 122 floating objects, Bangkok daily The Nation reported Thursday.
He also said that the site where the 300 objects were detected was about 2,700 km from Perth, Australia, and about 200 km from the international search area where the ill-fated flight is thought to have come down.
The objects ranged from two to 15 metres in size, he added.
Anond said the images have been handed to Thai caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatara and caretaker Foreign Minister Surapong Tohvichakchaikul would forward the findings to the Malaysian authorities for further investigation if these objects belong to flight MH370.
Thaichote is a remote sensing satellite for natural resources' observation.
Meanwhile, search operations for the lost jet in the southern Indian Ocean were suspended Thursday due to bad weather.
"Today's (Thursday's) search operations have been suspended due to bad weather. All planes are returning to Perth amp; ships are leaving the search area," the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) tweeted.
However, it later added: "Ships staying in search area amp; will attempt to continue searching but all planes returning. Bad weather expected for next 24 hours."
Earlier Thursday, the AMSA, which is coordinating the ongoing multinational search operation, said in an update that the search and recovery operations for flight MH370 resumed with six military aircraft, five civil aircraft and five ships in the Australian Search and Rescue Region.

Southeast Asia stocks: Thai shares rise, RM62mill flows into M'sia, S'pore at 2-month high
Posted: at 5:52 am
BANGKOK Thai shares rose for a second day, led by large-cap and dividend-yielding stocks, while shares in Singapore hit their highest in more than two months as upbeat U.S. data and hopes about China's economic stimulus boosted sentiments. Gains in shares of Advanced Info Service PCL, the third-biggest company by market value, and active buying in utility firm Glow Energy PCL helped lift the broader Thai market. The SET index closed up 0.5 percent at 1,360.44. Domestic institutions were major buyers of Thai shares on Wednesday. Brokers expect limited gains near term thanks to rising political risk. Anti-government protesters marched in Bangkok on Tuesday to drum up support for a rally at the weekend, just before Thailand holds elections for the Senate, which will play a central role in their aim of removing Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Data released on Wednesday showed Thai exports rose more than expected in February but imports plunged again, which might show how the country's long political crisis is hitting domestic demand. Singaporer's benchmark Straits Times index was up 1.3 percent at 3,143.32, the highest close since Jan. 10, as MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 1.2 percent. Foreign investors bought shares in the region, according to stock exchange and Thomson Reuters data. The Philippines posted a net inflows of 417.5 million peso ($9.26 million), Malaysia's 62.79 million ringgit ($19 million) and Indonesia's 107.7 billion rupiah ($9.46 million). Vietnam bucked the trend, falling 2.3 percent as individual investors sold stocks to reduce margin trading. Southeast Asia stocks: Indonesia leads regional loss on Fed rate hike concerns
Posted: March 21, 2014 at 12:51 am
BANGKOK: Indonesian shares posted their biggest loss in almost two months on Thursday as investors sold off large-caps while Thai shares fell for a third day as concerns about a sooner-than-expected rise in U.S. interest rates triggered selling across the region. Jakarta's Composite Index ended down 2.5 percent, its worst one-day fall since Jan. 27. The Top 45 large-cap stocks fell 3.3 percent, with the biggest losers including Bank Danamon and developer Summarecon Agung .
Optimism over Indonesia's election this year has bolstered sentiment in the share market. The sell-offs trimmed its year-to-date gain in U.S. dollar terms to 18.2 percent, but still retained its position as Asia's second best performer so far this year.
The Thai SET index fell 0.2 percent to its lowest close in more than one week, led by a 5 percent drop in shares of Charoen Pokphand Foods, partly due to profit-taking.
Foreign investors were net sellers of Thai shares for the first time in three sessions. The lifting of the emergency decree in Bangkok has attracted foreign buying over the past two sessions.
Malaysia closed nearly unchanged, reporting a net foreign selling of 143.5 million ringgit ($43.78 million) SOUTHEAST ASIAN STOCK MARKETS Change on day Market Current Prev Close Pct Move TR SE Asia Index* 399.33 405.92 -1.62 Singapore 3057.20 3080.75 -0.76 Kuala Lumpur 1818.17 1817.44 +0.04 Bangkok 1361.47 1364.27 -0.21 Jakarta 4698.98 4821.46 -2.54 Manila 6417.35 6462.49 -0.70 Ho Chi Minh 600.26 605.59 -0.88 Change on year Market Current End 2013 Pct Move TR SE Asia Index* 399.33 388.37 +2.82 Singapore 3057.20 3167.43 -3.48 Kuala Lumpur 1818.17 1866.96 -2.61 Bangkok 1361.47 1298.71 +4.83 Jakarta 4698.98 4274.18 +9.94 Manila 6417.35 5889.83 +8.96 Ho Chi Minh 600.26 504.63 +18.95 * The Thomson Reuters South East Asia Index is a highly representative indicator of stocks listed in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Inaction just isn't a part of Barry Brown's vocabulary.
Inaction just isn't a part of Barry Brown's vocabulary.
At 80 years old, while many people of his vintage play cards and venture out on social outings, Mr Brown clocks on at 6am each morning, ready for his working day.
Despite being officially retired Mr Brown still plays an active role at Wollongong Drum Master, the oil drum recycling business he established 20 years ago.
"I'm just not the sort of person who can sit at home," he said.
"My son Peter runs the business so I just go out to give him support ... I get the place opened and I get it ready for when the guys get to work."
On any given day, the IRT Links Seaside resident can be found advising staff, supervising the steam boiler or performing odd jobs around the Woonona site.
The work is the perfect way to satisfy his "itchy feet" and avoid boredom.
"I don't consider that I'm fit but, by gee, I'm healthy and most certainly it keeps the old brain box as good as ever - and that, I consider, is the most important thing," he said.
